On behalf of the Board of Softball SA I am pleased to present the 2011 Annual Report.
This year marks the end of the second year of our four-year Strategic Plan (presented in July 2009)
which was the result of the 2008 Governance Review.
That Governance Review further resulted in the important Thompson Tregear report “Step Up to the
Plate or We Could be Out!” which strongly recommended that the future Board of Softball SA be more
strategic in its focus to ensure the long-term viability of Softball in South Australia.
Those recommendations led to a radically changed Constitution in 2009 and the subsequent change
in the nature of the Board; from being predominantly operational, Board of Management, to a
governance-focussed, Board of Directors.
This cultural change is acknowledged as being vital for long term success by many experts in the
field, and it is a direct response to the changing nature of sports management in Australia today. In
practice, this has meant there are a number of significant changes and challenges to the way the
organisation has been structured and run, not the least of which is the role and nature of the Annual
General Meeting (AGM).
You will see that many of the operational elements of previous AGM’s are no longer present in the
new meeting Agenda. This is because, under the new Constitution, many of these elements are no
longer necessary. The rationale for this is that the membership determines the composition of the
Board, and the Board is then empowered to engage the Executive to conduct the day-to-day
operations in line with the Strategic direction, set by the Board. The membership, therefore determine
the direction of the organisation, by communicating with the Board, to ensure that the Board are
delivering the correct Strategies which align with the wishes of the membership. The separation of
operational elements, such as the approval of the Budget in such a public forum, allows the
organisation to preserve the commercial confidence that’s often required to operate efficiently. The
presentation of Annual Financial Reports at the AGM ensures that accountability to the membership
for the financial performance of the organisation remains.
This new structure highlights why communication between the Board and the membership is now
more than ever before so important.
One activity introduced a few years ago was the Strategic Planning forum which will continue to be an
annual event going forward. This, along with other activities of the Board, will help us ensure that
good communication mechanisms are developed between the Board and the membership.
People
In January 2011 James Harris commenced in the role of Executive Officer, after Mark Howells
vacated the position in December 2010. During the transition period Bob Nicholson acted in the role
over the summer holiday period. This was a particularly challenging time as we prepared to stage the
National Under17’s Boys’ Championships at West Beach. Despite being the traditional holiday period,
Bob garnered support from far and wide to stage a most successful event. Our appreciation and
congratulations go out to Bob and all of the helpers who made the event the success that it was.
This year will see Keith & Joan Sampson step down from their roles as Senior and Junior Records
Officers. This will end a long association with Softball in South Australia for the Sampson family,
which started in the usual way – when their daughter, Jodie, took up the sport. Since then, Keith and
Joan a have worked passionately and tirelessly to support Softball in a number of roles, including
Keith’s 12 years on the Board - 8 years as President. On behalf of the SA Softball community, I wish

