AUTUMN EDITION

Welcome to another edition of our Community Links newspaper.

We are always very pleased to be able to publish such a wide ranging publication, and we must thank the efforts of the Community office staff for spending many hours putting it all together. We mustn’t forget too, the many authors of the various articles found within the newspaper. We are very grateful to them.

Another autumn is upon us, and you have the opportunity to read some of the activities and events that took place over the recent (warmer!) summer months. Some of Wyvern students experienced the heat of a Moroccan summer trekking and working in communities very different from their local environs in southern Hampshire (Morocco page 7). Another group of our students enjoyed an inaugural

own research vessel RRS Discovery when it was docked in Southampton in October.

The 10K race was yet again a very special occasion in our calendar, and next year will be the 5th running of the race, in another Olympic year, so it really has become a legacy event. More of that to come in forthcoming editions! It showed the whole community working together on a fantastic event that spans a whole range of participants from first time runners to regular club athletes, and the odd celebrity from time to time!

I hope you find the articles and news in this edition stimulating and interesting, and we look forward to welcoming you to one of our events in the new (2015-16) academic year.

Editorial trip to a more local destination (Kingswood IOW page 10) for a memorable and inspiring trip for them (helped by the lovely September sunshine!)

Contained within this edition are articles about two of our ‘key summer’ events the annual 10K race and the biennial STEM week. Both of these events showcased Wyvern and its community at its best. The maritime week events gave students and the community exciting opportunities focused on the theme of ’the sea’. Many of you may have seen the fantastic centre piece at the front of college. This vessel called ‘Collective Spirit’ was created as part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad and it really represented the spirit and cooperation of the week that I hope many of you enjoyed. The maritime week still perpetuates through the College calendar with students undertaking visits this term. Some lucky students were able to embark and tour the Natural Environment Research Councils

Fair Oak and Horton Heath Community will meet in the Square, Fair Oak on Monday 14th December to sing Carols around the Christmas tree. The event will start at 6pm to 8pm.

School choirs will be performing and there will be plenty of stalls to browse. Please remember to bring your torch.

All Welcome

After a few scorching years, the Wyvern 10K for 2015 took place in much cooler and wetter conditions on Sunday 12 July. However enthusiasm wasn’t dampened and it was another event filled with a great deal of effort and lots of smiles. Special guest, Francis Benali, started the race before joining the field himself, and as the runners disappeared out of the College, they were encouraged on by the Liberty Pride Cheerleaders who added real pizazz to the proceedings. Out on the road, Hedge End Running Club members enthusiastically cheered the runners on and made sure they were all safely steered round the course. Richard Waldron from Southampton AC led the field home in 34:40, closely followed by the Men’s Junior Champion Luke Powell (also from Southampton AC) in 34:49. The women were headed up by Lucy May from Stubbington Green Runners & AC in 41:54, and their Junior Champion was Maisie Truscott in 56:28. Stubbington Green Runners & AC were the women’s club champions with Lucy May, Dawn Haynes Sewell and Hollie Smith. Eastleigh RC took the men’s club with Andrew White, Josh Wilson, David Coak and James Johnson – who, astonishingly, finished 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th respectively. As an Olympic Legacy race, the Wyvern 10K looks to inspire the next generation of junior runners and this year encouraged twice as many 18 and under runners than in 2014. The junior category winners were Nicholas Hawkins in 38:34 and Jasmine Newberry (both from Eastleigh RC) in 1:02:41. Led home by Francis Benali and his son Luke, the “CF on the Run” team took this year’s team prize and raised over £2K for the Cystic

Wyvern 10K 2015Fibrosis Trust, and the race itself looks set to be able to make a sizable donation to local projects run by Macmillan Cancer Support. The winners’ prizes were presented by sponsors Nick

Deas from HP Contracts, Nicola Mitchell from Quality Solicitors Knight Polson, and Darren Butler from Ramptons. Additional sponsors were Aspire Estate Agents, Up and Running, Fair Oak

Glass, Fyffes and Caterlink. Everyone is welcome back next year on 10 July 2016, which will mark the 5 year anniversary of the race in an Olympic year.

A big thank you to our Sponsors

Community LinksBook ReviewThe wind and rain is blowing a gale outside, whilst indoors you can sit in the warm with a hot drink in one hand and a good book in the other, what could be better; especially if that book is Beyond Black by Hilary Mantel.

