Dear Members and Friends of Trinity,
Isaiah reminds us, Thus says the Lord, who created you, O Jacob, who formed you, O Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass
through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For
I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. (Isaiah 43:1-3)
After lots of prayer and reflection, and trusting in the Holy Spirit’s guidance, I have made the decision to resign as Co-Pastor of Trinity. It has been my privilege to serve the mission and ministry of Trinity Lutheran Church as Co-Pastor during these past two years. As God called me for a time to serve among you, God now calls me forth to serve in a new way, in a new place, among a new people though still one in the body of Christ. I have accepted a call to become Pastor of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Nashville. I will begin this new call and adventure on July 1, 2019. My last Sunday at Trinity will be June 23, 2019.
I am grateful for the time that God has called me to serve alongside you as pastor. We have done great and wondrous things in our life together these last years. Thank you for helping me grow as a pastor, leader, and child of God. I am confident the Holy Spirit will continue to move through this community of faith as you share the grace of God with the Chattanooga area. When I first came to Trinity, I wrote of God’s activity in times of transition. Friends, we are entering a time of transition and change, a new season of life. We might not know all that God is up to in our new transitional period, but we can rest assured that Christ will walk with us along the way. I covet your prayers as Becky and I begin this transition and hope that you know we will continue to hold you in our prayers. We are eternally thankful for the grace you have shown us and for your faithfulness and participation in God’s ministry at Trinity. May God’s presence be with you always.
Grace and peace, Pastor Chris Smith

“Pastor, I heard that Matthew, Mark, and Luke, are called the ’synoptic ’gospels. What is meant by this?”
The first three gospels are called synoptic because they have a common view of the ministry of the Lord, in contrast to John. Nevertheless, each gospel offers its own view and memory of the events of Jesus’ ministry, death, and resurrection. Each writer does more than repeat the specific tradition about Jesus. By their choice and arrangement of material each writer reflects his own theological position, as well as his own purpose for writing the gospel. Many theologians today believe that the writers of these three gospels somewhat followed an earlier written document, and some think that earlier document was the book of Mark. This is suggested by the fact that of his 661 verses Matthew reproduces 606, and Luke 320. Only 31 verses of Mark do not appear either in Matthew or in Luke. Another reason is that Matthew and Luke generally follow Mark’s order of arranging of the material. Of course, it is possible that other previous documents may have assisted Mark, Matthew, and Luke in producing their gospels about Jesus and his ministry.
The beauty of the synoptic gospels, and in the New Testament as a whole, is that it is such a great resource to the faithful. Even as the nature of the material varies; basic is the kerygma or proclamation of Christ. Second, we find didache or teaching, and third, we find leiturgia or the response of praise and worship.
It is a sad fact that far too many Christian worshipers today haven’t learned the value and importance of leiturgia (liturgy). Fewer and fewer avail themselves of regular worship and many of those that do so, push congregational leaders and pastors to shorten and simplify the liturgy, failing to understand that liturgy is simply our response to God’s grace bestowed upon us. Good liturgy done well offers each of us the opportunity to demonstrate to God our humble appreciation of His generosity.

“Won’t You Be My Neighbor” is a new section in Glad Tidings for Trinity. Each month I will ask a member questions and we will listen to their answers. In an effort to know each other in a more personal way, we may feature ONE ADULT member and ONE CHILD member (depending on response) in every newsletter. Please check your email, occasionally , to see if you have been randomly selected.— Thank you.
Tell a little about you and your life. I'm Anne. Married 37 year old stay at home mom with 3 kids. I grew up in Knoxville, but moved to Chattanooga after graduating college in 2003 from Emory and Henry College with a BA in Religion. I got my Masters of Science in Social Work in 2011. My twins were born in 2012 and daughter in 2016. The kids keep me pretty busy. When I carve out a self-care time, I enjoy quilting and knitting.
Who inspires you? Lots of people inspire me all the time. I don't think I can narrow it down to just one or two.
Best concert you've ever been to? Weird Al and Bon Jovi . They weren't together. Both were great for different reasons.
Favorite place in the world? Sitting on a rock by a creek in the mountains.
Favorite book (other than bible)? Again, too hard to give one favorite. So I’ll give you a few that I'm reading now or just finished. Accidental Saints by Nadia Bolz-Weber, The Outlander Series by Diana Gabaldon, Ready Player One by Ernest Cline, and Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard.
Do you perform volunteer work? Where and why? Currently my only volunteer work is at the church. I lead the inter-generational Sunday School class and Sack Supper Saint (women's bible study). I love teaching and being in community with other people.
What are you currently watching on Netflix/TV? Currently finishing up Beauty and the Beast and starting Lucifer on Netflix.
Do you have a pet peeve? When people don't take 5 minutes to verify information before sharing it online.
What's your secret talent? I don't know, you tell me. It’s a secret from me too.
What color crayon would you be & why? I would be the multicolored crayon because I don't always want to be the same. I change and grow all the time.
Least favorite superhero & why? I'm honestly, not a huge superhero fan in general. I find most super hero movies boring.
Are you difficult or easy to get to know? Why? I like to think that I'm easy to get to know. I tend to be pretty open about my life, likes, and dislikes.
(Anne also helps in the church office when she gets a minute of free time.)

Monday, June 6th @ 6:00 in the library.
TLC Caregivers’ Support Group invites the congregation to join them in attending a presentation on counseling, Monday, September 9, 2019 at 6 P.M. in the Paul George Room.
Have you ever thought that you or someone you know might benefit from counseling? Have you ever wondered how to find a counselor and whether you need a clinical psychologist, social worker or marriage and family therapist? Would a Christian counselor be the best fit? How much would it cost? These and other questions will be addressed by Anne Verwey, an intern counselor and graduate student at Richmont Graduate University. Ms. Verwey received her BA in Psychology from Covenant College. She has worked with adolescents struggling with addiction and mental health disorders and has guided
