The church has no walls, and it is resilient and enduring through the grace of Christ.

While the COVID-19 crisis forces our FPC Franklin community to temporarily physically separate, it presents a hopeful opportunity to come together in new and unique ways. One such way is a digital devotional booklet from our congregation as a faithful collective response to God's grace as we all journey through this uncertain time together. Responding to God’s grace through worship, study, and service.

Grace and Peace,

“Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, just as it is well with your soul.”

This is how the Third Letter of John begins, and it is my greeting for you today. As we continue navigating this

unique time of social distancing, I am praying that all is well with your health and your soul.

With working from home or simply being home more, it is easy to move less and eat more, to find yourself

watching more news than necessary, and to worry more than pray. Self-care is a buzz word right now, but I believe

it encompasses all parts of our life. So, how are you caring for yourself these days? It is important to periodically

make space for a self-inventory and ask yourself how you are caring for your body, your mind, and your spirit as

each part is vital to your overall wellbeing.

Many of us struggle with finding balance with such a wide array of emotions. Life has felt like a roller-coaster for

me lately. One moment I am consumed with grief for our world and the next I am filled with gratitude to have

unexpected family time. How do we manage our emotional extremes and care for ourselves?

• Take a walk: If you are able, get outside every day to walk or at least breathe in the fresh air and thank God for

creation.

• Phone a friend: If you are feeling lonely, call someone you know. They are probably experiencing similar

feelings and would love to talk to you.

• Spend time with God: Make space to talk and listen to God through prayer, meditation, reading, or whatever

works well for you.

• Practice Gratitude: Each day name at least one thing for which you are grateful. Practicing gratitude can

immediately lift our spirits and create joy.

• Request a Stephen Minister: Talking to someone outside of your family can be helpful. We have Stephen

Minsters ready to listen to you and journey alongside you during this time. Contact Stephen Leader Judi Arnold

([email protected]) or one of the pastors to learn more.

• Reach out to a mental health professional: When needed, they are a gift from God, and many are available for in-person or telecare visits. Here are a couple of counseling centers websites: https://insightcounselingcenters.org/ or https://refugecenter.org/.

Contrary to some beliefs, self-care is not selfish. Caring for yourself is a sign of compassion for you and others.

Caring for yourself allows you to then better care for others. I encourage you to do at least one thing each day to

care for yourself. Remember your church family loves you and is here for you, so reach out to one another. We are

the body of Christ and are praying with and for one another.

Be well, Anne

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

Summer Series

Beginning May 31 and going through August 2, Pastor Chris will be leading an adult Sunday school class on Zoom and preaching a series of sermons on the theme, “The Resilient Church.”

We are all learning these days what it takes to be resilient in the midst of significant change. The pandemic affecting the world has created major disruptions in the way we live. These disruptions have caused grief and pain for many. We are all being thrust into the kind of circumstance that calls for resilience, both as individuals, and as a church.

We will be reading and discussing two books. The first is “Weathering the Storm: Simple Strategies for Being Peaceful and Prepared,” by Tracy W. Mehr-Muska. Resilience enables us not only to survive adversity, but to be transformed by it. This book offers simple and proven strategies to develop resilience that will be of enormous benefit to anyone who is yearning to feel more peaceful and prepared. Tracy is a Coast Guard veteran, a Presbyterian pastor, and interfaith chaplain. This book promises to help all of us as we learn together how, by God’s grace, we can respond to this crisis with resilience. We will read and discuss this book in June.

In July, the emphasis will shift to the practices in the faith and in the church that ground us in ancient traditions that are ever-new in each generation. Especially as we walk through these days of crisis, our congregational resilience is surely grounded in those practices which have nourished and led followers of Christ through all the ages. We will be reading “Being Christian: Baptism, Bible, Eucharist, Prayer,” by Rowan Williams. Williams served as the 104th Archbishop of Canterbury from 2002-2012, and is currently the Chancellor of University of South Wales. This book is an exploration of the essential elements of the Christian life, those simple and recognizable things that make you realize that you are part of a Christian community. Part of what makes Christian communities resilient in times of crisis is a deepening reflection on these basics. We will spend the month of July joining Williams in this reflection.

These books are available on Amazon or wherever you purchase books. It is not necessary for you to have read the books to participate in the class discussion. All are welcome.

Pastor Chris will preach in June and July on the themes present in the books, bringing them into conversation with relevant biblical texts.