Keith and Joan all the best in their retirement, and sincerely thank them for their contribution to the
sport during their long association.
Again, this year, it was the tireless work of our “behind the scenes” leaders who helped to keep our
sport ticking over. Our technical Directors, Neville Lawrance (Umpiring), Janelle Behrendt (Coaching)
and Lindy Rattigan (Scoring) combined to ensure the performance of our state teams at National
Championships, helped to stage our local events, and worked towards developing the skills set
required to keep our sport growing into the future. I think the highlight of this year’s efforts was the
focus that each of the Technical Directors’ have had on broadening the expertise for their respective
portfolios in our community. This development is absolutely crucial to the growth of our sport going
forward, and it is a focus for your Board, to encourage and support this work in the coming year.
Sadly, this year saw the passing of much loved, and long-serving, Marg Abbott. Marg made a
significant contribution to umpiring Softball in SA over many years, both on the diamond and through
her involvement in the Umpiring Committee, SASUA and umpire development. Throughout her
softball career, Marg gained enormous respect for her straight-forward and no-nonsense approach to
the game. Her presence will be sadly missed, particularly the encouragement she provided to rookie
umpires, and the many stories she told.
Softball Operations / Events
This year saw the return of National Competition to Adelaide Shores in the form of the Boys’ U17
National Championships in January. Given the staffing issues we had at the time, the final result in
terms of staging this event, was an outstanding success. As mentioned earlier, credit has to go to Bob
Nicholson, who stepped in to coordinate this event, but also, credit to the technical Directors who
worked hard to provide the necessary support crew for the event, and all of the volunteers who
contributed throughout the championships.
This year saw the State Junior Championships held in Pt Pirie, in line with our commitment to support
Softball in the regional areas of SA. The highly experienced and dedicated team in Pt Pirie, staged a
successful tournament, and are to be congratulated on their performance. Not only did the event
attract teams from all over the state, but the local media coverage of the event, and attendance by
local politicians raised awareness of Softball in the local, mid-North community during the event.
This year saw the return of Men’s Fastpitch to West Beach for the first time in a number of years. The
Friday night format proved popular, with the bar opening and a barbeque operating, creating a great
atmosphere for the after-work gathering. Lindy Rattigan is to be congratulated for her initiative in
bringing this competition together, which fits perfectly with our Strategic objective to “provide …
quality competition in all areas of the sport”.
Development
This year, the Board has been working on a number of initiatives, in line with our Strategic Plan. In
particular, with respect to High Performance, preliminary work has been completed to establish the
High Performance and Development Academies within Softball SA. These two forms of Academies
will provide the necessary structures to allow individual players and officials to progress their skills
towards national and international levels. Whilst more information will be provided as these are
established this year, the important element to note is that these are aimed to provide structured
pathways for players to participate at their desired levels. And the organisation will be such, that the
programs and activities will be structured to attract the maximum level of funding possible. In this way,
the Academies will meet a number of Strategic Objectives surrounding development and funding.
As a prelude to the establishment of the High Performance Academy, this year, the State Teams will
participate in a revolutionary new activity, designed to provide a new, fast-paced format of the game.
The 20/20 style of game (20 minutes fielding / 20 minutes batting), will be played on a Wednesday

night at Adelaide Shores from 17th September to 19
th October, and involve all State team players and
coaches. Whilst the primary goal is to provide an alternative training activity for all involved, the
entertainment value is expected to be high.
In Junior Development, Softball Australia has recently launched the Softball Batter-Up program
nationally. This exciting program is starting to gain traction in the Eastern states, and we are keen to
develop the program in SA as a method for introducing the sport into the Primary school system.
Commercial Operations
The South Australian Office of Recreation and Sport (ORS) and Softball Australia continue to be our
main sources of funding, outside member contributions. The Executive is currently working with ORS
on a number of specific projects to improve the delivery of sport in SA.
This year we worked closely with Adelaide Shores on a number of projects and issues, and they
provided significant support for staging the Under 17 Boys’ National Championships. Activities such
as this are closely aligned with the Adelaide Shores strategic plan to hold national and international
events within the Adelaide Shores precinct, and therefore, we expect to enjoy continued support for
these types of major events in the future. In fact, in October this year, we will be hosting the Softball
program of the 13th Australian Master’s games which has been supported by Adelaide Shores, and is
also expected to provide a one-off additional income to the Association this year.
In sponsorship and partnerships, we continue to work with our suppliers to gain maximum value from
our business, and this year, our Executive will have a particular focus on the returns that we gain from
these relationships.
In the past year, we have continued to develop relationships with Baseball SA on a number of issues,
and will continue to do so in the coming year. The Board recognises there are a number of synergies
in the areas of both game development and commercialisation that can be gained from working with
Baseball SA. We plan to further build that relationship to the benefit of both sports in South Australia.
Softball SA Board
In November 2010 Karen Hockley stepped down from the position of Chair and in July 2011 resigned
from the Board. On behalf of the Board and the broader community, I would like to acknowledge the
contribution that Karen made to Softball in SA. Karen joined the Board in the role of Chairperson, at
the time that the new Constitution came into effect in 2009. This heralded the start of the new
paradigm for our Organisation and it was a particularly challenging time for the Board and Softball in
this state. Karen tackled the challenge head-on, and it is now up to us to continue the process of
Organisational change in order for us to meet the challenges facing our sport going forward.
My appointment to the Board and subsequently, to the Chair, has certainly been an experience of
rapid learning, as I have come to grips with the intricacies and nuances of sports administration in
Australia, and particularly, in South Australia. I think it’s fair to say that whilst we have a road-map for
our future, neatly laid in our Strategic Plan and the recommendations of the earlier, Governance
Review, the past year has been one in which we have been focussed on keeping the “wheels
turning”. Our new Executive Officer, James Harris has done an outstanding job, in getting up to speed
on the many operational issues involved in managing the organisation, and I am confident that the
coming season will see him and his team grow the sport in line with the objectives outlined in our
Strategic Plan. I am looking forward to working with James on the many challenges which lie ahead in
the coming year and on behalf of the Board, I thank you, the members, for your support.

