Favelas in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Life in Rio de Janeiro’s favelas, the urban slums that stretch out around Brazil’s second-largest city, is hard for the people who live there. Home to almost 1.4 million people, about 22% of the city’s population, the favelas of Rio (pictured below) have a reputation as one of the most dangerous places in the world. The statistics support their notoriety: 33,000 people were murdered in Rio between 2007 and 2013, and 5,412 were killed in encounters with the police.
In the lead up to the Football World Cup it took just 20 minutes for the security forces (pictured above) to take over the Manguinhos slum in the predawn raid involving 1,300 police. They were assisted by helicopters hovering overhead and armoured personnel carriers that ploughed through road obstacles set up in the narrow streets. No shots were fired, but three people were arrested. Police said that five alleged drug crime bosses that had fled to a nearby favela were killed on Saturday. The two favelas, home to 70,000 people, are located six miles from downtown Rio.
