3Foreword l

A school trip to Singapore promises to be fun, exciting as well as truly educational.

Singapore, a country of diverse cultures and fascinating modernity, has been a choice destination for overseas school trips. Visiting students are able to experience the public school teaching system as well as immerse themselves in interactive environments with their local and international counterparts. In addition, Singapore’s leisure-educational products are offered by quality providers in one of the safest destinations in the world.

Whether it’s a three-day or two-week programme, students can learn about Singapore’s history and cultural heritage, uncover new frontiers in science and technology, explore nature from cultivating plants to getting up close with animals in the zoo, or build leadership and teambuilding skills through outdoor adventure camps. These trips can also be enhanced with enrichment learning programmes, which provide students with opportunities for experiential learning.

Assembled with the educator and travel channels in mind, this publication will serve as a guide to offer the most memorable learning experiences for school groups.

Join us to discover the different facets of Singapore where learning becomes truly alive and the experience uniquely enriching!

Uniquely Singapore Educational ExperienceWhy choose Singapore to be the destination for your overseas school trip?

By choosing Singapore, you have the opportunity to be plugged into a dynamic education system that promotes excellence and at the same time, be part of a progressive, cosmopolitan community. In Singapore, we offer:

A hub for educational excellence.

A world-class public school system.

A multi-cultural nation with a high quality of life.

A vibrant and dynamic city lifestyle.

A clean, safe and convenient environment.

A central destination that is well-connected with the region.

From taking part in ethnic festivals to exploring all that the city has to offer, Singapore Education provides learning opportunities that go beyond academic achievements and offers a Uniquely Singapore educational experience.

Introduction to Singapore EducationSingapore has established itself fi rmly as the region’s leading centre for learning through its continual focus on quality education. The Ministry of Education (MOE) spent SGD 6.96 billion in 2006 to improve schools and universities and provide students with a balanced and well-rounded curriculum so they can learn beyond the classroom and develop holistically.

Many world-renowned universities and centres of education and research, such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the leading French university INSEAD and the Technical University of Munich have branches here.

In 2006, the Bureau of East Asian and Pacifi c Affairs reported that the literacy rate in Singapore had reached 94.6 percent. It also rated the country as having the highest scientifi c and mathematical literacy in the world. Local students continuously perform well at international competitions, frequently topping such events as the International Olympiads for Science and Mathematics.

English is the main language of instruction, but students are required to study a second or third language to retain their cultural identity and remain versatile. This has resulted in Singapore having some of the most sought-after skilled professionals in the region.

Pre-Primary and Primary EducationIt is never too early to start the learning process. In Singapore, numerous educational organisations have established certifi ed pre-primary courses designed to stimulate young minds and instil a passion for learning at an early age.

Singapore Education has adopted a differentiated learning approach where students are given attention that enhances their individual capabilities. Children are taught according to their individual ability levels with a focus on improving personal strengths. This helps students develop to their fullest potential.

Secondary EducationSingapore aims to develop students in all aspects of life. At the secondary education level, strong emphasis is placed upon Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs) where students are given many opportunities to participate in sports, the arts and cultural activities. This is to ensure that students develop balanced perspectives as they grow academically, physically and socially.

There are a variety of education streams and programmes available in secondary schools to cater to students of various abilities and interests. The Singapore Education System offers the Normal (Academic), Normal (Technical), Express and Special streams to enable students to customise their learning needs. There are also special elective courses and schools to cater to students with talents in the fi elds of art, music, language and sports.

Top local institutions also provide an Integrated Programme with a full six-year curriculum geared towards the GCE ‘A’ Level (General Certifi cate of Education Advanced Level) or International Baccalaureate.

Tertiary EducationThe quality of tertiary education in Singapore is outstanding. Three internationally recognised universities — National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and Singapore Management University (SMU)— provide excellent courses at the graduate and post-graduate levels.

Specialised institutions are also available for students with specifi c learning interests. Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) and LASALLE College of the Arts are among the recognised art colleges that offer courses in fashion, design, performing arts and fi ne arts. Private institutions of higher learning, such as the Singapore Institute of Management (SIM), offer recognised business and fi nance degrees and certifi cation in specialised courses. Five established polytechnics offer a practical approach towards learning and produce trained professionals ready for immediate entry into the workforce. Top graduates also frequently secure scholarships and places in other higher learning courses.

