SAFETY RULES &Safe Operation Practices for Ride=On Mowers

IMPORTANT: THIS CUTTING MACHINE IS CAPABLE OF AMPUTATINGHANDSAND FEETAND THROWING OBJECTS. FAILURETO OBSERVE THE FOLLOWING SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS COULD RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.

WARNING: in order to prevent ac-cidental starting when setting up,transporting, adjusting or making re=pairs, always disconnect spark plugwire and place wire where it cannotcontact spark plug.

WARNING: Do not coast down a hillin neutral, you may lose control of thetractor.

• Data indicates that operators, age 60 years and above,are involved in a large percentage of riding mower-re-lated injuries. These operators should evaluate theirability to operate the riding mower safely enough toprotect themselves and others from serious injury.

• Follow the manufacturer's recommendation for wheelweights or counterweights.

• Keep machine free of grass , leaves or other debrisbuild-up which can touch hot exhaust/engine partsand burn. Do not allow the mower deck to plow leavesor other debris which can cause build-up to occur.Clean any oil or fuel spillage before operating orstoring the machine. Allow machine to cool beforestorage.

WARNING: Tow only the attachmentsthat are recommended by and com-ply with specifications of the manu-facturer of your tractor. Use commonsense when towing. Operate only atthe lowest possible speed when on aslope. Too heavy of a load, while ona slope, is dangerous. Tires can losetraction with the ground and cause youto lose control of your tractor.

I. GENERAL OPERATION• Read, understand, and follow all instructions on the

machine and in the manual before starting.Do not put hands or feet near rotating parts or underthe machine. Keep clear of the discharge opening atall times.Only allow responsible adults, who are familiar with theinstructions, to operate the machine.Clear the area of objects such as rocks, toys, wire, etc.,which could be picked up and thrown by the blades.Be sure the area is clear of bystanders before operat-ing. Stop machine if anyone enters the area.Never carry passengers.Do not mow in reverse unless absolutely necessary. Al-ways look down and behind before and while backing.Never direct discharged material toward anyone. Avoiddischarging material against a wall or obstruction. Ma-terial may ricochet back toward the operator. Stop theblades when crossing gravel surfaces.Do not operate machine without the entire grass catcher,discharge guard, or other safety devices in place andworking.Slow down before turning.Never leave a running machine unattended. Alwaysturn off blades, set parking brake, stop engine, andremove keys before dismounting.Disengage blades when not mowing. Shut off engineand wait for all parts to come to a complete stop beforecleaning the machine, removing the grass catcher, orunclogging the discharge guard.Operate machine only in daylight or good artificiallight.Do not operate the machine while under the influenceof alcohol or drugs.Watch for traffic when operating near or crossing road-ways.Use extra care when loading or unloading the machineinto a trailer or truck.Always wear eye protection when operating machine.

II. SLOPE OPERATION

Slopes are a major factor related to loss of control andtip-over accidents, which can result in severe injury ordeath. Operation on all slopes requires extra caution. Ifyou cannot back up the slope or if you feel uneasy on it,do not mow it.

• Mow up and down slopes, not across.• Watch for holes, ruts, bumps, rocks, or other hidden

objects. Uneven terrain could overturn the machine.Tall grass can hide obstacles.

• Choose a low ground speed so that you will not haveto stop or shift while on the slope.

• Do not mow on wet grass. Tires may lose traction.Always keep the machine in gear when going downslopes. Do not shift to neutral and coast downhill.

• Avoid starting, stopping, or turning on a slope. If thetires lose traction, disengage the blades and proceedslowly straight down the slope.

• Keep all movement on the slopes slow and gradual.Do not make sudden changes in speed or direction,which could cause the machine to roll over.

• Use extra care while operating machine with grasscatchers or other attachments; they can affect thestability of the machine. Do no use on steep slopes.

• Do not try to stabilize the machine by putting your footon the ground.

• Do not mow near drop-offs, ditches, or embankments.The machine could suddenly roll over if a wheel is overthe edge or if the edge caves in.

