Shan-Shan Guo,

Brand Management Office

As 2016 draws to a close, we’ve received good news to conclude the year’s hard work.

Over the past year we continued to actively participate in international brand activities, conveying Delta’s dedication to environmental protection and energy saving and integrating business development with corporate social responsibility . The company invested higher R&D expenses than average in the industry to proactively expand into new businesses. As the result, Delta is chosen as one of Taiwan’s Top 20 International Brands for the sixth consecutive year. In the past year, Delta’s brand value increased by 13% and we are the only business to have double digit growth for four years in a row. This issue of “Brand Circle” features live coverage of the award ceremony. We invite you to share the joy that belongs to every Delta employees!

Advances in technology have changed the face of traditional learning, and our display solution business unit’s Novo series has taken the opportunity and obtained fruitful results in Europe and the U.S.. Valrovina Primary school in Italy introduced the NovoPro collaboration system to address the issue of insufficient pupils due to emigration. In the U.S., we partnered with Purdue College of Education to develop learning platform NovoAssured, turning every classroom into a digital, interactive learning laboratory. At the same time, Communication Key Account Business Division of DGC utilized the One Delta sales platform synergy to bridge fields and secure China’s portable projector bid successfully with a fantastic performance. “Special Report” combines these three examples to share successful experiences.

ELTEK, who joined last year, has already successfully integrated with Delta in all areas, with an impres-sive NOP (Net Operating Profit). We interviewed the General Manager of TPSBU, Kelvin Huang, to discuss the pivotal role he played in the cross-regional and cross-cultural merger. “Brand People” will have more in-depth coverage.

The Paris Agreement that we have been keeping track of has passed the threshold of ratification and become effective on November 4th. However, four days later, the election of Donald Trump sent an unexpected blast in the community. The Deputy CEO of the Delta Foundation offers his insightful analy-sis of the current situation in “Brand Academy”. At the same time, the Delta Foundation also sent observers to the COP22 in Marrakech, Morocco, bringing back the latest news on the rules and methods of implementing climate agreements. For those who are concerned about global warming, don’t miss out on this issue’s “Eco Diary”.

The advance of technology is overturning traditional learning. Vivitek and its Novo series products in cooperation with the Purdue College of Education and Vivitek’s distributor Starin have released the Novo Assured learning platform to provide professional interactive learning development. In Valrovina Primary School, Italy, the Vivitek NovoPRO wireless collaboration system puts students as the center of learning and has successfully transformed a primary school that had an enrollment crisis. In the China Region, a Delta GreenTech China (DGC) Telecom VIP Customers team fully maximized the synergy of the One Delta cross-selling platform to win a China Mobile’s Projector tender bid with the Vivitek high-end commercial projector. This Special Report introduces these three success stories in depth. Don’t miss it.

The advance of technology is overturning traditional way of education, putting the teacher and student as the center of learning.

Vivitek has successfully collaborated with the Purdue College of Education and Vivitek distributor Starin to develop NovoAssured Learning, a program that goes with the Novo platform. The program sets guidelines through professional development and community support to integrate personal or group sharing of lessons, exercises and quizzing. NovoAssured Learning amplifies a teacher’s proven professional skills with collaborative methods. Today every classroom, filled with student devices, is a digital learning lab.

The Novo platform expands on all those devices to allow interactive sharing like never before. The results are teachers creating instructional innovations and greater student engagement. The best technology tools affect behavior, thinking, and education. The best education technology (EdTech) tools affect teaching and learning methods. This is what the NovoAssured Learning program seeks to provide. A NovoAssured teacher community forum provides assistance and the ability to contribute lessons users have found effective. NovoAssured advocates are encouraged in their transformation through a reward and recognition program. Perdue University learning design experts helped form the program. Besides adoption, the NovoAssured program seeks return on investment (ROI). In the past, administrators, academic technol-ogists and other decision makers, have made technology investments but have only seen a marginal contri-bution to improving a teachers’ abilities. With scrutiny and prudence in budgeting now, the technology spend needs to be assured of an impact. The steps within the NovoAssured Learning program do that.