Quality of Instruction Both the private and public sectors uphold high standards in teaching. Teachers in the public sector are required to obtain National Institute of Education (NIE) certifi cation and are continually encouraged to upgrade their skills. By 2010, MOE will deploy 3,000 more teachers into the system.

Schools continually refi ne their curricula to ensure that teaching content and styles are kept relevant. Computers, multimedia resources and other progressive teaching aids are employed to further enhance learning experiences. Class sizes are kept small so each student can be given more attention, thus building a stronger student-teacher relationship.

Page 11: Overseas School Trips

InfrastructureAs a leading technology hub in Southeast Asia, Singapore offers access to state-of-the-art Information Technology (IT) and multimedia facilities in the classroom. Almost all institutions provide students with broadband Internet access. In October 2006, the government introduced the Wireless@SG programme to extend broadband access to public places. That same year, MOE invested SGD 364 million for the development and improvement of post-secondary educational institutions in the country.

Singapore is also proudly one of the safest and most accommodating environments in the region. It was ranked second in the personal safety category by the Mercer Human Resources Consulting (2006) survey of 215 cities worldwide.

Embracing Singapore Education Through Overseas School TripsSingapore’s openness and cosmopolitan outlook make it easy for visiting overseas school groups to adjust here. Students will be able to experience the rich diversity of cultures and take advantage of the different learning programmes available.

Affordable accommodation, transport and amenities make visiting and studying in Singapore highly attractive. Many educational institutions and organisations also provide special services such as airport transfers, visa registration and accommodation to assist students coming from abroad. Courses can be customised for school and group trips.

Getting To Know SingaporeFast Facts About SingaporeCountry : Singapore

Area : 699 sq km

Population : 4.59 million (as of July 2008)

Offi cial Languages : English, Mandarin, Malay and Tamil

National Flower : Vanda Miss Joaquim (Orchid)

Time Zone : GMT/UTC +8 (Standard Time)

Did You Know? Singapore is made up of not just one island but a main island with 63 surrounding islets.

The Bukit Timah Nature Reserve in Singapore contains more species of trees than the entire North American continent.

The Fountain of Wealth, the “World’s Largest Fountain”, is located in Singapore at Suntec City. This title was awarded by the Guinness Book of World Records in 1998.

Despite Singapore’s small size (699 sq km), it has 355 schools, from government to government-aided, autonomous and independent institutions, translating to an average of two schools per sq km.

Singapore has more than 3,000 kilometres of roads. Stretched end to end, they can cover the distance fromSingapore to Hong Kong.

TipsClimate

Singapore has a warm and humid climate all year-round, with temperatures ranging from 23 to 33 degrees celsius. Sunshine is the norm, with occasional rain, especially during the year-end monsoon periods. The island is wettest from November to January and driest from May to July. Rainstorms are usually short and intense.

Film, Theatre and Music

Singapore has a vibrant and creative entertainment scene. There are approximately 150 cinemas that screen the most recent movies and art fi lms from all over the world.

The country is also well on its way to becoming a global arts city. Major arts events are showcased, such as the Singapore Arts Festival and Singapore Music Festival, in partnership with several private institutions. Musical performances are held throughout the year, from orchestral performances to world musical festivals. Free concerts are often held at the Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay, among other locations around Singapore.

Local theatres such as The Necessary Stage and The Singapore Repertory Theatre (SRT) put on regular productions throughout the year. The Little Company, part of SRT, is a professional theatre group that produces quality plays for children aged 2 to 12 years old.

Straits Times, Singapore’s daily newspaper, www.sistic.com.sg and www.ticketcharge.com.sg provide an entertainment calendar.

Libraries

In 2005, the National Library Board (NLB) initiated the Library 2010 plan “to bring the world’s knowledge to Singapore to create a positive social and economic impact”. It is aimed at creating collaborative spaces and environments that build social capital and deliver knowledge dividends to Singapore. It goes beyond expanding the learning capacity of the nation; it provides support for life-long learning among Singaporeans.

The National Library aims to be a one-stop centre for Asian collections and materials. It houses a collection of over 500,000 titles on Singapore, Southeast Asia and Asia at the Lee Kong Chian Reference Library.

Visit the library@esplanade to gain access to Singapore’s fi rst dedicated library for the performing arts. It is located at the Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay, making it one of the few libraries in the world to be located within a performing arts complex. It has an attached café where visitors can sit down for a quiet read while enjoying a cuppa.