Ill. CHILDRENTragic accidents can occur if the operator is not alert tothe presence of children. Children are often attracted tothe machine and the mowing activity. Never assume thatchildren will remain where you last saw them.• Keep children out ofthe mowing area and in the watchful

care of a responsible adult other than the operator.• Be alert and turn machine off if a child enters the

area.• Before and while backing, look behind and down for

small children.• Never carry children, even with the blades shut off. They

may fall off and be seriously injured or interfere withsafe machine operation. Children who have been givenrides in the past may suddenly appear in the mowingarea for another ride and be run over or backed overby the machine.

• Never allow children to operate the machine.• Use extra care when approaching blind corners, shrubs,

trees, or other objects that may block your view of achild.

IV. TOWING• Tow only with a machine that has a hitch designed for

towing. Do not attach towed equipment except at thehitch point.

• Follow the manufacturer's recommendation for weightlimits for towed equipment and towing on slopes.

• Never allow children or others in or on towed equip-ment.

• On slopes, the weight of the towed equipment maycause loss of traction and loss of control.

• Travel slowly and allow extra distance to stop.

V. SERVICESAFE HANDLING OF GASOLINE

To avoid personal injury or property damage, use extremecare in handling gasoline. Gasoline is extremely flammableand the vapors are explosive.• Extinguish all cigarettes, cigars, pipes, and other

sources of ignition.• Use only approved gasoline container.• Never remove gas cap or add fuel with the engine run- •

ning. Allow engine to cool before refueling.• Never fuel the machine indoors.• Never store the machine or fuel container where there

is an open flame, spark, or pilot light such as on a waterheater or other appliances.

• Never fill containers inside a vehicle or on a truck ortrailer bed with plastic liner. Always place containerson the ground away from your vehicle when filling.

• Remove gas-powered equipment from the truck or trailerand refuel it on the ground. If this is not possible, thenrefuel such equipment with a portable container, ratherthan from a gasoline dispenser nozzle.

• Keep the nozzle in contact with the rim of the fuel tank "or container opening at all times until fueling is complete.Do not use a nozzle lock-open device.

• If fuel is spilled on clothing, change clothing immedi-ately.

• Never overfill fuel tank. Replace gas cap and tighten •securely.

GENERAL SERVICE

• Never operate machine in a closed are.• Keep all nuts and bolts tight to be sure the equipment ,

is in safe working condition.• Never tamper with safety devices. Check their proper

operation regularly.• Keep machine free of grass, leaves, or other debris

build-up. Clean oil or fuel spillage and remove any fuel-soaked debris. Allow machine to cool before storing.

• If you strike a foreign object, stop and inspect themachine. Repair, if necessary, before restarting.

• Never make any adjustments or repairs with the enginerunning.

• Check grass catcher components and the dischargeguard frequently and replace with manufacturer's rec-ommended parts, when necessary.

• Mower blades are sharp. Wrap the blade or weargloves, and use extra caution when servicing them.

• Check brake operation frequently. Adjust and serviceas required.

• Maintain or replace safety and instruction labels, asnecessary.

KNOW YOUR GRASS CATCHERREAD THIS OWNER'S MANUAL AND SAFETY RULES BEFORE ASSEMBLING OR OPERATING YOUR GRASSCATCHER. Compare the illustrations with the carton contents to familiarize yourself with the parts before starting theassembly. Study the operating instructions and safety precautions thoroughly to insure proper functioning of your GrassCatcher and to prevent injury to yourself and others. Save this manual for future reference.

The operation of any tractor can result in foreign objects thrown into the eyes, which can result in severeeye damage. Always wear safety glasses or eye shields before starting your tractor and while mowing.We recommend a wide vision safety mask for over the spectacles or standard safety glasses.

NOTE: When right hand (R.H.) and left hand (L.H.) are mentioned in this manual, it means when you are seated on thetractor, in the operator's position.

