Contrary to renewed calls to allow Samoans residing over-seas to vote in General Elec-tions, government under no

circumstance is stopping any Samoan el-igible to vote to be part of the democratic election process, says Prime Minister Tui-laepa Lupesoliai Sailele Malielegaoi.

Opening the electoral rolls for overseas Samoans to cast their bal-lots as absentee voters during general elections has resurfaced again

with Former Prime Minister and Ex-Opposition Leader Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Efi urging Government to amend the electoral laws to this effect.

But the Prime Minister is baffled with the narrow minded thinking by the former PM.

“Lest Tupua forgets, this has been a long standing issue which has been duly addressed by Parliament with amendments to the Electoral Act based on recommendations from Commission of Inquiries estab-lished law after every General Elections,” responded the Prime Min-ister.

“And among those amendments ensures the right for all Samoan eligible to vote to exercise that right without restrains,” said Tuilaepa.

“One mandate approved by Parliament is for all Samoans to satisfy the three year residency requirement to be eligible to vote or run as an election candidate.

understanding, perseverance and courage to our forefathers to believe that Samoa could govern her own affairs. Today marks anoth-er milestone of our independence and we remember and acknowledge with pride and heartfelt thanks the toil and contributions of our forefathers and leaders who championed our Independence and have led our Govern-ment and people from the beginning up to this day.

As the first, and oldest State among the independent nations in the Pacific, our coun-try has grown in terms of our population and economic development. A clear direction has been set for the future through sustainable de-velopment modalities, plans and priorities of government to provide for the country now, and the generations to come. The knowledge and wisdom of our people have allowed them to confidently devise laws and policies, appro-priate resources, and lead the implementation of developments in all sectors of the econo-my. These have required the close partnership between government Ministries and Corpo-rations and our people, especially the sup-port of our village chiefs and orators, church leaders, women committees, non-government organisations, private sector, and the business community. Psalms 91vividly reminds us that ‘you will not fear any danger by night or an arrow during the day; You will not be afraid of the diseases that come in the dark or sickness that strikes at noon’. ‘At your side, thousands of people may die, or even ten thousand right beside you, but you will not be hurt”. Rumours that some of the Samoan passengers who arrived last Friday from Auckland on the re-patriation flight are suspected to have COVID-19 symptoms, have been labelled as “irresponsible and reckless,” by Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi.

Denouncing the rumours during his Taimi ole Palemia weekly television program with TV1 last night, Tuilaepa reassured that country that he was informed late yesterday that the said rumours are lies created to cause unnecessary panic.

“There will always be people resorting to deceit and lies to defame and discredit the Government and the tarnish the work by dedicated and profes-sional public servants,” elaborated Tuilaepa. “It’s natural for these devious minds to undermine any and all of Government’s positive achievements to suit their ulterior motives

“And to clear any doubts I have been informed by the Health CEO that initial tests after the pas-sengers arrived have cleared all of the returning residents of any suspected symptoms,” he contin-ued. All the necessary precautions which include daily medical check-ups for the returning residents are continuing until the 14 quarantine mandate is satisfied.”

He added that the Ministry of Health facilitat-ed by the National Emergency Operation Center, (N.E.O.C.) continues to remain on the frontline protecting Samoa’s borders from COVID 19.

“We are as ready as we can be,” reassured Tu-ilaepa. “Protecting all residents from the virus re-mains paramount to Government.”

On a separate note, the Prime Minister also ac-knowledges the spiritual support from prayers by all churches and denominations which he says is

the divine intervention that continues to protect Sa-moa from COVID 19.

On the global front, the Prime Minister noted that latest reports shows that while the pandemic appears to be slowing down, it is no excuse for Government to relax.

“There remains the chance for the virus to reach Samoa and that is the last thing we want,”

he said noting that as of yesterday and based on NEOC reports, COVID 19 has claimed close to 380 thousand lives with the United States accounting for over 100-thousand fatalities or one third of the lives lost.

While there are fatalities in Australia (103 as of yesterday) and New Zealand (22 as of yesterday), the report noted the high recovery cases in both countries with no seriously critical case in New Zealand and only 3 in Australia.

“We continue to monitor the developments on

a daily basis and we will continue to change our State of Emergency Orders as Government sees fit. These decisions are made all in the best interest of protecting the country from COVID-19,” he said.

In his ending remarks, he reiterated earlier calls by Health and NEOC officials not to be easily con-vinced with the unofficial reports and fake news littering the viral media and to seek the factual in-formation circulated and posted on the Ministry of Health and Government of Samoa’s website and official government outlets.

The VAGST tax is the product of the Off-Shore Banking (principal) Act initiated by then Prime Minister, the late Vaai Kolone and his Deputy PM Tupua Tamasese Efi and approved into law by Par-liament.

“It’s all in the Hansard, (Legislature’s Offi-cial Records),” clarifies Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi.

tion to families and relatives here,” said Tuilaepa. “And the truth of the matter is our families here are reaping the fruits of their overseas

relatives’ hard labour from their private remittances and we acknowledge their valuable contri-bution..

“Remitttances is the life line for families and used for their faalavelaves, to build new homes, buy cars, pay for their day to day necessities and even pay for their children’s education.

“And government is more than appreciative of that fact.“For Tui Atua to play with the emotions of voters is a conniving ploy, one of his well known

political tactic. “For the record,” concluded the Prime Minister. “Your government is not restraining any

On Friday 29 May 2020, a repatriation flight arranged by the Government of Samoa in collaboration with the Government of New Zealand and Air New Zealand arrived at the Faleolo In-ternational Airport bringing more than one-hundred Samoan nationals and residents from Auckland, New Zealand.

Disaster Advisory Committee - Response Agencies present at the Airport to facilitate the process for incoming passen-gers included the Ministry of Health (MOH), Ministry of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (MPMC), Ministry for Customs and Revenue (MCR), Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAF), Samoa Airport Authority (SAA), Ministry of Police (MOP), Sa-

moa Fire and Emergency Authority (SFESA) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT); coordinated by the Na-tional Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC).
