Sweet shop acquires security improvements
Sweet Greetings, a double award winning retro sweet shop based on Church Street, Shildon, have been awarded grant support as part of the Bishop Auckland & Shildon AAP Secure Business Scheme. The project became important after the business became the target of
criminal activity and anti-social behaviour. The Secure Business Scheme, supported by the local AAP, provided Sweet Greetings with a free crime prevention survey which was completed by a member of the Safer Neigh-bourhoods Team. The business now boasts
significant improvements to its security thanks, in part, to Bishop Auckland and Shildon Security Grant Scheme. Lyn Neilson from Sweet Greetings Said, “The Bishop Auckland and Shildon Security Grant has really helped us have peace of mind more than anything. When people come into the shop we remind them of the security measures in place, we also have signs up that will help act as a deterrent for any would-be criminals. The improvements have proved to be very useful, not only to Sweet Greetings but to surrounding businesses located on Church Street.”The scheme has been estab-lished to provide increased security measures and “target hardening” improve-ments to SME businesses in the BASH area which have often been seen by criminals to be easy targets for theft and damage. As a result of these improve-ments, businesses which engage with the scheme and benefit from both the crime prevention survey and potential grant funding can effectively deter criminals and thereby reduce the negative impacts that crime has on the business, its staff and customers.
From its inception, The Salvation Army has been known for its practical outworking of its Christian faith and, over the years, countless people in need have been helped, not only spiritually, but with practical support too. With the ethos of “Heart to God and Hand to Man”, Shildon Salvation Army continues to offer this practical support of helping people in a variety of ways, including food parcels. This particular work is now being enhanced by a partnership
with The Durham Food Bank (Durham Christian Partnership), with food donated by the general public and volunteers “manning” the distribution centre.Food vouchers can be accessed from a variety of places including the CAB, Social Services and Job Centre Plus. They can be exchanged for food at Shildon Salvation Army (Cross Street – DL4 1PD) on Mondays between 2pm and 4pm, and Thursdays from 10am to 2pm.
Owner of Sweet Greetings Lynn Neilson (centre) with Neil Pearson (SDEA), PCSO Dan Blackwood, Andrew Walker (AAP Co-ordinator), PC Steve Brown and Sheilah Metcalfe (AAP Community Development Project Officer).

Invitations to apply for financial assistance are being extended by Shildon AFC Supporters’ Club after the successful launch of its weekly lottery draw. One of the main objectives of launching the lottery – alongside raising funds for the supporters’ club – was to set aside a fund for local good causes. The club is now ready to distribute the first tranche of funds and is asking local groups or individuals to put forward their ap-plications, detailing their funding requirements. A spokesperson for the committee said, “Now that the lottery has been running for a few months, we have been able to build up enough funds that we can now ask local groups to contact us with requests for assistance.“We are particularly keen to hear from smaller groups or individuals that may have been unsuc-cessful in applications to other funders, or who are looking for a small amount and are unsure about filling in complicated
funding application forms.“The fund is a small assistance scheme, with a maximum funding of £200 available to any one group or individual in a calendar year. Priority will be given to groups within Shildon, but other groups or indi-viduals within the locality are welcome to apply.“Decisions will be com-municated to groups or individuals within four weeks of an applica-tion being received. The Supporters’ Club Commit-tee's decisions are final.“A full list of terms and conditions will be made available on request and will soon be published on the Supporters’ Club website.”The Supporters Club lottery has been running since September 2013 and has already paid out over £1,500 in prize money, including a £950 jackpot prize, shared by Shildon residents Norman Nash and Vera Thornberry in November. Now the committee is making an additional £800 available to local good
causes and will periodi-cally distribute additional funding. Look out for an-nouncements on funding availability in future issues of the Crier.Anyone wishing to receive a funding application form should call Russell Henderson on 07538 789 464, or email [email protected] Supporters’ Club lottery costs £2 per ticket, with the draw taking place each week on Sunday evening during the half time break in the quiz night. Tickets are available from various outlets across the town: from Main Street News, the One Stop Shop on Byerley Road, Elm Road Club on a Friday night, The Grey Horse pub, Shildon Football Club on home match days, or from members of the Supporters’ Club. The quiz night takes place in the Dean Street club house and begins at 8pm. All are welcome to attend. (See page 8 for last week’s Lotto results).