Often there are early adopters in EdTech, the teachers who have an inclination to affect change. In the program, these advocates can be fostered as individual teachers, who decide to acquire a single user partic-ipation with e-learning, we call them NovoPeers. Or a school may enter a Pilot Program, where a set of Peers and are outfitted to get the complete professional development training with the intention to model to others in the school.

In the last 15 years, technology has revolutionized education. No longer is it restricted to being in the ‘com-puter room’. Today, it’s at the heart of the learning experience for students of all ages.

Technology’s prominence is in evidence at the Valrovina Primary School in the Veneto region of Northern Italy. Home to 71 students aged between six and ten, the school is an excellent example of how technology is being used to help teachers and pupils alike to share and generate ideas, content and, of course, knowl-edge. Not only do the pupils and staff benefit from technology, but the school’s future has depended on it. Some years ago, the small community of Valrovina was gravitating towards the city, meaning that there were fewer pupils attending the school. To address this grave situation and the risk of the school’s closure, the teaching staff decided to invest in technology to maximse the quality of their teaching while enriching the learning experience for pupils. This investment in technology—in conjunction with a dedicated bus service to and from the remotely located school—has been applauded by parents and has transformed its fortunes. Today, more than half of the school’s pupils now travel in from the city.

Helping to facilitate this sharing environment is the Vivitek NovoPRO wireless collaboration solution. The NovoPRO enables instant wireless connectivity to a projector and wide device compatibility for up to 64 simultaneous participants. Thanks to its flexibility, NovoPRO can be used with a standard projector, white-board, monitor and any make or model of interactive touch projector.

Valrovina Primary School teacher, Anna Mancuso, explains more: “The great thing about NovoPRO is that it puts the student and the teacher at the center of the lesson, and not the projector system. This means that students and teachers can continue to work from their desk with their device, sharing their work easily and effortlessly.” She added: “I think solutions like this point toward the school’s future in terms of the types of learning and teaching aids we have in the classroom.”

NovoPRO’s depth of functionality and flexibility have helped the school respond effectively to the popular Bring Your Own Device model thanks to its ability to connect up to 64 devices simultaneously, whether they are iOS, Android, Windows or Chrome tablets, phones or laptops using WiFi. Whether it’s a teacher explaining the study goals for the week, or students sharing homework results with their fellow classmates, NovoPRO makes it quick and simple for teachers and pupils alike to connect and share across multiple platforms. Anna added: “Even though we were keen to adopt a BYOD model, previously we had to invest a lot of time creating materials that were compatible with all devices. With NovoPRO we have guaranteed cross-platform compatibility which is so beneficial on many levels.”

The students and the teachers at Valrovina also benefit from NovoPRO’s ability to project any device’s display in real time for video streaming and file sharing. Meanwhile, key functions such as on-screen annotations as well as web browsing are all enabled to increase participation and collective creativity. Importantly, NovoPRO enables the teacher to remain in control, and they can lock all student device screens to keep the focus on the subject being taught. Anna pointed out: “I really appreciate the fact that NovoPRO provides me with control over the students’ content. Knowing that they are being observed, means they work diligently and responsibly but without strict control.”

Needless to say, NovoPRO is compatible with all of Vivitek’s digital projectors which provide ease of use and reliability in the classroom for teachers, as well as a great visual learning aid for students. The interactive education portfolio also features 3D technology and is available with short-throw and ultra-short-throw projec-tion lenses to avoid shadows on the screen and efficient use of a space-limited classroom.

The business unit received good news in August that Vivitek, a first time bidder led by the Communication Key Account Business Division of DGC, was successfully selected for the “China Mobile Communications Corporation - 2016 Centralized Procurement of Projectors”. This resulted later in the sale of nearly 2,000 projector units to China Mobile Communications Corporation. It’s the first successful attempt of a product line crossover for the Communication Key Account Business Division of DGC and also the first large-scale sales breakthrough of the DSBU (Display Solutions Business Unit) in the communication industry.