When I was first told about the latest EO vacancy at the start of this year I immediately thought “I
hope they get someone who actually knows about Softball and cares about it”. It didn’t take me long
after that to decide to apply myself. I was quite excited to get an interview for the position, but was
extremely honoured to be offered the position, and it was my absolute pleasure to accept it. I started
right in the middle of the season, having to take in a large amount of information in my first few
months through meetings, orientations, taking over projects already underway and starting to plan
new ones like the awards night and our big event for the 2011/12 season, the 13th Australian Masters
Games.
In my opinion, Softball in this State and in this Country is moving in the right direction to have a
sustainable future. It is no secret we rely heavily on OR&S funding, membership and the support of
our volunteers and everyone involved to give back to our sport, to help secure a prosperous future. I
would like to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers across the State – every team, club and
association has them, and without them we would not have a game to play. However, we cannot
continue to sit back and rely on the same people. As the saying goes, “many hands make light work,”
and I believe this is very fitting for Softball.
I am very much looking forward to my first full season as EO because Softball SA has some exciting
projects, competitions and plans ahead. With a focus on State Teams, I want to ensure that all teams
and age groups are represented this year. As well, there will be a new preseason competition for
those in the women’s teams in an exciting new format of 20Twenty Softball; the main diamonds have
had some TLC courtesy of Adelaide Shores; we are hosting the 13th Australian Masters Games in
October; the Hills Softball Association will host their first ever Junior State Championship; and this
coming season will see the launch of the Softball Batter Up programme, a new programme that will
encourage participation for players as young as 5 years old. These few things are just the tip of the
iceberg for what is to come from Softball SA.
Softball is a sport which transcends boundaries. I have had the pleasure of travelling to the APY
Lands and visiting the Far North West Sports League (FNWSL), courtesy of the SANFL. Softball has
a tremendous relationship with Frank Leonard and his team at the SANFL, as well as a sizable
presence and participation rate amongst women in the APY Lands. I believe that Softball has a bright
future with the communities in the APY Lands, and I look forward to building and maintaining that
relationship. At this time I would like to thank Bob Nicholson and Kevin Tannebring for their
tremendous work they have done for Softball up on the Lands over the last few years. They are both
highly respected and liked on the Lands, helping to give Softball a professional and fun reputation.
The FNWSL is currently an 8 team competition and looking to expand into juniors, and possibly a 9th
team in the seasons to come. I am eagerly anticipating the representative teams from FNWSL
travelling to Adelaide to play in the Labour Day tournament, and perhaps even State Championships
this season.
I am a very proud South Australian representative myself and the efforts and performances of our
State Teams this season has given me renewed optimism for Softball in South Australia. I would like
to congratulate all the State Teams for their commitment and accomplishments this season.
Extra special mention should be made to those who made Aussie Squads, which, in a first for quite
some time, SA had not one but two boys selected for the U17 squad – Matt Dean (Hahndorf/Hills) and
Marcellus Enalanga (Tigers/Pt Pirie).
In the U17 Girls, Jordan Lambert (West Torrens) and Steph Trzcinski (West Torrens) were selected.
Steph Trzcinski and Annali Dolman (Sturt) were named in the U19 Women’s squad and have both
been named as reserves for the upcoming U19 Women’s World Championships. With hard work, I am