Beyond Black won’t be for everyone, it is a very dark tale, but as you would expect from the Booker Prize winner, it is a gripping story, with terrific characters and beautifully written.

The book is about Alison, a medium; she has thousands of followers who turn up at her gigs as she travels the

psychic circuit in the outer London suburbs, but Alison has a very troubled past. For Alison the dead are just as alive as the living and they give her no peace. Whilst Collette, Alison’s assistant, is trying to make money and a career from Alison’s gift, Alison is trying to survive her ghostly tormentors.

Beyond Black

WyvernBook ReviewWe are a small friendly group of readers who meet every month or so, to discuss a book we have all been reading. We have been running for seven years now and have a solid core membership as well as members who drop in and out.

Last month we read The 2015 Pulizer Prize winner All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. It also won the Carnegie prize and is a New York Times best seller, but more importantly it is a page turning, compelling read, from page one. It is set in St. Malo in 1944, when the allies are shelling the city to remove the remaining

Nazis. The two main protagonists are Marie-Laure, a blind French girl and Werner a German radio operator. The book jumps back and forth in time, with the bittersweet and haunting tale of how these two characters ended up in St Malo.

If you would like to join in with a discussion at our next meeting you will be most welcome. We meet at 7.00 p.m. in Wyvern College library (exact date not yet decided on).

Wyvern College students swapped the cold English Summer for the heat of Morocco during the school holidays, as part of an expedition run by Schools Worldwide which included a community project, mountain trek and sightseeing.

The forty one students had spent the last year fundraising for the expedition, as a key aim of the experience is that each student raises the money to pay for their trip. As a result, students organised a variety of cake sales and car boot sales, along with car washing, garden clearance and raffles. Fitness sessions and a practice expedition prepared them for the physical challenges of the Atlas Mountains.

During the community project, students enjoyed the hospitality of the Berber villages, and supported the local villagers with painting in a school, building irrigation channels and dry stone walls. The summit of M’Goun – 4068 metres and the second highest in the High Atlas Mountains – was the focus for the five day mountain trek and a real test of endurance. Students also experienced the hustle and bustle of Marrakech, and the beautiful fishing town of Essaouria. Haggling and bartering skills were put to the test in the souks as they sought out souvenirs, and camel trekking along the coast was another highlight.

“The best school trip ever” was the verdict from one student, whilst others have been inspired to travel further afield in the future. Trip leader, Mike Eldridge, said, “It has been a privilege to be involved in offering students such a wonderful expedition, experiencing a new culture, different environments and unforgettable life-changing moments.”

A stunning performance at the Music for Youth National Festival in Birmingham in July rounded off an outstanding year for Wyvern’s Soul Band. The National Festival is a chance for young people from around the country to showcase their musical talent. Over 40,000 young musicians across 50 locations performed in regional festivals, with 8,000 being selected to go through to the five day event in Birmingham. The Wyvern Soul Band was one of only 8 bands across the country selected for the Jazz and Soul category.

Rehearsed by Geoff Lai & Ted Carrasco, the band learns all of the material

“by ear” and played a wonderful range of music for their appearance including: “All Night Long” by Lionel Richie, “The House that Jack Built” by Aretha Franklin, “Easy” by The Commodores, and “Lady Day and John Coltrane” by Gil Scott-Heron.

Barton Peveril College Soul Band also joined the Wyvern Band in Birmingham, meaning that a quarter of the eight Jazz and Soul bands invited to take part from across the country came from the local community, which is an incredible achievement for music in the Eastleigh area.

The final event of the year is always tinged with sadness as it is the last opportunity for outgoing Year 11 students

to take part. However, even though the personnel in the band changes from year to year, Geoff Lai and Ted Carrasco work tirelessly with the students to ensure that exceptional standards are maintained, resulting in their regular selection for the National Festival finals.

One of this year’s band members said, “Being part of the Soul Band has introduced me to lots of music that I wouldn’t have listened to. I felt really proud to have reached the national stage in the festival and it was a great experience! I hope to be part of it again.”

Students at Wyvern College, Fair Oak, held a non-uniform day in September, raising a grand total of £1,390 for the Great Western Air Ambulance.