After a stage of rapid growth, the communication power market has experienced slowing demand in recent years. The Communication Key Account Department of DGC that has been chiefly engaged in power supply sales is also facing sluggish sales growth. The company’s executives expect the team can explore new sources of growth, import Delta products within existing business areas, and constantly look for opportuni-ties to expand new markets with existing integrators and agents. Peng Liang from the Telecom VIP Custom-er Team thinks that success lies in preparation. “We have been devoted to introducing new products, so our early-stage preparation was sufficient. We were quickly ready after learning of the bid information in late May this year”, he says.

Differences in professions can be worlds apart and a new opportunity can be a new challenge. “Our sales target is China Mobile Communications Corporation who we are familiar with, but we faced something we had never experienced before”, Peng Liang recalls, “Product parameters and bidding document preparation requirements were totally different from those of power supply products. The client is the same, but the relationship was completely different. Our rivals were Epson and NEC, which we had never competed with before and knew little about”.

The product sales crossover also led to the crossover of difficulties. China Mobile requested that bidders must be manufacturers or agents. But the DGC is neither manufacturer nor Vivitek agent. Peng Liang says, “We intro-duced ourselves as One Delta, but how to make China Mobile recognize our company really stumped us”. At the critical moment, support teams ranging from the display system product department to finance department and from Vivitek to the East China Region of DGC responded promptly and made joint efforts. The inter-department and inter-unit cooperation helped to successfully resolve the problems that troubled Peng Liang.

Peng Liang is deeply grateful while recalling the bidding process, “It was the successful cooperation among various levels of the company that allowed our brand that was new to the communication field win China Mobile’s centralized procurement for projectors.” Mr. Jeff Fu, general manager of the display business depart-ment recognizes the team efforts, “The cooperation clearly showed the crossover sales synergy under the One Delta framework and the win-win situation can be created for customers using Delta’s advantages and effective cooperation from the product end to the business end.” Mr. Donald Yu, managing director of DGC, also encour-ages the teams, “Each business colleague can learn and make use of Delta’s rich product lines, global resources and R&D platform to acquire capabilities for expanding new business territory. Limitations come from our heart. I hope each member of DGC will always maintain the attitude for a breakthrough, think outside the box, and seek new sources of growth in the changing market environment.”

Peng Liang led the Communication Key Account Business Division to win the projector bidder of China Mobile.

The National Taichung Theater has been incorporated into the business scope of National Performing Arts Center, Ministry of Culture, where many large-scale international performances will be held in the future. We still remember vividly that in late 2014, the team of Delta Display System Integration (DSI) applied 16 sets of 20,000-lumen DP high-end projectors which in combination with 4 sets of multi-media computers to produce the largest individual building projection on the outer wall of National Taichung Theater whose width exceeds 120 meters. It was a masterpiece of dazzling and magical 3D light sculpture on the outer wall of the building, which has won a great deal of favorable comments.

The new building of the National Taichung Theater has been put into trial opera-tion since August 26th and its very first exhibition is Toyo Ito’s Theater Dream – Concept Architecture Exhibition. Toyo Ito cooperates with DSI team again to plan immersive fused projection in the confined space. They applies 8 sets of Vicitek D5010 6,000-lumen projectors and adopted curved wall design in the exhibition site fully to display the perfect fusion between technological breakthrough and artistic application, thus truthfully realizing Mr. Ito’s organic concept of architectural design.

This exhibition combines light/shadow with science, digital technology with arts and theater with architecture to create a new perspective between the reality and virtuality. During the early planning stage of the exhibition in early 2016, DSI team and the curator communicated with Mr. Ito to understand his expectation and requirement for the exhibition. Mr. Ito wishes to fill the entire cave space with images by means of organic projection. The projected architecture concept films are played randomly instead of following a time-sequential script. Each projec-tor and video production shall be amended according to the changes of focal centers and images on different curved walls. As the curved walls create the space characteristic of lack of right angles space, it is especially difficult to adjust the projector and the video production really requires DSI team, a professional and diligent partner who made amendments constantly during the test to give a perfect performance.

