PICTON’s GREEN SCENETip: House plants can absorb household odours & chemicals. When we buy new carpet and furniture we can experience both of these. Plants are a great way to cleanse the air around your home as they take up chemicals and odours that may be oating about. Better then spraying more chemicals on top.

Pop-up Shop Takes FlightPICTON DAWN CHORUSBy Siobain Browning (PDC Coordinator)

www.pictondawnchorus.nzEmail: [email protected]

The rst week of trade at the Picton Dawn Chorus trapping pop-up shop has been a great success. All the Goodnature traps have been sold, but luckily for us, the generous folk at Kiwibank have provided an additional $2,000 of subsidies so that we can order more Goodnature traps. However, at the price of $85 for Picton/Waikawa residents they are selling like hot cakes, so be quick!

We still have 150 of the $10 rat traps that need to nd new homes in gardens in Picton and Waikawa – so make sure you come and get your trap and convince your family, friends and neighbours to get theirs too.

Volunteer Robyn Richards shows a customer how to set the Kiwibank sponsored rat trap.

RAT TRAP NOW!!!and help make our town pest free!

It turns out that Picton isn’t the rst place to have a shop dedicated to rat trapping. Far from it – Julien Aurouze & Co in Paris has been selling pest control items from its macabre shop since 1872 and "specialise de la deratisa-tion" is their tag line. We promise we won’t ll our shop front with stued, dead rats to follow their example. At the end of the day we are here to protect the birds and we hope you too will join our growing group eort.

Icy books to read, do you?A Polar Blast is on its way to whistle through the library these holidays. Our popular annual Winter Warmers holiday programme is set to get underway on Monday 3rd July (the week before school holidays begin). All ages welcome from pre-schoolers to teens. The programme nishes Friday 21st July.

We have an exciting polar theme to inspire children to enjoy the library and reading, get creative with craft and learn about the Arctic and Antarctic.

Children don’t need to ocially register for this programme but are able to come in anytime over the three week period and receive a four visit reading challenge card. Each time you visit and take library books home you receive a stamp and bookmark. (It’s a great set of polar animal bookmarks. Have fun collecting all 12). Visits two and four mean that you can choose a little prize from our polar shop.

We will be here to help and support you – tell us about what you’ve been reading and let us help you nd your great reading adventures.

Every day of the holidays there will be a dierent DIY polar craft to enjoy with the family. No bookings required, just turn up anytime between 9am - 4pm and get creative. We have all sorts of great polar craft ideas planned. Bring your friends and family. And it’s free!! You don’t have to be doing the reading challenge to join in with the crafts.

There are two free movie afternoons planned as well. Bring a cushion. We’ll have plenty of popcorn to see you through!!

So come along and get cosy in the cold these holidays and have some fun at your library. See the timetable to plan your visits.

As we head into winter, it’s time to reect on the busy summer season we leave behind. We’re a tourist town and main trunk connection between north and south, and all residents, whether involved in tourism or not, cannot fail to notice the swell of people coming through Picton (and we may see a winter boost if our plan for an America’s Cup welcome parade comes to pass, with Picton’s Joe Sullivan a key part of the winning team!). Over these cooler months, we can enjoy the tranquillity of the town and take time out for holidays and recharging batteries. For our volunteer group the focus is on reviewing our eorts of the past 12 months, working towards completing projects and starting new ones.

Chrissy Powlesland, Chair, PS&C

QUEEN’S SERVICE MEDAL: You could almost hear the cheer go up around Picton when Beryl Bowers was awarded the Queen’s Service Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours. Huge congratulations to Beryl, who has put her heart and soul into the community and tirelessly helped shape our harbour town over several decades.

We are so proud of her achievements as an inaugural member of the Picton Smart & Connected team, on the Steering Group and several working groups. But she’s best known as the driving force behind the Picton Maritime Festival. She’s also a key player behind the annual Picton Christmas Parade, and ensures Picton remains top of mind for Marlborough 4 Fun. Descended from old Picton families, she helped open the town’s rst creche, and the Picton Playcentre on Waitohi Place, and many other activities. You name it - if it’s good for Picton, you’ll nd Beryl involved or driving it somehow!

NEW STEERING GROUP MEMBER: We are delighted to advise that Julie Kennedy has recently joined the Picton Smart & Connected Steering Group. One of her rst projects is to co-lead the newly formed Arts & Heritage Working Group (see below) alongside Richard Briggs. Julie has been a volunteer in various Working Groups since 2015. A published writer, poet and historian Julie has also been representing Picton in a wider region sense, on the Marlborough Smart and Connected Heritage Forum. We are thrilled to have her join our Steering Group and look forward to her input and expertise.

MARK THE DIARY FOR SUNDAY 16TH JULY: There’s been a strong feeling in the community that arts and heritage has not had a compelling voice in the development of Picton as a town, and that now is our time to champion these areas. Picton is at the heart of the Sounds, and has a fascinating heritage with many passionate groups and individuals either volunteering or working in this sector. We want to bring people together to form a stronger network – to build awareness of activity in the arts; and focus on aspects of our heritage that should be celebrated and preserved. Major goals of the new Arts/Heritage Working Group will be established after a Public Workshop in July. In general terms, the group aims to build greater awareness of activity in both sectors within the town and beyond.

The Working Group is co-led by Steering Group members Julie Kennedy and Richard Briggs. They invite interested people to attend a public workshop to determine priorities for the working group. Please join them on Sunday 16th July, from 2pm at Le Café.