Medical Facilities

Singapore ranks high in terms of healthcare and according to PERC (Political and Economic Risk Consultancy), it has the best medical infrastructure. Private clinics and government polyclinics across the island provide general consultation services and treatments. Large hospitals have specialist clinics and 24-hour Accident and Emergency Rooms for serious injuries and medical conditions. Eight of the world’s top 10 pharmaceutical companies are located in Singapore.

Moving forward, Singapore is also fast becoming a regional hub for bioscience research, especially in stem cells. Its greatest challenge is to see the fruition of growing the biomedical industry to SGD 25 billion by 2015.

Money and Costs

The local currency is denominated in SGD (Singapore Dollars).

A 7% Goods and Services Tax (GST) is imposed on all purchases. Some purchases qualify for a GST refund, so please check with retailers when you go shopping. Tipping is not usually expected in Singapore as many hotels and restaurants add on a 10% service charge.

Major credit cards are generally accepted by most commercial establishments. These include American Express, Diners Club, JCB, MasterCard and Visa.

Most banks handle traveller’s cheques and provide foreign currency exchange services. Passports are required when encashing traveller’s cheques. A nominal commission may be charged. Apart from banks and hotels, you may change money at outlets which display the sign “Licensed Money Changer” or “Authorised Money Changer”. Money changers can be found in most major shopping areas.

Banks are usually open Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 3.00pm, and Saturday, 9.30am to 11.00am / 1.00pm. Some banks offer late-night banking and have extended hours on Saturday and Sunday. It is best to check with individual banks on their operating hours.

Phone and Internet

Public payphones are located at most shopping malls and public places, and are operated by credit card or stored-value phonecards which can be purchased from post offi ces, phonecard agents and 7-Eleven (24-hour) stores. Local calls from public payphones cost 10 cents per three-minute block. International Calling Cards are also available at all post offi ces, 7-Eleven stores and other retail outlets.

Internet cafés can be found around Singapore. Usage costs range from SGD 3.00 to 5.00 an hour. Tech-savvy visitors can look forward to broadband connection points in hotel rooms and other places throughout the island. Wireless hotspots (places where wireless Internet connections are available) are also located at various establishments.

Post

Singapore Post (SingPost) has more than 60 branches, over 40 authorised agencies and over 800 stamp vendors throughout Singapore. SingPost’s retail counters serve as one-stop centres for postal, telecommunication and agency services. Most outlets are open Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5.00pm and until 1.00pm on Saturday.

SingPost has a wide network of Self-service Automated Machines (SAMs) and XPost located at post offi ces, supermarkets, shopping complexes and major MRT stations. The 24-hour SAMs offer postal services, including the purchase of postage labels, payment of bills and fi nes, renewal of licences and even the top-up of Hi! Cards (mobile phone pre-paid cards).

Letters to local addresses cost 26 cents for the fi rst 20g and aerogrammes of at last 100g to all parts of the world cost from 50 cents.

Shopping

Singapore is a shopper’s paradise. Besides the main shopping area along Orchard Road, visitors will be able to fi nd stores, malls and districts that cater to a specialised market.

Book lovers will appreciate Borders and Kinokuniya – two major bookstores along Orchard Road stocked with books covering almost every subject and in different languages. Affordable school supplies can also be found at the Popular chain of bookstores located across Singapore.

Cameras, computers and gadgets galore can be found at Funan Digitalife Mall and Sim Lim Square. These two malls are full of small and large stores that sell electronic and computer-related products.

Cultural items can be found in the small shops that line the streets of Chinatown, Kampong Gelam and Little India. These shops are ideal for fi nding mementos and souvenirs to remember the many interesting sights of Singapore.

Singaporeans

“We, the citizens of Singapore,

pledge ourselves as one united people,

regardless of race, language or religion...”

So begins the Singapore National Pledge. This commitment to multicultural and multiracial harmony is crucial given Singapore’s diverse population mix: 77 percent of Singapore is made up of Chinese, 14 percent are Malay, 8 percent are Indian and the remaining population comprises Eurasians and other ethnic groups.

Although each race retains its own customs, traditions and festivals, the harmonious interaction amongst people from different cultural backgrounds has led to the evolution of a shared Singapore identity.

