Responding to God’s grace through worship, study, and service.

To Change…To Be Transfigured The final Sunday of February is marked as the Sunday of the

Transfiguration, that is, the transfiguration of the Christ. It also

signals the end of our Epiphany journey. From the stories in

Matthew 17, Mark 9, and Luke 9 we read that Jesus took Peter,

James, and John with him up to a high mountain to pray. As he

was doing so, Jesus was changed—transfigured into a glittering

form, and “two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious

splendor, talking with Jesus.” After which, Peter boldly offered

to build shelters for Jesus and the other figures when a cloud

descended around them and they hear a voice from heaven,

repeating the words spoken at Jesus’ baptism: “This is my Son,

whom I love, with him I am well pleased. Listen to him.”

Like Peter, we may desire to preserve, to “maintain” similar mountain-top experiences, yet our call is to go into the

world to make it “new”. In worship…we are reminded who we are as God’s beloved children, and from worship…

that we are called to go, to do, and to be, for the sake of the Gospel. In Corinthians we read, “We do not preach

ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves as handservants for Jesus’ sake. For it is God who commanded

light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in

the face of Jesus Christ.” (2 Corinthians 4:5-6)

Ambrose of Milan (340-397) reflected upon transfiguration in a similar way,

O splendor of God’s glory bright, O Thou that bringest light from light.

O Light of light, light’s living spring, O Day all days illuming.

To guide whate’er we nobly do, with love all envy to subdue.

To make ill fortune turn to fair and give us grace our wrongs to bear.

Epiphany thus calls for a twofold response. First, as an invitation to worship as did the Magi, offering “gifts most

rare”—that is, ourselves. Likewise, demonstrating the essence of worship—

emptying ourselves—shedding the familiar. Second, Epiphany (and by extension,

Transfiguration Sunday) is an invitation to leave the mountain and join Jesus in his

mission of “change” in the world.

God is still seeking, through you and me, to make the whole world new. Let us

become, in this still new year, the change that we seek.

“Rise up, singing praise!”

Michael

Reading John for Dear Life: A Spiritual Walk with the Fourth Gospel, by Jaime Clark-Soles

Jaime Clark-Soles takes readers on a dynamic journey deep into the heart of John in this lively reading of the Fourth Gospel. This book is not simply a commentary but a spiritual companion to be read alongside the Bible. Clark-Soles provides important historical and literary insights while illuminating the dramatic characters in John and emphasizing the Gospel’s unique themes and symbols. Her engaging writing style will generate enthusiasm and investment in John’s message. Readers will also appreciate the addition of prayers and well as study questions. This excellent guide will enrich our spiritual journeys while opening ourselves up to Jesus through the words, stories, questions, symbols, and characters we encounter in John’s Gospel. The book can be ordered through Amazon or Westminster John Knox Press.

Plan for Summer Camp!

Check out the options at www.nacome.org. Our church feels strongly that children and youth benefit greatly from a summer church camp experience at our presbyterial camp NaCoMe. So strongly that we pay ½ the registration fee for all church members. Registration is open, use the code: Frank20 on their online registration form. (Some camps already have a wait list!)

Primetimers

On January 16, 15 Primetimers rode the church bus to the Nissan Auto Plant in Smyrna, TN where Nissan personnel produced a fantastic and motorvating tour of the 137 acre factory. Even better, the tour was given by tram so almost no walking was needed! The plant produces 650,000 vehicles annually including the Leaf, Maxima, Altima, Rogue, Pathfinder, and Infiniti QX60 models. That means there is a brand new car coming off the production line every 30 seconds. Quite an amazing sight! Following the plant tour, we lunched at La Tavola restaurant in Smyrna. No cameras or cell phones are allowed on the plant tour, so we only have a picture of us at the restaurant, which, by the way, is highly recommended.

Sisters in Spirit

Sisters in Spirit recently began their 6-week discussion of the book One Foot in Heaven: Finding Hope in the Hopeless by Sheila Fitzgerald. Her book is a beautiful story about faith in God, suffering, resilience, and ultimately joy! They meet weekly on Fridays at 10 AM in the Parlor.