The day was organised by Donna Howard, Pastoral Leader, in response to a road traffic accident involving

a former student, Jordan Glasspool. During an eighty mile charity cycle ride across the Cotswolds, Jordan unfortunately collided with a car and sustained extensive critical injuries. His family have said that the role of the Air Ambulance on that day was pivotal in transporting

him to hospital quickly. When Jordan was a student at Wyvern, he participated in various sporting activities and was an integral part of College life, well-liked by both staff and students.

Students and staff felt that raising money for the Great Western Air Ambulance was an appropriate way to show their support for Jordan and his family at this difficult time. It costs £125,000 each month to keep one Air Ambulance flying and without donations it would simply not be possible

and many people across the country would not survive some of the most serious accidents.

Mrs Howard said,

“I am delighted that students contributed generously towards raising money for this excellent charity and our thoughts are with Jordan and his family as he continues his recovery”.

Twenty five Wyvern students experienced outdoor education at its best in a residential visit to Kingswood Outdoor Centre on the Isle of Wight early in September. The Centre is situated in a superb cliff top location, overlooking Whitecliff Bay, with direct beach access and specialises in delivering a range of outdoor activities in a safe and secure environment.

During the action-packed trip, students participated in up to 7 activities a day including abseiling, climbing, leap of faith, team challenges and an obstacle course. The glorious weather arrived on cue enabling the group to

Kingswood Outdoor Centre Visit also undertake body boarding in the sea which proved to be a real highlight of the trip. Students learnt to work and communicate as a team, to step outside of their personal comfort zones, and to challenge themselves. They showed real persistence in completing the activities, with some even overcoming personal phobias such as a fear of heights. Staying in camping lodges, the students had daily room checks to instil pride in their rooms and there was certainly some healthy competition between the groups!

Martin Kerslake, trip leader, said, “This was a really rewarding trip in a great

How sustainable is Whiteley Shopping Centre? That was the enquiry question 100 Year 11 Wyvern students were tasked with answering for their GCSE Geography Controlled Assessment on a recent visit to Whiteley.

Students met with Darren Gooding, Sustainability Manager at the Centre, who delivered an interesting presentation on the history of Whiteley and how the development is socially, economically and environmentally sustainable. Students then toured the site completing traffic surveys (who would have thought over 100 cars entered the site at 9.45am on a random Wednesday morning!), questionnaires,

location with great instructors and the children made the most of everything on offer.”

Geography Field Tripsustainability audits, housing surveys, and field sketches, all of which will contribute towards their enquiry question, which accounts for up to 25% of their final GCSE mark.

The day finished with a hula hooping competition using the hula hoop the Geography Department brought to teach the Milankovitch theory, an explanation of long-term climate change!

Emily Goss, Geography Curriculum Leader, said “A fantastic day was had by all and the students were able to collect a wealth of primary data for their controlled assessments. Students were exemplary and members of the

public praised their behaviour and work ethic.”

Wyvern Sport & FitnessThe biggest part of my journey to a healthier and fitter retirement started with Geoff Knell, a personal trainer and instructor at Wyvern Activate Gym.

Two Goals:

(1) to be as fit as I could be for my age.

2) To lose weight.

Even with injuries Geoff has encouraged and supported

me, showing me alternative exercises to do enabling me to be more fit and active than before. His knowledge and expertise has taken me further than I could have hoped for.

I have lost weight (22 lbs to date) and quite a few inches.

My much improved core strength has helped me feel much more secure when horse riding and strengthened my back.

A journey …From 3 leg lifts to 30 not bad even if I say so myself!

Many, many achievements too numerous to mention here, ask me and I will proudly tell you.

So my thanks to Geoff for believing in me and getting me to believe in myself.

Thanks to the staff at the gym for their encouragement, help and cheerful greetings.

Kathy Brown.

Chances are at some time in your life you’ve made a New Year’s resolution and then broken it. This year, stop the cycle of resolving to make change and then not following through. If your resolution is to take better care of yourself and get healthy, you will have a much better year if your resolution sticks. Here are 10 tips to help you get started.

