FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK

Hi Everyone,

This has been an exciting year and the clubs milestone of 35 years starting out with Australian Built HDT Commodores then the HSV range since 1988. However, this is all about to change, a real sadness exists with the Holden plant closing down on the 16th of October 2017 and the thought of never seeing another Australian built car. Then followed by the anticipation of what Holden will import from the US in the form of a muscle car with a Holden badge or whatever hopefully with a V8 motor.

We all know the face of the motoring industry is changing here in Australia and the real sticking point is there will be no car manufacturing industry here ever again. The only western country that does not manufacture a car, how could powers to be allow that to happen. Even Donald Trump, love him or hate him, sat down with the board of GM America and convinced them and gave them incentives not to move manufacturing from Detroit to Mexico. Is Donald Trump more passionate and patriotic regarding America and keeping American made than our pollies are about keeping Australian made. Obviously YES. Rest assured the HSV Owners Club Qld will continue embracing the past and adapting to the future. We have enjoyed 35 years of a great and passionate club and look forward to the next 20 years of encouraging and embracing the past and the future and moulding them together to create something spectacular as we have always done in the past. This can only be achieved with the passion that exists from the current members and be contagious encouraging new members into the future. Friday September 29th General Meeting Zupps Holden and HSV Aspley was hosted by Shane Spinks and his dedicated team at Aspley for the night. A huge thank you to Shane and Christelle for organizing the barbecue and having the HSV showroom set up for the meeting not to mention a number of stunning HSV’s displayed next to the showroom. Thanks to Zupps Holden and HSV Aspley and Shane for making the club members feel so welcome. It is always a joy to come to your well-presented showroom for a meeting. Sunday 2nd October Toowoomba All Holden day car show was again a fantastic day.A HUGE Thank you to all that attended, 31 cars in total on display including for the first time Mark Evans W1. The club won the best club display having lost it only once in 20+ years . Congratulations to the trophy winners on the day. The club display was a truly spectacular site and the cars on display were without a doubt some of the best in Australia celebrating the HDT and HSV over the years and preserving the many sensational models bring a walk down memory lane to the public. Again thank you to Ian for bringing the club trailer to Toowoomba and to Craig for organizing the display. The final events for the year are upon us and we look forward to the celebrations to come.November 10-12th - Coffs Harbour weekend with the QLD and NSW club. This is always a great weekend, dinners, cruise runs and a fantastic social weekend among HSV enthusiasts from both states. Still a couple of rooms available. To book, phone Opel Cove Resort Coffs Harbour and quote: You would like the special HSV Owners Club rate for the weekend.6 HSV Owners Club of Qld. Inc. Magazine November 2017

ALL HOLDEN DAY TOOWOOMBASATURDAY 30TH SEPTEMBER - SUNDAY 1st OCTOBER 2017

The Toowoomba all Holden Day was another immense success once again. While our numbers this year were down on previous years, our display topped all other clubs and I for one thought our display made the show. We had over half the people that were attending the show stay at Glenfield’s Motor Inn on the Saturday, which meant we were all able to have our cars all cleaned and tucked away by 2pm. We could all then sit back relax and have a few drinks before dinner. On Saturday night we all man-aged to pull ourselves together and head to Crystals Resurant that has recently been re-opened where the food and alcohol was enjoyed by all. Great meals.

At 5.45am Sunday morning Les & Peter lead the crew away from Redbank Plains so we could all meet up in one of the side streets in Toowoomba at 7am so we could all enter the grounds in model order. The number of cars in our club display was a bit down on previous years with having only 35 cars on display, but in saying that it was still very impressive taking up the length of the field and HSV flags flying.

Special thanks goes to Ian for organizing the club trailer to be towed to Toowoomba and of course thanks to all the members that helped set up and dismantle the display and for just being a part of the day. Yes it’s a car show but it’s also a great social weekend away, after all that’s why we have our pride and joys… to enjoy them on days like this.

Unfortunately, the skies were dark and stormy everywhere bar Willowbank and the event went ahead even though we knew numbers were going to be down. With the group bookings we unfortunately do not have the right to cancel close to the event and we fall into the hands of Willowbank Management and the weather. We ended up with 5 participants on the day and a big thank you to those 5 for braving the elements to turn up to run. As it turns out we did not get rain at Willowbank until late on Saturday night. Our 6th competitor Dave Schuurs had gearbox trouble after unloading his car and spent the next two hours getting it back on the truck to take it home. The joys of all things automotive and commiserations to Dave. The 5 remaining competitors had plenty of track time and as yet I have not worked out the final scoring as I am waiting on the time file from Willowbank Raceway to be able to calculate. However, I suspect the ladies are going to lead the way in 2017. We had our first ever Holden Trailblazer running and it pumped out 16.6 all day long which is quite amazing as a good time for a standard HDT VK or VL Group A started with a 15. The rest of the field drove more traditional steads. To protect ourselves financially and to actually be able to improve our drag race offerings in 2018 I am proposing thefollowing approach in 2018. This will be discussed at our next committee and then full club meeting.