Delta dispatched its most senior engineers to take charge of the fusion projection project in Taichung. Owing to the features of image and space as well as irregular surfaces and edges, we had to give up traditional fusion software and adjust and correct the seams of all the images contained in the projected space inch by inch manually on the basis of customer requirements. Finally, images break through the limitation of curved walls and display the brand new organic relationship between curves and lines, magic changes of arcs and geometric objects and fun chase of colors and light/shadow, thus bringing the projection technology into full play. The architecture exhibition has also been turned into spiritual wavy reflection by means of projection technology. The Delta DSI team made great efforts to achieve the success of the exhibition; the results clearly show the respect these unsung heroes have given to artistic works.

Building mutual trust and facing growthtarget challenges togetherAn interview with TPSBU General Manager, Mr. Kelvin HuangText by Brand Management Office

In 2015, Delta announced the acquisition of the major power supply manufacturer ELTEK, a global company based in Norway. It is the Group’s biggest M&A in recent years, and it has made Delta the supplier of telecom power supplies with the highest global market share. The business scope of these two major power supply makers spans across Europe, America and Asia. Despite different cultural backgrounds the acquisition was completed smoothly in just over a year, and its profit performance has been dazzling. General Manager of TPSBU (Telecom Power Solutions Business Unit), Kelvin Huang, has played a major role in the process. Don’t miss this issue’s “Brand People”, where Kelvin Huang shares his mantra of success, and passes down his experience for future mergers and acquisitions.

ELTEK was acquired by Delta Group just a year and a half ago, but it has already produced outstanding results. Besides retaining its major customers’ orders, there has also been significant growth in gross margins and net operating profits. Kelvin Huang shared his experience with us one cool autumn afternoon.

When Delta acquired the energy systems business of the Swiss company Ascom in 2003, Kelvin was a member of the acquisition team. The experience gained from that acquisition equipped him with the capa-bilities needed to interact with European partners. On top of that, his global experience for TPSBU in recent years has allowed him to master the capabilities for cross-regional management. His familiarity with the industry and market has also provided the foundation to handle the acquisition with equanimity.

ELTEK and Delta were once competitors in the telecom power supply domain. Kelvin joked that, “The only market that does not overlap with ELTEK is Norway (ELTEK’s Headquarters)!” The journey from rivalry to becom-ing family was not entirely smooth. Much effort was put on the connection of various organizations and systems. “First of all, we had to stabilize morale,” Kelvin Huang emphasized. Everything continued to operate as in the past, and stabilizing morale would facilitate subsequent discussions and future goal setting.

“ELTEK has solid operations around the world. We hoped to maintain independent operations and to be financial-ly self-sufficient from the beginning.” Kelvin talked about the initial goals they had set for ELTEK, taking one step at a time. With deeper understanding of the Group’s scale and TPSBU’s outstanding profitability, ELTEK gained confidence in setting future operational objectives. It actively set a double-digit high net operating profit target for 2017. This is three times the actual net operating profit in 2014 before ELTEK joined Delta. With stable morale and strong support from the Group, “ELTEK is now more proactive in pursuing profit.”

During this period, Kelvin proved how much Delta values its new member through concrete action. In a year’s time, he has visited ELTEK’s branches all over the world, spending more time traveling than he spent in Taiwan. In October this year, ELTEK’s German branch celebrated their 130th anniversary, and Kelvin specially invited the General Manager of Delta’s PSBG, Mr. Victor Cheng, to represent Delta headquarters and together they flew to Frankfurt to offer congratulations. Their short stay of less than 24 hours demon-strated Delta’s warmth and sincerity, which was appreciated by ELTEK colleagues.

From competitor to comrades: towards a common goal

In recent years, Delta has injected growth momentum through an M&A strategy. At the initial stage, it lets new subsidiaries operate independently. For the acquisition of ELTEK, the management team’s first task was to stabilize market share. This included adopting a double branding strategy to retain existing customers of both sides. After more than a year of implementation there were no conflicts, but instead it turned out to suit the market and their customers’ requirements very well.

