When I took on the position to be the editor of the 2008, 30th Anni-versary Owen Wister Review, I remember receiving an email very
early on from a previous editor. After asking a minor question concerning the publication, he offered, almost as a sidenote, his amazement that the OWR was still going, and going strong.
Every day I worked on this issue with my staff, I sat at my desk, where, arranged chronologically, almost every back-issue of the OWR rests. The evolution is apparent—from the earliest issues, averaging thirty or so pages of black-and-white-only content, to the thicker, more brightly colored issues of the past few years. I had flipped through them many times before, mostly to get new design ideas, but after receiving this email, I went over the stack of old OWRs with a new sense of curiosity and nostalgia.
Thirty years of western poetry, art, prose, essays, interviews, and photographs, all packaged in the best books that students could make in their day...it’s impressive. Certainly, each of them deserves a nod of respect for having the gumption to publish artistic work that so few seem to acknowledge.
In many ways I must agree with the sentiment of that once-editor. The odds are not in favor of a small, literary and arts magazine being published in Wyoming. The market for fiction is no good in this country, and I hear the market for poetry is even worse. And I wouldn’t say that the markets for art and photography are any better—otherwise, I imagine, more of us would be making a living taking pictures off our back porches.
But, thirty years later and here we are, as good as ever, a testament to the lasting power of art that many of us still believe is worth working for.
So, I would like to thank you, the reader. You make this possible, and without you, the Owen Wister Review could not have lasted thirty years.
I hope you enjoy the book that my staff and I have worked hard on to put together. It includes the beautiful and enjoyable work of many artists, writers, poets, and photographers.
I also hope that with a little luck I will one day, a long time from now, be able to congratulate a young student on being the editor of the Owen Wister Review.
