“Dulce Et Decorum Est” (1920) by Wilfred Owen

• Directions: First, annotate the poem! See white board and handout on website for more info.

• Poetic Technique: POINT OF VIEW– What is the point of view (POV) presented in the

opening lines? What is the impact of that perspective on how we, as readers, react?

– Eventually the POV changes—where does it change? How can you tell? Is it clear where the change takes place? What is the impact of this change on our response to what the poem is telling us?

• Poetic Technique: POINT OF VIEW– At a certain point in the poem, the speaker begins

to address a real or imagined listener. In what line does this start? Why do you think the poet chose to include such an address in the poem? What is this part of the poem attempting to accomplish?

– Can you tell what the speaker thinks of his listener? If so, which words show his attitude?
