Sports Center Usage

Our gym is very popular during the winter months, so we wanted to let you know the private rental policy, which allows for open gym availability for our residents on a daily basis.

For the month of February, we rent out the gym on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 to 9pm and on Tuesday and Thursdays from 6 to 7pm due to the high demand. In addition, a resident can rent the gym and activity room for a one- time event like a kids party etc. Currently, all gym time is rented; however, by mid-March there will be times available, so contact the office if you would like to rent the gym in the upcoming months.

The cost per hour is $35 and we limit the number of one-time events to twice per month. The hours that the gym is rented for private practices and events is noted on the newsletter calendar. We also post any changes to the calendar on the front doors of the sports center. In addition, there is an adult men’s basketball league on Sundays from 5 to 9pm that runs through the 2nd week of March.

Please refer to the calendar for our regular hours and phone number for the gym. The age limit for un-attended resident children is 12 years old. We ask that your children who bring guests to the gym fill out a guest pass even if the attendant is busy at the Lodge and therefore, not present in the gym.

FITNESS ROOM REMINDER:The fitness room is open 24/7. Contact the Lodge to sign up, sign a waiver and purchase key(s) - $10 each. Please note that the fitness room is available to those residents 16 and over and guests that are with a resident. The guest fees can be charged to your lot or pay cash at the Sports Center to the Sport Attendants.

President’s MessageSean Ryan

The month of February signals winter will soon give way to spring. February is one of my favorite winter months in Owl Creek because, in February, we honor all of our neighborhood volunteers. Volunteers make Owl Creek the best place to live in Louisville. I love Owl Creek for many reasons, but one of the most significant ones is the giving spirit so many people in our great community have. Whether it is lending a hand to a neighbor in need through our helping hands program, helping at the many social events we have for both kids and adults or becoming involved in running one of our many small groups, volunteers make it happen! I know I appreciate everyone who helps out. If you have not had an opportunity to volunteer and would like to, I would love to connect you with your preferred activity and the right person to make it happen. Call me on my cell 502.741.7813 and I would be happy to help.

February also is the time your elected Board puts the finishing touches on next year’s Association budget. The Board is always looking for input on items you think need to be considered, as we develop a budget which will keep our common property and facilities in great shape in order to preserve our property values and is also fiscally responsible. If you have an idea for next year’s budget, please email me or call, [email protected] or 502.741.7813.

February is also one of my favorite winter months because the National Football League crowns its next champion in Super Bowl LI. Each year we have a great Super Bowl party in the Owl Creek Lodge. If you have not had a chance to come in the past, we would love to see you on Sunday, February 5th, as the Atlanta Falcons take on the 4X Super Bowl Champion, New England Patriots. It promises to be a great game, but the good company of friends and neighbors will be even better.

I look forward to seeing you around the neighborhood.

Go PATS!

Sean

Owl Creek is a wonderful place to live. We have neighbors who care about each other, fun activities, and a general sense of community. However, this does not keep us immune to crime and shady undertakings. We continue to have the occasional car break-in and petty theft, but recently we had some of our neighbors experience vandalism, including eggs being thrown at their homes and spray painting of their home and belongings. In addition, a young lady was asked by a man to get into his SUV. She wisely declined without further incident.

I ask each of you to be aware of your surroundings, if something looks strange or even just gives you a bad feeling, call 911 and report it. Our local police officers from the 8th precinct have asked us to do this and have said they would rather investigate something that turns out to be a false alarm than the alternative of one our citizens being wronged.

Continue to keep your cars locked and belongings out of sight. If your children have to walk home after dark make sure they let you know when they are leaving and when to expect them home. Better yet, use the buddy system and travel in twos; predators are less likely to approach multiple children.

Finally, please use caution when driving through the neighborhood. Many people exceed the posted speed limit of 25 MPH, roll through stop signs, are texting while driving, and I’ve even witnessed a driver go around a stopped school bus. The Lodge has received numerous similar complaints. For the sake of your children and your neighbors children please drive carefully! Please remind your teenage drivers the safe driving rules when buses are present.

Let’s strive to keep Owl Creek safe and a community we can all be proud of in 2017 and beyond!

SAFETY TIPSChief Jeffrey J. Riddle

Exit Drills In the Home (EDITH)

Did you know that it is a State law that all School Systems must have fire drills? The schools conduct fire drills to ensure that every student know a primary and a secondary route to exit the building. After exiting the building the teachers make sure that all of the students are accounted for.

The same should apply to our homes. On average we spend more time there than anyplace else and although we feel more comfortable at home; practicing fire or “exit drills” is just as, if not more important, than at school or work. Most people are creatures of habit; if you enter and exit your home through the front door on most occasions, this is where you will go during an emergency. Always plan two ways out of every structure. For example, in your house, the front and rear doors are the primary entry and exit points.

If you are trapped by fire in your bedroom, you always have the window. This is why every bedroom is required to have a window that opens. Once you have exited your home, or any structure, have a specific meeting place to account for everyone. As always, once you are out, stay out! Never go back into a house that is on fire or has smoke in it.

No matter where you are, whether it’s a restaurant, night club, or banquet hall, always make a mental note of exits. I always look for the closest exits whenever I am out. Remember, people will almost always try to exit the way they came in, even if there is a closer exit.

Be sure to check your furnace filters at least every thirty (30) days. The District will respond to several reports of odor of smoke in the house over the next few months. Most of these will be caused by overheated fan motors on the furnace. By not changing or cleaning your filters the fan motor will overheat and could produce a smell or even some smoke in the house.

Carbon Monoxide is a toxic gas, but, being colorless, odorless, tasteless and non-irritating, it is very hard to detect. Carbon Monoxide is a product of incomplete combustion of gasoline, natural gas and propane or improper ventilation of these gases. Symptoms include headaches and flu like effects; larger exposures can lead to significant toxicity of the central nervous system. (You may have trouble keeping your balance or walking). Prolonged exposure can even cause death. There is only one way to detect carbon monoxide and that is with a UL listed detector. There are several of these available to choose from at your local retail stores. I personally like the electric with battery backup and has a digital read out.

For more info, you can contact Captain Dave Dittmer at 245-7555 or [email protected].
