Father Mike’s Musings…the sacrament with greatest healing power

Dear Family, This weekend, one week after the return to public Masses after your deprivation from the Holy Eucharist, we gather to celebrate Corpus Christi, the “Body of Christ”. As you may know, I see nothing coincidental or accidental about this reality. While “corpus” means “body,” we receive the whole Jesus; Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity in Holy Communion. St. Thomas Aquinas, oddly referred to as “dumb ox,” had written extensively about the Holy Eucharist. In a work on the occasion of the Feast of Corpus Christi, he observes “No other sacrament has greater healing power; through it sins are purged away, virtues are increased, and the soul is enriched with an abundance of every spiritual gift.” As we have begun a gradual return to Masses and Holy Communion, central to each Mass, we return to Jesus, Really Present in Holy Communion, who brings us healing and abundant spiritual gifts. After several weeks of isolation, are we not truly needy? As we celebrated the beautiful truth of God’s identity as the Most Blessed Trinity last weekend, do you believe He gives you all that you need? As we celebrate Corpus Christi this year, how hungry are you for the sacrament with the greatest healing power? While venial sins are forgiven by your receiving Holy Communion worthily, please remember mortal sins cause our unworthiness, so I invite and urge you to celebrate the Sacrament of Penance before you receive Holy Communion so you may receive worthily. Remember our long-standing practice of Eucharistic Exposition on Tuesdays; Jesus is truly God, and is worthy of adoration. Find a few minutes on Tuesdays after 8:30 am Mass until the 6:45 pm Evening Prayer and Benediction to visit Jesus as He is exposed in the monstrance on the altar. Stay for Christian Prayer and Benediction for its spiritual gifts. Peace and Love, Father Mike

A Message from Father Mike Dear ABVM Family, I am encouraged by our gradual return to Masses this Saturday at 5:00 pm; Sunday at 8:00 and 11:00 am; from Monday to Friday at 8:30 am. As some may be fearful about coming to church at this time, while others are eager to return, I offer practical and vital information. Archbishop Pérez is continuing the suspension from the obligation to come to Mass at this time. If you are afraid about returning now, remember that you are not sinning when you do not come. The 11:00 am Mass continues to be livestreamed at www.facebook.com/AssumptionFeasterville. In this restricted phase, the capacity for each Mass is 184 people, and an usher will count the number of participants; only 184 people may be in the pews for each Mass. If you are feeling sick, please stay at home, for your benefit and the safety of others. You must wear masks before you enter church, which must stay on until you leave the church. Upon entering the church, you must use the hand sanitizer in the narthex, and allow an usher to escort you to a pew; there can be no gathering in church before or after Mass. Please follow the directions from the ushers for when to walk up to receive Holy Communion and for exiting the church after Mass is finished. Please sanitize your hands as you leave the church.

For your health, the church will be sanitized this Thursday, and will be sanitized after each celebration. I am encouraged by our gradual return to public Masses and the opportunity to receive Holy Communion. We continue to pray for an end to this pandemic, protection for essential workers, first responders, doctors, nurses, and hospital employees. We pray for peace in the midst of violent protests, consolation for the grieving, healing for the injured, and restoration of livelihoods to store owners. Nothing is impossible to God.

Notice About Church Opening As we have begun the gradual return to public Masses, the church will be open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 7:30 am until noon; Saturday before the 3:30 Confessions until after Mass; Sundays before the 8:00 am Mass until after the 3:00 pm Mass; Tuesdays from 7:30 am until after Benediction.

A Message to All our Graduates of the Class of 2020 Dear Graduates from Pre-K, Kindergarten, Grade 8, High School, and College/University, I congratulate you, as you have marked another milestone in your life, and move on to continue to learn from teachers and life's experiences. You all know the tremendous importance of your parents, who had taught you many lessons before you went to school. You know the tremendous dedication of your teachers, who have worked to draw out your knowledge. I cannot even imagine how challenging your learning had been since mid-March with all the changes because of Covid-19. However, you have succeeded, and are ready to learn more! I invite and encourage continuing your lessons about God, Who loves you as a son or daughter, and your faith. Faith is powerfully helpful, as we can know that God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, the Blessed Mother, all the saints and angels are real. Allow your faith to grow, as you grow in knowledge in all subjects and from life itself. Come to Mass; go to Confession often (maybe even once a month) for God's mercy and forgiveness; pray each day, either a prayer you have learned, or just talking to God or Jesus in your own words. Please do not be afraid to join in parish activities, since our great parish can only be better when you get involved. Be safe and healthy. I am proud of you, and proud to be your Pastor. Peace and love, Father Mike