“Telecom is an industry where the big players get bigger. . European customers now prefer Delta and ELTEK.” Kelvin added, “This move was not based on our subjective view. There is a necessity for the market to maintain two brands, and we are in favor of that too.” As to whether it will maintain a dual

brands strategy in the next three to five years, Kelvin feels that it depends on the company’s branding strategy. Whether continuing to adopt dual brands helps the business or whether launching another brand and promoting a different product line are best, are issues to be discussed.

Due to the nature of the telecom industry, customers normally choose to cooperate with specific suppli-ers. Kelvin has his own way of implementing market communications and maintaining customer relationships. Instead of waiting for regularly held exhibitions, TPSBU has launched a mobile exhibition truck in the vast American region to display its latest products and technologies proactively to custom-ers. Since 2014, it has travelled around America three times, and has held nearly a hundred road shows. Its objective is to get closer to customers and listen to their requirements.

From his in-depth understanding of customer requirements, Kelvin has learned to think from the market and customer points-of-view. Such thinking is also incorporated into product design.

TPSBU’s Golden Eagle, a single phase rectifier launched in 2014, was awarded the German reddot award in 2015. This year, the Golden Eagle once again won 2016 Germany’s iF design award, making it the world’s only product in the telecom power supply domain to receive two international design awards. “Actually, I merely tried to figure out what kind of products attract customers”, Kelvin replied casually, but in fact there was a lot of hard work behind it.

The Golden Eagle rectifier will be a stepping stone for the TPSBU to enter the Japanese market. Faced with a conservative and closed market that seeks perfection, what kind of product could take the market by storm? Considering that the product may be used in the bustling JR stations in Tokyo City, Kelvin decided to take a different path. He did away with the traditional telecom products’ bulky exterior design, and decided to design a product that is both fully functional and aesthetic. As a result, the prod-uct was chosen by Japan’s largest telecom operator, NTT DOCOMO. The product series has also broken into the US market, to become the preferred choice in the implementation of small base stations.

This is the 28th year since Kelvin joined Delta, and he has gained experience from production line equipment maintenance, materials procurement, and the TPSBU. He humbly said that since his field of study was not power electronics, he has a relatively wider space to pursue a variety of initiatives. When faced with different job challenges, he is courageous in setting his own path.

Leaders of each nation entreating the US to comply with regulations during COP22 in Morocco.

On November 4th, the Paris Agreement, which has been signed by 197 countries, went into effect after passing the ratification threshold of each nation, the US being one of them. However, similar to the fate of the Kyoto Protocol, less than a week later on November 8th, Donald Trump—a real estate businessman and world-renowned skeptic of global warming—was named president-elect of the United States, the leader of the second largest carbon emitting nation, for the next four years. This is undoubtedly a shock for the proponents of measures against global warming. This issue’s Brand Academy includes an in-depth analysis.

After the election of Trump, countries such as Australia and the UK are unwavering in their support of the Paris Agreement, while countries including Japan and India passed the agreement before the US election. The total number of countries that have passed the agreement has reached 110, while restricted carbon emissions have reached 70%. Even if the US does withdraw in the future, the Paris Agreement will continue to exist. If the US is to contend with the Paris Agreement, they would have to assemble an alliance to match the UNFCCC and fight against the Paris Agreement, just as the Bush administration did with the Kyoto Protocol.

What will the future of the world be like if Trump withdraws from the Paris Agreement within his first hundred days of office, as he said he would during his campaign?

First, per the regulations of the Paris Agreement, countries can withdraw from the agreement, though the procedure takes four years to become effective. This is considered a hidden safeguard from the Obama government aimed at minimizing the interference of the internal affairs of each nation on the international agreement.

The Paris Agreement does not stipulate penalties, so even if Trump does not withdraw from the agreement, he will still be able to ignore the carbon reduction goals set by the previous government and revive the coal and petroleum industries. There are no international regulations to prevent this from happening. Less than one week after the election, Nicolas Sarkozy, the former president of France who is currently running to become the next president, appealed to the Euro-pean Union to seriously consider imposing a carbon tax on American imports if the US fails to reach its carbon reduction goals. This would force polluters to pay a price and the US to play by the rules via environmental taxation.