confident these young women will take the next step in their Softball career, as they both will still be
eligible for the next U19 Worlds in 2013.
And lastly to Belinda White (Sturt), who was richly rewarded for her dedication and commitment to the
sport with a spot in the Australian team that travelled to Canada and the United States this winter.
She is our brightest shining Starz player, and can hopefully remain a part of the National team for
many years to come.
While we have a lot of dedicated players across the state, notable mention should be given to
Marcellus and Brad Gowers (Sunraysia) who played as draft players for the ACT U19 Men’s team in
Melbourne earlier this year. Both played well and had a successful tournament, with Brad winning the
ACT MVP award. Brad is continuing to expand his Softball CV, as he is currently playing in the
Netherlands for the current Dutch National Champions, DVH-Amstelveen, in Amstelveen. He, along
with Jarryd Farrell (Mt Barker/Hills) and Tahlia Larosa (Hahndorf/Hills) have played in the Netherlands
this year, on the back of Dave Chiasson (Glenelg/MFSA) and myself playing for the Dutch club in
2010. I hope that this relationship with DVH-Amstelveen continues to strengthen in years to come and
provide further opportunities for South Australian Softballers, and perhaps that one day our Dutch
comrades may come out and play in our various associations here in South Australia.
Since I commenced this role, I have been given ongoing help and guidance from the Board. I would
like to thank the Board for their support and belief in me as I have settled into the position. Particularly
to Steve, who has worked non-stop for the betterment of Softball SA to ensure a strong future, I look
forward to continuing to work with him on the many challenges that lie ahead. And to Bob Nicholson,
who gave me a warm and welcome hand over to the EO position, his work in and out of the office
mostly goes unnoticed but he has played such a massive role here and I would be lost without him.
I would also like to give a special mention to the Technical Directors – Janell Behrendt who is ever so
reliable and doing a tremendous job as the Director of Coaching; Neville Lawrance and his team (the
Softball SA Umpires) have been a pleasure and easy to work with; and Lindy Rattigan our Director of
Scoring, she has been my guiding light in Softball for many years now and one of my inspirations for
applying for this job in the first place. They are all a credit to the organisation, all fulfilling their roles to
the highest standard.
And lastly to my dedicated team, the Staff here at Softball SA – Sam Small, Jacqui Dunn and Tracey
Borovnik – thank you all for your great efforts and long hours. It is a pleasure working with you and
while I do rely heavily on you all, you always pull through for me. Keep up the great work guys.

The 2010/11 season of the Adelaide Competition saw the introduction of the Under 11 grade available for children aged from 7 to 10 years of age and played with modified rules similar to “3 pitch Softball”. No results are recorded nor is there a finals series, the emphasis being on participation, having fun and learning basic skills. All eligible players were provided with a Certificate. Six clubs entered teams in the Under 11s with a total of 61 players being registered. The success of this grade was evident by the enthusiasm of the players’ officials and supporters involved. As well as the Under 11’s, the Junior Competition consisted of Under 13 (8 teams), Under 15 (11 teams) and Under 17 (8 teams). In each grade, a complete round in which each team played each of the other teams once was played, following which they were split into two divisions based on their rankings at the time of the split. Finals series were played with the following teams winning the Grand Final in their grade and division: Under 17 Division 1 Sturt Navy Under 17 Division 2 West Torrens Under 15 Division 1 Sturt Navy Under 15 Division 2 Walkerville Under 13 Division 1 Sturt Navy Under 13 Division 2 Walkerville Sturt Falcons earned the award for the Most Successful Club in the Junior Competition. The Senior Competition consisted of A Grade (5 teams), B Grade (6 teams), C Grade (7 teams) and D Grade (9 teams). The A grade competition was played on Saturdays and some Wednesday nights following the break, each team playing a total of 24 minor round games for the season. B, C and D grades played on Saturdays and several double-headers were necessary in each grade. B grade teams played a total of 20 minor rounds each with C and D grades 18 minor rounds each. Each grade played a Finals series with the following teams winning in their grade: A Grade Walkerville B Grade Walkerville C Grade Onkaparinga D Grade Legends Walkerville Cats earned the award for the Most Successful Club in the Senior Competition. The individual Best & Fairest award winners in each Grade were: A Grade Belinda White Sturt D Grade (three way tie) Robyn Bassett Legends B Grade Karyn Dale Walkerville Hayley Edwards Legends C Grade Melissa Strapps Sturt Naoko Waugh Port Adelaide Adelaide Competition representative teams were fielded in all grades of the Senior State Championships in January, and Club teams were again strongly represented in the Junior State Championships in February. An Under 15 representative team from Adelaide Competition also competed at the Waverley Easter Tournament. The success of the competition relies upon the input and efforts of many people including (but not limited to) parents, supporters, players, team officials, club committee officials, umpires and competition committee members and thanks must go to each and every one of you for your contributions to this success. The Gilley's Shield is the highlight of the Softball calendar where Australia's best female Softballers
represent their state or territory in a national competition to win the Shield. It is the highest level of
competition for the Open Women and is played over 4 rounds, 3 weekends and one 5 day round and
is held in conjunction with the men's final. This combined event is the pinnacle of the Softball national
calendar, showcasing top athletes and their outstanding skills.
The Edebone-Weber Shield is run in conjunction with the Gilley's Shield. The McLaughlin Cup is
awarded to the team that finishes top of the ladder on points at the end of the competition.
Participating teams include the South Australian Starz, Victorian Titans, Western Australian Flames,
NSW Firestars, Queensland Heat and ACT Diamonds.
The SA Starz have struggled at this level of competition since its inclusion is 2008/2009, as it has
lacked the level of adequate competition locally to prepare athletes for national competition. We
generally field the youngest and least experienced teams in the league each year, unable to compare
to the number of players with national and international success on opposition state's rosters.