Most locals are bilingual and speak English as well as their mother tongue, which is usually Mandarin, Malay or Tamil, depending on the race of the individual.

Toiletries and Medication

You should be able to buy everything you need in Singapore. Most shopping malls stock a wide array of toiletries and other personal items. You can also fi ll prescriptions and purchase common medicines over the counter at most pharmacies.

Transport

With an extensive and inexpensive public transport network available, getting around in Singapore is easy and affordable. You can choose between the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) train system and the convenient bus services that span the island or hail one of the many taxis along the roads that charge by the metre.

At all MRT stations, visitors can buy an EZlink card, which is a stored value card that can be used on both trains and buses.

There are many metred taxis on the road which can be fl agged down on the street or found along taxi stands outside shopping centres, major hotels and most MRT stations. Taxi companies also provide advanced phone-booking services at affordable fees.

What to Wear

Visitors expecting to spend a signifi cant amount of time outdoors are advised to wear light, comfortable clothes and to use sunscreen, insect repellent and sunglasses. An umbrella will also come in handy in the event of unexpected showers. A light pullover to wear in air-conditioned buildings and vehicles is also a good idea.

Food and Affordable Dining EstablishmentsRight in the heart of Asia and at the crossroads of the world, Singapore offers a diverse array of tastes and entertainment experiences for its visitors – you will never go bored or hungry in Singapore for long!

Affordable Dining

Singapore is one of the most affordable places in the world when it comes to dining. Local fare found at hawker centres, food courts and kopitiams (local coffee shops) are very reasonably priced. The vast array of food options — from fried noodles to sushi, wood-fi red pizzas to gourmet burgers — ensures that there is something to suit every taste.

Visitors are also in for a special treat if they come during one of the many different cultural festivals such as Chinese New Year, Hari Raya and Deepavali. They can join in the festivals and sample traditional foods and snacks prepared by each ethnic group for their celebrations.

Local Food

Chinese Cuisine

The wide variety of Chinese cuisine stems from the diversity of the early Chinese immigrants. Each different dialect group brought with them their own traditional recipes from China. These have since been adapted to match the local palate, but each still maintains a distinct and individual fl avour. Rice is still the main staple for most Singaporean Chinese, although noodles are very popular as well.

Hainanese Chicken RiceThis dish features tender chicken served with fl avoured rice, cucumber slices and soup. Most hawker stalls offer a choice between steamed or roasted chicken.

Hor FunHor fun is a noodle dish of fl at white noodles in a thick gravy, served with vegetables and either chicken, beef or prawns.

Ice KachangThis popular dessert consists of red beans, creamed corn and colourful jelly cubes, topped with a mound of shaved ice and drenched in coloured syrups and evaporated milk.

Page 24: Overseas School Trips

22 l Uniquely Singapore Educational Experience

Malay Cuisine

Coconut milk is a popular ingredient in Malay cuisine due to its easy availability here. Malay dishes are often accompanied by a spicy chilli and shrimp paste called sambal belacan. Rice is a defi nite staple of a Malay meal, but do not expect to fi nd any pork as Islam forbids the consumption of pork.

Nasi LemakThis Malay set meal contains rice and a choice of meat or vegetables. It is traditionally served wrapped in banana leaves.

SatayMeat, usually beef, chicken or mutton, is marinated in different spices and charcoal-grilled on little wooden skewers. It is best enjoyed with a peanut-based dipping sauce that can also be used for the accompanying ketupat (rice dumplings), onion and cucumber slices.

Indian Cuisine

Indian cuisine probably stands out for its rich colour, spicy aroma and intense fl avour. Curry is synonymous with Indian food and sometimes the hotter the dish, the better the locals prefer it. Both North and South Indian cuisine can be found in Singapore, but establishments serving the southern variety are more common.

Roti PrataThis thin, fried dough pancake is served with a small plate of hot curry. Those with a sweet tooth can try adding a sprinkle of sugar. There are also many modern variations such as Tissue Prata, Cheese Prata, and even Ice Cream Prata.

Nasi BriyaniThis is a colourful, aromatic dish of basmati rice cooked with spices and herbs and garnished with raisins, fried onions or cashew nuts. It is accompanied with roasted or braised chicken, mutton or fi sh and a side dish of carrot and cucumber slices seasoned with vinegar.