Join us this summer and let us embrace the call of these times for resilience.

Prayers for NaCoMe

We are saddened but admire the decision to suspend all summer camps. FPC is supporting by paying all the half fees of previously registered campers, $4,800.00. Please continue to pray for the camp director, Ryan Moore, and staff who continue to work for the improvement of NaCoMe. We had several high school students slated to be on Summer Staff and/or serve as Counselors In Training, we are especially praying for them: Brian Keener, Jack Hoeffler, and Emma Sower were going to be Counselors In Training and Julie Keener, Cara Moyers, Emily Oldham, Libbey Roumen, and Olivia Anderson were going to be counselors.

Compassion Camp: Be Loved. Be Kind. Be You.

Wednesdays in July for Everyone!

Activities provided for individuals and families on the FPC Grounds and at-home/virtual VBS type activities too!

The theme is compassion for others, ourselves, and the world.

Let us know if you need help connecting for Sunday School!

Red Cross Blood Drive RECAP

Thank You Blood Donors!

On Sunday, May 10, 2020, FPC-Franklin hosted a Red Cross Blood Drive in honor of Darcie Cross and 39 units of blood were collected (the highest number of units ever collected at an FPC blood drive). These 39 units will save the lives of up to 117 people!

Thank you to those who donated or attempted to donate at this drive! Be sure to add the next blood drive, scheduled for September 27, 2020 to your calendar!

Don Bittick and Connie Bond

Thank You from Darcie Cross

This note is to say thank you to my friends at FPC for the successful blood drive held on May 10. I am truly humbled that it was dedicated in my honor. What a wonderful and important event!

I’ve always heard that donors provide the gift of life, but I never expected to be the recipient. Since my battle with leukemia began last fall, I’ve had nearly 50 transfusions of red blood and/or platelets. These donations have been a critical part of my treatment and have given me a chance to hope for continued healing. I am grateful beyond words for this gift.

Many, many thanks to Connie Bond, Don Bittock, my husband Rick, the Red Cross and the rest of the team who planned this event. I’m told that they achieved the largest turnout of any FPC blood drive to date – that is incredible! And of course, I can never express enough thanks to the donors who literally give of themselves to help patients like me…this is truly God working in the world through His people.

With sincere appreciation, Darcie Cross

How we’re giving as a church:

• Hard Bargain—Paid for a week of meals for residents in the Hard Bargain Neighborhood • Red Cross Blood Drive—Biggest donation yet, with 39 units! • April 2NDSAT—Wrote notes of encouragement to essential workers across the community • May 2NDSAT—GraceWorks food drive all month long • Friends Life—The Mission Committee wrote notes to the entire Friends Life staff offering encouragement • Meals on Wheels—Continuing our monthly delivery of meals as a vital meal source • FPC has also prepaid all its mission partner donations for the year in an act of love & support for their work.

Hear of a way we can give as a community of faith during this time? Email your idea to [email protected].

Blackberry Jam

The Blackberry Jam is moving online! Each year, FPC supports Hard Bargain’s annual fundraiser, a fun music event for the whole family. This year’s event will be held virtually on June 27. More information is to come! www.theblackberryjam.com

Tornado relief update

The greater Nashville area has gone through a series of challenges this semester, including the March tornado. As a church community, we believe it’s important to continue to remember those who lost homes and loved ones during this terrible storm. We continue to monitor ways we can support our neighbors who are still recovering in this season. We pray for safety and health in this uncertain time, and we thank everyone who donated time, money, and resources already to supporting tornado victims. We are particularly grateful to all the community organizations who have offered their assistance during this time, including The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, The Community Resource Center, Hands On Nashville, Gideon’s Army, and many others. We hope as a church community to be able to take small groups to volunteer together once it is safe to gather in person. If you have ideas for how FPC can continue supporting tornado victims either now or in the future, email [email protected].

Senior Week

Thank you to Leanne Hoeffler, Anne Keener, Shawn Raines, Jennifer Sower and Margaret Whiteside for coordinating such a special senior week. Thanks to Dale Roos for helping us with our yard signs. We encourage you to drive through the church parking lot where you will be able to see all the yard signs with our seniors’ names and photos. We are so proud of the class of 2020.