Highlights for the SA team in the season included its first 2 wins, against the Vic Titans, and The NZ
Open Women’s team, in as many years. While not a great feat on paper, these small successes have
been the building blocks in a steadily improving performance, attitude and confidence of the young
team. The increased competitiveness of our side was signalled by an increasing number of hard
fought games with close results.
This year also saw Starz catcher, Belinda White, return to the side full time after a stint at Div 1 USA
college, Troy, and was rewarded by selection in the Australian open women's team to tour North
America and compete in the Canada Cup and USA cup in 2011.
The Starz joint MVP's for the season were Belinda White and Ada Brincat-Tree.

U17 GIRLS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP (Esther Deason Shield)

We had a very successful Championship finishing 4
th. It was well run and organised. Softball
Queensland needs to be commended on how they handled the unfortunate events in January. They could not have done anything more for any of the states than what they did in the very trying circumstances. There were many volunteers who provided valuable assistance to my entire staff throughout the week. The facilities provided by Softball Victoria and Softball Queensland were great. During the rain, we were also able to hire a much bigger indoor training facility which was 20 minutes from Brisbane CBD which allowed us to train without too much cabin fever. Once again, we ran pre-selection training which worked well as there was large numbers at each but also gave development opportunities to all players across the state of any ability within the age group. I had Troy Bettineschi again this year to run the fitness sessions with the team each Sunday morning. As much as the girls dreaded the sessions (as they were hard) it gave the coaching staff confidence in the girls fitness and ability to get through the Championship week without too many soft tissue injuries. Due to the large training squad we played mainly internal trials. This year I was able to organise a group of senior Adelaide players to play in a trial game which gave the team very valuable game training against some smart opposition which definitely highlighted some areas in which we could improve in The team finished 4
th which is a little disappointing compared to the years before. That being said we
improved on our fielding average, from 0.905 to 0.926 making 12 less errors than in 2010. This was our major goal from last year which we have definitely achieved. Our batting average was also slightly improved. The team worked well together throughout the week and we did not encounter any major issues throughout the week. Jordan Lambert and Stephanie Trzcinski performed extremely well and gained selection in the Australian U17 Squad. Jordan shows remarkable talent as a pivot, she is an extremely hard worker and gutsy player and by able to be a very effective lead off (and leading our batting statistics at 0.367) she has well deserved her place in this squad. Steph with limited game time was a definite game breaker. To pinch hit to hit a double to score 2 runs in our opening game is an outstanding effort for a 15 year old. It would be great to see Steph continue in this age group in the next two years to mark her dominance in this age group. Maggie Breen showed a remarkable improvement from 2010 Championships with an increased game time both pitching and batting. Much more was asked of Maggie this year and she certainly relished the challenge. She batted 0.333 and pitched 31 innings with an ERA of 1.8, however, she was involved in pitching many of the must win games to ensure that we were able to play in finals. It has been a joy to see Maggie improve since the 2009 and I hope she will continue to play in the 2012 team as with another year under her belt she is definitely under the eyes of the Australian selectors. Maud Taylor and Jordan Lambert showed outstanding leadership qualities throughout the week both on and off the field which was important to the teams on and off field performance. Maud is an extremely smart catcher and provides plenty of support to our pitchers. Kelsey Knuckey batted extremely well, having the second highest batting average in the team. Kayla Rocco did a remarkable job at shortstop for the majority of the tournament. Eleanor Mowle also stepped up this year with her batting performance; she had a slow start to the week but was able to perform at the important end of the tournament. Ebony McLean and Chelsea Robinson are also very important players to this team and will prove to be extremely valuable to this for another 2 years. Each of my officials performed extremely well in the tasks I had assigned to them. The officials worked extremely well as a group and helped each other out when required. This was not limited to their official roles, as all officials helped in all areas of the tournament. I would like to make special mention of Sue Knuckey who did a fantastic job. Her leadership in Brisbane to ensure that all players and officials were at all times safe and able to get home from the natural disaster. But to manage and score a tournament was a tremendous effort and appreciative of everything Sue did for not only the team, but the support she constantly provided all the officials. We have been lucky enough to have Grant Taylor available to us the past two years to carry out our physio needs. It would be great to have a physio as part of our staff to ensure that players are managed properly in regards to injury or identification of serious injury. This group of players are

