FIRST ACTIVITY
Summary
The British Footwear Association (BFA), the trade association of British
footwear suppliers, has commissioned us to provide: a validated list with contact details of up to 100 relevant footwear
retailers plus contact details of agents at the top-end of the market. The emphasis of our research was to update our database of contacts. It was
further agreed to focus on the larger footwear chains plus top-end retailers and agents in the fashion centres of Berlin, Munich, Düsseldorf, Cologne and Stuttgart.
One hundred and twenty nine companies were approached Germany-wide of which 109 companies confirmed an interest in principle in receiving more information from the BFA.
Our research has indicated that the best opportunities for British footwear suppliers remain with independent footwear retailers and smaller footwear chains, particularly in specific niche areas such as traditional mens shoes,
young fashion/urban wear, designer brands. Major fashion retailers and boutiques also offer opportunities for designer brands. Footwear and fashion
agents remain crucial in this market segment. Limited opportunities are also available in the field of own label production, even though prices seem to be
a hindrance in many cases. This area of the market is best developed by direct contact. Larger retail chains and major purchasing rings only sell very few British brands such as Clarks or Kangaroos. Local distribution is a
crucial factor for success with these companies. The trade fair situation in Germany has changed significantly over the last
years. The leading German trade fair GDS has lost out against international competition like MICAM and EXPO RIVA. In addition, fashion fairs such as Bread&Butter, Premium and the Munich fashion fairs Women and Men have
increased their footwear share. The trade show MODA MADE IN ITALY in particular has become an important order event at the higher end of the
market.

Methodology
The trade team in Düsseldorf has prepared this report using information obtained on a selective basis from local business contacts, local databases, trade publications, fair catalogues, trade associations and the internet.
The contacts in the report have all been validated unless otherwise stated.
A member of the team will have telephoned to check address and contact details and if there is interest in principle in your product. It is unusual for German companies to express firm interest during an initial telephone
conversation but if this is the case it has been noted under the contact details in the comment.
Workplan
A copy of the workplan we agreed in November is attached as an annexe.

Market Information
The German Footwear Market
The German footwear market is the largest in Europe. It is a market that places heavy demands on newcomer's resources and marketing skills and needs a long-term commitment. The market environment is highly
competitive and will remain so against the background of stagnating market growth, intense global competition, the challenge of strong established
brands and a retail sector that is undergoing major restructuring. Italian brands and styles are still very influential on the German market.
Opportunities for British Footwear Suppliers
Opportunities for British Footwear Suppliers are predominantly with independent footwear retailers or with footwear retail chains targeting the premium/higher end of the market. Also fashion boutiques and fashion
retailers selling footwear as a fashion accessory are open to offers from British designer labels. Brand recognition, however, is crucial for success.
Only in the niche areas of traditional mens shoes, young fashion and very high-end designer shoes have British supplies achieved recognition in the German market.
Department store chains such as Karstadt or Kaufhof are planning a trade
up of the footwear departments. This trend might open up opportunities for British premium suppliers either as branded products or in the field of own-label supplies.
In the middle market, British suppliers will find it very difficult to compete against established brands. Purchasing rings did not express any specific
interest in British footwear (apart from Clarks).
Trade Fairs
The German trade fair scene has changed significantly over the last years. The leading fair GDS has lost out against international competition (i.e. Micam, Expo Riva) but also against fashion fairs such as Bread&Butter and
Premium, Munich Fashion Fair Men, Munich Fashion Fair Woman. During validation, several footwear retailers confirmed that they do not consider
GDS to be the key event. They would rather visit the Italian footwear fairs. Moda Made In Italy has become a key event at the premium/high end of the market. Despite the name, exhibitors are not only from Italy but also from
Spain, Portugal etc. The pre-order level at trade fairs has gone down over the last seasons.
Retailers demand more flexibility and smaller deliveries in order to be able to react quickly. Therefore, smaller regional order events have become
more important. Many of these events take place at the shoe order centres in Germany.

