EXPLORING BULLYING BEHAVIORS THROUGH DRAMA (formerly Blue Apple’s BULLYING BEHAVIORS program)WORKSHOP/RESIDENCY: Grades 3-12 | $100/hr. per classroom*

Students examine both obvious and subtle bullying behaviors by employing a range of drama games, group discussion, and creative role play. Using acting skills to inhabit situations, students learn proactive responses to defuse bullying while also discovering and exploring their own connections to this topic.

The Kentucky Arts Council, the state arts agency, provides operating support to Walden Theatre /

Blue Apple Players and Walden Theatre have merged, creating a comprehensive organization with a shared heritage of excellence in theatre-based education to better serve young people across the region both in & after school.

DISCOVER DRAMAGrades PreK-12 | $100/hr. per classroom*WORKSHOP: Students participate in character- & story-driven theatre exercises in a fun, energetic 1-hour introduction to foundational acting techniques. RESIDENCY: A deeper exploration of fundamentals learned in the workshop, this may be crafted to suit specific grade levels and curricula including an optional culminating performance.

•  Literacy and School Readiness (early childhood)•  Improvisation or Playbuilding (elementary/middle/high school)•  Tableaux (culture, art, & media literacy for middle/high school)

Workshops (single-session classes), residencies (in-depth, multi-session classes), and touring shows take place at your location and are instructed and performed by theatre professionals. No busses required! Student matinées take place at Walden Theatre or other off-site performance venue. Call for details.

STORYTIME WORKSHOP: Grades PreK-1 | $100/session per classroom*This lively storytelling program uses interactive listening to build comprehension and language development–skills vital to early literacy. Children participate imaginatively, contributing sound and movement under the guidance of the storyteller.

MOVEMENT FOR STORIESWORKSHOP: Grades K-3 | $100/hr. per classroom*english: In this immersive workshop, a teaching artist shares an original tale – transforming any classroom into an active learning environment where students become the characters, from rambunctious elves to underwater creatures and more!spanish: Teaching artists guide students in playing characters in Spanish language stories that build vocabulary and grammar including greetings, colors, emotions, and more!

EXPLORING HISTORY THROUGH DRAMAWORKSHOP: Grades 4-8 | $100/hr. per classroom*Support almost any history unit with an interactive theatre workshop where students use their imaginations to analyze the characters and events they’re studying.RESIDENCY: Grades 4-8 | $800/classroom* (8 hrs.) Bring historical figures & events to life! Students engage in creative problem-solving through writing & performing episodes from their curriculum.

EXPLORING ASTRONOMY THROUGH DRAMARESIDENCY: Grades 4-8 | $600/classroom* (6 hrs.)Students participate in interactive theatre games that reinforce the science curriculum. The residency culminates in performances of student created scenes identifying misconceptions about Earth & the universe and are intended to educate peers about astronomy concepts including the seasons, the reason for day & night, phases of the moon, and more.

ZOMBIE MATHRESIDENCY: Grades 9-12 | $800/classroom* (8 hrs.)

Students explore real-world applications of Algebra and Geometry by writing & performing original scenes that educate peers about how the math they’re learning in school could one day save their lives in a zombie apocalypse. A spoonful of zombies makes the math go down.

Walden Theatre/Blue Apple Players is home to the award-winning Conservatory Program. Young people ages 5-18 gain intensive acting experience in after-school classes and by performing a full season of plays. No experience or audition is required to enroll!

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNESTOCT 2015: Grades 6-12 | $7/studentOscar Wilde’s famous comedy – widely considered the finest ever written – features inventive dialogue and characters that lampoon Victorian moral codes. The play complements a study of English society or literature.

FRANZ KAFKA’S

THE METAMORPHOSISJAN 2016: Grades 6-12 | $7/studentGregor Samsa awakes from uneasy dreams to find himself transformed into a giant insect. With his identity in crisis – and his mind, heart, & body at odds – he struggles with social isolation even as he desires acceptance. Students can draw connections with contemporary issues or with other familiar tales (Spiderman gone wrong?). This adaptation of Kafka’s classic is a perfect tie-in with study of the early 20th century & the World Wars. Inquire about pre- & post-show workshops.

CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORYFEB 2016: Grades 4-8 | $7/studentThis interactive program begins with a performance of our Nation In Crisis show – which transports students to key moments and events from the Civil Rights Era – before continuing the conversation in small groups. Teaching artists expand on and contextualize the Civil Rights episodes they witnessed with fun, engaging activities that deepen knowledge and link critical moments in history to current events and issues.

Celebrate Black History is performed by a professional actor. Other Student Matinées performed peer-to-peer by talented young actors in the Conservatory Program.

JOHNNY APPLESEEDOCT-NOV 2015: Grades PreK-6 | no student limit | $1500One of our most requested musicals! Johnny Appleseed tells the legendary story of John Chapman’s travels through Ohio, Indiana, & Kentucky (tin pot on his head) seeding & tending apple trees ahead of the westward march of America’s pioneers. This fully-produced 1-hour show (feat. live bluegrass music!) illustrates our shared responsibility to care for the environment & improve our world. Produced by special arrangement with Dramatic Publishing, Woodstock, Ill.

STORYTIME THEATRE

RUMPELSTILTSKINDEC 2015-MAR 2016: Grades PreK-5 | 250 students | $500A new spin on a classic! From one predicament to the next, the miller’s daughter works through her problems with determination in this traditional German fairy tale. The production features props, costumes, and set pieces hand-made from familiar objects – showing kids that resourcefulness is a gateway to creative expression. StoryTime Theatre includes a 30-minute performance and post-show Q&A with the artists.

NATION IN CRISISJAN-MAR 2016: Grades 4-8 | 250 students | $500This interactive, one-hour production blends discussion and performance – transporting students to key moments and events from the Civil Rights Era. From Little Rock to Montgomery and from Martin Luther King, Jr. to a Tuskegee Airman, students encounter history as it was happening in those challenging times. And the teaching artist guides students as they respond to the voices and scenes they witness.
