The Petit Proust Questionnaire You know the Proust Questionnaire? We’ve reimagined it to give a glimpse into the lives, personalities, and childhoods of Owlkids Books authors and illustrators.
Here are a few sneak peeks:
When you were a kid, what was your
favorite thing to do?
My favorite thing to do was to spend time with animals. I grew up with five dogs and three cats, and I loved playing and snuggling with them. But I also liked to just watch the wild animals in my backyard — squirrels, birds, deer, raccoons, skunks, and more.
When you were a kid in school, what
did you look for in a friend?
Do you like being funny, drawing, and playing video games? Then we can be best friends! In fact, I still have the same best friend from first grade. We still draw, play video games, and make each other laugh.
If you weren’t an author or illustrator,
what job would you have?
I love the job I have now: teaching elementary school.

Skunk on a String Written and illustrated by Thao Lam
In Skunk on a String, we meet a skunk who has been tied to the tail of a balloon.
Try as he might, the persistent critter can’t get anyone to untie him. In this
wordless story, he is shooed and swatted through a bustling parade, past the
windowpanes of the city’s apartment buildings with their diverse, busy
inhabitants, and then up to the construction cranes high above the city. He
floats through the zoo, into traffic, under water, and eventually lands atop a
Ferris wheel. When he finally unties himself, the skunk misses the aerial life —
so he comes up with an inspired way to fly again.
Paper collage art in whimsical colors and patterns — polka dots, gingham, and
florals — creates a playful dynamic and brilliantly captures details of urban life,
from the legs of a crowd to window boxes, spilled ice cream, and clothing
flapping on clotheslines. This heartwarming, highly visual adventure takes a
new vantage point on the ordinary and shows the skunk expanding his
horizons, overcoming adversity, and, eventually, helping himself.
THAO LAM studied illustration at Sheridan College in Toronto and works as an art buyer for an educational publishing company. She has an insatiable love of colored and textured papers, which she uses to create her exuberant collages. She draws inspiration from the stories she hears, from the beauty in everyday things, and from the work of the many illustrators she admires. She lives in Toronto, Ontario.
A playful wordless tale about one skunk’s day flying high on the tail
of a balloon

A Dog Day for Susan By Maureen Fergus
Illustrated by Monica Arnaldo
Spencer and his family are expecting a visit from Great-Aunt Alice and her dog,
Susan. All Spencer knows is that she’s dignified and graceful, with long,
beautiful hair — the dog, that is. Spencer and his own pup, Barney, are excited
to have another dog to play with and decide to give her a chance. But it soon
becomes clear that Susan is no regular dog. She eats cake off a china plate,
takes scheduled naps, and needs an umbrella held over her in the rain.
Spencer and Barney decide to teach Susan how to be a real dog. Using Barney
as a role model, they take her to the off-leash dog park to develop skills like
barking at buses, cyclists, and squirrels, eating garbage, resisting grooming, and
refusing to come when she’s called. Susan returns from the park covered in
burrs, having shed her dignity and grace enough to fully embrace her inner
dog. Playful illustrations support the humorous text in this story about
embracing who you are.
MAUREEN FERGUS is an award-winning author of books for children and young adults. Her books include And What If I Won’t? (Owlkids Books, 2015), The Day My Mom Came to
Kindergarten, and The Gypsy King. She lives in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
MONICA ARNALDO studied illustration at Sheridan College in Toronto. She combines a variety of media, including watercolor, pencil crayon, acrylic, and graphite, to create images full of character. She has written and illustrated two previous titles with Owlkids Books: Arto’s Big

A boy and his hound show one stuffy canine how to be a real dog
Barney obeyed with breathtaking fervor. He strained
against his leash. He barked at buses and cyclists and
pedestrians and squirrels and fire hydrants. He gulped
down stuff he found on the ground before Spencer was
able to pry it out of his mouth. He peed everywhere.
“Are you getting all this, Susan?” asked Spencer.
As soon as they were outside,
Spencer said, “Okay, Barney, show
Susan how to be a regular dog!”
Finally, Spencer said, “Susan, I’m going to take off your leash, and
you’re going to run away and not come until I’ve called you at least a
bazillion times. Understand?”
Susan seemed to understand, so Spencer slowly unclipped her leash.
For one forever moment, Susan just looked at Spencer.
Then she barked in his face and started
chasing Barney.
“COME!” hollered Spencer. “SUSAN, COME!”
Susan ignored him completely.
By the time they were ready to go home,
Susan was covered in burrs and her tail was
wagging so hard it nearly knocked Spencer over.
“You know what, Susan?” asked Spencer.
“Arf!” said Susan.
“You’re right!” laughed Spencer.
“I am glad to know that underneath
all that hair, you’re just a
regular dog!”
Spencer, Barney, and Susan
stayed at the park for hours.

