On Easter Sunday we will celebrate the greatest event in the history of the world, an event that forever changed the world and humanity’s relationship with God. That event is the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ to life. It is the event that brings hope to a world in despair. The death and resurrection of Jesus brings hope to the world because it promises the opportunity of a “do over.” Rather than condemn people for the sin of their pasts, the death and resurrection of Jesus “puts to death” the things of the past and gives one resurrection to a new life and new beginning. In Christ Jesus, we have the hope of a new, fresh start, a “do over,” if you will in life. What great hope this can give to people who are broken and hurting. Their brokenness can be healed by Jesus. The hurt and pain of the past is buried in the past and banished from the present with God. However, many do not take hold of this hope we have in Jesus. Many people may be aware of the hope we have in Christ yet fail to live into the freedom it offers. Sometimes the most unforgiving attitude toward one’s self is from within. It is often more difficult to forgive ourselves of past transgressions than it is to forgive another. Let us help those with an unforgiving spirit toward themselves to understand that failing to forgive him/herself is a barrier to experiencing new life in Jesus Christ. Likewise, failure to forgive others becomes a barrier to experiencing new life in Jesus. Let’s be honest here. Most people could care less whether or not someone they “wronged” is willing to forgive them. They really don’t care. So in failing to forgive another who is really suffering? It is the person who fails to forgive. Having an unforgiving spirit is really a self-made trap that keeps one from enjoying freedom in Christ. Jesus’ death and resurrection buries the past and gives those in Christ a “do over.” His resurrection gives the opportunity of a fresh start in life. Too many people are trapped in guilt and self-condemnation over the past. In this Easter season let us remind the world that in Jesus Christ there is a new beginning. I’m reminded of the words of the hymn, “This Is a Day of New Beginnings,” This is a day of new beginnings, time to remember and move on, time to believe what love is bringing, laying to rest the pain that’s gone. For by the death of Jesus, God’s mighty Spirit, now as then, can make for us a world of difference, as faith and hope are born again. Then let us, with the Spirit’s daring, step from the past and leave behind our disappointment, guilt, and grieving, seeking new path, and sure to find. Christ is alive and goes before us to show and share what love can do. This is a day of new beginnings, our God is making all things new. (Brian Wren) Blessings and Peace in Christ Jesus, Pastor Barry

THOUGHTS FROM BRANDT Well, here we are preparing to celebrate the crucifixion, burial and resurrection of Jesus. I think sometimes we fail to realize that we should celebrate the crucifixion and burial as well as the resurrection. After all, one without the others is meaningless. The crucifixion without the resurrection leaves us no place to go, eternity is death. The resurrection without the crucifixion leaves us separated from God for eternity by the sin in our lives. We celebrate the entirety of the season, or at least we should. As I was thinking about all the events leading up to April 16, it occurred to me that many times I think of Easter Sunday as a climax. Typically, we don’t look beyond the climax of an event searching for meaning. But, Easter is a beginning. In John 15, Jesus told the disciples he would send the Advocate, the Holy Spirit. However, it would not happen until after the crucifixion, resurrection and ascension. The events of Easter made possible the birth of the church and its mission to carry out the Great Commission. As we celebrate this Easter Season and remember all that Jesus did for us, may we continue to look forward, opening our hearts and minds to the power of the Holy Spirit. May we continue to look forward to what the Holy Spirit will do through us, as individuals and the church, to accomplish all Jesus commanded us. - Pastor Bob

MISSIONS AND OUTREACH “We are a ‘mission church.’

We believe in reaching out to those in need locally, nationally and globally.” GRUB AT THE GROVE

FREE COMMUNITY MEAL TUESDAY, APRIL 25, 5-6:30 PM

TAYLORSVILLE ACTIVITY CENTER Spring is in full force (we hope) and it’s a great time to get outdoors and move around a little bit. Why not set aside some time to join your friends and neighbors at Grub at the Grove? Many of our guests bring family members, friends, or just come by themselves to eat and socialize. There is always someone new entering our doors each month; sometimes families and sometimes an individual. Also, several people have shared their concerns in the prayer room. Please remember as we continue to provide these free monthly meals, your generous volunteer support and donations are making a difference. Many thanks to Jay and Betty Merrick for providing all of the Mardi Gras fun at the February meal. They really went “all out” to give us a full understanding of Mardi Gras and tuck in a few goodies at the same time. Everyone really enjoyed it! Our next free meal is on Tuesday, April 25. Come join us on for a really good meal, yummy dessert, and Christian fellowship! All are welcome. If you would like to participate in some way, please contact Carol Tatone 657-7831, [email protected], or sign up in the Taylorsville pew pads. Volunteers are always welcomed and appreciated.