1. Be Realistic The surest way to fall short of your goal is to make your goal unattainable. For instance, resolving to NEVER eat your favourite food again is setting you up to fail. Instead, strive for a goal that is attainable, such as avoiding it more often than you do now.2. Plan Ahead Don’t make your resolution on New Year’s Eve. If you wait until the last minute, it will be based on your mind-set that particular day. Instead, it should be planned well before December 31 arrives.3. Outline Your Plan Decide how you will deal with the temptation to skip that exercise class or have that piece of cake. This could include calling on a friend for help, practising positive thinking and self-talk, or reminding yourself how your “bad” will affect your goal.4. Make a “Pros” and “Cons” List It may help to see a list of items on paper to keep your motivation strong. Develop this list over time, and ask others to

contribute to it. Keep your list with you and refer to it when you need help keeping your resolve.5. Talk About It Don’t keep your resolution a secret. Tell friends and family members who will be there to support your resolve to change yourself for the better or improve your health. The best-case scenario is to find a buddy who shares your New Year’s resolution and motivate each other.6. Reward Yourself This doesn’t mean that you can eat an entire box of chocolates if your resolution is to eat a better diet. Instead, celebrate your success by treating yourself to something you enjoy that doesn’t contradict your resolution. If you have been sticking to your promise to eat better, for example, reward yourself with new fitness clothing or by going to a movie with a friend.7. Track Your Progress Keep track of each small success. Short-term goals are easier to keep, and each small accomplishment will help keep you

motivated. Instead of focusing on losing 30 pounds, focus on losing the first five. Keep a food journal to help you stay on track, and reward yourself for each five pounds lost.8. Don’t Beat Yourself Up Obsessing over the occasional slip won’t help you achieve your goal. Do the best you can each day, and take one day at a time.9. Stick to It Experts say it takes about 21 days for a new activity to become a habit and six months for it to become part of your personality. It won’t happen overnight, so be persistent and patient!10. Keep Trying If you have totally run out of steam when it comes to keeping your resolution by mid-February, don’t despair. Start over again! Recommit yourself for 24 hours. You can do anything for 24 hours. The 24-hour increments will soon build on each other and, before you know it, you will be back on track.

THE SCHOOL REPORTDURLEY PRIMARY SCHOOL

FAIR OAK INFANT SCHOOL

Durley School Children Go Out and AboutThis is the time of year for children at Durley Primary School to team build and meet new challenges on residential visits.

Year 3 and 4 had a wonderful three day experience at the Minstead

Study Centre in the New Forest. The children walked barefoot through the bog land, walked through ditches, made compost, set moth traps and got to know each other better over a three day trip learning about sustainability and making our planet a greener place. For some of the children this was their first time away from home. They returned full of

Ready, Steady, Cook! The builders have been very busy at Fair Oak Infant School over the Summer Holiday, updating and extending our cookery room. By knocking two smaller rooms into a much larger space they have created a room that enables a group of children to work around an island. All the worktops and appliances have been installed at the children’s height, allowing them to work safely. This fantastic resource has been partly funded by Friends of Fair Oak Infant School

stories of their adventures – as well as switching off lights, checking taps and collecting fruit to make compost for the school gardens.

The children in Years 5 and 6 went a bit further afield to the Hampshire Mountain Centre in the Brecon Beacons, in Wales. After the initial challenge of bed making, the children went on to enjoy activities such as mountain walking to the top of Pen-y-Fan, a

day long canoeing trip, waterfall walking and caving, all in the beautiful mountain setting. As the centre is free from light pollution the children loved their night time activities including being wowed by the sight of shooting stars, the Milky Way and star constellations. The children and staff were extremely lucky to have a week of bright sunshine to see the Welsh mountains at their best.

and cooking resources have been purchased through the Sainsbury’s Active Kids scheme.

Following the summer holiday the children were excited to see the changes that had taken place. The paint had hardly dried before Year One were cooking! They cooked dishes relating to their class country; Spain Class cooked Spanish Omelette, Italy Class made a pasta sauce, Germany Class created Lebkuchen (spiced biscuits) and Denmark Class baked some Danish biscuits. It won’t be

long before Year R and Year Two are also creating their own culinary delights.

The children are learning new skills, such as; cutting, whisking, simmering, rolling, stirring and measuring. They have even been enjoying washing up! All useful skills to help at home. Our curriculum will enable the children

to practise and refine these skills.

Healthy eating and living have a high profile within the curriculum and our new cookery room will help develop the children’s skills in creating healthy food. You never know, the next Jamie Oliver or future winner of the Great British Bake Off or Masterchef may come from Fair Oak Infant School!