Drags at WillowbankSaturday 14th October 2017

ProposalThat we participate in the normal test and tune offerings at Willowbank Raceway by publishing the date in advance and having our members just turn up on the day/night and nominate their times as they do now. Advantages• No financial risk to club• Participants will save $10 entry fee and spectators no change• Ability to have greater than 2 events per year• Spectators would have more variation in vehicles to watch• Longer session times and Friday and Wednesday nights as well as Saturday afternoons availableDisadvantages• Have to run with general population – I am sure we would still be able to run each other or like type vehicles so not lining up against say full on drag car with increased risk• Later session time – 4.30pm to 6.00m for scoring. Session time actually extends way beyond this• Unsure whether we could still get a time file from track management so may need participants to keep and hand in time slips We will be seeking feedback from members on the above at our next meeting. To all those that supported the two events in 2017 we thank you on behalf of the club management for your participation and support

Sprints at LakesideSaturday 11th November 2017Next and final Round for the year

Lakeside 12pm to 4.00pm as part of Lakeside open sprints program – Entry and fees direct to QR. For QR scoring please check their website. The major club trophy will be done using the regularity format again with trophies at the end of the year for first to third. We will also be issuing a trophy for fastest over the 4 events as well (scoring will be done on 3 out of 4). There will be at least 3*4 lap sessions plus passenger ride session at discretion of track management - time permitting. All entries will need to be made on line with payment to QR direct at current cost of $175 and you should enter early as the events fill up quickly. Other costs apart from running costs are QR AASA track licence of $65 per year or $30 per day. A timing device can be bought for $120.00 which will last for approx. 7 years or can be hired for $30 a day with an $80 deposit required with $50 refund upon return. Helmet hire is available for $5.00 a day. QR operates EFTPOS facilities at both tracks for Licence, Transmitter, and helmet hire. Participants should make themselves aware of safety equip-ment requirements by visiting QR website but in short it is helmet, long sleeve shirt, long pants and shoes. If running a full competition harness the club strongly recommends the use of a Hans type neck restraint.

Entries will need to be done via QR Website and you need to first register as a user then go to event date and QR will allocate you in a group on the day based on your time. Please email me when you have done this so I know who is coming. Entries will be on a first in first served basis and you should enter ASAP as events tend to be booked out and late entry may not see you make the cut. After June 2017 you will have to pay QR direct on line. Entrants should arrive at track at approx 11.45 for sign in with the drivers briefing normally taking place approximately 12.15pm with first groups on track around 1.00pm. Ex-pected finish time is 4.00pm. Prospective entrants should check the motorsport tab on our website to view handy tips for vehicle preparation for the sprints. If you want to race this is not the event for you. If you want to stretch your cars legs and improve your driving skills we would love to have you along. You should also be aware that your car is unlikely to be covered by com-prehensive insurance for any damage whilst on track.

Friday November 17th, the club has been invited to participate in the Ipswich Christmas Twilight Parade

through the CBD streets of Ipswich.

The magic of Christmas comes to town when the Ipswich Christmas Twilight Parade travels along the city

streets. The event signifies the start of the Christmas Season and brings the Ipswich community together for

an evening of fun and celebration.

This illuminated procession of colourful lights, glowing lanterns, Christmas Characters and imaginative floats will escort Santa into Ipswich City where he will join

Mayor Andrew Antoniolli at d’Arcy Doyle Place to turn on the magical Christmas lights.

We have limited spots for vehicles (up to around 30) available and at the same time are trying to spread the

Some Christmas lights inside and on the car will be required in order to participate, but this can be done very inexpensively and without sacrificing your pride

and joy and makes for a fantastic spectacle in a parade format.

The parade commences at 6:45pm – and concludes by 7:30pm. Final CRUISE and Marshalling times to be confirmed as we near the event and the organisers

confirm those times.

We are also planning to grab a bite to eat afterwards for those that wish to join us after the conclusion of the

parade. For anyone wishing to confirm their attendance to this

Friday evening, please contact Andrew Roberts on

Special InterestVL Group 3 Signature Series

The VL Group 3 was released just three months after the controversial Director and was one of the Post Holden/Brock era cars. As such, Brock was forced to buy his cars without the backing of the factory, which meant soaring prices for the consumer.

Due in part to the pricing and the Brock/Holden split, only 38 of the VL SS Group 3’s were built. All were Berlina based, white in colour (although there was one light blue, one burgundy one and even a red wagon) and featured the grey interior. Most of the vehicles sold were also fitted the three speed Trimatic gearbox as the Borg Warner T5 5 speed gearbox added a further $4455 to the price tag, making a Group 3 with Central locking worth $45108

Outside, the car featured the one piece grill, similar to the one used on the Director and Aero (but protrudes less than the Director and Aero ver-sion), LE side skirts, a new front bumper featuring 3 air inlets and a lower version of the Group A’s boot spoiler. Wheels were the familiar Aero’s but had the vanes machined into a curved feature.Of note is the fact that there was not a Holden Badge to be seen on these cars.

G’day fellow members,

I hope all members and their families are all well.

We had a great day in Toowoomba on Sunday the 1st October for the All Holden Day, plenty of cloud cover and a sneaky breeze eventually found us. Another quality club display, all the cars looked great. Congratulations to all the trophy winners.

There are some great club events coming up. Les has his Coffs Harbour weekend away, 10th-12th November, please contact Les if you’re interested. The track lads have a sprint day on the 11th November. Then we have an ‘Ipswich’ weekend coming up on the 17th-18th November. On Friday 17th it is the Ipswich Twilight Christmas parade, always a fun event. Grab some flashing lights or let your mind travel and deck your car out, always plenty of cheers from the crowd.

The next afternoon/evening we have our 35th anniversary dinner at the Workshops Rail Museum. This is a fantastic venue, if you love old brick buildings and large toys, this is the place for you.

We had four new members join us over the past month. Would you please extend a big HSVOCQ welcome to:David Hampton and his 2005 VZ Clubsport.Adam Dale and his 2010 VE3 Clubsport R8.Wayne Winton and his 2002 VX GTS Coupe.Dave Edmonds and his 2008 VE GTS.

Hope to see the new members getting involved and enjoying themselves. That’s all from me, just like getting an Aussie built family sedan.... goooone.See you at an event soon.