This group is for anyone who has cancer or has finished their treatment, and for carers who look after someone with cancer. There will be guest speakers to explain what help and support there is available from such groups as Welfare Rights,
and MacMillan.Allison White, who has organised the support group said, “There is not enough support for people with cancer. I know because I have been there. People think that once you finish your treatment you are okay but that is not true. Some people just want someone to talk to outside their family”.If you would like further details contact Allison on 07762 258 696.

Police are appealing for information in connection with the theft of two 2.5 x 2.5 metre steel box section metal gates. The gates were stolen on Friday 24th January from a secure compound at the Weinerberger Brick Works in Eldon. It is likely that the gates
would have been trans-ported by vehicle from the site. Anyone who sighted a suspicious vehicle parked at the site on the date in question, or with intel-ligence concerning the persons responsible, are encouraged to contact Shildon NPT on 101.
Shildon Police wish to advise residents against unacceptable comments on public areas of social media sites. This follows an enquiry which resulted in a local
male being charged in connection with racist comments made on Facebook. The male has been charged and will be appearing at court in February.

Stephen Joseph Wright, of Dale Road, Shildon, pleaded not guilty to a charge of assault, oc-casioning actual bodily harm, when he appeared before magistrates at Newton Aycliffe recently. The Crown stated that, on the night of 9th February 2013, the Workingmen’s Club at Middleton-in-Tees-dale had been crowded
when Wright had knocked his female victim to the floor and proceeded to kick and stamp upon her upper body several times in an unprovoked attack. In defence, it was stated that Wright “denies properly the allegation” and concern was expressed that it was eleven months since the alleged assault had taken
place. “A lot of people were arrested that night but Wright was the only one charged,” said the de-fendant’s solicitor. Magistrates felt that the case was more appropri-ate for the Crown Court and the 23 year-old will now appear at Durham Crown Court on 12th February.

After a successful start to the XC season, Cameron Boyek returned to action in the Durham Cathedral relays on the 12th January.Cameron recorded the fastest time of the day as he completed his leg in a time of 9m 01s. He then followed this up with a change of surface on the 18th as he took to the boards at The Emeriates Arena, Glasgow. The change of surface did not affect the per-formance, as Cameron won the 1500m in a fine winter time of 3m 46.36 which places him 2nd in the National senior rankings.Saturday 25th January saw the Northern XC Championships take place at Knowsley, Merseyside.Among those taking on the challenge of competing in the gruelling conditions were Elizabeth Wood in the U20w. Elizabeth set an example for the rest of our members by finishing a creditable 45th in a time of 28m 17s.
The U13bs set off next as the heavens opened and Ryan Watson tackled the mud bath and driving rain with gusto to finish 65th in a time of 12m 56s. Next up, with conditions deteriorating by the minute, U15bs Cameron Stainsby (16m 06s) and Ethan Edwards (16m 16s) battled to the end where they recorded finishes of 81st and 89th from over 170 competitors.Chloe Fairclough has been a busy girl during January, on the 11th she tackled the 2.5k u11 course in the Bupa Great Winter run up in Edinburgh. Chloe finished an excellent 7th in 8m 44s and added Charlotte Purdue's autograph / race number to her collection of memorabilia. On the 19th Chloe took on the challenge of The Stockton Trail race over 2.6k at Cowpen Bewley and came 1st in her age group.Shildon Sprint group
continue to impress as they took to competition again at the Gateshead College Open. Scott Michael (7.29s) recorded a lifetime best performance as he came out top in the senior male group during the 60m sprint. 400m specialist Georgia Hirst (8.31s) also produced a lifetime best as she came down in distance in the U20w's 60m. While the U13gs Maddie Wells and Rachel Bennett truly excelled as they sped to not only lifetime bests, but also club record equalling runs, also over 60m. The girls competed in separate races but again proved inseparable as they both recorded times of 8.39s which cements their U.K. top 10 ranking.Hackworth Parkrun saw David Beadle finish as Shildons top runner as he was chased home by Ian Rudge, Gary Bainbridge and Shannon Ross.