CAUTION: BEFORE ASSEMBLING GRASS CATCHER TO TRACTOR:

• Depress clutch/brake pedal fully and set parking brake.

• Place gearshift/motion control lever in "NEUTRAL" position.

Place attachment clutch in "DISENGAGED" position.

Turn ignition key "OFF" and remove key.

• Make sure the blade and all moving parts have completely stopped.

• Disconnect spark plug wire from plug and place where it cannot come in contact with plug.

BAGGER SUPPORT ASSEMBLY MOUNTING COVER ASSEMBLY TO(See Fig. 1A)

Simply hang the support assembly on the bolts.

LOWER CHUTE = MOWER WITHMOUNTING TAB (See Fig. 4A)

Raise and hold deflector shield in upright position.Place slot in lower chute over mounting tab on mower andposition lower chute over mower opening as shown.Hook rear latch into flange hole on back of mower.Hook front latch into tab hole on front of mower.

If your tractor is equipped with gauge wheels on themower, then it will be necessary to hook the rear latchinto the hole in the R.H. gauge wheel bracket.

CAUTION: Do not remove deflectorshield from mower. Raise and holdshield when attaching lower chuteand allow it to rest on chute while inoperation.

LOWER CHUTE - MOWER WITHOUTMOUNTING TAB (See Fig. 4B)1. Lower mower to its lowest cutting position.NOTE: If equipped, remove mulch cover from mower andstore in a safe place.2. With your right hand, raise and hold deflector shield in

upright position.3. With your left hand, hold lower chute as shown and

position lower rear edge of chute between gauge wheelbracket tab and mower housing, then carefully releasedeflector shield and hook rear latch to mower.

4. Raise deflector shield and align "B" on lower chuteextended edge with "B" on mower housing.

5. With your right hand, push firmly on the lower chuteuntil the extended edge slides under the deflector shieldand along side the hinge bracket as shown.

6. With chute in proper position, hold the chute securely,so it does not move, while hooking the front latch tothe mower.

NOTE: While hooking the latches, the deflector shield maytry to push the chute away from the mower opening. It isimportant to hold the chute in position while hooking thelatches to the mower.

If your tractor is equipped with gauge wheels on themower, then it will be necessary to hook the rear latchinto the hole in the R.H. gauge wheel bracket.

UPPER CHUTE (See Figs. 5A & 5B)

1. Lower mower to its lowest cutting position.2. Assemble upper chute by inserting curved end into

hole in back of cover.

NOTE: Handle carefully so as not to damage full bag indi-cator.

3. Push in and turn upper chute until it is in line with lowerchute.

4. Align the bosses on lower chute with alignment slotson upper chute and slide together.

5. Secure with rubber latch by hooking hole in latch overlatch pin.

TIPS FOR iMPROVED BAGGINGOPERATION:

Follow the mower operation instructions in your tractorowner's manual.

When operating your grass catcher on a lawn where grassand leaf bagging equipment has not been used, you arepicking up thatch and debris that has accumulated for longperiods of time. The amount collected and the total timeof operation may be greater than you will experience withregular use of your grass catcher.

• Always run throttle at full speed when bagging.• Select a gear low enough to give good mower cutting

performance, good quality cut and good baggingperformance.

NOTE: It may be necessary to overlap width of cut to suityour conditions.

• If grass is extremely tall, it should be mowed twice. Thefirst time relatively high, the second time to desiredheight.

• Use left hand side of mower for trimming.• Plastic trash bags can be inserted inside grass catcher

containers for ease of debris disposal. To remove theplastic trash bags when full:a. Disengage blades, shift into neutral, engage the

parking brake and stop the engine.b. Raise seat. Unlatch and raise cover.

c. Remove one container at a time by graspingcontainer handles and pulling toward the rear, offof the tube rails.

d. With the container resting on the ground, closeand secure the top of the plastic lawn bag.

e. Tip the container on its side and slide the filled bagfrom the container.

f. Install a new plastic lawn bag with the edges of thebag draped over upper lip of the container.

g. Repeat for other containers.h. Reinstall containers making sure right container

overlaps left container at center supports.j. Close cover and secure latches over center support

tubes.