Recommended Action Following Receipt of First Activity
This report gives a general overview of the German market. UKTI Germany will be happy to provide individual British footwear suppliers with targeted
market information, research and in-market help.
Write in German to the contacts given in the report, mentioning the trade team that has prepared the list. German firms receive many such approaches from potential suppliers and are very selective in which ones
they respond to. Use the letter to make it clear to the German contact that you are a valuable potential partner. Enclose with the letter:
Your company profile in German including: - overview of your product
- how long your company has been in business - number of employees
- the name of the main contact and his/her responsibilities - the name of the German speaker in the company (if any) - the company's main markets and customers
- your objectives for the German market
Product literature, brochures, etc. This should be in German or at least contain a German insert describing the main features.
Export price list in Euros, on a cip basis.
If you do not hear anything within two to three weeks, we suggest you follow up by phone if you have a German speaker or by fax/e-mail. It is
worth doing so, as this will show a serious interest in doing business. If you get a positive response, an early visit to Germany could be a
worthwhile next step.
It may also be worth visiting or exhibiting at a German trade fair in the sector you cover. The trade association for this sector or the International Sectors Groups of UK Trade & Investment in Glasgow (tel. 0141 228 3671)
will be able to give details of whether support may be available through a UK sponsored joint venture at the fair.
Background Information on Germany Useful background information on Germany is available at
www.uktradeinvest.gov.uk. This UK Trade & Investment web site holds information for exporters to all markets and is a useful point of reference for
general and sector information on each country.

Dear Mr Parry-Billings
OVERSEAS MARKET INTRODUCTION SERVICE FOR GERMANY WORKPLAN FOR ORDER REFERENCE NUMBER: GER0905
Thank you for your order.
Following your discussion with Annette Klerks, we have drafted a workplan to meet your requirements. Annette will coordinate the research in Germany.
Workplan For Germany "Central" (Düsseldorf) OMIS Service Level £1700
Total Cost £1700 1. First Activity
For your marketing campaign at the forthcoming GDS in March 2007, we will provide:
a validated list with contact details of up to 100 relevant footwear
retailers plus contact details of agents at the top-end of the market. The emphasis will be on updating the contact’s database and not on additional market information. We will focus on the larger footwear
chains plus top-end retailers and agents in the fashion centers of Berlin, Munich, Düsseldorf, Cologne and Stuttgart.
British Footwear Association - 96 -
British Consulate-General, Düsseldorf
2. Methodology
The trade team in Düsseldorf will prepare the report using information obtained on a selective basis from local business contacts, local databases, trade publications, fair catalogues, trade associations and the internet.
To clarify what we mean by validated list: we will telephone and check the
address, telephone, fax and website details of each company and provide the name of a suitable contact. We confirm that the company does deal in the type of product or service under offer and that they are interested in
principle in receiving offers in that sector. In Germany, companies rarely express firm interest in a product or service over the telephone. Of course,
if a contact did ask for more information or expressed firm interest during the validation process, this is noted against the entry under ‘Comment’ in the report.
3. In Market Help
Counselling/mentoring by trade staff in Düsseldorf at the forthcoming GDS fair in March 2007.
4. Delivery Deadline
The expected delivery of the First Activity is: 24 January 2007
We have given you one week to accept the workplan but the sooner you start the acceptance process the sooner we can commence research. If the deadline for acceptance is missed, I am afraid we will have to revise the
delivery date quoted above.
Options – if you: ● are content with the proposed service, please click "Accept
Workplan" on your screen.
● wish to amend the workplan, please proceed as follows: a) Minor Amendments: click on “Accept Workplan” and then use the “Add
Comment” function in the margin.
b) Significant Amendments: click on “Request Changes to the Workplan”.
British Footwear Association - 97 -