Contact Martha Johnson at 615.400.6276 or Cindy Blackburn at 615.260.8680 if you’d like to join them.

Presbyterian Women

Join the Presbyterian Women’s group on the 2nd Tuesdays of each month. They will meet February 11 in the parlor from 9:45 – 11:00 AM. They will study lesson six – Words of Love: Hold your Marriage Sacred. You are invited to come and share in their circle of study and friendship. Contact Betty Willoughby 615-794-1131 if interested.

Saturday Morning Men’s Bible Study

Each week a group of men of various ages meet on Saturday morning at 7:30-8:30 AM in the Adult Library for Bible study. We do not claim to be Biblical scholars but we are interested in scripture and how it impacts our lives. We are beginning a new study on the book of Acts. The study books by William Barclay are available for a small cost.

Coffee is free. The “treats” to go with the coffee are also free! Try us out any Saturday. For more information call Art Herron at 615-403-4655.

VBS is in the Works! Save the Dates: June 15-18

We have a 2020 visioning-planning team percolating some possible new ideas – stay tuned for exciting news!

MISSION Lebanon Mission Trip Recap

The Lebanon trip was a huge spiritual gift for the 5 of our congregation (Cindy Blackburn, Chris Joiner, Michael Reimer, Dave Stivers, and Mary Sellers Shaw) who were able to make it to Beirut on January 17th. Thanks to all of you for the love and support and prayers you gave to us. We experienced great warmth and kindness from the staff at National Evangelical Synod in Lebanon. Elmarie Parker did an outstanding job of providing us with a wide variety of experiences over 8 days. We were able to see what is currently being done for Syrian and Palestinian refugee children in terms of education and just how the local churches are working to accomplish this. We look forward to sharing much more with all of you on what we experienced this past week and how it has impacted us in our thinking about this wonderful place called Lebanon.

Nashville Mission Trip Recap

Thursday, January 23rd, Chuck Cairatti, Robin Pulliam, Stephanie Lampley, Elizabeth Stivers, and Barbara Roos started our Nashville Mission with a trip to Catholic Charities. Unfortunately, our contact person was ill and we could not tour with anyone there. Elizabeth came to the rescue and called Servant Group International. We were able to meet with Kim, their Office Manager. She was very informative on very short notice. We learned of ways we can become involved with the Kurdish Community. Elizabeth shared her experience with the Falafel Festival she and her family attended in the fall. It was quite an experience for them to be "refugees" in a new country. We also learned of ways we can help with teaching English, providing childcare for parents learning English, and partnering with their newest member of their family, "Sew for Hope." We look forward to learning of more ways to help. After our visit to SGI, we had a wonderful lunch at House of Kabob.

On Friday, we visited Caza Azafrán on Nolensville Pike. What a wonderful experience that was! Caza Azafrán is the location of Conexión Américas. Conexión Américas is a nonprofit organization that is building a welcoming community by creating opportunities for not only Latino families but now, also for members of our Muslim communities. There are many programs that they run such as a health clinic, education centers for learning computer skills, learning English, and starting and growing your own business. We saw their beautiful commercial kitchen for entrepreneurs and a dance studio. We also learned that as part of the Metro Nashville Schools, they have a pre-K program that has 96 children enrolled. We met with Tara Lentz, Senior Director of Strategic Growth. She was very excited to know that we wanted to help. There are so many ways that we can help from childcare, helping with their Holiday Bazaar, and other festivals throughout the year.

CONGREGATIONAL CARE Growth Groups

Have you signed up for a Growth Group yet? If not, no worries because there is still time. The deadline to register is THIS SUNDAY, February 2.

