OVERCOMING TEMPTATION
1 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, 2 where for forty days he was tempted by the
devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry. 3 The devil said
to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”
Luke 4:1-13
4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’” 5 The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all
the kingdoms of the world. 6 And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor;
it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to.
Luke 4:1-13
7 If you worship me, it will all be yours.” 8 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’” 9 The devil led him to
Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. 10 For
it is written:
Luke 4:1-13
“‘He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully; 11 they will lift you up in
their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’” 12 Jesus answered, “It is said:
‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” 13 When the devil had finished all this tempting,
he left him until an opportune time.
Luke 4:1-13

15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as
we are—yet he did not sin.
Hebrews 4:15
13 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by
evil, nor does he tempt anyone.”
James 1:13
If you are full of the Spirit and led by the Spirit, you cannot be overcome, but instead you will
overcome
No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to [humankind]. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you
can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
1 Corinthians 10:13
1) PHYSICAL TEMPATION
He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry. 3 The devil said to
him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” 4 Jesus answered, “It is written:
‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’”
Luke 4:2b-4
3 He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that
man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.
Deuteronomy 8:3
We cannot only recognize God as the Creator of life, but we must also recognize Him as
the Sustainer of life
Refuse to let your life be driven by your carnality and instead by
your spirituality
2) EMOTIONAL TEMPTATION
5 The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of
the world. 6 And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been
given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7 If you worship me, it will all be yours.”
8 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’”
Luke 4:5-8
Satan speaks as if everything on earth belongs to him
28 For dominion belongs to the LORD and he rules over the nations.
Psalm 22:28
“Satan offered Jesus a crown without a cross.”
24 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26 For what will it
profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in
return for his soul?
Matthew 16:24-26
3) SPRITUAL TEMPTATION
9 The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you
are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. 10 For it is written: “‘He will command his angels concerning you to guard
you carefully;
Luke 4:9-12
11 they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’”
12 Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
Luke 4:9-12
Satan is an expert manipulator of scripture. He uses scripture as proof-text – taking scripture out
of its original context
God’s Word is written for our protection, not for our extortion
“Is the LORD among us or not?”
Exodus 17:7
“Did God really say…?”
Genesis 3:1
13 When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.
Luke 4:13
A) PETER USED BY SATAN
21 From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders,
the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be
raised to life. 22 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.
Matthew 16:21-13
“Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!” 23 Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to
me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”
Matthew 16:21-13
B) JUDAS USED BY SATAN
3 Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve. 4 And Judas went to the chief
priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus.
Luke 22:3-4
Satan’s mode of operation is to do everything he possibly can to
get us off-mission
12-13 I remind you, my dear children: Your sins are forgiven in Jesus’ name. You veterans were in on the ground floor, and know the One who started all this; you newcomers have won a big
victory over the Evil One. 13-14 And a second reminder, dear children:
1 John 2:12-15 (MSG)
You know the Father from personal experience. You veterans know the One who started it all;
and you newcomers—such vitality and strength! God’s word is so steady in you. Your fellowship
with God enables you to gain a victory over the Evil One.