The class of 2020: Olivia Anderson, Emily Annette Bechtel, Mason Alan Blackburn, John Martin Boyette, Bailey Dvorak, Neeley Grisham, Spencer Campbell Jones, Margaret Cate McCaleb, Jenna Ruth Mitchell, Cara Alayne Moyers, Emily Grace Oldham, Jack Lappin Pianta, Chase Michael Reimer, Libbey Roumen, and William Drake Stanfill, III.

Please make sure you are signed up for the youth ministry’s weekly e-mail through mailchimp to make sure you get all the latest updates regarding summer activities. We are including a survey to hear about what we can do that would be most helpful to youth and families. Our main weekly meeting will be at 6 PM on Wednesdays (when we would usually go to dinner together). In place of summer Sunday school, we are hoping to start a movie/book club over the summer. You can answer our survey to express your interest and let us know what books/movies you would most enjoy. While we are unable to travel for our usually summer trips, we will be keeping an eye out for ways that we can safely serve our local area.

The session of FPC has adopted two documents to guide our community as we prayerfully make decisions about reopening. There is the full document and an accompanying abbreviated document that distills the work of the

full document. You will note that we are currently in the “Safer at Home” phase, and we anticipate four additional phases on the way to full reopening. The ReOpen Task Force of the Session (Don Arnold, Chuck

Cairatti, Claire Crunk, Katie Gottlieb, and Robin Pulliam, along with new member Brent Sower) will work closely each week to determine which phase we are moving into and communicate that with the congregation. The

Session and staff will also be working together along with the Sessional committees to implement the reopening.

We invite you to utilize the outside spaces around FPC to experience worship with your families or on your own throughout the week.

Responding to God’s grace through worship, study, and service.

THANK YOU NOTES Thank you for your generous contribution of $250 to My Friend's House Family &

Children's Services on March 5, 2020. Our organization is successful due in large part

to individuals and organizations like you, walking alongside us in support of our

mission of serving at-risk boys who need a secure and structured home that provides

time for healing as well as services to help boys grow into self-sufficient members of

our community.

Thank you to you and your congregation for your $769.50 gift on

2/27/2020 to GraceWorks Ministries. Churches were part of the

founding of GraceWorks 25 years ago, and that continued support has

made all the difference in helping support families living in poverty or in a bind through an unexpected event such

as job loss, death, divorce or illness.

This donation has made it possible for people such as the Smiths to find hope in a season of trials. Mike and Susan

Smith* lost their jobs due to their employers' downsizing. It didn't take long for their savings to run out as they

took care of their six children. Suddenly, they and their children were living in their SUV during the day and

scrounging around for cheap shelter at night - a challenge they never expected to face.

Thank you for your recent gift of $1,000.00 to Living Waters for the World

(LWW). Your generosity will help children, women, and men have the clean

water they need to stay healthy. When children are healthy they can go to school.

When adults are healthy they can earn a living. When a family is healthy, lives are

transformed. What a tremendous gift you have given!

Thank you for your gift of $1,000.00. Marion Medical Mission will use 100% of your

donation as designated.

Marion Medical Mission is different. It is different because we have come together as God's

people; because of what we do together.

In 2019 almost 400,000 people in Malawi, Zambia, and Tanzania got a sustainable source of

safe drinking water because of Marion Medical Mission's Well Program. This year, 3,140 wells were built covering

roughly 60,000 square miles. IMPOSSIBLE! Think about it! 400,000 people got the message Christians in the

United States shared the love of Jesus with them. It is a God thing ... This is Holy Ground.

The Board and Staff of The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee join me as I

thank you for your gift to the Middle Tennessee Emergency Response Fund. We are

grateful for the opportunity to connect your generosity with the needs of those who live in

these hard-hit communities. Our pledge to you is to get your gift to those who are in the

trenches of response - in Nashville's iconic neighborhoods and the great neighborhoods in

Wilson and Putnam counties - as efficiently and effectively as we possibly can.

Thank you for giving at this critical time! Your $1,500.00 gift of health

and hope First Presbyterian Franklin Church is putting healthy,

nourishing food on the tables of struggling individuals and families

who now, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, are out of work, out of

income and out of food, struggling even harder than before.

Your gift helps Society of St. Andrew continue work on the frontlines with volunteer gleaners in hands-on mission

and service; you help send large loads of fruits and vegetables to areas where they are most needed; you support

local feeding agencies in every area of the country; and you reduce food waste-all as you follow Jesus's command

to feed the hungry. Thank you for this gift and for joining with Society of St. Andrew in our mission of feeding

physical and spiritual hunger during this critical time.
