Be sure mower is tevel and area around oilfill is clean.• Remove engine oil cap w/dipstick and ftil tothe full line on the dipstick.• Use 20 ozs, of oil. For type and grade of oilto use, see =ENGINE" in Maintenance sectionof this manual.° Pour oil slowly, Do not over tilt_° Check o11level before each use. Add oi! ifneeded. RII to full line on dipstick.• To read proper level, tighten engine oi! capeach time.

° Reinstall engine oil cap and tighten.• Change the oil after every 25 hours ofoperation or each season. You may need tochange the oil more often under dusty, dirtyconditions.

ADD GASOLINE* Fill fuel tank. Use fresh, clean, regularunleaded gasoline wilh a minimum of 87octane. Do not mix oil with gasolin& Pur,.chase fuel in quantities that can be used within30 days to assure fuel freshness.IMPORTANT" When operating intemperatures below 32°F(0°C), use fresh, clean winter grade gasoline to help insuregood cold weather starting_WARNING; Experience indicates that alcoholblended fuels (called gasohol or using ethanolor methanol) can attract moisture which leadsto separation and formation of acids duringstorage. Acidic gas can damage the fuelsystem of an engine while in storage. To avoidengine problems, the fuel system should beemptied before storage of 30 days or longer,,Drain the gas tank, start the engine and let itrun until the fuel lines and carburetor areempty. Use fresh fuel next season. SeeStorage Instructions for additional information.Never use engine or carburetor cleanerproducts In the fuel tank or permanentdamage may occur.CAUTION; Fill to bottom of gas tank fillerneck. TO START ENGINE

= To start a cold engine, push primer five (5)times before trying to start. Use a firm push,This step is not usual_/necessary whenstarting an engine which has already run for afew minutes.

° Hold operator presence conlrol bar down tothe handle.

• Turn electric start key clockwise to crankengine,IMPORTANT: Do not crank engine more thanfive continous seconds between each time youtry to start. Walt 5 to 10 seconds between echattempt.= To start engine using the auxiliarystarter handle, foltow the steps above.

Page 9: Owner's Manual CRRFTSMRNoSears rotary walk-behind power lawn mowers conform to the safely standards of theAmerican National Standards Instilute and the U,S, Consumer Product Safety

Exchange the use of the start key forstarter handle, Pull starter handle quickly.Do not allow starter rope to snap back.• To stop engine, release operatorpresence control bar°NOTE: In cooler weather it may benecessary to repeat priming steps. Inwarmer weather over priming maycause flooding and engine will notstart, tf you do flood engine wait a fewminutes before attempting to start anddo not repeat priming steps,

MOWING TIPS

• Under certain conditions, such as very tallgrass, it may be necessary to raise theheight of cut to reduce pushing effort and tokeep from overloading the engine andleaving clumps of grass clippings.

= For extremely heavy cutting, reduce thewidth of cut and raise the rear of the lawnmower housing one (1) wheel adjustersettinghigher than the front for betterdischarge of grass.

o When using a rear d_scharge lawn mower inmoist, heavy grass, clumps of cut grassmay not enter the grass catcher. Reduceground speed (pushing speed) and/or runthe lawn mower over the area a secondtime.

• tf a trail of grass clippings is left on the dghtside of a rear discharge lawn mower, mowin a clockwise direction with a small ovedapto collect the clippings on the next pass.

, Keep top of engine around slarter clear andclean of grass clippings and chaff. This willhelp engine air flow and extend engine life.

• Pores in cloth grass catchers can becomefilled with dirt and dust with use andcatchers will collect less grass. To preventthis, regularlyhose catchers off with waterand let dry before using.

MULCHING MOWING TIPS

IMPORTANT: For best performance, keepmower housing free of built-up grass andtrash. See "Cleaning" in Maintenance sectionof thismanual.

- The special mulching blade wil! recur thegrass clippings many times and reducethem in size so that as they fall onto thelawn they will disperse into the grass andnotbe noticed, Also, the mulched grass wiltbiedegrade quickly to provide nutrients forthe lawno Always mulch with your highestengine (blade) speed as this will provide thebest recutting acl_on of the blades.

• Avoid cutting your lawn when it is wet° Wetgrass tends to form Clumps and interfereswith the mulching action. The best time tomow your lawn is the early aftemoon_ Atthistime the grass has dried and the newlycut area will not be exposed to the directsun,

• For best results, adjust the lawn mowercutting height so that the lawn mower cutsoff only the top one-third of the grass blades. If the lawn is overgrown itwilt be necessaryto raise the height of cut to reduce pushingeffort and to keep from overloading theengine and leaving clumps of mulchedgrass_ For extremely heavy mulching, reduce your width of cut by overlappingpreviously cut path and mow stowiy_

• Certain types of grass and grass conditionsmay require that an area be mulched asecond time to completely hide theclippings, When doing a second cut, mowacross or perpendicular to the first cut path.

• Change your cutting pattern from week toweek. Mow north to south one week thenchange to east to west the next week. Thiswill help prevent matting and graining of thetawno

ENGINEFUEL SYSTEM

IMPORTANT: It is important to prevent gumdeposits from forming inessential fuel systemparts such as carburetor, fuel filter, fuel hose ortank during storage. Also, experience indicatesthat alcohol blended fuels (called gasohoi orusing ethanol or methanol) can attractmoisture which leads to separation andformation of acids during storage. Acidic gascan damage the fuel system of an enginewhile in storage.,, Drain the fue__ank.• Start the engine and let it run until the fuel

lines and carburetor are empty,• Never use engine or carburetor cleaner

products in the fuel tank or permanentdamage may occur.

• Use fresh fuel next season,

NOTE: Fuel stabilizer is an acceptablealternative in minimizing the formation of fuelgum deposits during storage. Add stabilizer togasoline in fue! tank or storage container.Always follow the mix ratio found on stabilizercontafner. Run engine at least 10 minutesafter adding stabilizer to allow the stabilizer toreach the carburetor. Do not drain the gastank and carburetor if using fuel stabilizer.ENGINE OILDrain oil (with engine warm) and replace withclean engine oil. (See "ENGINE" in theMaintenance section of this manual).CYUNDER• Remove spark plug_• Pour one ounce (29 rot) of oil through spark