around the mark and it is extremely important that we are able to keep them as a group as I believe we will be able to go one better next year so it is important that the success of this team is not necessarily sacrificed for the success of the older age groups. We need to ensure that players who do in fact double up in playing U19s are actually not only physically but mentally ready to play at this higher level rather than to help satisfy the needs of the older age group. We also need to ensure that we don’t burn players out for the future years. Part of our success was due the availability of all coaches in the last few weeks leading up to the tournament who were able to provide all players with individual training to ensure that they were confident in knowing they were ready to embark a National Tournament.

COACHING
This year the Softball SA website underwent some major changes. Unfortunately in the transition a lot
of information on coaching accreditations was lost, I hope to have this all back up soon and will
continue to use this page as a source of information to coaches and encourage coaches to look at it
regularly.
Accreditation
The levels 1 and 2 are still very popular as they are available through the at home program of
CD/DVD, while we do still offer the face to face delivery of these courses, getting a group of 10
together can be difficult at times, which is why people have chosen to do their accreditation using the
CD/DVD. I reported last year that Level 3 would be ready to be rolled out, however there have been
some unavoidable delays and hopefully this will be rolled out soon. Unfortunately Softball Australia
still hasn’t had the opportunity to complete levels 4 – 6. There are a few coaches, who are hoping to
complete these levels, and to those coaches I encourage you to apply for SA Development coaching
positions, or the Friendship Series coaching positions as levels 4 – 6 are heavily based on experience
and practice at these levels. This way you’ll be getting a head start on the practical side of the criteria.
Currently there are only 54 accredited softball coaches in South Australia; there has been a large
decline in the number of accredited coaches this year with many coaches deciding against renewing
their accreditation as they are no longer actively coaching. A significant amount of education and
promotion of the benefits to clubs to have their coaches accredited needs to occur if we are to
maintain the high standard of coaching that is required to continue to see Softball grow in this state.
On a positive note there were 10 coaches obtaining or updating their accreditation in the last 12
months. It is anticipated that there will be a number of coaches undertaking the next level of coaching
in the coming year with level 3 soon to be on offer.
Australian Coaches visit SA
On the 5 June 2010, the Australian Under 19 Women’s Head Coach, Paula McGovern visited
Adelaide to meet up and train with the three SA based Australian Under 19 Squad members.
Following on from the success of Fabian’s visit in 2009, Paula offered to make her training session
open to all coaches to come and observe. For those coaches that did attend I am sure like myself,
they gained some valuable pointers from Paula from observing her training.
The newly appointed Australian Open Women’s coach Kere Johanson recently visited Adelaide to
train the one SA based Australian Open Women’s squad member. It is anticipated that he will return
to Adelaide in the future and I hope to be able to invite coaches to come and observe these sessions.
These opportunities are very valuable for players and coaches as they allow us to see what we need
to be working on in order to represent our country. I strongly encourage coaches to attend these
sessions and observe and learn from the Australian Head Coaches when given the opportunity.