SUBMISSIONS TO MDC ANNUAL PLAN 2017/18: Picton Smart and Connected made a variety of submissions to the Marlborough District Council 2017/2018 Annual Plan on topics such as Freedom Camping, Bike/Walk Tracks, Picton Waynding Signage, Public Spaces etc. The submissions are available from the Marlborough District Council website or you can email [email protected] for more details.

The main presentation seeking funding was for completion of the Picton to Waikawa Marina pathway, which is already getting a lot of use and great feedback from individuals and families, cyclists and walkers of all ages about the improvements to date (and a bit of frustration from those who’d like to see the safe top layer laid as soon as possible!). We have had wonderful support from Crafar Crouch in keeping the budget tight by tting work in around their other commitments, which means it takes a little longer. Even in winter it’s being used well by locals, and come summer it should oer an excellent safe short walk for visitors.

Alongside this, we sought funding for completion of waynding signage around Picton and towards the pathways – again beneting both locals and visitors – and encouraging people to explore the town. We’ll have more on the designs soon – which will have a unique character through Te Atiawa involvement.

HOCKEY SKILLS & DRILLS

We have had Dannielle from Hockey Marlborough out at Waikawa Bay School this month on Thursday’s running skills and drills for all classes. All the students really love the opportunity to get outside and run around. We have practiced hitting, dribbling and pushing the ball. We always nish o with mini games. Ryan said, “he loved the skills and games the best”. Who knows, maybe we have a future Black Stick in the school.

IN PICTON

Angle Street, PictonIn the coming weeks Marlborough District Council’s contractor Crafar Crouch Construction Picton will be replacing the sewer main in Angle Street due to the poor condition of the existing main.

This work will not cause disruption to service, however due to the narrowness of this section of road there may be disruption to trac ows.

Please allow a little extra time when leaving or returning to your property. Kerb side parking will not be permitted within the construction zone.

If you have any concerns during construction please speak to the site supervisor or the Manager of Crafar Crouch Construction Picton Ltd.

Answer found for road safety issue at Waikawa Bay Primary SchoolA longstanding request from the families of children attending Waikawa Bay School is to be answered with the formation of safer roadside space along Waikawa Road.

During the hearing of submissions on the Council’s Annual Plan, the Waikawa Ratepayers and Residents Association appealed to the Council for a footpath to be formed between the school and Turners Road. Residents’ spokesman Hiram Taylor told councillors that concerns for pupil safety needed to be addressed.

Picton councillor Nadine Taylor says issues over neighbouring land ownership and the existence of a deep roadside drain had previously complicated the matter but a cost-eective solution had now been found.

“Instead of a big drainage, kerbing and channelling project that would have been necessary for a footpath to be constructed, we’ll retain and ll the roadside to create a 50-metre grassed berm along Waikawa Road. This should make enough space for cars to pull over and give children a safe corridor to the school, without them having to walk along the edge of a busy road.”

“The community has been very patient in waiting for this road safety issue to be resolved but they’ve also been persistent in telling us that a sensible solution is needed. I’m pleased we’ve now found an answer that will create a safer space for children and parents, and one that works within the roads budget,” she said.

Marlborough Mayor John Leggett said he was happy to see Council use its existing budgets to respond to some of the relatively small infrastructure improvements which communities considered important enough to raise during the Annual Plan process.

Dog RegistrationIt is the dog owner's responsibility to ensure their dog is correctly registered with their local authority. Not only is it part of being a responsible dog owner, it is a legal requirement.

Your dog must wear a current registration tag to ensure your dog can be identied. The current 2016/2017 registration colour is blue. If your dog is found not wearing the correct registration tag it may be deemed as unregistered.

Register your dog by 1 July. For more information visit www.marlborough.govt.nz/services/dogs-and-other-animals/dog-registration

Waitohi Rugby results (17th June 2017)

A massive win for the Crafar Crouch Waitohi Premier team who beat Harlequins 59 – 10 on Lansdowne Park, at the quarter stage Quinns held a small lead but Tohi just piled on the pressure and trampled any hopes they had of a victory. Ofa Folau who was this week named in the wider Tasman Mako Training Squad ran in two tries, other try scorers were Taimi Fangatua, Callam Adams, Corey Bovey, Karlos Tautari, Taraiasi Wara, Isaac Briggs and Tim O’Malley, Tim who is also in the Mako Squad also converted 7 of the tries.

KAM Transport Waitohi Under 14 travelled to Nelson to take on the top team that side of the Hills, Wanderers have been put 100 points on teams on several occasions this year so although hopes were high many including myself thought this might be Waitohi’s rst loss. I need to apologise to the team for doubting them, by all accounts the team lifted and played the best they have all season running out 36 – 19 winners.

By Sam Swain

Waitohi Rugby Club

I was lucky enough to watch the Fresh Choice Cars Waitohi Under 12 team play on Endeavour Park, they started slowly against Moutere who are the other strong team in the competition, conceding three early tries to trail 19 -0 before turning on the afterburners to run out 24 – 19 winners.

The Coventry Cars Waitohi Under 10 side were just pipped by Moutere at Spring Creek.

The Hitec Automotive Under 9’s playing at home managed a 10 try to 7 victory over Central, Ryan Quinn and Malachi Manu both scored three tries, Ocean Baker ran in two and Harlem Stammers and Caleb Robertson also dotting down.

The Picton Motordrome Waitohi Under 8’s lifted their game to beat Central 7 tries to 3, again playing better than before.

The Merv Scott Decorating Under 7 team remained unbeaten all be it with a Bye.

The Picton Sportsworld Under 6 kids travelled to Spring Creek and narrowly beat Moutere.