Archbishop calls young people protesting racism ‘great signs of hope’

By Lou Baldwin • Posted June 8, 2020, CatholicPhilly.com There was a dual message at the June 5 news conference held by Archbishop Nelson Pérez in the Cathedral Basilica of SS. Peter and Paul. The initial purpose was to announce resumption of the public celebration of Mass on the weekend of June 6-7 following the easing of the COVID-19 pandemic. But another tragedy, just as important, had to be first addressed. That was systematic racism, as exemplified by the recent killing of George Floyd by a police officer in Minnesota. “There is no doubt that our country and our region have been shaken to the core in the last two weeks” because of the death of Floyd, the archbishop said. “We will never be the same and frankly we should never be the same,” he said. “When it comes to acts of violent racism and the assault on human

beings who possess a life and dignity given by God, that must be respected, protected and cared for. This can never happen again.” “Yes, we say it every time it happens, but we must say it again and again and again. This can never happen again,” he said. “Racism is a sin and an evil which needs to be eradicated from our midst. “We need to come together as a community of faith to pray together for healing and recovering and for a world where we respect the gift of life; a gift given to us by God which must be respected and protected at all costs.” Archbishop Pérez called the massive and ongoing public demonstrations, at times marred by incidents of violence, that broke out in Philadelphia and hundreds of cities in the wake of Floyd’s death “great signs of hope.” “Young people gathering together for a more just society and country. For those who protested peacefully we are proud of your voice,” he said. “They want to make sure the pandemic of racism is removed from our midst.” Archbishop Pérez encouraged all the clergy, religious and lay faithful in the archdiocese to pray for peace and healing during the month of June. The archbishop also spoke about the reopening of churches last weekend for public Masses and sacraments that had been halted as a way to stop the spread of the deadly coronavirus pandemic. He said his decision to suspend public sacraments was one of the most difficult he had ever made. “It was against everything I decided to do with my life when I became a priest,” he said. “It was tough and I know that for many of our faithful it was very, very difficult.” Now as the pandemic’s restrictions subside, the archbishop said it is “time to come back to our spiritual home.” Father Dennis Gill, the rector of the cathedral and director of the archdiocesan Office for Divine Worship, explained what area faithful can expect as Pennsylvania moves into the yellow phase of restrictions as the pandemic eases. During this period according to guidelines for houses of worship approved by Governor Tom Wolf, religious houses of worship can be open but only up to 50 percent of capacity. Father Gill also reiterated the obligation to attend Mass remains suspended. The sick and the elderly should not attend public Masses yet continue to join in spiritual communion with the church with their prayers. Some adjustments have been instituted, for example face masks must be worn by the congregation except while receiving Communion. Also, distancing will continue to be observed in churches. There will be no presentation of the gifts, exchanging a sign of peace, or distribution of the Precious Blood. Also a new prayer against racism has been added to the Prayer of the Faithful.

New Arise podcast features Archbishop Pérez as first guest

Posted June 8, 2020, Catholic Philly The Archdiocese of Philadelphia has launched a new podcast series to help area faithful transition back to in-person parish life after weeks of Covid-19 restrictions. The Arise podcast explores Catholic life in the archdiocese and offers reflections on the word of God as it speaks to us in our own day. The show’s title is derived from that of the Arise initiative, a multifaceted archdiocesan effort that offers a wide array of resources for parishes in navigating the coronavirus crisis. Featuring Father Richard Owens, O.F.M. Cap., Father Eric Banecker (parochial vicar of St. Pius X in Broomall) and Gina Christian (CatholicPhilly.com), the podcast presents the truth, beauty and goodness of the Catholic faith to Catholics, fellow Christians and all those who seek something more.