Hawker Centres and Coffee Shops

Coffee shops are commonly found on the ground fl oor of shophouses or apartment blocks. Each contains between six to ten food stalls and one drink stall. Food prices typically range from SGD 2.00 to 4.00 for a plate of food and SGD 1.00 to 1.50 for a drink.

Hawker centres are big food centres which have many different food stalls. Food prices are similar to coffee shops. Hawker centres are dotted all over the island and are usually found in neighbourhood town centres.

Most Singaporeans have their personal favourite hawker centres, food courts and stalls – some popular picks are Bugis Street, Lau Pa Sat, Chinatown Food Street and Maxwell Food Centre. However, you will fi nd many hidden gems in the heartlands which are worth exploring.

Page 25: Overseas School Trips

23Uniquely Singapore Educational Experience l

Food Courts

If the Singapore heat deters you from an outdoor dining experience, a food court is the next best alternative. These are air-conditioned hawker centres, usually within a shopping mall, typically offering local favourites as well as international food in a comfortable, modern indoor setting. As with hawker centres, it is best to fi nd a seat before you order your food. Food prices typically range from SGD 3.00 to 5.00 for a plate of food and SGD 1.00 to 2.00 for a drink.

Popular food courts in the city include Bugis Junction, Clarke Quay, Takashimaya Food Village, China Square Food Centre, Food Republic, Banquet (Halal) and Kopitiam.

Snack Stalls

Snacks and small tidbits are very popular in Singapore. Most shopping malls have a level dedicated to food and snacks. Common snack foods include curry puffs, spring rolls, savoury buns, kaya (coconut and egg jam) toast and fi lled pancakes. Most bakeries sell a mix of local and Western treats.

Variety of Cuisines

If you are adventurous and do not mind spending a little more, check out the range of international cuisines available in Singapore. These include Italian, Korean, Thai, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Chinese and much more!

Accommodation OptionsA wide range of accommodation options is available to suit individual and visiting overseas school groups’ lodging needs.

Hotels with good services and facilities are aplenty within the Central Business District and popular shopping areas, while most budget hotels and backpackers’ lodges have listings on the Internet. Students who wish to stay in Singapore for a slightly longer period may opt for serviced apartments as they provide the comfort of a home and take care of all housekeeping needs. In addition, private apartments, houses or rooms can also be rented and students can check them out in the classifi ed sections of local newspapers. Students on an exchange programme may also choose to stay in a selection of private hostels, boarding schools, on-campus hostels or accredited homestays. A copy of the Student Accommodation Directory can be requested from the Singapore Tourism Board offi ce.

Types of Accommodation

Hotels

For those who do not mind spending a little more, there is a wide variety of hotels to suit every budget. Check out the “Where to Stay” section at www.visitsingapore.com for a detailed listing.

Boarding Schools / Hostels / Halls of Residence / Dormitories

Students also have the option of staying in privately operated hostels that provide low cost accommodation. Most hostels offer single or shared rooms that offer students the chance to socalise and interact with one another.

Dormitory-style lodging is also available for Overseas School Trip groups. Students will have to share a room, typically with four to eight students per dormitory.

From basic board to a full range of student support services, hostels can vary greatly in the range of services they provide. Standard options available include the provision of meals, laundry and telephone services. Higher end hostels also provide access to computers and televisions. Some hostels even have their own sports and recreational facilities. For younger students, selected hostels provide guardians and tutors to help them with their studies after school hours.

Some institutions provide on-site accommodation such as Halls of Residence at the National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and boarding school lodging at private schools such as Raffl es Institution.

Homestays

Some households in Singapore open up their homes and offer full boarding to international students. The Homestay programme seeks to provide a conducive environment where the student gets to enjoy a homely environment and receive attentive care and emotional support from the guardians in the absence of his/her parents. The cost for Homestay ranges from SGD 1,000.00 to 1,600.00 per month.

Booking AccommodationAccommodation is easily available in Singapore, but reservations should be made at least one month in advance to get the accommodation of your choice. For larger groups, or those who may wish for an extended stay, it is suggested that they make bookings at least two months in advance to confi rm the availability of accommodation.

Booking procedures vary between accommodation providers, but friendly guest relations or administrative staff are easily contactable by phone or email, and will be able to help out. Here are a few simple steps for a start: Develop a list of accommodation providers from a reliable source.

Determine the specifi c requirements that your students need.

Contact the various accommodation providers to see if they meet your requirements.