The attitude of China is also a key factor. China representa-tive Xie Zhenhua, who participated in the UN Climate Change Conference, continues to express that China, the world’s largest investor in renewable energy, will make its best effort to prevent a global warming disaster. Even Russia, a government admired by Trump, stated its continu-ing cooperation with international forces to reduce the impact of climate change.

Trump is widely known for his disdain towards the science on global warming. He has repeatedly stated in his public speeches that global warming is a conspiracy of China to restrict the economic growth of the US. Myron Ebell, Trump’s counselor on environmental protection issues, who has been named a “climate criminal” by the environmental group Greenpeace, has openly condemned President Obama’s act of approving the Paris Agree-ment as unconstitutional. After the election of Trump, Ebell was named as the leader of the transition team for the US Environmental Protection Agency, and he is a likely candidate to become its next administrator.

Harold Hamm, oil tycoon and another close friend of Trump’s, has long been shortlisted for Secretary of Energy (DOE). Hamm is currently the CEO of Continental Resources, which owns approximately ten billion barrels of oil in its oilfields across the US. Expectations are that there will be a substantial change in the approach towards the mining of local US fossil fuels. In addition, the most likely candidate for Secretary of the Interior is Sarah Palin, the former Governor of Alaska, who was opposed to listing polar bears as an endangered species. It appears unlikely that the Trump team will be working together with international forces to face the challenges of global warming.

Other than international treaties such as the Paris Agreement that set carbon emissions regulations on a country basis, local governments, cities, enterprises, and NGOs have agreed to carbon reduction agreements and continue to operate under green competition during the slow-paced climate negotia-tions of the past. Although experts and researchers realize the impact of Trump’s election on interna-tional climate negotiations, they are not entirely pessimistic.

In a published short article “Thank you Mr. Trump!”, honorary chairman Hans Nilsson of IEA-DSM stated his opinion that the US is leaving the great opportunity of developing renewable energy and energy efficient industries to European and Asian companies. Ernest Moniz, the current Secretary of Energy of the Obama administration, stated “You can’t keep the waves off the beach. We are heading to a low carbon future,” during the UN Climate Negotiation.

The US’s withdrawal from the Paris Agreement and even the UNFCCC seem to be a matter of strategy and timing. However, it is foreseen that “Blockadia,” a left-wing movement during the Obama administration, will not be backing down in the future. Movements to block oil pipes, occupy squares, and gather assemblies to disturb large petrochemical industries will be common incidents in the streets. Climate-related environmental litigations will also become battlegrounds. At the same time, extreme weather will continue to impact the US despite political differences, bringing droughts, heat waves, extreme cold weather, and rainfall.

World carbon emissions have remained flat for three years in a row, and low-carbon economies are gradually thriving. Nevertheless, for the climate to remain within the range of safety, there is still room for improvement for each nation. The Paris Agreement is still an international gesture of goodwill and cooperation for the sustainability of all mankind. There will certainly be policy clashes after Trump takes office, but scientific facts are not determined by the positions of an individual or a political party. We will all have to bear the consequences of postponed action.

The COP22 will have limited headway under the Trump shadow

Top 10 Strategic Technology Trends for 2017Digital business is an overarching theme that covers how the blurring of the physical and virtual worlds is transforming business designs, industries, markets and organizations. Technology will be embedded in everything in the digital business of the future. Rich digital services will be delivered to everything, and intelligence will be embedded in everything behind the scenes.

Recently, Gartner released its Top 10 Strategic Technology Research for 2017. Strategic technology trends have substantial disruptive potential. Gartner’s top 10 lists highlight strategic trends with broad industry impact that aren't yet widely recognized. Gartner recommend enterprise leaders must prepare for the impacts of these disruptive trends on people, businesses and IT departments, and determine how they can provide competitive advantage.