What are Growth Groups? Small groups that meet weekly in members’ homes or at church to get to know each other, discuss a book, and pray for one another. When and how often do they meet? Each group will meet for 1 1/2 hours weekly beginning the week of February 17 through the week of March 30. What book are we reading? We will be studying The Apostles’ Creed using the iBelieve: 40 Daily Readings for the Purposeful Presbyterian series. How do I get the book? We have permission to make copies of the book and will be providing them free of charge to all participants, so you do not need to purchase a book. Just pick up your copy in the narthex on Sunday or in the church office. Why join a Growth Group? So you can have an experience like this. “Growth Groups provide space for me to express my point of view without judgement and grow by hearing other people's experiences and points of view. Greeting people in church after our time together is qualitatively different. I feel blessed by the opportunity to be part of a Growth Group.”

What are the group options?

Monday 10:30- 12 noon FPC Parlor Monday 7-8:30 p.m. Spencer Hall- 96W near Downs Blvd Tuesday 10-11:30 a.m. Reid Hill Commons off 96W & Downs Blvd Tuesday 7-8:30 p.m. Crowne Pointe, Thompson’s Station Tuesday 7-8:30 p.m. Forrest Crossing Friday 5:30-7:30 p.m. Sullivan Farms/Franklin- childcare option

How do I sign up? Click here to sign up on our website. You may also sign up this Sunday on the Connection Card or in the narthex. Whether you have participated in the past or would be a first-time participant, prayerfully consider joining a Growth Group. If you have any questions, contact Anne Keener ([email protected].)

Prayer Shawl Ministry

Do you knit or crochet or have you wanted to learn? We are creating an additional daytime Prayer Shawl Ministry group since many prefer not to drive at night or the daytime simply works better. This group will meet on the 1st and 3rd Mondays each month from 1:00-2:30 p.m. in the church Parlor. This new daytime group will begin meeting on February 17, and all are welcome to attend.

The Prayer Shawl Ministry quietly ministers after the death of a family member or during a prolonged illness. Most prayer shawls are given to members but on occasion are also given to family members. We often receive thank you notes and wanted to share this one from Steve Lewis’ sister who received a prayer this past fall.

Dear Members of the Prayer Shawl Ministry,

The gift of your prayer shawl was wonderful! I was so humbled by your thoughts and prayers. It surely brought me comfort in so many ways. I have been part of a knitting ministry but never got one myself. Now I know how others feel when they receive a shawl. Thank you so much!

Sincerely, Jane Rutledge

Whether you are a longtime knitter or are ready to learn, join us on February 17. There is no commitment so come try it out, see what you think, and enjoy some fellowship and dessert. If you have any questions, contact Karen Hanson ([email protected] or 407-341-3944.)

Visitation Ministry

Have you noticed anyone wearing a Visitation Ministry name badge at church? Those wearing these name badges visit members of our congregation who aren’t able to worship with us regularly through our Visitation Ministry. Wearing the name badge helps the member they are visiting remember their name and helps identify them when visiting a senior living center. If you would like to learn more about our Visitation Ministry, contact Karen Hanson ([email protected] or 407-341-3944.)

Worship Flowers

Thanks to all who donated worship flowers throughout 2019. They are a beautiful reminder of God’s creation that enhance out worship each week. Did you know each Monday the flowers are rearranged into vases and delivered to homebound members, to those who have experienced a death in the family, or to those recovering from illness? The flowers not only add to our worship but additionally continue to bless people throughout the week.

Thank you to Betty and Wayne Barcheski, Pat and David Horvat, Linda and Keith Legenzoff, and Brenda and Dee Plunkett for delivering our flowers monthly. We also appreciate Ruth Osburn, Kathy Schwartz, and Mary Jane Wormer for filling in at different times throughout the year.

Would you like to donate flowers in memory of a loved one, in celebration of a special occasion, or in honor of someone? As of this publication, the dates listed below are still available for the coming year, and the cost is $85.

February 9, 16 March 1, 15 April 26 May 24 June 14, 28 July 5, 12, 26 August 2, 23, 30 September 20, 27 October 4, 25 November 1, 8, 15

Who would you like to donate flower in honor or memory of this year? You may sign up by contacting Sara Chang ([email protected] or 675-794-5114). Thank you in advance.

