The Chamber AmbassadorsGreat Resource for BusinessBy Kathleen Stafford, PACC Ambassador, Pongo’s Kitchen & Tap

How many times have you thought to yourself what is a Petaluma Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassador anyway and what exactly do they do?

Well I’m here to tell you we are a group of people who volunteer our time to help orchestrate lots of activities within our wonderful city of Petaluma. We all live and work in our community; we are business owners, entrepreneurs, employees, moms, dads, and PTA members, just normal everyday people who are passionate about Petaluma and

the success of our local businesses and employers.

The Petaluma Chamber of Commerce is a great resource for businesses. Being a business here in this town, it’s a must to join the Chamber. They have a directory that is updated annually that lists your business and contact information. They give you a platform to host Business After Hours which is a great way to bring other Chamber members and guests into your business in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. You will see many Ambassadors greeting you at the door.

Another great resources is

the Chamber’s website, www.

petalumachamber. com, that is updated

regularly and that gives information

about business and local events.

So the next time you see one of us

with our Chamber Ambassador name

tag or the Blue Ambassador Ribbon

come up and say hi, or better yet wait

for us to come say hi and welcome you.

After all, that’s what we do best. And

if you are a dynamic, outgoing and fun

member of Petaluma then perhaps you

would like to be an Ambassador, too.

Contact The Petaluma Area Chamber of

Commerce at 707-762-2785.

2012 Was a Good Year for Chamber

By Katie Kerns Davis, President,

Petaluma Area Chamber of Commerce

As we close out 2012 and look ahead to 2013, I am proud of the Chamber’s many accomplishments this past year.

As our local economy slowly improved, we witnessed some serious strengthening of our local retail presence with the City’s approval of two major shopping centers – the Regency/Target center on East Washington, and the Deer Creek Village/Friedman’s Center on North McDowell. The Chamber played an active role in support of both of these shopping centers, and both staff and Board members were a vocal presence at a number of City meetings.

Our community, and particularly those residents living east of the freeway, has long clamored for the opportunity to shop at places like Target or Friedman’s without needing to drive to Rohnert Park or Santa Rosa. Our city government has long suffered from a shortage of sales tax revenues, ranking near the bottom in Sonoma County in money

received from taxable sales, year after year. Approval of these two projects was a major plus in helping keep tax dollars at home.

A major success for both the Chamber and local business last year was the City Council’s decision to reduce a number of the existing development impact fees that were proving to be a deterrent to a speedy local recovery. The action was initiated by a request from the Chamber, and moved forward with Chamber input as the City Council deliberated the cuts in fees.

Already, according to published reports, the reduction in fees has led to a resurgence in applications for new construction, meaning more jobs, more City revenues, and a healthier economy.

The separation of our former Government Affairs/Economic Development Committee into two separate committees has worked out well. The Government Affairs

President’s Message

Committee continues to focus on pending governmental actions. They were instrumental in encouraging City Hall to make significant reductions in development fees, and to analyze and make recommendations on a number of State ballot propositions.

The Economic Development Committee is addressing the opportunities for healthy business growth. Their efforts, working closely with the City’s new economic development director, have resulted in speeding up the permitting process. The group is also working to help create a flourishing artisanal food manufacturers industry in Petaluma.

Last year, we made a concentrated effort to get maximum benefits from internet technology including revamping our website to include a broader range of business opportunities for our members. We also began using social media for members’ benefits,

such as posting meeting notifications and reminders on Facebook.

These are just a few of the highlights. Your Chamber remains in good financial condition, and membership and enrollment in the President’s Circle are at excellent levels. We are well equipped to continue to work diligently on your behalf.

As we get set to meet the challenges of the new year, we enter 2013 confident of a good working relationship with our local government, a steadily improving local economy, and a financially stable Chamber. Please continue to keep an open dialogue with us of how the Chamber can best help you. We look forward to continuing to serve you in 2013!

I wangled my way into “big time” advertising as a storyboard artist, e.g., I drew cartoons to illustrate TV commercial concepts. Then I left the advertising agencies in 1985 and started the first of the businesses that ultimately lead to Rustad Marketing,

In the last few years I’ve confined my cartooning to the editorial work and have tended to hire other artists to do the art for ads and such - with the exception of cartoon mascots. I’ve tried to carve out a niche for that work - see www.mascotcartoon.com

From 2004 until 2012 I was the editorial cartoonist for the Petaluma Argus Courier. The cartoons also appear in steve-rustad.blogs.petaluma360.com

I am currently a member of the American Association of Editorial Cartoonists and the National Cartoonists Society.

Wake Up to Launch 7-MonthSeries of Digital Workshops

The first of a series of workshops designed to help Chamber members improve their digital presence will constitute the January program for Wake Up Petaluma, scheduled for January 22 at Rooster Run Event Center.

The Chamber and the PD Media Lab are co-sponsoring a series of seven monthly hands-on, pressure-free seminars to help Chamber members better connect to their customers locally and world-wide, according to Chamber CEO Onita Pellegrini.

“From the need for a cutting-edge desktop and mobile site to ongoing support for the latest tools to help search engines find your business to navigating the maze of social media avenues, there’s no time to waste in improving your digital presence,” Pellegrini said.

Cost for the breakfast is $20 for Chamber members, $25 for non-

members. Reservations needed – call 762-2785. After the January breakfast kick-off, all seminars are free to Chamber members.

The Sponsor for the January event is the Press Democrat.

“For local businesses, the digital climate and customer expectations can change frighteningly fast. We’ve heard from many local businesses that they want to learn how to get ahead of the curve and stay there, so they can focus on growing their businesses and not waste time on so-called solutions that don’t bring in customers,” said Deborah Ramirez, Senior Interactive Specialist with the PD Media Lab.

The first session will provide an overview of customer conversion strategies and digital innovation trends.

Following the kickoff session, the Chamber and PD Medial Lab staffers will host six more sessions – one per

month – drilling down into every aspect of digital marketing. Topics will include cutting-edge web development, search engine optimization (SEO), mobile site design and conversion, reputation management, social media outreach, and content development and strategy.

Attendees to these informational seminars will receive helpful take-home guides to apply to their own businesses as well as learn about tips, trade secrets,

and even traps to avoid. Attendees who attend every session in the series will receive official certification as “PD Media Lab IMAGE-qualified.”

Attendees will also qualify for discounts and special promotions on services offered by PD Media Lab as well as personalized consultations based on the needs of their existing websites and businesses.

PD Media Lab, online at www.pdmedialab.com, is a full-service digital advertising and marketing agency. The company, which is part of the locally-owned Press Democrat Media Group, provides a comprehensive range of services, including website development and hosting, search engine optimization and marketing, mobile and tablet platforms, social media and reputation management, custom content creation, email integration and outreach, e-commerce, video production, and other digital advertising solutions.

Lab staffers include specialists from new media, programming, SEO, marketing, mobile design, technical support and sales. Packages are available either in conjunction with existing Press Democrat and pressdemocrat.com and Yahoo.com advertising or separately through a wide range of services.