Capabilities such as blockchains, distributed ledgers and digital twins will bring the physical and digital realms ever closer to supporting digital business initiatives. Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning are the means of inject-ing intelligence into new and existing apps and things to form the intelligent digital mesh. Relentless and ever-increas-ing security attacks require adaptive security architectures that emphasize security-aware solution design.

Digital Transformation Enabled by IoT-driven Business Models The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to connectivity of physical objects, which enables these objects to collect and exchange data. The physical objects include sensors, electronics, and other devices such as thermostats and IP cameras. The sensoriz-ing of objects or parts of an equipment/plant collects an enormous amount of data about the characteristics or environment that are linked to the business drivers of customers. The information reveals gaps and shortcomings in a customers’ delivery model which offer opportunities for upselling of new products and services to fill that gap through personalized offering. The emergence of IoT has opened up opportunities with new business models that were not possible before.

Frost & Sullivan indicated there are 5 possible types of IoT-driven business models for new revenue streams.

Model 1: Device-centricKey focuses on selling IoT devices or sold upfront. Service provided after is either free of minimal. Sometimes, customers pay an additional one-time fee to get more complex features.

Model 2: Selling DataSelling of insights generated from the use of analytics platform. Sold data typically are in the form of anonymous and aggregated data. Usually, soled data are around specific targeted segments to support marketing strategy.

Model 3: Device and/or SubscriptionThere is an upfront fee for the hardware device. A monthly subscription fee for the content, usage, or software is provided as a service.

Model 4: Volume-drivenLeverage on IoT to lower cost of customer acquisition. Aims to maximize the number of units sold or increase custom-er base. Targets the mass market to increase market share and reap economies of scale.

Model 5: Revenue SharingTie in with the concept of a sharing economy that brings more wages to people from outside of the industry. This model provides the contribution for lowering the cost structure than traditional model.

These top 10 trends are

1.Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Machine Learning

2.Intelligent Apps

3.Intelligent Things

4.Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality

Disruptive Technologies Powering New Age Consumer ElectronicsThe consumer electronics (CE) industry is experiencing rapid changes with the development of advanced products that offer enhanced functionalities targeted at improving the consumer experience. Some important megatrends are impacting the development of the new age consumer electronics including IoT, Connected Living, Quantified Self and Smart Homes. IoT is changing the interaction between consumers and CE devices. Connected living is using devices and technology to enable users to remain connected with each other and the Internet. Knowledge about a person‘s health and activity enables users to take more informed lifestyle decisions and lead healthier lives. Smart homes enable users to control and monitor various aspects of home automation, devices, and equipment using CE devices.

Frost & Sullivan highlighted 7 major disruptive technologies will power the development of new age consumer electronics.

1.Wireless Charging Wireless charging technology allows devices, primarily smartphones and wearables, to be charged without wire connections. This will enable devices to remain truly mobile.

2.Flexible BatteriesFlexible or bendable batteries are emerging as an alternative to the rigid batteries currently powering CE devices. Flexible electronics technology has been advancing rapidly, but component-level technologies have remained rigid, thus limiting the realization of fully flexible devices. Flexible batteries will largely impact wearable electronics, and futuristic smartphones most of all.

3.Touchless ControlAdvanced voice processing and human gesture recognition enable consumer-friendly Interfaces. Voice-based control will be the most prominent technology, and advancements in natural language processing will benefit the touchless interface.

4.Smart HapticsHaptics technology utilizes the sense of touch to facilitate interaction between computer users and the virtual world. The inclusion of haptics capabilities into devices enhances the richness and value of the information that is sent to the brain for further processing. This, in turn, reduces the probability of occurrence of errors and the time taken to complete a task.

5.Display and ProjectionFlexible organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display is the next generation of display technology that has the potential to revolutionize the CE market. Developed using organic semiconductors, these displays are conformal, enabling curved and flexible displays. The future CE devices can be envisioned to have foldable/rollable user interfaces. Pico projectors for wearables, smartphones, virtual retina displays, and head-mounted displays for virtual reality headsets are gaining momentum.

