DEAN’S MESSAGE Dear Colleagues,

I want to take this opportunity to thank members of the Richmond AGO for having elected me as your new Dean. I am honored and humbled by the opportunity

to serve the guild in this capacity, and I pledge to you my wholehearted dedication to fulfill the responsibilities of this position.

Steve Henley needs to be thanked enthusiastically for being appointed the Dean twice within a ten-year span. I know Steve answered countless emails, spent

untold hours on the phone, attended numerous meetings, wrote many inspiring articles, shared fellowship with many of our chapter members at the Dean’s

Lunches—all with the goal of promoting goodwill within the Richmond AGO. Thank you, Steve!

I am grateful, too, to the many chapter members who serve(d) in leadership positions or on committees. It is the dedication of so many members that has always

drawn me to be active in the Richmond AGO. The efforts of many were publicly recognized by Eileen Guenther, the current President of the AGO, last January

when she stated that our chapter should serve as an ideal model for others. Congratulations, Richmond AGO!

We have a wonderful season of programs, recitals, and workshops planned. These events can be found on our chapter’s website. We will use the advantage of

emails, social media, and our newsletter to keep you informed of all AGO programming. I encourage you to take advantage of as many events as you can.

These are exciting times to be a member of the Richmond AGO, and I hope you will be inspired by all that our chapter has to offer this year. I look forward to

seeing you at our first event on Tuesday, September 10!

Chris Martin

Dean

DEAN'S LUNCH The first Dean’s Lunch of the season will be held Monday, September 23, 2013, 12:15 P.M., at Toast, 7007 Three Chopt Road (The Village Shopping Center). ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

EDUCATIONAL CONCERNS If you are planning to take the Service Playing Certificate exam you may apply any time and submit the application to National Headquarters between Sept. 1, 2013 and March 1, 2014. You will have from Oct. 1, 2013 until April 30, 2014 to take the recorded exam. Those thinking of taking the Colleague Exam may download an application from National after July 1, 2013 and submit it by Sept. 15, 2013 for the Nov. 15, 2013 exam date or wait to download the application after Dec. 1, 2014 for the May 19th, 2014 exam date. Any brave souls wanting to take the AAGO or the FAGO need to down load your application after Jan. 1, 2014 and send in by April 1, 2014 for a May 29 or 30 exam date and you get to go out of state to an exam center for those two exams. Choirmaster Exam has the same dates as for the AAGO and FAGO for downloading the exams application and submission thereof. Your test date will be May 28 and you, too, get to go to an exam center out of state. I attended the Regional AGO Convention in Winchester. I heard a lot of good, young college organists play; went to the silent film screening of the Phantom of the Opera with an original organ accompaniment provided by Paul Fleckenstein; a workshop concerning the AGO exams, and a shape note workshop and learned the tenor line gets the melody and ladies and bass sing harmony, a handbell concert rung by 6th Dimension Handbells, and a choral workshop by St. James Press. Mr. Schweizer from St. James Press was also the entertainment for the final luncheon/presentation. He did a talk and a program modeled after an old time radio program. He had asked for a choir from the attendees to his choral workshop and I was able to participate in that portion of the program. Great fun!! Mary Elizabeth Campbell P.S. The Polly Wolly Doodle Kyrie has been changed somewhat from the original published in Mr. Schweizer's story The Alto Wore Tweed. Now, in addition to parts of it being sung to 'The Camptown Races' tune, there is a section done in a Handel Chorale motif. We were also reminded the Pirate Eucharist Service and the Clown Eucharistic Service are both jokes and to please not use them in a real service-seems some folks have downloaded them from the St. James Music web site and then done so.........!!!!

ORGAN CONSOLE CONTROL CABLE SEVERED AT LANDMARK THEATER Future of historic theatre organ is now in question.

A local TV station reported recently that the Richmond City Chief Administrative Officer authorized the removal of the Wurlitzer pipe organ console from the stage of the Landmark Theater. The cable appeared to have been cut with a hack saw, thereby rendering the organ permanently inopera-tive, and dimming hopes that the organ will be restored in the future. Richmond AGO Chapter member and former Landmark organist Linwood Lunde had been championing the movement to keep the console in place, however, the City administration apparently allowed the destructive move even after members of the City Council had agreed to intervene in preventing the console’s removal. The report further states that concrete has been poured in the original console location. Lin has suggested that anyone interested in the well being of the Wurlitzer, contact their city coun-cil person and express their dissatisfaction that the organ was removed despite promises from the City to the contrary.