Once we reach a final agreement on the workplan and you have clicked the "Accept Workplan" button on your screen, the workplan and order may no
longer be edited. Your Business Link will contact you for payment once you have approved the service. The First Activity in the workplan cannot be delivered until payment has been received.
Please do not hesitate to contact me or Annette (0049 211 9448 209) if you
have any questions about the workplan or the online service. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

A PROFESSIONAL APPROACH Sven Riemann offers tips for greeting and meeting your German business partner
Even though the European Union and its constituent parts have been developing
together over the last 30 years, there are still many cultural differences between
the UK and Germany. British companies exporting to Germany may have already
experienced these differences. It is worthwhile exploring these in more detail.
The British visualisation of the German stereotype typically involves a Bavarian
dancing in Lederhosen and holding a beer. This is the fun side. However, in
business the Germans have a reputation for being thorough and correct. Therefore,
when doing business in Germany, it is necessary to adapt to this.
When first contacting a representative of a German company, you will need to
address him with his correct title. For example, as academic titles are used in
Germany as a matter of course, it is important to know if they have a doctor title.
In Germany, even lower-level employees sometimes address each other with their
titles and last names when talking between themselves. This rule is only broken
when an older or more experienced colleague suggests they call each other by their
first names. The German language reinforces this formality: the "Sie" form is the
official "you", while "Du" (which also means "you") is only for family and close
friends. This may seem quite strange to a British person but the use of Mr and Mrs
was standard in Britain until relatively recently. Since the 1970s the trend has
moved to using first names and slowly, with these British and American influences,
certain companies in Germany are changing to using a more informal approach.
When starting a conversation with a German business partner, clear, direct
argumentation and concise presentation is important. Professional and formal
behaviour is vital. What is being said will be taken seriously, promises made are
held and small talk is withheld! Be careful when using humour as German and
British sensibilities are very different in this respect. Avoid black humour and
indirect communication which can be confusing and, at worst, offensive.
Furthermore, you might find that during conversation, your partner is very direct in
expressing his views and opinions. This attribute can seem rude to a British
person, who is more used to a " hidden language ". For example, if you are trying
to arrange a meeting with your German partner and he has no interest, he will
inform you directly rather than using English, indirect style, such as "Well, in the
future, I might be interested".
A meeting with your potential business partner is your ideal goal and is worth
thorough preparation, especially as the Germans have a reputation for being well
prepared and being up to speed. As when arranging meetings with business people
of any nationality, it is a good idea, and conveys a professional approach, if you
confirm the meeting with a letter/fax including time and date, a list of attendees
(with their positions) and an agenda. This shows good business manners and
demonstrates credibility. Be punctual for the meeting and if you are delayed - even
by as little as five minutes - telephone to let them know.
British Footwear Association - 99 -
British Consulate-General, Düsseldorf
At the first point of contact, a "Guten Tag" greeting, together with your name and a
firm handshake, shows that you mean business. Once you have arrived in the
meeting room, try to keep the chat short. As a German would say, "If I were
interested in the weather, I would talk to a meteorologist". Aim to keep to the
agenda as much as possible. You might find that if the partner is from the former East Germany, his English is not so good. In such a case, you might need a
German speaker to support you. Germans in general like to speak foreign
languages and therefore your partner’s English might be good enough to conduct
the meeting in English - but do not assume so!
During the meeting you will find that Germans are impressed with quality,
reputability and reliability. The formality and respectable distance to you is usual
and should not be taken the wrong way. Unlike in, say, southern Europe, business
and pleasure in Germany are often separated.
Once finished, the meeting can be ended with "Auf Wiedersehen" and again a
strong handshake. At this point, it makes a good impression to send them a
letter/fax summarising what you have discussed and what further points need to be
pursued. These action points will probably form the basis for long-term plans,
which are viewed as crucial by managers in Germany.
All this may seem a large amount of work in comparison with that required for
recruiting potential British customers. However, you will find that the Germans,
once they have begun business with you, will be keen to develop the relationship
and will remain loyal. When describing business culture, one inevitably falls into
the trap of stereotyping - so one might describe the attitude to business adopted by
Germans in larger cities such as Munich and Frankfurt as being "Anglo-Saxon".
However, in the business arena, paying attention to cultural diversities and
behaving appropriately could make the difference between a deal or no deal. As
the old adage goes: it is better to be safe than sorry!

