OVERVIEW OF HOME LEARNING AT COLLINGWOOD

Home Learning at Collingwood is designed to provide continuity, to ensure continued progress toward established learning targets for all our students, and to foster the relationships between students, families, and teachers that positively impact student learning. In keeping with Collingwood’s commitment to exceptional education, Home Learning experiences are developed to be robust and meaningful.

PHASES OF THE HOME LEARNING PLAN

The phased learning plan diagrammed below may evolve differently depending on the COVID-19 situation and the direction we receive from the Ministries of Education and Health.

OUR VALUES

Aligned with the core values of our school, we will follow a framework of Home Learning that focuses on:Community -- We will maintain close contact with all students and families and continue to support the mental, physical, and emotional wellness of our community.Curiosity -- We will explore a variety of online resources, new approaches to learning and reflect on how learning is working for students and faculty.Courage -- We will practice patience, not perfection and embrace the inevitable mistakes and challenges that we will face as opportunities for our own learning.

OUR CORE BELIEFS

• Student wellness is at the core of all we do and essential learning is key; teachers will focus on the most relevant skills and content for success.

• Relationships are central to learning; although a variety of online learning methods will be employed, students will see their teachers “face-to-face” on a regular basis. Students may also use online tools to connect for study and group work and have access to some on-site experiences.

• Engagement and connection will be the focus of our Home Learning programme. • Assessment tasks will look different online; teachers will provide opportunities for students

to show their understanding in a way that requires real application of the material and explore alternate ways to summatively assess learning.

BLENDED LEARNING

At Wentworth, we will use a “blended” approach of synchronous and asynchronous learning opportunities in order to ensure that options are available to families in a variety of circumstances. In all cases, teachers will support experiential learning that includes creation, experimentation, hands-on learning and reflection. In addition to supporting the building of specific academic skills, teachers will prioritize and encourage time that is dedicated to connecting with family members, reading books, playing games, and spending time outdoors.

The following tools for use in home learning may include but are not limited to:• Seesaw• Google Classroom• Video Conferencing (Google Meet, Zoom for GSuite)• Screencasts• Online Chat (Meet Conversations) • Online videos (YouTube, Khan Academy, Ted-Ed)• Flipgrid• Video mini-lesson (from iPad, phone or webcam)• Online simulation and animations (Gizmos) • Website resources• Text and visuals (Google Docs, Slides, etc.)

THE WENTWORTH TIMETABLE

Wentworth will observe a timetable as outlined below, purposely built for flexibility to meet the variety of contexts that our families find themselves in at this time. Students will have the opportunity to check-in on a daily basis with their teachers and classmates twice each day. These are encouraged, but are not required. Teachers will share lessons aligned to the BC curriculum through SeeSaw (JK-3) or Google Classroom (4-7), prioritizing English Language Arts and mathematics. Details specific to grade levels will be shared by homeroom teachers through email and posted on class websites. Our Wentworth community will have “Quiet Hour” everyday between 12pm-1pm to support the wellbeing of everyone in our community. No online communication will take place during this time.

EXPECTATIONS FOR STUDENTS AND FAMILIES

Our school is in a unique situation but want to encourage this as an opportunity for authentic learning for children. Some strategies for parents include:• Take advantage of the learning that presents itself each day. Cooking, gardening, building,

exercising, reading and playing games with your children will give them experiences that will support them in their learning.

• Connect with homeroom teachers daily (if possible). Teachers will be available between 8am and 4pm. Attendance will be taken each day to monitor family engagement. This will include participation in at least one online communication.

• When engaging in “school work”, find a space to work to spread out learning materials.• If there is more than one child in the family, try to create individual space for each sibling.• When participating in a “live” class or conference online, be in a well-lit, public location where

an adult is able to monitor the session.• Begin each class via the “live” camera for attendance to be taken and ensure that only the

student is interacting on screen unless directed otherwise by the teacher (ie. parents and caregivers are not “participating”).

• Ensure that children take frequent breaks away from technology.• Keep lines of communication open with teachers and school administrators.• Adhere to the Collingwood Code of Conduct and Family Code of Conduct.• Practice patience and kindness as this is new learning for all involved.• If your family chooses to participate in on-site instruction, please follow all health and safety

protocols and do not come to school if anyone in the household is ill.

TOOLS TO ENHANCE HOME TEACHING AND HOME LEARNING

As much as possible, teachers will use digital tools and resources your children are already familiar with and can use independently. Please ensure you have a “gmail account” and familiarize yourself with Google Meet for live (synchronous) communication, as well as SeeSaw and/or Google Classroom in order to support your children. Wentworth will share online tutorials and links for support, coordinate “Parent Meets” for questions and connections, will have a Home Learning Parent Help Desk to contact, and will continue our “Parent Education Series” with a focus on Technology Tools used in Home Learning.

DIGITAL LITERACY AND CITIZENSHIP

Home and Online Learning requires a heightened level of engagement with Digital Literacy and Digital Citizenship so that students have the ability and confidence to learn with digital tools safely, responsibly and effectively.• What Digital Literacy and Citizenship skills are students using?• How is Digital Literacy and Citizenship being explicitly taught and practiced?• How is the use of digital tools emphasising content creation over consumption? (see above -

Opportunities to Create and Do).