LIFETREE CAFÉ Lifetree Café is one of our newest ministries at SGUMC and one you may be interested in knowing more about. As you may know, we meet in the conference room at the Huber Heights Y each Thursday from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. to listen to and share stories involving unique topics of concern. We opened on Feb. 2nd. Our first month in operation, after only four meetings, we have served a total of 45 people, 13 of whom responded that they grew closer to others and 22 of whom responded that they experienced God during their café conversation. If you have not yet had an opportunity to participate in this new ministry, we hope you will take advantage of it soon and come see what is going on that would draw people closer together with one another and with God in only an hour’s time on a Thursday evening. Maybe it’s the great coffee? Or the snacks? Or maybe it’s people….people just like you who come willing to listen to other’s stories, to discuss interesting topics, and to

learn about how God works in mysterious ways in everyone’s lives, including our own. We hope you will stop by next chance you get, pick up a flier on one of the church information tables, call Dan Held at 477-3729 for more information, or check us out on Facebook at Lifetree Café Huber Heights where you will find a video trailer of each topic one week in advance.

A NOTE OF THANKS & REPORT FROM THE “THE HOMEFULL MISSION TEAM”

For it is said “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty

and give you something to drink? When did we see you, a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for

one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ Matthew 25:37-40 On Saturday March 4th, 2017, SGUMC HomeFull Mission Team members prepared and served lunch to a little over 38 women guests and staff at the St. Vincent DePaul facility. Afterwards, Meghan Vincent, Al Matts, a volunteer from Wright Patterson, and the two owners of the S&S Meat House prepared and served lunch to just over 25 family members (mostly children). What was special in serving lunch to the families that Saturday was that the owners of the soon to be open meat house prepared brisket and pulled pork that was so delicious. They did tell us that they both plan to continue preparing and serving lunch to the families at St. Vincent DePaul on the first Saturday of the month. Before serving lunch to the ladies, we provided the family section manager with several large cases of size 5 and 6 diapers, and a large case of baby wipes. Later in the week, we provided St. Paul’s UMC with a couple of cases of canned vegetables, a small case of canned tuna and canned chicken, a case of Ramen, some women’s socks, a bag of dental hygiene items, women’s hygiene products, children’s coloring books and magazines. I want to thank the SGUMC congregation for all of the donated items placed in “The Samaritan Bin” for the homeless and those in need. These are just some of the desired donations: ♦ Money for Bus Passes/Tokens (Place your financial gift in the offering clearly marked “HomeFull Bus Passes”) ♦ Infant/Children clothing, size 6 Diapers, Training Pants, Toilet Paper, Cleaning Supplies & Laundry Detergent ♦ Men’s & Women’s Deodorant ♦ Feminine Hygiene and Oral Hygiene Products God has so richly blessed each of us in so many ways and wants us to be “Good Samaritans.” Please consider helping by serving or donating items for the homeless and for those in need. Please continue to keep those who are homeless and in need, especially the children, in your daily thoughts and prayers. For more detailed information regarding donations, please contact Allan Matts at 890-5457 and for more information regarding volunteering to help cooking and serving lunch, please contact Jane Elam at 233-4939. We are in desperate need of more volunteers to help serve.

BOOK OF THE MONTH CLUB The next Book of the Month will be “Punching Holes in the Dark,” by Robert Benson. This book by a retreat leader who speaks often on the life of prayer and contemplation, challenges us to believe that Jesus “not only came to reassure us of the gift of the kingdom that is yet unseen but to proclaim that the presence of the kingdom is already among us - even when we cannot see it and cannot hear it.” The author deals with the question of “How do we find it, not lose sight of it, and even share its message of hope with others in the darkness.” It is available at the Taylorsville office for $13.00, and is on display at both campuses. It will be discussed on Sunday, April 2nd, at 6:00 PM in room 101 of the Taylorsville campus. This could be a good book to read as a Lenten discipline and then follow up by joining the conversation on April 2 in an atmosphere of honest searching and patient listening. Contact Rev. Ken Clark with questions at 667-5409.

A CHURCH OF MANY COLORS - VOLUME II THE SEASONS OF LENT AND EASTER

The Season of Lent continues until Easter Sunday. The color for Lent is Purple which can symbolize pain, suffering and therefore solemnity, mourning, repentance. The purpose of Lent is the preparation of the believer through prayer, doing penance, repentance for sins, almsgiving, atonement and self denial. During Lent, many Christians commit to fasting or giving up certain luxuries as a form of penitence. Many Christians also add a Lenten spiritual discipline such as reading a daily devotional to draw themselves near to God. The exact dates of Lent depend on the date for Easter Sunday. Easter Sunday is the first Sunday after the first full moon after March 21st. Because the date for Easter moves between March 22nd and April 25th, the length of the “Season After Epiphany” and the “Season After Pentecost” varies. Easter Sunday this year is April 16th and the colors are white or gold which signify Majesty, Joy and Light. Easter celebrates the commemoration of the Resurrection of Christ. The Easter Season continues for fifty days until Pentecost which this year is June 4th.