UNIQUE CHAPTER OUTREACH TO BENEFIT HISTORIC RICHMOND AREA ORGAN

The Richmond Chapter of the American Guild of Organists has agreed to participate in a one-time conditional program to assist in the recovery of a local historic instru-ment. As an active outreach participant in areas that benefit musical arts in our service area, the board has approved the following: St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church is one of the century-old historic churches in the city of Richmond. Because of shifting demographics and general economic problems which plague many urban areas today, the church had been struggling to keep its doors open . Today, there is presently a resurgence of interest and support in this historic parish and the surrounding neighborhood, and in celebration of the parish's Centennial, a new pastor has been appointed to revitalize the congregation. St. Elizabeth’s Church houses a 1905 Möller mechanical action organ which was built under the personal supervision of Matthias P. Möller. The instrument has been deemed a well specified classic example of the work that the Möller firm was producing in that time period. Originally built in 1905 for, and installed in the Fifth Street Baptist Church building in downtown Richmond, the organ was sold to the Catholic Diocese in 1925 at which time it was installed in the previously constructed St. Eliza-beth’s Church located at 2712 Second Avenue. The organ served the congregation for many decades, but by the late 1970s it had fallen into disrepair and it was consequently abandoned-in-place. From that point forward, music has been provided by the church’s gospel choir accompanied by piano. Although the organ was silent for nearly forty years, many members of the congregation fondly remembered the sounds of the old instrument which had provided music for countless weddings, funerals, graduations and other church functions, and there were calls to see if it could be brought back to life again. . In connection with the 100th Anniversary of the church, the new pastor, along with his congregation, expressed an interest in making the organ playable during the 100th Anniversary year, with the intent of raising awareness for a possible future full refurbishment. Funds, however, were non-existent. Earlier in 2013, Richmond Chapter member John DeMajo donated and installed a replacement blower, which made the organ again playable. He, along with fellow chapter member William Van Pelt, performed minor repairs to the instrument and, as a result, it was played publicly, for the first time in almost forty-years, on Easter Sunday. The outstanding recep-tion that it received, has prompted the pastor to seek help from the Guild, to have the organ played occasionally before Mass in order to help with the process of rais-ing funds through public awareness in hearing the instrument played regularly. Chapter members have already stepped forward with assistance. John Boody of Taylor & Boody volunteered to repair a number of rodent damaged pipes, and pipe maker Robbie Lawson did the work. Still being repaired are 9 more string pipes from the Swell for which Taylor & Boody must charge $400. David Storey had the broken resonator and boot of Low C of the Great 8' Trumpet repaired, voiced and installed some of the repaired pipes, and con-tinues to assist John and Bill in repairs to the action. The work has made the Great and Pedal playable and, eventually, the Swell will become playable again. But, the organ is not restored. A long-term goal is restoration at the hands of an experienced and proven organ builder, and to encourage the church, clergy, and diocese to embrace that goal and raise funds. Due to the extraordinary circumstances and request, the Richmond chapter has agreed to ‘adopt’ this organ by assisting with a schedule of regular playing of the in-strument under the following proposal. The chapter’s understanding is that this is not considered to be a new or permanent program of the chapter, but an isolated situation at this time (June 2013). The matter was brought before the Executive Committee at the June 2013 meeting and the following proposal resulted from that dis-cussion: John DeMajo is to act as a liaison between the guild and the church The organ will be played at least once a month by John and other guild members who have volunteered their services. The committee wishes to call this "Adopt the Organ" It is believed that this will serve as a good outreach program for the Richmond AGO Adopting the organ potentially could raise good publicity for the chapter The program should serve to provide an excellent opportunity for new organ students to play repertoire without the burden of service playing (an opportunity for the scholarship students to perform) Those offering to play would do so with the understanding that this is without pay

The chapter will set a time limit (nine months to one year) on this program and evaluate the outcome Persons who are interested in assisting in this project should contact John DeMajo at [email protected] or 504-858-7689.

INTRODUCING OUR 2013-14 ORGAN SCHOLARSHIP STUDENTS

Caroline Haines

Being the 8th child in a family of 9 has its advantages. Each child

plays the piano and a stringed instrument – violin, viola, double bass,

cello, guitar, and harp. There is always music at home! Caroline be-

gan playing the piano at age 6 and continues to receive instruction

from Kathy Pritchard. While attending an Alzheimer’s Fundraiser, she

was first introduced to the harp and it was love at first sight! She be-

gan harp lessons at age 8 and has continued to excel in harp perform-

ance in Richmond’s Youth Concert Orchestra, American Youth Harp

Touring Ensemble, Richmond Philharmonic Orchestra, and most re-

cently the Northern Neck Orchestra. Her first concerto performance

will be in February 2014, playing Sacred and Profane Dances by De-

bussy. Home-schooling has afforded her the time and structure to give

each instrument the necessary practice time and energy. Whether it is

on the harp, piano, or organ, she seeks to use her talents to bring glory

to God. It is with utmost appreciation and respect that she accepts the Organ Scholarship and is thrilled to be

studying under Dr. Ardyth Lohuis.