2010 Australian Paper
Some 58 umpires sat the National Umpires Exam with a further 10 sitting the Basic Exam Paper for a
total of 68 umpires. This is the highest number of exams sat in May for a number of years and it is
pleasing to see so many sitting the exam. The total was made up of 7 level 4 and above and 61 Level
0-3. With the new rule book being used next year, it is important that umpire once again sit the 2011
paper.
The 7 Level 4-8 umpires sat the exam in just three locations and all of them umpire within the
Adelaide Competition this is an increase over last year’s exam although none of the Level 4-8 are
new umpires. A pleasing aspect is the fact that all Level 4-8 umpires were able to obtain a mark to
maintain or advance. While only two level 0-3 umpires failed to gain the required mark to allow them
to maintain or advance their current level of accreditation.
2010 Basic Paper
The Basic exam paper is available to all Associations, Clubs and State Teams anytime that they would like to arrange a time for members to sit the paper. It is an ideal means of assessing general rule knowledge for players and coaches. It is required for Green Shirt Umpires and is also available for anyone interested in gaining Level 1 accreditation or existing umpires to obtain a theory pass mark to allow assessment for level 2. While the paper is generally sat in November arraignments can be made for associations or groups to sit at anytime.
It was very pleasing to have 66 people sit the 2010 basic paper with almost 25% of these gaining Level 1 accreditation. A comparison of the last 4 years:

Australian Theory Exam Preparation Nights

Alan conducted three sessions with 27 umpires attending from the Adelaide clubs. These sessions
were repeated at CDSA under the direction of Kevin Tannebring with 22 umpires attending.
Preseason Basic Rules / Umpiring Clinic
This is now fifth year that we have been running a “GREEN SHIRT” program with the continued
assistance of SASI who have been able to gain sponsorship from Scouts who have enabled the
continuation of free polo shirts, posters and support material being made available. We had a very
good attendance this year with 27 attending the two sessions however would like to see more clubs
becoming involved with most of the interest coming from just two clubs. Of the 27 attendees some 15
indicated that they were interested in entering the “Green Shirt Program”. There is also continuing
interest from the affiliates with four having introduced the program and are now starting to benefit from
the program with new umpires being introduced to the umpiring ranks.
A preseason clinic was conducted for the benefit of coaches, players and umpires from the Adelaide
and surrounding affiliates with a focus on the pitching rule. This was generally well received and it
allowed an exchange of ideas both formally and informally.
Alan McAuliffe spent several weeks at CDSA conducting assessments and provided valuable feed
back to a number of umpires as he has done in Adelaide over the past few seasons.
A Basic clinic was conducted in the Hills with a very enthusiastic group participating in discussions
focusing on the new rules as well as expanding understanding of some of the more complicated
sections of the rules.
Kevin Tannebring ventured down to Mount Gambier to deliver a clinic for the umpires and interested
people. This has been something that we have attempted but been un able to achieve for a couple of
seasons for one reason or another.
Both Kevin and Leah Schwartz have been involved within the APY Lands working on the indigenous
softball program for women in joint cooperation with SANFL and their football program for the men in
the APY Lands.
With the acceptance, by National Officials Accreditation Scheme (NOAS), of the umpire training
course material which has been prepared by the National Umpiring Committee. Future training
courses will revolve around the training manuals, currently Levels 1 and 2 have been completed. At
the end of the training process with umpires having worked through the training manuals completing
all the requirements they will then be required to register with NOAS in order to obtain Level 1
accreditation or advance to the next level. This will require a registration fee of $10.00.

ACCREDITATION ADVANCEMENTS
19 umpires were awarded level 1 or advanced their current level of accreditation. Under the NOAS
training and accreditation packages the opportunity for affiliates to assess level 2 umpires may
become an option. There will certainly be more emphases on both level 1 training and assessment
with the use of the training package and the requirement for umpires to have their work checked and
signed off on as complete each component of their training. The use of a training package for level 2
will have similar requirements and will require umpires to be assessed in various competencies.
Affiliate associations will have greater control and responsibility over the development of their umpires
than ever before.

CONCLUSION
In conclusion I would like to thank my committee for the work and effort that they have given over
what has been a difficult 12 months. I especially thank Haydyn Wood for stepping into the
rostering/ACC representative role when it become obvious that Dave Roberts was not going to be
able to return to his role as soon as we had hoped. We certainly hope to see Dave back on the
diamond just as soon as he is able.
The re-introduction of men’s softball to West Beach on Friday nights has been a huge boost to our
ability to provide better training and develop for some of our senior umpires. I look forward to seeing
more teams involved and in particular the introduction of a junior competition.
The next 12 months will see a number of challenges ahead of us with the introduction of NOAS
accreditation and the extra work that will be required to see the successful introduction of the new
training packages. There will also be a requirement for all existing umpires to become registered as
the training competencies are established for each level and they have met the requirements for the
various levels.
The continuation of the green shirt program and its integration with the NOAS training package to
further build on and strengthen the quality and numbers of our umpiring pool so we are better able to
service all aspects of the game.