Confi rm the availability of accommodation facilities during the time period of your Overseas School Trip.

Confi rm your group’s arrival / departure dates and times with the accommodation provider.

Prepare copies of your students’ passports, travel documents and home contact details. Many accommodation providers will require these upon arrival.

Before students move into a boarding school, hostel, hall of residence or dormitory, they should decide on the level of comfort they require and prepare a list of questions to ask as a checklist. Here are some questions to get them started:

Questions to Ask When Seeking Accommodation What type of accommodation do students need?

What is the registration / booking procedure?

What is the cancellation policy, if any?

Is there a minimum period of stay required?

Can students move in before they start their course?

Can Overseas School Trip groups extend their stay?

Can students share a room with a friend or are all rooms assigned at random?

What is provided and what is not?

Are cooking facilities included?

Who do students go to if they have any questions?

National Museum of SingaporeAt more than 100 years old, the National Museum of Singapore is Singapore’s oldest museum with the youngest and most innovative soul. Designed to be the people’s museum, the National Museum of Singapore prides itself on introducing cutting-edge and varied ways of presenting history to redefi ne the conventional museum experience.

More than just a space for exhibitions and artefacts, the Museum also distinguishes itself through its challenging and vibrant festivals and events, unleashing new creative possibilities in culture and heritage. This programming will be supported by a wide range of facilities and services including food & beverage, retail and a Gallery Theatre.

Unlike conventional history museums, the National Museum showcases the history of Singapore from the 14th century to the present as a multitude of stories using narrative approaches inspired by contemporary fi lm, installation and theatre. It also employs state-of-the-art modes of presentation.

Galleries: Singapore History Gallery (2,800 square metres) Singapore Living Galleries (1,395 square metres) Changing Exhibitions Galleries (1,196 square metres)

Singapore History GalleryThe Singapore History Gallery explores 700 years of Singapore’s history, from the 14th century to the present day. The 2,800 square metre Gallery uses a combination of multimedia and artefacts to tell the history of Singapore.

As visitors enter the gallery through the Glass Rotunda, dramatic music sets the atmosphere and accompanies scenes of Singapore projected on the 360° inner wall of the Rotunda. A long pathway spirals down into the depths of the gallery where history begins.

Unlike traditional history museums, the National Museum has adopted a multi-layered story-telling approach. It juxtaposes popular history and anecdotal history in two paths that visitors can choose to follow. The events path traces the major events and characters that were part of Singapore’s history, while the personal path tells the stories through the eyes of the man on the street.

At each step of the way, visitors are guided by a personal audio visual device, The Companion, specially developed for the Singapore History Gallery. The Companion will play guide and narrator, bringing the stories to life through various sections of the gallery. The Companion contains almost eight hours of rich multimedia content in four different languages: English, Mandarin, Malay and Japanese.

Singapore Living GalleriesCovering a combined fl oor area of 1,395 square metres, the Singapore Living Galleries celebrate Singapore’s multi-racial and multi-cultural society through the times. The four lifestyle-themed Galleries will present exhibits based on Fashion, Food, Film and Photography. These four themes serve as a platform for the world to appreciate the different aspects of Singapore’s creativity.

Moving away from the traditional showcase displays, a conscious effort was made during the development of the Singapore Living Galleries to involve young Singaporean talents in the ‘telling’ and reinterpretation of facts about Singapore’s history. The result is a rich content woven together by fi lmmakers, graphic designers, lighting specialists and sound designers.

The extensive collection of artefacts and memorabilia, along with the information presented in the galleries, takes about 90 minutes to fully appreciate. Each of these Galleries has a backroom which allows a more hands-on experience and in-depth exploration of the theme.

The 10 iconic stalls refl ect ethnic diversity, cross-cultural exchange and a picture of Singapore as a port-city, where trade brought different ethnicities and commodities (like spices) into the country. With artefacts, photographs and audio-visual stations, the Gallery presents an interactive and multi-sensory approach to food.

Film Gallery

Scripting a New Dream: Trace the emergence of home-grown fi lms and the development of Chinese opera as a form of popular entertainment in Singapore. Popular fi lms of yesteryears are presented in a fresh interpretation by award-winning fi lmmaker Royston Tan.

Framing the Family: Follow the development of Singaporean families over the past one hundred years. Many of the chosen photographs mark important moments in a family’s history, but more importantly, they capture a moment in history of the family unit of Singapore.

