3. OverviewThis report will focus mainly on solar PV installations within South Africa. However for the contractor listings, the total capacity will be for all systems installed by a specific contractor throughout Africa and not just SA. For more on contractors, please see the section titled “Contractors” In an effort to reduce the length of the report, the research methodology can be viewed as a separate item by clicking on the “research methodology” link or by visiting http://pqrs.co.za/pqrs-pv-research-methodology/.
Integrity of source data has been confirmed by The Western Cape Government, Eskom, CPUT and other institutions during the period 2016-2017.
3.1.Research methodology Please refer to the methodology for more information on: • Missing data, • Questions related to contractors, and • How listings are obtained.
3.1.Margin of error A safe and realistic margin of error for this report is considered to be 10% up or down. More on error margins can be seen in the research methodology.
3.2.Database
3.2.1.Nr of installations This report was compiled using sections of the complete database which consisted of 138654 installations (at the time of publishing the report) most of which are situated in SA. Approximately 40 installations in the database are utility scale PV plants leaving the remainder to be privately owned rooftop, ground-mount and carport PV plants.

3.2.2.Countries Information for SA only; was used in order to compile report graphs and content as reflected in sections 4 and 5 below. The complete database includes solar PV installation information from **16 African Countries i.e.- Botswana - DRC - Egypt - Kenya - Lesotho - Madagascar - Malawi - Mozambique
- Namibia - Nigeria - Principi Island - South Africa - St.Helena - Sudan - Tanzania - Zambia
**Names above, appear in alphabetical order across two columns
3.2.3.Generation capacity At the time of issuing this report the generation capacity of the complete database was 1 193 124,7kWp (1,2GWp) which included utility scale installations from REI4P Window 1. For variation in AC and DC generation values please see the research methodology.
Section 4 and 5 of this report considered C & I, residential and agricultural installations for SA only and disregarded installations listed in other countries as well as utility scale installations using a base of 250,33MWp for SA only in ranges 1 to 5
3.2.4.Sectors Unless indicated otherwise, this report includes installations from all sectors being Agricultural, Residential and Commercial-and-industrial.

3.2.5.Ranges Ranges are also explained in greater detail in our research methodology. All solar PV installations have been broken down into ranges in order to allow easy categorization. There are 6 ranges in total starting at 0 for very large utility scale plants and ending at 5 for very very small PV systems.
" Please see table 3 for more detail on this pyramid
"
Range PV System Sizing
0 >5MWp of which most are utility scale systems
1 Equal to or >1MWp and =<5MWp
2 >100kWp and <1MWp
3 >10kWp and =<100kWp
4 >1kWp and =<10kWp
5 <1kWpTable 3

4. Equipment
4.1.Brands
4.1.1.Mounting structure brands Names indicated below is a reflection of the way in which installation data was submitted by installers and the type of information contained within the database.Names displayed alongside another brand may be due to different brands being used on the same installation. These name combinations could be due to roof type, roof structure or installer preference. Mounting structure brands presented below are indicated in alphabetical order.
- 3M VHB - AC/DC - Chikolar - Clenergy - Clever Devices - Clipset - Custom - GRS - IBC - Illaanga - KD Solar - Knubix - Lizard - Lizard / 3m VHB - Lock Solar - Pia solar - PLP - Renesola - Renusol - Romano Structure - Rubicon
- S Flex - S flex/Stainex - Safintra - Schletter - Schletter, Lizard, Renesola - Scnetler FS2 - Solar MD - Solarstrut - SolarWorld - SolarWorld & S-Flex - Solsquare - Stainex - Terrafix - TKRS - Tritec SA - U/fix - Valsa - K2 - Unknown - Zephyr

4.1.2.Mounting structure brand - market presence Names of brands that do not appear below are not reflected in the database. Diagram 3 below therefore reflects the representation of brands within the dataset. It is possible for brands to raise their profile within the dataset by sharing installation information. The largest portion of “missing information” is contained within Range 4 (1-10kWp) and range 3 (11-100kWp) installations. The sample set of data used to generate Diagram 3 below had a combined generation capacity of 63MW. The shortfall of data between the total generation capacity (250MW) used for this report and the sample set (63MW) for this section of the report was not submitted by installers and captured as “unknown” in the dataset.