• Avoid cutting wet grass or in the morning while the dewis still heavy. Grass clippings collected under theseconditions tend to be sticky and adhere to the walls ofthe flow path causing clogging.

• Your bagger is equipped with a full bagger indicator.Movement of the wheel increases as the bags fill. Thewheel will be spinning fastest just before the bags fillcompletely. When the wheel stops, it indicates that thebags are full and the chutes have become clogged.

NOTE: To help prevent clogging of chutes, check/emptybags when the wheel is spinning fast. Experience will teachyou the best time to empty the bags.

Care should be taken not to damage the parts and thatthe wheel spins freely at the beginning of each use.

• If the grass catcher fails to pick up cut grass or leaves,it is an indication that clogging has occurred in thesystem or that the grass catcher containers are full.Usually this is indicated by the stopped movement ofthe full bagger indicator.a. Disengage blades, shift into neutral, engage the

parking brake and stop the engine.Raise seat. Unlatch and raise cover.

b.

- Slide out containers and dispose of clippings.

Replace containers, close cover, and latch.

Unlatch chutes and check for clogging.Remove all debris in chutes.

Reassemble and latch chutes

C. Checkto insure full bagger indicator has not becomeclogged.

- The air passage hole must be clear of debris.Gently insert asmall twig or wire into passagewayto clear.

CAUTION

• Do not operate mower with grass catcherpartially installed.

• Disengage blades and stop engine beforeleaving tractor seat to empty containers,unclogging chutes, etc.

• Close cover before starting.

• Disengage mower when crossing drivewaysor gravel surfaces and other areas wherethrown objects could be a hazard.

• Do not attempt to vacuum up cans or otherpotentially hazardous projectiles.

GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONSAlways observe safety rules when performing any main-tenance.

• Before each use check for loose fasteners.

• Clean unit thoroughly after each use.

BLADE CARE

For best results mower blades must be kept sharp. Replacebent or damaged blades.

• See BLADE CARE instructions in your tractor owner'smanual.

STORAGEWhen grass catcher is to be stored for a period of time,clean it thoroughly, remove all dirt, grass, leaves, etc. Storein a clean, dry place.

A CAUTION: Do not leave grass in bag=get containers. Empty containers aftereach use and before storing. Failureto do so may result in spontaneouscombustion which could develop intoa fire.

A CAUTION: BEFORE PERFORMING ANYMAINTENANCE, SERVICE OR ADJUST=MENTS:

• Depress clutch brake pedal fully andset parking brake.

• Place gearshift/motion control lever in"NEUTRAL" position.

• Place clutch control in "DISENGAGED"position.

• Turn ignition key to "OFF" position.

• Make sure blades and all moving partshave completely stopped.

• Disconnect spark plug wire(s) fromspark plug(s) and place wire where itcannot come in contact with plug.

A CAUTION: Grass catcher componentsare subject to wear, damage and dete=flotation, which could expose movingparts or allow objects to be thrown.Frequently check components andreplace with manufacturer's recommen=deal parts, when necessary.

One Year Full Warranty on Craftsman Grass CatcherWhen assembled, used and maintained according to the owner's manual instructions, if this grass catcher failsdue to a defect in material or workmanship within one year from the date of purchase, RETURN IT TO ANYSEARS STORE OR SEARS PARTS & REPAIR CENTER OR OTHER CRAFTSMAN OUTLET IN THE UNITEDSTATES FOR FREE REPAIR (or replacement if repair proves impossible).• This warranty does not include the bagging blades, which are expendable parts.• This warranty is void if this grass catcher is used for commercial or rental purpose.• This warranty applies only while this product is used in the United States.

I. FUNCIONAMIENTO GENERAL

il. FUNCIONAMIENTO EN PENDIENTES

Las pendientes son el mayor factor de accidentes relativos a laperdida de control y vuelco, que pueden causar severas heridaso muerte. El funcionamiento en pendientes requiere una atenci6nextra. Si no es posible hacer marcha atr&s en una pendiente o site sientes incomodo, no la cortes.• Cortar hacia arriba y abajo de una pendiente, no de modo

horizontal.

