July 2004 is a special day that theemployees of Schneider ElectricSingapore will always remember.
On this day, they were treated to a rare sight fromtheir South East Asia Senior Vice-President, MrAlex Khoo. Shortly after office hours, Mr Khoodonned a T-shirt and shorts and went to work bywashing the cars of his employees at the officeparking lot. This strong show of support from thetop management was in return for the employees'support of the LULI programme, a corporate charityprogramme of Schneider Electric.
The support from the management did not justend there. On 12 September 2004, all SchneiderElectric Singapore employees, business partnersand suppliers, together with their families, cametogether for a day of great fun, laughter andenjoyment under the sun at the Big Splash forSchneider Electric Family Sunshine Day 2004.
At the event, a wide array of exciting booths
peddling everything from cookies, cakes and otherconfectionery, nail art and face tattoos, and evena fishing pond, all run and supplied by SchneiderElectric employees.
Wrapping up the Luli programme was the Children'sCharities Fair on 28 November 2004 at Ngee AnnCivic Plaza. Employees manned a food stall sellingfish balls, chicken nuggets and soft drinks.
The total proceeds of S$36,856.17 collected in thewhole year were donated to the Spastic ChildrenAssociation of Singapore, the chosen associationsponsored by the LULI programme this year.
"Giving Heart Giving Hope", the motto for SchneiderElectric Singapore for 2004 was a huge successwith a total of 750 people embracing the spirit ofjoy and hope wholeheartedly.

Vigirex residual-current relays, with associatedtoroids, measure the earth-leakage current in theelectrical installation. They provide:b residual-current protection: RH86 and RH99b residual-current protection and earth-leakage

The protection relays interrupt the supply of powerto the monitored system in the event of a fault. Theyprotect:b people against direct and indirect contactb equipment and property against fire.

Magelis XBT-GGraphic Terminals with Touch-Sensitive Screens
elemecanique Magelis XBT-G graphicterminals offer an optimised interfacesolution for control system operation.

VijeoDesigner, VJD SPUL, also processesinformation in the Magelis XBT-G terminal usingscripts written in Java. Many advanced functionsare available to enhance the speed and reliabilityof data processing: multi-language (up to 20languages) and multi-window management withpop-up windows, numerous character sets (Latin,Chinese, Japanese, Cyrillic), alarm or trend loggingand etc.
To facilitate connection to other control systemdevices, all screens in the Magelis XBT-G rangehave an identical compact housing. They alsooffer a wide variety of connection options on theside of the housing: a compact flash memory cardslot, audio output terminal, RJ45 connector forEthernet connection.

Zero Blind Time Means Continuously Metering Every CycleMetering techniques vary by manufacturer. Often, metering algorithms onlytake a snapshot every 60 cycles to perform algorithms. POWERLOGIC PowerMeters and Circuit Monitors perform metering algorithms and alarm detectionon every cycle for constant monitoring so you have accurate readings evenfor intermittent operations like welding loads.
Required Speed is Power Quality Problem Dependent - IEEE 1159Required sampling speed and alarm detection depends entirely upon the typeof power quality problem you are trying to detect. The IEEE 1159 found in thePowerLogic Meter Selection Guide, classifies power quality related problemswith sub-categories, descriptions and quantification, based on some combinationof magnitude, duration and spectral content. PowerLogic meters meet the IEEEstandards and help solve related power quality problems.
Faster Sampling Provides the Full StoryAs more data points are collected, with a higher sampling rate, the anomalycan be more accurately depicted. If a meter is sampling too slowly, an incidentcould be missed altogether, or it could miss the actual magnitude of the eventsince it could occur between samples. PowerLogic circuit monitors use asophisticated, high-speed sampling technique to simultaneously sample allcurrent and voltage channels.
From this sampling, the circuit monitor saves onboard waveform data. TheCM4000T samples at 5 MHz per channel for up to 2 ms per transient capture,recording an astonishing 100,000 samples per cycle at 50 Hz.
Similarly, the Series 4000 Circuit Monitor samples up to 512 samples per cycle,and the Series 3000 Circuit monitor and Power Meter from PowerLogic sampleat 128 points per cycle.