Richard Haines

Born into a family of 9, Richard has established himself as a visionary

musical artist. Having first started on the viola and the piano at age 10,

he was then introduced to the organ. His piano studies are with Kathy

Pritchard. Richard’s public appearances include performing as a guest

artist for the Richmond Philharmonic Orchestra through the 2012-2013

Season, playing in all four Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra pro-

grams, and participating in the National Piano Guild for three years. He

credits these musical acquisitions to his stellar teachers but foremost,

his personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. In the future, he

hopes to become a professional musician and a symphonic conductor.

In his free time, Richard enjoys spending time with his family. As a ris-

ing senior in high school, he looks forward to the challenges that await

him. Richard will be studying the organ with Larry Robinson.

Evan Smith is a 9th grade homeschooler from Henrico. He is a fan of all things related to Lord of the Rings and Star Wars. He enjoys aca-

demic quizzing and has participated in the Virginia Geography Bee, the

National Spelling Bee and the National History Bee. In the next few

weeks, he and some friends will be competing in the Battle of the

Brains. In the fall and spring, Evan plays soccer for Spirit. He is a mem-

ber of the Student Leadership Team at Staples Mill Road Baptist Church

and is a tutor for refugee children. He has played piano since the age of

seven and credits his piano teachers, Debbie Sacra and the late Joan Gil-

lespie, for his interest in the organ. Evan is very grateful to be a recipi-

ent of a scholarship from the Richmond Chapter of the AGO. His organ

studies will be with Grant Hellmers.

DID YOU KNOW?

When magazine readers in the early 20th Century came across ads to “Test Drive a new Möller,” they weren’t necessarily thinking about commissioning a new pipe organ. When Mathias P. Möller, founder of the Möller Organ Company, came to the United States in 1872, his plans did not immediately include becoming a prolific organ builder. Möller, whose legacy includes over 11,000 pipe organs of every size and description, had worked as a cabinet maker in his native Den-mark. Once in America, his early years were spent in the employment of noted furniture maker Peter Greenlund. Mathias was interested in the construction of musical instruments, and his natural curiosity led him to the shops of Derrick & Felgemaker who had recently relocated their business to Erie, PA from New York. After three years with that firm, he set out to build organs of his own design, along with his new partner John W. Brenisholtz. Eventually Möller sold out his interest in the firm, that had become known as The Greencastle Organ Company, after a solicitation by several prominent Hagerstown citizens, among them U.S. Senator McComas and Governor Hamilton, convinced him to establish an organ works in Maryland. But there is more to this story! In the early years of the M. P. Möller company, Mathias became interested in the new invention called the automobile. After a turn-of-the-century fire which forced the company to build a new 50,000 square foot plant in Hagerstown, Möller branched off into the automotive business by forming a partnership with Robert S. and George Crawford, two Hagerstown brothers who had made a small fortune manufacturing bicycles. Under the asso-ciation with the Crawfords, Möller’s automobile plant began operation, producing hundreds of vehicles bearing the Crawford name. While the Crawford was for the most part an unremarkable car, the next Möller-built vehicle was just the opposite. During early 1922 Möller had personally supervised the design of a companion luxury sports car to the Crawford line which debuted in the summer of 1922. Named after Queen Dagmar of Bohemia, the legendary Danish monarch, the Dagmar moniker was also shared by Moller’s eldest daughter Mary Dagmar Möller as well as the magnificent 11-story all-concrete, fireproof hotel the organ-maker built in Hagerstown during 1911. Over the next two decades, the firm became very successful especially in the manu-facture of taxi cabs and luxury cars.

Mathias Peter Möller passed away at the age of 82 on April 13, 1937 after a short illness. In addition to his organ and automobile works, Möller also owned or had a controlling interest in a number of Hagerstown businesses which included the Möller Music Store, the Dagmar Hotel, the Möller Apartments, Home Builders Build-ing and Loan Association, and the Hagerstown Trust Co. The eventual closure of the M.P. Möller Motor Car Co. closely followed the passing of its founder and namesake. Elden O. Shulenberger (B 1877- D 1944), vice-president of the organ works, had overseen the automobile plant for the past few years and upon Möller’s passing he assumed the presidency of the Motor Car Co and oversaw its liquida-tion. .