• Poner atenciones a los hoyos, las raices, los buttos, las piedrasu otros objetos escondidos. Et terreno irregular puede volcarla m&quina. La hierba atta puede esconder obst&culos.

• Escoger una vetocidad de marcha baja de modo que no seanecesario pararse o cambiar estando en una pendiente.

• No cortar la hierba mojada. Las ruedas pueden perder trac-ci6n.

Poner siempre una marcha cuando se est& en pendientes.No poner en punto muerto e ir cuesta abajo.

• Evitar arrancar, pararse o girar en una pendiente. Si las rue-das pierden tracci6n, desconectar las cuchitlas y procederdespacio cuesta abajo en la pendiente.

• Mantener todo los movimientos en tas pendientes lentos ygradual. No hacer cambios repentinos de vetocidad o direc-ci6n, ya que pueden causar et escape de la m&quina.

• Poner la m&xima atenci6n cuando la m&quina funciona concaptadores de hierba u otros dispositivos enganchados;pueden afectar la estabilidad de la m&quina. No usar enpendientes empinados.

• No intentar estabilizar la m&quina poniendo et pie en et ter-reno.

• No cortar cerca de bajadas, cunetas y oriltas. Las m&quinapuede volcarse improvisamente si una rueda est& en el bordeo se hunde.

MANIPULACION SEGURA DE LA GASOLINA

Para evitar heridas personales o daflos alas cosas, poner elma.ximo cuidado a la hora de manipular la gasotina. La gasolinaes extremamente inflamable y los vapores son explosivos.

Apagar todos los cigarritlos, cigarros, pipas y otras fuentesde ignici6n.

Usar s6to contenedores para gasotina aprobados.

Nunca quitar et tap6n de la gasotina o afladir carburantecon el motor en marcha, dejar enfriar et motor antes detabastecimiento de la gasotina.

Nunca abastecer la m_.quina al interior de un local.

Nunca guardar ta m_.quina o et contenedor det carburantedonde haya una llama abierta, chispas o una luz piloto comoun calentador de agua u otros dispositivos.Nunca Ilenar los contenedores al interior de un vehiculo o enuna caravana o cami6n recubiertos con un forro de pl_.stico.Cotocar siempre los contenedores en et terreno lejos detvehiculo cuando se esta. llenando.

Quitar el equipo de gas del cami6n o caravana y abastecerloen et terreno. Si no es posible, abastecer dicho equipo conun contenedor port_.til, m_.s bien que de un surtidor de gaso-lina.

Mantener la boquilta a contacto del borde del dep6sito decarburante o la abertura det contenedor durante toda laoperaci6n de abastecimiento. No utilizar un dispositivo conboquitla cerrada-abierta.

Si se vierte carburante sobre la ropa, cambiarse la ropainmediatamente.

Nunca Ilenar el dep6sito ma.s de Io debido. Volver a colocaret tap6n det gas y cerrar de modo firme.

OPERACIONES DE SERVIClO GENERALES

• Nunca hacer funcionar la m_.quina en un _.rea cerrada.

Mantener todas las tuercas y pernos apretados para asegu-rarse de que trabaja en condiciones seguras.

• Nunca modificar los dispositivos de seguridad. Controlar sucorrecto funcionamiento regularmente.

CONSEJOS PARA MEJORAR EL FUN-ClONAMIENTO DEL CAPTADOR:Seguir las instrucciones de funcionamiento det cortacesped enet manual del usuario det tractor.

Cuando se pasa et captador de hierba por un cesped en et queno se ha usado por mucho tiempo el equipo para recoger hierbay hojas, se recoger&n pajas y escombros que se han acumutadodurante mucho tiempo. La cantidad recogida y el tiempo total defuncionamiento ser&n menores si se usa et captador de hierbaregutarmente.