A little girl discovers how stories can help overcome fears
Maya By Mahak Jain
Illustrated by Elly MacKay
The electricity in Maya’s house
has gone out again. She is afraid
of the dark — and her fear has
been even worse since her
father died. Now it feels as if the
darkness will never go away.
Maya’s mother distracts her with a legend about the banyan tree, which
saved the world from the first monsoon by drinking up the floodwaters, and
growing tall and strong. Later that night, unsettled by the noises around her,
Maya revisits the story in her imagination. She ventures deep into the
banyan tree, where she discovers not darkness but life: snakes move gently,
monkeys laugh, and elephants dance. Maya pushes her imagination even
further to call up memories of her father, helping to soothe her fear and
assuage her grief.
Elly MacKay mixes miniature-paper-theater art with spellbinding shadow
puppetry to play with darkness and light, giving Maya’s real, fantasy, and
story-within-a-story worlds unique treatment — and making Maya’s world
come alive on the page.
MAHAK JAIN is a writer and editor based in Toronto, Ontario. She is enrolled in the MFA in Creative Writing program at the University of Guelph. She was previously the managing editor at Owlkids and at Lobster Press. Maya is Mahak’s first picture book.
ELLY MACKAY received her bachelor of fine art from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. She creates her illustrations by inking yupo paper and cutting it into layers that she sets up somewhat like a Victorian paper theater. Then she plays with lights and filters to create atmosphere and photographs the scenes. She lives in Owen Sound, Ontario.
The Artist and Me By Shane Peacock
Illustrated by Sophie Casson
Vincent van Gogh is now known as an
acclaimed, incomparable
Post-impressionist painter. But when he
lived in Arles, France, in the 1880s, he was
mocked for being different. Back then,
van Gogh was an eccentric man with wild
red hair who used clashing hues to paint
unusual-looking people and strange starry
skies. Children and adults alike called
him names and laughed at him. Nobody bought his art. But he kept
painting.
Inspired by these events, The Artist and Me is the fictional confession of one
of van Gogh’s bullies — a young boy who adopted the popular attitude of
the adults around him. It’s not until the boy faces his victim alone that he
realizes there is more than one way to see the world.
Artwork in the book uses vibrant color and texture to bring the laneways,
cafés, and wheat fields of southern France to life while playing on scenes
from van Gogh’s own work. The lyrical text carries the emotional weight of
the subject and will leave readers with the understanding that everyone’s
point of view is valuable.
A bullying story rooted in the life of painter Vincent van Gogh
SHANE PEACOCK, biographer, journalist, and screenwriter, is also the author of six novels and three plays. He is the creator of The Boy Sherlock Holmes series, has written for Orca’s Seven series, and has been nominated for the Governor General’s Literary Award. He lives near Cobourg, Ontario. The Artist and Me is Shane’s first picture book.
SOPHIE CASSON is a Montreal, Quebec–based illustrator who finds inspiration in Ukiyo-e (a genre of Japanese woodblock printing), prewar-era children’s books, post-war posters, and stencil art. She has been nominated for the Governor General’s Literary Award and was runner-up for the Mr. Christie’s Book Award.

You Are One By Sara O’Leary
Illustrated by Karen Klassen
A baby’s first year is full of
memorable milestones. Learning to
crawl, taking first steps, tasting new
foods, and forming first words are all
exciting achievements. You Are One
looks back on each of these universal
moments and more, inviting little
ones and their parents to celebrate
how much they have grown and
discovered in just one year, from playing peekaboo to first teeth.
Narrated in the second person, You Are One is a charming read-aloud that
addresses the baby directly. Supersaturated ink-and-wash illustrations play
with pattern and perspective and lend a hip, artistic feel to the book. The
diverse babies pictured come to life on the page through the realism of the
art, and add to the text’s warmth, sweetness and broad appeal. The first in a
three-book series, You Are One is designed as a whimsical gift for new parents
who will enjoy reflecting on their baby’s first year and expressing how much
their little one is loved.

Blanche Hates the Night Written and illustrated by Sibylle Delacroix
Every day ends the same. Night always
falls. Blanche’s mom turns off the light
and closes Blanche’s bedroom door.
It’s time to go to sleep.
There’s just one problem: Blanche
hates the night. She does not want to
go to sleep! She would much rather
play. So she puts on a concert to chase away the moon and wake up the
sun. She sings in rhyme and somersaults upon her bed, which she imagines
is a trampoline.
Blanche’s mother’s voice floats in: “Stop that racket!” and “To bed, my little
songbird.” But Blanche dominates each spread with her expressive face and
creative, endearing attempts to stave off sleep.
Illustrations in a muted palette mimic shades of night while clean lines let
Blanche’s charming facial expressions take center stage. Bursting with
personality, Blanche is a willful, sensitive character kids will relate to.
Blanche Hates the Night is an ideal bedtime read-aloud: eventually, exhausted,
she falls into a peaceful slumber.
An adorable story about a stubborn girl who refuses
to go to sleep

