Discuss the development process of the NGSS
Provide information regarding the NGSS and relationship to CCSS
Goal of NGSSDevelop standards that will be rich in content
and practice, arranged in a coherent manner across disciplines and grades to provide all students an internationally benchmarked science education.

NGSS vs CCSS
• Focus on Content Standards and Practices
• Privately Funded• May be adopted fully or partially
• Literacy in Science• Convened by State Schools Officers and Governors
• Must be adopted in its entirety
Science Testing is mandated by Federal Requirements
California is 1 of 26 Lead State Partners
NGSS Development Process
Two major goals addressed in A Framework for K-12 Science Education are:
•educating all students in science and engineering and
•providing the foundational knowledge for those who will become the scientists, engineers, technologists, and technicians of the future.
A Vision for K-12 Science Education
Three Major dimensions:
Scientific and engineering practices
Crosscutting concepts

Conceptual Shifts in the NGSS1. K–12 Science Education Should Reflect the Real World
Interconnections in Science
2. Science and Engineering Practices and Crosscutting Concepts should not be taught in a vacuum; they should always be integrated with multiple core concepts throughout the year.
3. Science concepts build coherently across K-12
4. The NGSS Focus on Deeper Understanding and Application of Content
5. Integration of science and engineering
6. Coordination with Common Core State Standards
Dimension 3: Disciplinary Core Ideas• Physical Sciences
PS 1: Matter and its interactionsPS 2: Motion and stability: Forces and interactionsPS 3: EnergyPS 4: Waves and their applications in technologies for
information transfer
• Life SciencesLS 1: From molecules to organisms: Structures and
processesLS 2: Ecosystems: Interactions, energy, and dynamicsLS 3: Heredity: Inheritance and variation of traitsLS 4: Biological evolution: Unity and diversity
• Earth and Space SciencesESS 1: Earth’s place in the universeESS 2: Earth’s systemsESS 3: Earth and human activity
• Engineering, Technology, and the Applications of ScienceETS 1: Engineering designETS 2: Links among engineering, technology, science, and
society