SCORING
2010-2011 saw South Australia return to the National program, hosting the Under 17 Boys. This was certainly the most challenging scoring situation South Australia has ever seen, with the increased responsibility for not only a “paper” scored tournament, but also the full technical requirements including electronic scoring of games and synchronised web updating of the play by plays, and overall web reporting to the Softball Australia results site. Due to the limited number of National Championship accredited scorers in South Australia, it was necessary to utilise interstate Level 4 scorers to supplement the scoring program particularly with the technical components. Special thanks to the SA contingent who assisted me – Derek Roberts (paper/technical); Jill Williams (SALSA database).
I am delighted to advise that SA proudly exceeded the expectations, to the extent that the Finals play-by-plays were able to be uploaded each half-innings throughout the games.
Accredited Scorers in SA is as follows:
This is a significant increase of 69.5% from last year’s accreditations. Notwithstanding the increase, South Australia continues to have insufficient staff with NSC quality assurance at Nationals. This presents a problem which must be addressed if South Australia is to be able to support future nationals without needing the financial impost of bringing in the skill sets we do not hold here.
Updating
Within the ASC NOAS program, scorers are coming into their first updating period (4 yearly), which requires all scorers are required to demonstrate ongoing competency of their level, in addition to undertaking a rules examination. For Level 4, where this has not been gained at National tournaments, submission of scored games will be sought to be assessed to ensure current and continued competency. This is part of the quality assurance of the entire program. Note that this updating process is facilitated through the SAO online website – so scorers are urged (if they haven’t done so) to ensure their contact details are accurate. (Statisticians who have not updated are recorded as expired at their last level held and do not appeared in the statistics provided.) For those who have made the step to the new ASC program – thank you for showing your interest. For those not transitioning their accreditation to the new program, the way forward now can only be through re-demonstrating competency.

Accreditation Courses
Mount Gambier, West Torrens, Sturt and Glenelg were active in promoting the scoring program this year.
A particularly big pat on the back to Mount Gambier who dedicated a full weekend, and finished with a further 16 - Level 1 scorers, 6 - Level 2, and 3 - Level 3. It was an amazing effort with significantly high interest and outstanding results in the exams.
The following accreditation courses were conducted this season: 2 - Level 1 courses (Mt Gambier and Adelaide) 2 - Level 2 courses (Mt Gambier and Adelaide) 1 - Level 3 course (Mt Gambier) If is noted that Level 1, 2, and 4 courses in Adelaide were scheduled, but cancelled due to insufficient interest. If is disappointing that no other affiliates took up the offer to conduct regional clinics.

Where a suitable candidate is located in regions, it may be possible to accredit them to lecture the Level 1 scoring programs.

As advised last year the Association undertook a review of the adopted accounting treatment of the lease agreement on the Association's Club House building. The review incorporated an analysis of the Australian
Accounting Standard (AASB) 116 Property, Plant and Equipment to determine the correct accounting treatment for the building asset. As lease terms are still being negotiated, the Association has elected to continue to account for
the building asset as has been done in previous years. Should the Association, however, consider it now be appropriate to amortize the buildings, it would create a significant expense as one lump sum or over the period of
the lease

I have audited the attached financial statements, being a special purpose financial report, of Softball
SA Incorporated, for the fourteen months ended 30 June 2011. The officers of the Association are
responsible for the preparation and presentation of the financial statements and all the information
they contain. I have conducted an independent audit of the financial statements to express an
opinion on them to the members of the Association.
The financial statements have been prepared for distribution to the members. I disclaim any
assumption of responsibility for any reliance on this report or on the financial statements prepared as
a special purpose financial report to which it relates to any person other than the members, or for any

My audit has been conducted according to Australian Auditing Standards to provide reasonable
assurance whether the financial statements are free of material misstatement. My audit procedures
included examination on a test basis of evidence supporting the amounts and other disclosures in the

These procedures have been undertaken to form an opinion whether the financial statements present
fairly according to Australian Accounting Standards relevant to a special purpose financial report and