Mom, Dad, Our Books, and Me By Danielle Marcotte
Illustrated by Josée Bisaillon
Reading takes many forms. Some of us
read novels, while others read cookbooks,
sheet music, tarot cards, or even the stars
in the sky. We read clocks, train schedules,
and facial expressions. In this ode to
reading, each form is celebrated. Mom,
Dad, Our Books, and Me follows a young boy
and those around him — parents,
grandparents, aunts and uncles, and
neighbors — as they all read, immersed in what moves them.
Vibrant, whimsical paper collage artwork depicts the colors and textures of
the many places in which we read, from hammocks and bubble baths to
park benches and waiting rooms. The diverse cityscapes and landscapes
often include fanciful elements of imagination.
Mom, Dad, Our Books, and Me will leave young readers reveling in this
newfound or soon-to-come skill that sparks new adventures and brings
people together.

My House Is Alive! The Weird and Wonderful
Sounds Your House Makes
Written and illustrated by Scot Ritchie
What’s that sound? Starting with a
simple question, My House Is Alive! takes
readers on a tour of the basic inner
workings of a house and explains the
scientific reason for the knocks,
thumps, bangs, and booms we hear. For
example: that knocking sound in the
walls? It’s caused by the expansion and
contraction of metal vents that carry air to heat your home. Creaking can
happen when wood dries out, and buzzing can come from to vibrating
plates inside fluorescent lights.
Two spreads are devoted to each scary sound: the first shows the source of
the noise as imagined by a small boy — a monster, giant insect, or other
wacky creature — and the second explains the reality behind it. Scot
Ritchie’s explanations of scientific ideas are accessible through text and
illustration in this imaginative informational picture book that will dispel
fears about scary noises and satisfy scientific curiosity.

Frank and Laverne Written by Dave Whamond and
Jennifer Stokes
Illustrated by Dave Whamond
Every morning by 06:00 hours,
Frank is awake and on duty for
Squirrel Patrol. This pug takes his
role seriously: basic training,
neighborhood surveillance, and,
most importantly, protecting his humans and the cat, Laverne, from the
Great Dane next door.
Laverne, however, prefers a more refined lifestyle of napping, kneading her
cat bed, and scorning humans’ ridiculous behavior. As much as Frank loves
her, the deadpan Laverne loathes Frank. She dreams of sending him away
forever and claiming his fish-shaped chew toy for herself.
Both pets report their perspectives separately, from opposite ends of the
book, until the story comes to a head in the middle with a single encounter
that Frank and Laverne perceive in very different ways.
Written in the style of a daily log with text and illustrations interspersed, the
story abounds with verbal and visual humor that will appeal especially to
reluctant readers. Rich vocabulary, onomatopoeia, and the play on
opposing points of view make this a smart, laugh-out-loud pick for
critical reading.

Worms for BreakfastHow to Feed a ZooBy Helaine Becker
Illustrated by Kathy Boake
Feeding time is one of the most popular
events at zoos. It also prompts a smorgasbord
of questions: what do different animals eat?
How much food do they need to stay healthy?
Where do zookeepers get all that chow? And
what constitutes a special treat?
Worms for Breakfast: How to Feed a Zoo answers
all these questions and more in a cookbook-style primer packed with facts
from experts at zoos and aquariums. Covering everything from regular
animal nutrition to feeding babies to mimicking how animals hunt and eat
in the wild, this book explores the eating habits of carnivores, omnivores,
herbivores, and insectivores. Inside, you’ll also find real-life recipes from
zoos around the world for meals like eucalyptus-leaf pesto, kelp tank
goulash, and mealworm mush. Beware: You probably don’t want to eat any
of it yourself!
Written in a plucky, conversational tone with delightfully wacky illustrations,
a glossary, and tips for zoo animal care, this book is bound to appeal to
picky readers.
Ever wondered what zoo animals eat?

Half-Truths and Brazen LiesAn Honest Look at LyingBy Kira Vermond
Illustrated by Clayton Hanmer
Do you believe in telling the truth? Sure
you do. But even that’s a lie — because we
all fib. Whether to protect a friend, to
make someone feel better, or to avoid
telling even bigger lies later, lying is actually
central to human nature. Usually we’re
taught that lying is bad, and that’s that. But
in reality, it’s rarely so black and white.
Kira Vermond’s latest book answers questions like: Why do we lie? What
types of lies are there? What are the consequences of lying? What methods
are used to detect lies? And when is it okay or even good to lie?
From forgeries and hoaxes to plagiarism and placebos, Half-Truths and
Brazen Lies offers historical anecdotes, scientific studies, and sociocultural
analyses to help unpack the complex world of untruths. Told in a witty,
conversational tone with an index and full-color illustrations, the book takes
a thorough, nuanced approach to a fascinating aspect of human behavior.