FAIR OAK JUNIOR SCHOOL

THE SCHOOL REPORTUPHAM CE PRIMARY SCHOOL

We are always looking for ways to make learning as engaging and relevant for children as possible at Upham School and one way we achieve this is with visitors who inspire the children. We are also lucky that so many of our parents are able to offer us their time to discuss their job and particular skills they have.

This term, Class 4 (our Year 5 and 6 children) has been learning about food in ‘The Great Upham Bake Off’. A visitor representing a cooperative allotment group in Eastleigh talked to the class about seasonal produce and the benefits of traditional growing varieties. He brought with him a huge range of different vegetables, some hard to recognise. The children carefully chopped, pealed and cooked them to make tasty vegetable soup! This

understanding of food preparation was then further developed through a visit from a parent who is a Home Economics teacher. She talked to the children about food preparation and key skills required. Children’s knowledge of how food arrives in our supermarkets was illuminated by an interesting talk from a parent who works as a buyer for a food distribution company. Understanding how fruits are sourced and shipped was really interesting.

Our younger children in Class 2 (Years 1 and 2) enjoyed a visit from a parent who is a doctor. He helped the children understand

Year 3’s Sensational Scooting SessionsOn Tuesday 22nd and Wednesday 23rd September, Year 3 children were visited by Pedal Power. The focus of the visit was to teach

the Year 3 children about keeping themselves safe whilst using their scooters on public footpaths and roads. Whilst most children brought their own scooters and safety helmets to school for the day, Pedal Power were able to

how they sense the world and even showed the children how to hear through their skulls!

Another class enjoyed a visit from a chemist from Southampton University. They explored how different materials behave and found out that the same processes they use in their science work is used by real scientists.

All of this makes learning real and helps the children to recognise that what they learn in school does relate to real roles and jobs, developing high aspirations for themselves in the process.

supply scooters and helmets for the children to use.

The Year 3 children had an amazing session taking part in road safety sessions whilst using scooters, as well as playing some games that further developed their scooting skills. There was much excitement when a scooting circuit was set up on the school playground that involved limbo dancing, a traditional popular dance contest

that originated on the island of Trinidad. Limbo dancing whilst manoeuvring round the playground on a scooter proved to be quite a challenge for some, but great fun was had by all!

THE SCHOOL REPORTSTOKE PARK INFANT SCHOOL

STOKE PARK JUNIOR SCHOOLThe Iron MenSome terrifying noises. Some terrifying sights. Some terrifying thoughts. What had come to Stoke Park Woods? What had left a trail of destruction? What was lurking in the trees? Year 3 children went to investigate…luckily they had read Ted Hughes’ The Iron Man and realised from the evidence in the woods that the metallic skin and large footprints had been left behind after a visit from the

creature from the story. So, with the much-appreciated help from some parents, the children set about making their own giants. They worked in teams and used recycled materials to good effect. As you can see from the pictures, the children created some fantastic looking iron men. Hopefully there won’t be a space-bat-angel-dragon visiting the woods anytime soon…

Year 2The children in Year 2 have had a busy and exciting start to their new school year! Their topic of ‘Underwater Adventure’ has inspired lots of fun learning. The topic started with a visit from

the amazing Blue Reef Aquarium’s ‘Rock Pool Road Show’. They brought in lots of underwater creatures for the children to meet, including a starfish and crab. All the children loved stroking the different animals, particularly the slimy ones! As well as learning lots of new facts about the ocean and the creatures that live in it, the

children have used it to inspire their art work. They have produced some of their own sculptures based on the work of Andy Goldsworthy and have made their own 3D

dioramas. Now they can’t wait to start learning all about the Titanic and are looking forward to visiting the Sea City Museum. What a great start to Year 2!

Wild BunchAs part of their rainforest topic, Year 5 visited nearby Marwell Zoo. They had been studying animals that lived in the rainforest and this was an opportunity to see some of those animals up close. As part of their lessons, children have been learning about the habitats that the animals live in as well as how different creatures have adapted to live in their natural environment. Children studied the various layers of the rainforest and the particular

animals that are specific to that layer. Looking at the environment on a larger scale, Year 5 learnt that even trips to local shops and the products they buy there can have an effect on our environment.

