Different Paths: Standards Development
Individual Method
• Participants are individual technical experts• Individuals represent themselves• Each individual participant has 1 vote• Ballot groups are made up of a minimum of
10 individuals• Ballot group participants must be IEEE-SA
individual members
Entity (Corporate) Method
• Participants are “entities,” i.e., companies, universities, government bodies, etc.
• Designated representative and alternate represent the entity
• Each entity has one vote• Requires 3 entities• Entity sends representatives to meetings

Why Standards and AR?
A good standard
• Addresses widespread need• Accelerates (reduces barrier for) innovation
A valuable standard
• Is consistently and widely implemented in target platform(s)• With few exceptions, becomes “invisible” (do people think about
802?)• Opens market opportunities for adopters, regardless of their size
Having AR standards will allow for widespread market adoption and implementation

IEEE P1907.1 Network-Adaptive Quality of Experience (QoE) Management Scheme for
Real-Time Mobile Video Communications– End-to-end QoE: Standardized human visual perception-based
metrics for real-time video– Network-adaptive video encoding and decoding algorithms– Real-time feedback control mechanisms for end-to-end video QoE
The purpose of this standard is to enable network operators, application developers, service/content providers, and end-users to develop, deploy and utilize collaborative services that employ real-time 2-way and multi-party video connectivity within any mobile browser, application, game, device, or service platform
AR is one of the “collaborative services” one might imagine using real time bidirectional video because the video from the user camera is often sent into a cloud service for analysis and recognition of salient attributes, and because there can be video sent to mobile device as an asset that overlays the physical world view

IEEE 2200
High Quality Mobile Experience– Chartered to enable delivery of high-quality content through the
standardization of time-shifted caching to mobile devices
Purpose: – To improve user experience in the delivering of mobile content– To relieve congestion on the wireless networks caused by streaming
Approved as an IEEE standard
Working on a revision to – Support more Device Types
• Intermediate (Storage) Devices• IoT Devices
– Simplify APIs (eliminate WebIDL definitions)– Enhance ability to uniquely identify networks/IoT devices

IEEE P3333.2
This standard will establish the minimum requirements for enabling portability and consistent display of 3-D medical images across dedicated 3D display equipment, computers, mobile smart pads and smart phones.
Includes standardization of volume image rendering (texture), collaboration of fragmented images and 3D models, data storage, data compression, data transport, motion simulation, 3D platforms, and 3D model management systems
Describes a set of parameters and other guidance for manufacturers of graphic display devices to enable 3-D images to be consistently displayed across a variety of imaging devices
The focus on medical data is good as there are many emerging AR use cases in medical – The real impact is going to be the standard’s ability to describe the
human beings in the world in a consistent manner.
Touches upon data transmission from the medical imaging device that could be a device for quantified self