Liturgical Questions – Liturgical Answers: Liturgy, in its simplest term, is defined as the work of the people. Week to week this community, and others

like it, gather around an expected form, moving either from or toward something in worship (such as

hearing the Gospel, prior to the Sermon). This action of movement is part of the work, but it is easy,

because of its familiarity, to become less than what it is called to be---a narrative propelling us forward,

making us, and the whole world, new.

This month I would invite you to consider the broad sections of worship---We Prepare to Hear God’s

Word – We Hear God’s Word – We Respond to God’s Word. Every action, every moment of

reflection, every piece of music prepared and offered, and every printed—spoken—sung word finds its

purpose and meaning within each of these broad areas.

Next Sunday, take a moment to reflect upon the meaning and purpose of each of these parts of our

worship and be made…new!

‘Casavant Count-down’ -- 8 Months Casavant Frerès Limitée Opus 3938

UPDATE: Work continues on our new organ at the Casavant workshop in St. Hyacinthe (Montreal), Quebec,

Canada. At present the casework, console, interior mechanism, pipework, superstructure, and wind supply are all

in various states of production. Most recently, we have removed the present organ’s chime tubes (21 in number)

in order to ship them to Quebec to be incorporated into the new organ. This voice will sound again within the

tonal structure of the new organ. It is also interesting to note that several vintage sets of pipes, built by Casavant

and dating from 1910, are being also incorporated into the new organ.

Completion in Canada is scheduled for early May, but prior to shipment, the instrument will be fully assembled,

tuned, and tested at the factory. If interested, you are invited to journey to the factory in Canada to see and hear

the organ prior to its arrival in Franklin.

Installation is scheduled to take place in 8 brief months – September 2020.

Look for more information and continued updates each month!

THANK YOU NOTES Thank you so much for your generous donation of $1,250.00 to Hard Bargain Association. I am grateful for your support. You are a tremendous blessing to the families we serve in the Hard Bargain neighborhood.

Your partnership with us helps us offer the life changing gift of homeownership for hard working people like Torrell Hodge. He recently signed a contract to build a new home for his family on Glass Street in Hard Bargain. Again, thank you for your support! You are helping us impact lives and make a difference, one home at a time, one family at a time. I appreciate you!

Sincerely,

Brant Bousquet, MS, CFRE, Executive Director

We are so grateful for your gifts to the Kairos Prison Ministry of Tennessee, Riverbend Advisory Council. Through your donations the ministry is able to pursue its mission of ministry to the men incarcerated at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville, TN. Through the grace of God, and enabled by your gifts, we are working to bring persons lost in shame, guilt, unforgiveness and hatred to know the healing and saving power of Jesus Christ, and a new way of life.

We hope you understand how much your support of this ministry means to the people with whom we come into contact. Lives are touched and new hope is born because God has put our work on your heart. We are eternally grateful and hope that your love for us and our mission in Christ’s name might continue.

We continue in God’s Service,

Tammy S. Horton, Financial Secretary, Kairos Prison Ministry

The Outreach Foundation would like to thank you for your recent generous gift. As an engaged follower of Christ, your gift equips the global church in Kingdom work. Like you, the global church knows of this Wonderful Counselor, this Prince of Peace name Jesus Christ. Your gift will make this proclamation stronger and more vibrant around the globe as the new year begins. Thank you for your generosity!

Blessings,

Rob Weingartner, Executive Director

Thank you for your very generous donation of $1,500. Clients like Jan trust Bridges Domestic Violence Center to help them heal emotionally, make positive plans, and prepare for independence. Your gift helps to form a bridge from hurt and hope. We realize you have many choices when making a charitable gift decision. The clients, staff, volunteers, and board of directors at Bridges are grateful that you value our mission to ensure successful safe transition to independent living through shelter, education, case management and developing transitional housing. We could not do it without you!

With deepest appreciation,

Linda Crockett, Executive Director