Wyvern’s annual Careers Evening was bigger and better than ever this year, with over 22 exhibitors providing an excellent opportunity for Year 11 students to consider a range of post-16 opportunities.

Local colleges were well represented with Barton Peveril, Eastleigh, Peter Symonds’, Brockenhurst, Fareham, Itchen, Richard Taunton and Sparsholt all attending. Apprenticeship providers including Barratt Homes and CITB, Clarke Willmott, HTP Hotel/Catering Training, Ian Williams, IBM, My Coaching, SETA, and Yellow Dot Nursery provided information on alternative routes post-16. Also popular were the stands run by the Armed Forces, Winchester University and the Princes Trust.

Annual Careers EveningKatie Bruce, Careers Co-ordinator, said, “Over 165 students attended the evening and exhibitors said how engaging our students were and how well they had prepared for the event.”

Wyvern’s ongoing aim is to raise the aspirations of all students and the College is keen to work with local businesses, particularly in unusual professions. The College has many careers events during the year including enterprise days, mock interview day, work experience and careers presentations, and support with these is always appreciated. In addition, it is always of benefit to hear from previous Wyvern students who have established successful careers and may be willing to share their stories.

If you would like to find out more information about how your business can get involved with the College, or are a past Wyvern student, please contact Katie Bruce at [email protected].

Thought for the DayProgress is the product of human agency. Things get

European Day of Languages

Wyvern students had great fun taking part in the annual European Day of Languages celebration at the end of September, with a variety of exciting activities to improve and test their language skills.

The week’s assemblies had an international flavour with comparisons between the Berber community in Morocco and the Basque community focussing on their multilingualism and their sense of belonging to a community through pride in their common language. All language teachers taught taster sessions in different languages and some students, who are native speakers of a language other than English, became teachers for a lesson with Polish, Afrikaans, Turkish and Italian amongst the languages covered.

Other subjects contributed to the day with History exploring the different nationalities represented on the Titanic and the “class” they were travelling in and Geography devising a quiz on the EU. Maths began their lessons with a number square in different languages and English discussed how so much of our vocabulary has its roots in other languages. The school canteen also produced an international menu for the day and the

Fountain Café supported the event by baking an array of international cakes.

Visiting teachers David and Diana Snuggs gave entertaining lessons on Russian and Hebrew, with

David teaching students to sing and perform the Song of the Volga Boatmen, as demonstrated in the photo below, and Diana providing the opportunity to learn traditional Hebrew dances and to try out some simple phrases.

At the end of the week, 60 Year 8 students prepared and delivered short lessons in German for pupils at Fair Oak Infant School. The lessons were very well received and the students put in an incredible amount of effort both in terms of the preparation and delivery.

The aim of Maritime Week was to raise the profile of the national Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths and IT (STEMIT) agenda, with a focus on the maritime sector which employs over 531,000 people and contributes more than £26.5 billion each year to our economy. Students experienced workshops run by local maritime industry experts including Warsash Maritime Academy/Southampton Solent University, Exxon Mobil, Mary Rose Trust, QinetiQ, the Royal Navy, the Marine Skills Centre and Lloyd’s Register. Special guest speakers included Simon Watt,

biologist and TV presenter, and Jonny Duddle, author and illustrator of pirate stories.

A popular talking point at the front of the college was Collective Spirit’, the 30-ft state-of-the-art sailing boat fashioned from hundreds of donated wooden objects and produced by Lone Twin for the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. The highlight of the week was an evening Community Maritime Festival with presentations by the Royal Navy and Exxon Mobil, exhibition stands from a range of maritime-related companies, the Maritime Archaeology Trust Discovery Bus, food-tasting, boat building and racing, and activities for younger seafarers including a pirate-themed bouncy castle. The week was staged in conjunction with SeaVision, a non-profit organisation that is closely linked to the maritime sector and works with education partners under the STEM agenda.

Wyvern students who are part of the Surveying Pathways programme recently shared their experiences from the last year in a promotional video which will be shown to Year 9 students as part of the next application round.

Surveying Pathways enables selected Year 10 and 11 students to undertake work experience for a day a week at one of five local chartered

surveying firms: Evolution 5, Gleeds, Hampshire County Council, HP Contracts and Sir Robert McAlpine. Students have the opportunity to contribute to real work projects, learn from the expertise of staff at the various companies, and experience a professional

work environment. The two year course leads to an NVQ Level 2 in Surveying. Students have to complete this alongside their normal GCSE studies and there is an expectation that they will catch-up on work missed, which in turn has helped them to improve other skills such

as prioritising and meeting deadlines.