General Information on the German Footwear Market
Size of the Market and Imports Supply
The market volume of footwear in 2004 was estimated to be in the region of € 10.1 billion (at retail prices). The imports of footwear to Germany are
characterised by a strong trend towards price deflation. While the number of pairs imported in 2005 rose by 12.6% to 412 million pairs, the total value of all imports only rose by 3.4% to € 3.9 billion. This trend started in 2002
and has not yet come to an end. Accordingly, the retail prices for shoes fell in 2005 by 1.3%.
One reason for this deflation is the growing importance of footwear suppliers from Asia, in particular from China and Vietnam.
The 10 biggest suppliers of footwear to Germany in 2005 were:
1. China 225 Mio Pairs +93.9% 2. Vietnam 67 Mio Pairs - 19.1%
3. Italy 38 Mio Pairs - 18.3% 4. Netherlands 14 Mio Pairs + 7.7%
5. India 11 Mio Pairs - 2.7% 6. Rumania 11 Mio Pairs +19.2% 9. Indonesia 9 Mio Pairs - 6.6%
10. Austria 7 Mio Pairs -28.5%
Imports from the UK amount to 2.1 million pairs representing only 0.4% of the total footwear imports. In general, imports from the UK to Germany are
at a relatively high price point with the average price per pair of € 26.10 (Jan-June 2005). In contrast, the average import price of shoes from other EU countries during this period was € 15.46 and from Asian countries only
€ 5.38. These figures indicate that British footwear has only achieved significant market share in particular niche areas of the market such as
traditional mens shoes, young fashion brands and designer shoes. Ladies shoes take the biggest share of the market, followed by mens/boys,
childrens sports and slippers.

The Footwear Retail Trade
In 1996, there were some 8,353 specialised footwear retailers in Germany. In 2003, only 6,350 were left. The German footwear trade is currently undergoing a period of structural changes. In particular smaller independent
specialised footwear retailers are under pressure and it is estimated that their number has gone down by about 10% over the last four years.
The majority of independent specialist footwear retailers are members of one of the footwear purchasing rings such as Ariston-Nordwest Ring,
Garant, Rexor, Sabu or GEB Schuhgroßeinkaufsbund. The members of the purchasing rings still account for about 40% of market share. Due to the
purchasing conditions offered by the rings, their members are able to compete against retail chains.
Specialist footwear chains like Deichmann, Reno, Bahner Group and Görtz hold about 30% of the market. In general chains have recently performed
slightly better than the independent retailers, however, their turnover has also declined.
Non-specialist retailers like fashion boutiques, department stores or discount retailers (ALDI, Tchibo) have recently increased their market share
to 10%.

These trends are also reflected in the development of the share of price ranges of footwear. The middle market brands in particular have lost out
against the premium brands i.e. the price level designers such as BOSS and the so-called pseudo-discount price level of chains like DEICHMANN. The market share of the luxury brands or the discount retailers like ALDI
remained stable.

Selling through agents and distributors
Successful suppliers need good representation in the German market and need to be prepared to develop the market in close co-operation with their German distributor or agent.
Commission agents (footwear agents and fashion agents) continue to play a
significant role in the market - particularly at the high-end and luxury end of the market mostly targeting independent retailers but also selling to key accounts. Companies seeking to appoint German agents should be aware of
the terms and conditions of European Agency Law. Most of these agents can be found in the fashion centres of Germany (Düsseldorf, Munich, Hamburg
and Berlin).