standards in motor control.
Designed to the continuity of service standardIEC947-6-2, the “Total Co-ordination” feature ofTeSys® model U provides maximum safety to plantand personnel in the event of a short circuit.
The patented design provides ‘no welding’ of thestarter contacts as permitted under type 2 shortcircuit conditions. This allows the production assetsof your plant to be utilised to their maximumefficiency.
TeSys® model U with its 45mm modular compactdesign performs the following functions:
Protection and control of 1-phase or 3-phasemotors:b Isolation breaking functionb Electronic short-circuit protectionb Electronic overload protectionb Power switching
Control of the application:b Alarming (warning protection function alarms,
e.g. overload pending)b Status monitoring (running, ready, fault)b Application monitoring (running time, number
of faults, motor current values)b Fault logging (last 5 faults saved, together with
motor parameter values)
These functions can be added by selecting controlunits and function modules that clip into the powerbase. The product can therefore be customisedat the last moment and simplify or completelyeliminate wiring between components usingaccessories.
Blokset, a complete range of LV Switchboardscomplying to IEC 60439-1 and PSB EMCtests (EN55011, EN61000 & ENV50204), wasrecently installed at a cocoa processingplant in Jurong for plant upgrading. Takinginto consideration the compact switch-room size,factory automation needs and coordination of finalload-list for interchangeability, TeSys® model UStarter was selected to provide the best solution.
Twelve withdrawable TeSys® model U starterdrawers were integrated in each Blokset columnto maximise the usage of the switch-room space.Each drawer contains a DOL starter of rating upto 15KW with "Total Co-ordination" specification.The starter is of modularity to enhance the feasibilityfor application adaptation. One example is themotor rating changing drastically from 2.2KW to15KW during the final stage of site commissioning,with the thermal module in the TeSys® model Ustarter as the only replacement.
Traditional starter with maximum coordination oftype 2 required all breakers, contractor, thermaloverload relay, the drawer module and its paneldoor to be replaced. This may lead to an increasein the size of the MCC or switch room at extra cost.
Tapping our local knowledge and past experiencein iMCC projects, our automation range of productswere integrated to harness the TeSys® model UStarters, soft-starter and variable speed drive tobuild another Intelligent Blokset for the localindustries by our Blokset Licensee - SMB ElectricPte Ltd.

Schneider Electric: On the Podium at the
Athens Olympicschneider Electric participated in the 2004Olympic Games in Athens, providingmission-critical electrical equipment to
distribute, control and manage the power neededto run the entire sports infrastructure and ensurea comfortable environment. More than eightOlympic venues were equipped with Merlin Gerin,Telemecanique and MGE UPS Systems productsand systems for a guaranteed, uninterrupted powersupply, so that athletes and spectators were safeand comfortable. These contracts were worth anaggregate Euro 10 million (S$21.9 million).
The Olympic VillageSchneider Electric manufactured and installed allthe electrical equipment, which managed the airconditioning systems in the Olympic Villageincluding Merlin Gerin circuit breakers and low-voltage equipment and Telemecanique contactors,overload relays, pushbuttons and soft starters.
The International Broadcast CenterOlympic events were televised live and aroundthe clock. Schneider Electric supplied safe, reliableelectrical equipment to ensure uninterruptedoperation of the broadcast facilities with 78 Prismalow-voltage switchboards, 12 Merlin Gerin capacitorbanks and a Telemecanique automation systemto control master switches and data transmissionto the building management system.
The Markopoulo Olympic Equestrian Center,the Pampeloponnisiako stadium in Patras, theSchinias Olympic Rowing and Canoeing Center,the Agios Kosmas Olympic Sailing Center andthe Helliniko Olympic Complex (baseball,softball and hockey fields)Schneider Electric supplied all the power supplysystems for these five venues, with MV/LVsubstations, medium-voltage cubicles, powertransformers and low-voltage master cubicles.
Upgrading and extending the Attiko MetroSchneider Electric guarantees high facility uptimefor the safety and comfort of users of the GreaterAthens Subway system. The installed solutioncomprises of 119 Merlin Gerin medium-voltagecubicles to deliver power for station lighting andventilation systems and for train traction systems.
Another project is extending lines 2 and 3 by 7.7kilometers to provide a link-up with the commuterrail network being built in the Athens suburbs. Therolling stock will comprise 17 trainsets that willeventually serve airport traffic as well. SchneiderElectric recently signed a new Euro 2.2 million(S$4.8 million) contract for work on the project,involving the design and installation of 123 MerlinGerin medium-voltage cubicles and 10 powertransformers to power lighting and ventilationsystems in the new stations and for train tractionsystems.
1,700 UPS systems in action in AthensMGE UPS Systems, the world leader in securedpower solutions, was also selected following aninternational call for bids to supply uninterruptiblepower supply (UPS) systems for the AthensOlympic Games.
In all, 1,700 Pulsar, Comet and Galaxy UPS unitshave been delivered, representing a total installedpower of around 4 MVA. They ensure theuninterrupted supply of high-quality power to suchcritical applications as telecom and media centers,timing systems and drug testing processes.
MGE UPS Systems has also provided theOlympics organisation with a number of MGEPowerServices™ experts, who are dedicated tothe prevention of any operating glitches, thanksto remote monitoring and emergency response.
The contract also calls for the supply of UPS unitsand additional related services as requested duringthe development of the Olympic installations valuedat Euro 1.7 million (S$ 3.7 million).