ParksSingapore’s development as a Garden City is the result of over four decades of careful urban planning and continued conservation efforts.

Today’s park designs are innovative, stimulate creativity, as well as capture the imagination. Furthermore, additional effort has been placed to create a unique identity for each park. This includes the installation of sculptures, playgrounds and habitats to attract birds to the parks.

Through these efforts, the National Parks Board aims to cultivate in all visitors a sense of ownership and foster a spirit of community bonding. Visiting overseas school groups can enjoy the many outdoor activities available and see why Singapore places such an emphasis on nature conservation.

Park spaces and facilities can also be reserved for band performances, concerts, events and other group activities. For more information, visit www.nparks.org.sg

Fort Canning ParkFort Canning is said to be the most historic part of Singapore with ancient records pointing to this hill as the centre of a kingdom dating back to 1,300 A.D.

The hill was also a cultural landmark during colonial times. The large structures built by the British also housed the British Far East Command Centre during World War II. An underground series of bunkers known as The Battle Box uses special effects to recreate the war experience, including the historic surrender of Singapore on 15 February 1942.

Today, Fort Canning Park offers visitors a chance to explore the past and discover nature, all in the heart of the city.

Programme:

Historical Walk and Spice Garden Walk: Students can escape into the past with 14th and 19th century walks or a Spice Garden walk.

On the 14th century walk, students can visit the site where an ancient palace is said to have stood, visit a historic “sacred place” and examine an archaeological dig and exhibition.

The 19th century walk links Fort Canning Park’s key historic features: the imposing Fort Gate, Singapore’s fi rst Christian cemetery which was used until 1865, and the former mansion of Sir Stamford Raffl es, the founder of modern Singapore.

Take a stroll through the tranquil Spice Garden and learn about the intricacies of spices and herbs.

Learning Outcomes: Develop a personal perspective towards history from observations. Cite examples of historic landmarks and sites in Fort Canning Park. Identify various local spices and describe their fl avours.

The Southern RidgesThe Southern region of Singapore is verdant with lush greenery. A key site is the 9km chain of seamlessly linked nature trails and bridges known as The Southern Ridges. Whether you’re looking for a great place to jog or work out amidst lush greenery or you just want to take a leisurely stroll to enjoy the fresh air, The Southern Ridges has a lot to offer.

Touring the entire area will reveal six breathtaking nature sites and sights. Here is an overview of what you will discover if you start off through the forests of Marang Trail from behind the Harbourfront MRT station.

Mount Faber ParkMount Faber Park is one of the oldest parks in Singapore. It leads to the picturesque Faber Walk winding trail with look-out points to enjoy a panoramic view of Singapore and the coastal seas dotted with ships and islands. At Upper Faber Point, the highest point in the park, you will fi nd a wall mural depicting scenes of local history.

Mount Faber is covered by a secondary rain forest. Vegetation includes Arenga Palms, Rhododendrons, Bougainvilleas, Red Flame, Cassia Fistula and Alstonia trees. This makes the park a highly popular picnic and sightseeing venue. Eclectic dining venues and Foot Refl exology are also available for a truly relaxing stay.

Henderson WavesMount Faber Park is connected to the Telok Blangah Hill Park via the Henderson Waves pedestrian bridge. At 36m above Henderson Road, Henderson Waves is the highest among such bridges in Singapore.

The 3km bridge takes approximately fi ve minutes to cross. It features unique undulating curved steel “ribs” that alternately rise over and under its deck. These “ribs” function as shelters with seats within. Slats of yellow balau wood, an all-weather timber found in Southeast Asia, are used in the decking. Look out for carvings on the slats marking the height you are at on various points along the bridge.

Henderson Waves is lit with attractive colour-changing LED lights from 7.00pm to 2.00am daily.

Alexandra ArchAnother bridge named Alexandra Arch spans 8km of Alexandra Road. It leaves behind the Forest Walk of Telok Blangah Hill Park and leads to yet another park via the scenic Floral Walk. Nearby is Gillman Village, a former British military camp during the early 20th century. It is now home to an exciting mix of restaurants, pubs and art galleries.

Alexandra Arch is so-named because of its curved deck and tilted arch resembling an open leaf. Like Henderson Waves, Alexandra Arch dazzles with LED lights between 7.00pm and midnight daily.