Full details on the programme will be provided to all Year 9 students later this term and applications are accepted in the Spring Term. Mr Williams, Assistant Headteacher, said, “This qualification is something that the real world will recognise as a skill; feedback from students has been excellent and they

are thoroughly enjoying this opportunity”.

In addition, the college has links with Lakesmere as part of their ‘School to Work’ project. Students work on real projects in Lakesmere’s Design and Quantity Surveying departments for one day a week and receive a diploma qualification at the end of the course. During this year, students have helped to design the external glass panels for a new shopping centre in the centre of Birmingham and were able

With the approach of shorter days and darker evenings the Community Speedwatch team for Fair Oak and Horton Heath would like to remind residents that the village already has a 30 mph speed limit through the majority of roads in the Parish. It is the team’s job to deter motorists from exceeding the 30 mph limit, with the support of the County Roads Policing Unit to enforce the speed limit. Many motorists have forgotten Highway Code Rule 103:

“You MUST NOT exceed the maximum speed limits for the road and for your vehicle. Street lights usually mean that there is a 30 mph speed limit unless there are signs showing another limit.”

Remember that a vehicle travelling at 30 mph or less will cause serious injuries to a pedestrian whether adult or child. At 40 mph, the collision is likely to be fatal.

The difference of a few miles per hour can mean the difference between life and death. The faster someone is driving, the less time they have to stop if something unexpected happens. If you kill someone while speeding, you will have to live with the long-term emotional consequences. Speed limits are there for a reason.

Training Surveyors of the Future to visit the site to see their finished work.

Mr Newton, Headteacher, said, “I am delighted that we are able to work with the surveying profession to offer

such innovative opportunities to our students. I have no doubt that the range of skills and experiences students have gained will stand them in good stead for their future careers”.

Wyvern table tennis players triumphed recently in the South Winchester District Tournament which was hosted at Wyvern and involved Hamble and Westgate schools.

Henry Moody, Tom Merritt, Akshay Robert and Isaac Porter took on Westgate to win in the final of the Under-16 competition, whilst Luke Vernon, Dan Kimber, Max Proctor and Sam Williams were runners-up in the final of the Under-13 competition, having been beaten by Westgate.

All three schools had a thoroughly enjoyable evening; the players were certainly

competitive but all teams showed good sportsmanship and respect towards their opponents in all games played.

The winning teams now move forward to the School Games National Tournament at County Level which will be played at Testwood College in December, and we wish our U-16 team every success in this event.

Wyvern’s Year 7 students recently enjoyed a visit during assembly from Aaron Phipps, the former GB Paralympian and wheelchair rugby star. Aaron spoke about his life before and after meningitis, a disease which robbed him of his legs and most of his fingers as a boy, and how he overcame adversity to live his life focussed on what he could do rather than what he couldn’t do.

Aaron inspired students to think about their dreams and ambitions and what they might aim for in life. His upbeat and thought-provoking talk was punctuated with videos of him scoring over half Team GB’s points in the London 2012 Paralympic Games and promoting disability sport. A question and answer session finished the assembly, and he encouraged students to ask him anything, ranging from his disability to his heroes to what he eats!

Although a legend in the world

of wheelchair rugby and having performed at ‘the greatest show on earth’ (London 2012), Aaron is always humble and people friendly. The students responded really positively to what he had to say and his requests for them to be the best that they can be. He left the Year 7 audience with the thought that, “if an average boy from Totton can achieve what I have achieved, then why not you?”

The Wyvern Under-15 Cricket Team were crowned District Champions following a close fought final against Mountbatten School.

Having been set 143 for the victory, Finley Middleton opened the batting and quickly reached a retirement score of 30 runs. After the dismissal of Fletcha Middleton (24) and Alex Woolvine (11), Wyvern fell behind the required run rate and victory seemed a tall order. However, Iwan Lynch’s arrival supported by sensible batting from Will Archer and Isaac Porter began the revival. Iwan

hit 24 off of 5 balls, reaching retirement from just 5 overs. Isaac hit the winning runs to claim the Championship by 6 wickets.

Congratulations to all those who took part!