Mantener siempre la maneta a la m&xima vetocidad cuandose recoge con et captador.

Seteccionar un engranaje Io bastante bajo para tener unresultado 6ptimo de corte con et cortacesped y un buenresuttado de recogida.

NOTA: Puede ser necesario superponer la anchura det cortepara adaptarse a las propias condiciones.

Si la hierba es extremamente alta, habr& que cortarla dosveces. La primera vez retativamente alta, la segunda vezhasta la altura deseada.

Usar el lado izquierdo det cortacesped para desbastar.

Es posibte cotocar botsas de pl&stico para labasura al interiorde los contenedores del dep6sito de hierba para facilitar laetiminaci6n de los residuos. Para quitar las bolsas de pt&sticopara la basura cuando est&n llenas:

a. Desenganchar las hojas, poner en neutro, poner etfrenode estacionamiento y apagar et motor.

b. Levantar et asiento. Quitar et gancho y levantar latapa.

c. Quitar un contenedor a la vez asiendo las manijas detcontenedor y tirando hacia la parte trasera, fuera de lasguias det tubo.

d. Con el contenedor apoyado en et suelo, cerrar y fijar laparte superior de la bolsa del cesped de pt&stico.

e. Volcar el contenedor sobre su lado y extraer la bolsaIlena det contenedor.

f. Instalar una nueva bolsa de cesped de pt&stico con losbordes de ta bolsa ptegados sobre et labio superior detcontenedor.

g. Repetir para los otros contenedores.

h. Volvera instalar los contenedores asegur&ndose de queet contenedor derecho cubra et contenedor izquierdo etlos soportes centrales.

j. Cerrar la tapa y fijar los ganchos sobre los tubos desoporte centrales.

Evitar cortar hierba mojada o por la maflana mientras et rociotodavia es pesada. La hierba recogida en estas condicionestiende a ser pegajosa y adherir a las paredes det tubo depaso causando obstrucciones.

Tu saco est& dotado de un indicador de saco Ileno. Etmovimiento de ta rueda aumenta mientras las bolsas vanIlen&ndose. La rueda girar& m&s r&pidamente justo antes deque las bolsas se Ilenen comptetamente. Cuando la ruedase para, indica que las bolsas est&n tlenas y los tubos est&nobstruidos.

NOTA: Para ayudar a prevenir la obstrucci6n de los tubos, hayque controtar y/o vaciar las bolsas cuando ta rueda gira r&pidam-ente. Con ta experiencia se aprender& cu&l es et momento idealpara vaciar las botsas.

Hay que tener cuidado a no daflar las partes y que la ruedagire libremente al principio de cada utitizaci6n.

Si et captador no Iogra recoger la hierba cortada o las hojas,esto indica que el sistema est& atascado o que los contene-dotes det captador de hierba est&n tlenos. Normalmente estose indica a traves de la parada det movimiento det indicadorde bolsa Ilena.

a. Desenganchar las hojas, poner en neutro, poner et frenode estacionamiento y apagar el motor.

Levantar et asiento. Quitar et gancho y levantar latapa.

Extraer los contenedores y echar Io que se ha re-cogido.

Volver a colocar los contenedores, cerrar la tapa y etgancho.

b. Desenganchar los tubos y controlar si hay obstruccio-nes.

Controtar que et indicador de la bolsa Ilena no esteobstruido.

El orificio para et paso del aire tiene que estar librede residuos. Introducir con cuidado una ramita o unalambre pequeflo en et paso para desobturar.

No hacer funcionar el cortac6sped conel dep6sito de hierba parcialmenteinstalado.

Desenganchar las hojas y apagar el too=tot antes de abandonar el asiento deltractor para vaciar los contenedores,desobstruir los tubos, etc.

• Cerrar la tapa antes de empezar.

• Desconectar el cortac6sped cuandose cruzan caminos para los cocheso superficies con grava y otras _reasdonde objetos pueden salir disparadosy representar un peligro.