HortParkThe Floral Walk then leads to HortPark (Horticulture Park) that is among the latest series of thematic parks initiated by Singapore’s National Parks Board (NParks).

HortPark is Southeast Asia’s fi rst one-stop gardening and lifestyle hub providing venues for both learning and recreation. The Hands-On House is a classroom-cum-laboratory in an outdoor setting with a sheltered demonstration area. Two green open spaces – HortLawn and Event Lawn – are also available for a variety of events and activities including workshops, shows and festival bazaars.

Kent Ridge ParkThis is a must-visit for bird-watchers and eco-tourists! Kent Ridge Park is a 47-hectare public park that takes pride in preserving its undisturbed habitat of abundant fl ora and fauna. Squirrels, sunbirds and white-crested thrushes can be spotted among the groves of Tembusu and Belukar trees.

The park was named in honour of the Duchess of Kent and her son, the Duke of Kent, who visited the park on 3 October 1952. Visit the plaque commemorating the occasion, erected at the junction of Kent Ridge Road and South Buona Vista Road in 1952.

West Coast ParkThe Southern Ridges ends at West Coast Park, a 50-hectare activity garden. First developed in 1979 on reclaimed land, the Park is designed as a haven for anyone who enjoys challenging and adventurous activities.

The Park’s most popular and active site is the Adventure Play Area ideal for toddlers and young adults. It offers the Bicycle Obstacle Course, Fitness Corner, Exercise Garden (including the Chess Garden, Foot Refl exology facilities and Bird Cage Trellis), Grand Lawn, Sand Play Area, Marsh Garden, Bird Sanctuary, 15 boat-shaped barbecue pits, a dog run corner and areas for tent pitching and kite-fl ying.

Joggers, cyclists and beach enthusiasts frequent the park for its wide stretch of pristine white sand and the chance to discover native fl ora and fauna along the coastal and mangrove vegetation. Occupying an area of 28 hectares, the park, which was once a massacre site during the Japanese Occupation, it is now dotted with barbecue pits, park benches and shelters from where one can view the sea overlooking Pulau Ubin (refer to page 81).

A leisure trip to Punggol Beach offers a quaint setting to experience serenity, freedom and nature. But, it wasn’t always all quiet and peaceful along the coast. During World War II, the beach became a notorious killing fi eld where 400 Chinese civilians perished under Japanese soldiers. The area has been marked as a national heritage site.

Sembawang BeachSembawang Beach is one of the few remaining natural beaches in Singapore. It lies on the northernmost part of Singapore facing the Straits of Johor and overlooking Malaysia. The beach is also home to Singapore’s famous Sembawang Hot Spring which is open to the public between 7.00am to 7.00pm.

A popular activity among locals is fi shing. Many line the beachfront of coastal Kampong Wak Hassan to catch Grouper and Flower crabs. While the beach offers lots of marine life, food and beverage stalls are few and far between. Many who come here enjoy bringing in their own food for a picnic.

British forces used to occupy this serene beach and its pleasant park. The only remnant of this era is the former colonial residence of Admiral Beaulieu. It has been restored and can now be seen in its full glory from the Sembawang Jetty.

Sentosa Palawan BeachPalawan Beach lies in the centre of the southern coast of Sentosa. Its most distinct feature is the suspension boardwalk, a bridge that leads to a small islet off the coast. This site is said to be the Southernmost Point of Continental Asia, or Asia’s closest point to the Equator.

Sentosa Siloso BeachThis is the beach for the hip, trendy and beach volleyball buffs. The long and broad beachfront offers a wide expanse of sandy coast for all sorts of beachcombing activities. Water activities are also aplenty such as canoeing and skim boarding. For those who would much rather stay on dry land, there’s jogging, mountain biking and roller-blading. The beach is also pet friendly; dogs are allowed to swim in the waters.

Many dining and shopping outlets lie along the beach. Nearby is the Shangri-La Rasa Sentosa Resort located at the western end of Siloso Beach.

Sentosa Tanjong BeachQuiet and peaceful even on weekends, but alive at night! Tanjong Beach, situated in the relatively secluded part of the southern coast of Sentosa, is the ideal venue for special events. It has hosted several Ibiza parties with international DJs invited to spin music for the evenings’ revelry.

The crescent-shaped beach offers clear waters, golden sand, plenty of palm trees to lie under and little shingled shelters.