The series, which is slated to run for six to eight episodes, features a two-part interview with Archbishop Nelson Perez, who shares his insights on faith amid the pandemic, his return to Philadelphia and his love of pizza and Star Trek.

Pope at Angelus: The Trinity is love in service of the world

On the feast of the Most Holy Trinity, Pope Francis tells the faithful during the Angelus that God loves the world, despite its sins. By Vatican News Taking his inspiration from Sunday’s Gospel on this, the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity, Pope Francis underlined God’s love for the world. The Pope noted that, in his brief dialogue with Nicodemus, Jesus presents Himself as “He who brings to fulfilment the Father’s plan of salvation for the world.”

God gives his only son Jesus affirms: “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life”. The Pope explained, “these words are to indicate that the action of the three divine Persons - Father, Son and Holy Spirit – is a single plan of love that saves humanity and the world.” “The world is marked by evil and corruption”, said Pope Francis, “and we men and women are sinners.”

God loves us despite our mistakes Therefore, he continued, “God could intervene to judge the world, to destroy evil and castigate sinners. Instead, He loves the world, despite its sins. God loves every one of us even when we make mistakes and distance ourselves from Him.” God the Father loved the world so much, emphasized the Pope, that, in order to save it, He gave His only-begotten Son.

The Holy Trinity “The Trinity is therefore Love, all in the service of the world, which He wishes to save and recreate”, he said. This feast day, commented Pope Francis, “invites us to let ourselves once again be fascinated by the beauty of God”, and to welcome His love which he gives to us through Jesus Christ. This is faith, continued the Pope: "letting ourselves be met by Him and trusting in Him. This is the Christian life. To love, to meet God, to seek God; and He seeks us first, He meets us first."

Pope to celebrate feast of Corpus Christi in St Peter’s on Sunday

On Sunday, Pope Francis will celebrate the feast of Corpus Christi in St Peter’s Basilica, with a Mass followed by solemn Adoration and Benediction. By Vatican News Pope Francis will celebrate Mass for the Solemnity of Corpus Christi (also known as the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ) at the Altar of the Chair in St Peter’s Basilica on Sunday, 14 June. The liturgy will conclude with exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and Benediction. A small number of the faithful, around fifty persons, will participate in the liturgy with the Holy Father. The Mass will be live streamed by Vatican Media, beginning at 9:45 Rome time.

Corpus Christi celebrations with Pope Francis Last year, Pope Francis presided at the Mass for Corpus Christi from the steps of Santa Maria Consolatrice Church in Rome’s Casal Bertone neighbourhood. The previous year, the Holy Father celebrated the Solemnity in the square in front of the parish of Santa Monica in Ostia, outside the city of Rome.Read also At the beginning of his papacy, from 2013 to 2017, Pope Francis celebrated the Corpus Christi Liturgy at Rome’s Cathedral, the Archbasilica of St John Lateran, followed by a Eucharistic procession to the Basilica of Saint Mary Major.

Origins of the Solemnity The Solemnity of Corpus Christi dates back to the 13th century. In Belgium, following the mystical experiences of Saint Juliana de Cornillon, a local feast dedicated to the Most Holy Eucharist was established in Liège in 1247. Several years later, in 1263, a Bohemian priest on pilgrimage to Italy was afflicted by doubts about the Real Presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. While celebrating Mass in the town of Bolsena, he experienced a Eucharistic miracle, when a few drops of blood were shed by the broken Host after the consecration. The very next year, in 1264, Pope Urban IV extended the feast of Corpus Christi to the whole Church.

Dogma of the Church The Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ – as it is now known – honours Jesus substantially present in the Blessed Sacrament. The truth of the Real Presence was confirmed in 1215 by the Fourth Lateran Council. Later, in 1551, the Council of Trent definitively re-affirmed the doctrine in a passage quoted verbatim by the Catechism of the Catholic Church: “Because Christ our Redeemer said that it was truly his body that he was offering under the species of bread, it has always been the conviction of the Church of God, and this holy Council now declares again, that by the consecration of the bread and wine there takes place a change of the whole substance of the bread into the substance of the body of Christ our Lord and of the whole substance of the wine into the substance of his blood. This change the holy Catholic Church has fittingly and properly called transubstantiation” (cf. CCC 1376).
