Watch this YouTube clip …Why not make some notes to help you with your ‘research’ page.
[Warning … language a little ‘crude’ in places … uses word crap and ‘poo’ emoji – perhaps don’t play with younger siblings present]

This is
the end

When he was creating this piece he said that he didn’t have a plan …. There was no right or wrong and that it
was all about ‘self expression’. He did say though that he couldn’t stop thinking about JEAN BASQUIAT’s work.
Basquiat was a self taught artist, who was broke, lived in
New York and he died young. He sold a painting for :
£110 million dollars!!

So far in this project we have been setting assignments which link to
different artists who look at aspects of ‘Human Condition’. This goes from looking at starting points such as : skeletal form and anatomy to
portraiture and mixed media art, collage (faces). You have also
developed your drawing skills, working from imagery relating to these
themes and undertaken your own research. This PowerPoint
introduces you to ‘OUTSIDER ART’ AND other artists’ whose work often links to ‘emotion/personal
experience/conflict and INNER MIND.
All the work you have done so far relates to HUMAN
CONDITION. This is your second extended GCSE Art
coursework project. What does Human Condition mean?
Have a look at your mind map …. Could you add some of the key words mentioned above in that definition … What it is to be human!’
Some Artists:
* Asquint
* Jess Reno * Mikey Welsh
• Madge Hill * Nigel Tomm
* Raphael Vicenzi (My dead pony).
There are many … often in art is good to use google and put in terms such as: Fine Art – image and text or: Art
with a message artists images .. By putting the word
‘image’ in or ‘fine art’ can work well with finding exciting artists.*
Some Artists images by these artists that you
may want to use when you are developing
YOUR RESEARCH PAGES …. Remember to try to write about the actual art work and EXPLAIN
and DESCRIBE what you see and think clearly
using ‘art specific vocabulary’.
I will also attach a PP which shows good
sketchbook pages inspired by ‘INNER MIND’ ARTISTS. Which you may find useful!
BASQUIAT French: 1960 – 1988. American artist of Haitian and
Puerto ‘rican descent. His neo-expressionist paintings were being exhibited in
galleries and museums internationally.
Basquiat’s art focussed on dichotomies such as WEATH – v-
POVERTY. INTEGRATION – v- SEGREGATION and INNER –v- OUTER
EXPERIENCE. He appropriated poetry, drawing and painting, and
married text and image. ABSTRACTION, FIGURATION and historical
information mixed with contemporary CRITIQUE.
Basquiat used social commentary in his paintings as a tool for introspection and for identifying with his experiences
in the black community of his time.
HIS WORK WAS ACUTELY POLITICAL and direct in their criticism of COLONIALISM and support for CLASS
STRUGGLE. He died of a heroin overdose at his art studio at the age of 27.In 2017 at an auction a 1982 painting by Basquiat depicting a black skull with red and black rivulets set a
new record high for any American artist at auction, selling for $110.5 million.
Basquiat produced around 1500 drawings, as
well as around 600 paintings and many
sculpture and mixed media works. Basquiat
drew constantly, and often used objects around
him as surfaces when paper was not
immediately at hand. Since childhood, Basquiat
produced cartoon-inspired drawings when
encouraged by his mother’s interest in art, and drawing became a part of his expression as an
artist. His drawngs were produced in many
different media, most commonly ink, pencil,
felt-tip or marker and ‘oil-stick. Sometimes he
used photocopies of fragments of his drawings
to paste on to the canvas of larger paintings.

JESSE RENOHe is a self-taught American painter and
muralist, whose art is based on his
interest in native and primitive
societies. Reno himself terms his art as
neo-primitivism. He was born in

The Following are sketchbook pages taken from a Yr 12 A – Level student. They give you an ideas of what ‘Research’ pages can look like. She was inspired by OUTSIDER ART!
What has the student done that is so
good ……
Clear title – name of artist
Interesting lay out
Creative presentation
Careful copy of part of art work
Written notes detailed – own words
…. Show understanding of art work and express students’ ideas and
thoughts!
Pages about Madge Hill - Writing about her …. Materials ….. Her approach to her work
Own Version (inspired by her) …….. Little copies/studies of her work using ‘doodle’ approach ….
Little notes and ANNOTATIONS …. We hear the students’ voice, it is like she talking to us when you read her work … she lets us know WHAT SHE IS THINING!!!
CREATIVE PRESENTATION ….. PLENTY OF DETAILED WRITTEN NOTES ABOUT THE ARTIST … KEY VOCABULARY USED TO EXPLAIN AND DESCRIBE HOW THE ARTIST
WORKS ……
OWN RESPONSE TO Mikey Welsh …… She includes a picture of a piece of work that she did which is outside of her sketchbook …
Little experiments with materials and techniques
inspired by artist Frida Kahlo ….. She works in a similar way …..
Lively and personal responses in sketchbook
Outsider ART NOW – WHAT YOU NEED TO DO!
Core - Task 1 (2 hours) - Produce a research page ( at least one page) about ‘OUTSIDER’ ART. Explain what it is … what is is about …. Give examples of artists who are considered to do ‘Outsider Art’ eg: Basquiat (you choose one).
Make sure you include at least 4 examples of that artists’ work. Write the title of the work if you know it.
Then write about the images that you have presented. DESCRIBE WHAT YOU SEE AND EXPLAIN YOUR THOUGHTS.
Use the ‘writing about artists’ work prompt sheet and the subheadings MOOD/PROCESS/CONTENT AND FORM.
Core - Task 2 – (2 hours) Create at least one piece of work ‘IN THE STYLE OF THE ARTIST you have researched. Think
about how they approached their work. What did you find out when you researched your artist? Eg: Did they just
doodle, draw what came to mind .. Use their imagination …use any materials they could get their hands on…“When I watched Resso’s YouTube clip he said 3 things which I found inspiring …• Follow INSTINCT over LOGIC
• Be directed by your FEELINGS
• He listened to music as he worked (he actually wrote the music). Could music influence the mood of your work?
Extension: Spend more time on each of the tasks above. Look at a wider range of artists … COMPARE AND contrast them …. Generate more of your own responses … you could work BIG AND OUT OF YOUR SKETCHBOOK….