6.Mixed RealityMixed reality (MR) is the integration of virtual objects that interact with and respond to real world objects or stimulus. Virtual reality (VR), which places users in a virtual world, is considered a part of mixed reality and is gaining heavy traction. The primary target applications in CE include gaming and smartphones. The technology has applicability in diverse fields, including education, tourism, entertainment, and healthcare.

7.Advanced SensingAdvanced sensing features will get incorporated into wearables and smartphones with better power management and high processing capacities. These sensing technologies include Infrared Sensor, Advanced Imaging Sensor, Biosensor, Gas Sensors / Chemical Sensors and Environment Sensors.

IoT applications are affecting a large number of areas such as home appliances, agriculture, automotive, transporta-tion, building management, factory management, industrial automation, healthcare, and energy and power systems. Companies no longer compete solely on price or on coming up with new products. IoT changes the way existing and/or the same products and services are being delivered to consumers and enterprises. This changes the value proposition of a company entirely because customers are now buying something that is different from the past, and also because the payment mechanism will also be changed.

The 22nd Conference of the Parties (COP22) of the UNFCCC concluded in Marrakech of Morocco at 2AM on November 19, 2016. Before the conference, it was expected that the mechanisms for the Paris Agreement could be decided in the COP22 to allow the climate fund to be in place timely, urge the Nationally Determined Contribu-tions (NDCs) to be truly realized, and even motivate each individual country to be increasingly aggres-sive in terms of mitigation actions. However, judged from the final conference conclusions and the negotiation progress, the results of this year’s conference are not as good as expected.

The 22nd Conference of the Parties (COP22) of the UNFCCC (Photography by Yvonne Chan)

Four topics from Marrakech await real discussions next year

Near the end of the conference, the Marrakech Action Proclamation was read out to articulate the urgency to list climate action as each country’s political commitment and the necessity to ratify the Doha Amendment. The message was conveyed to world leaders (including President Trump): As the scientific evidence of global warming are indisputable, all countries should be in solidarity when taking climate action and that the Doha Amendment and the Paris Agreement must be ratified.

However, the proclamation looks more like a political draw that tries to pull everyone on the same boat. From the practical aspect, the Marrakech Action Proclamation does not help establish the mechanisms for the Paris Agreement.

As for the substantive achievements of the COP22, it depends on the final conclusions gained from negotiation mechanisms such as the APA, CMA and COP.

First of all, the APA proposed four topics at the end of the conference: guidelines of mitigation action, content and proposal guidelines of adaptation communication, transparency framework of the NDCs, and mechanism for regular global inventory. The APA requested each individual country to submit the ideas for the above guidelines and mechanism and the results they’d like to see to the UNFCCC, starting from March to May next year (2017).

From the above, it is not hard to see that the way to implement the Paris Agreement in the future is still in the brainstorming stage. Also, it is next year’s business to carry out real discussions.

As for the resolution of the CMA, it states clearly that the COP will supervise all the work plans and mechanisms in the agreement. It means, as long as a country is a party of the UNFCCC, it has to partici-pate in the discussion and review for the work plans even if the Paris Agreement is not ratified.

This resolution overturns the practice of the CMP. In the past, if a country is not a party of the Kyoto Protocol, it is only an observer in the conference and is not obliged to participate in any of the discus-sions. However, the resolution of the CMA is to try everything possible to pull all parties onto the same boat and no one is allowed to reject the discussions.

List Adaptation Fund in the Paris Agreement? There Are Opposing Views

As we all know, the financing progress for the adaption fund has always been slow and the fund is mainly supported by Germany, Sweden and Belgium. If the fund is recognized as the official fund source for the Paris Agreement, it means that, in addition to the Green Climate Fund, the developed countries must commit another sum of money to the adaption fund, which is quite a burden to many countries. However, to many developing countries in dire need, the fund is no doubt a lifesaver.

Under the discussion where every country’s position is different, the COP decided to have all countries propose their opinions for the topic - “If the adaption fund is listed as the official fund source for the PA, how would you establish the relevant policies and manage the money?” - in March next year.

The COP22, of which many had great expectations, was disturbed by the outcome of the US presi-dential election. Uncertainties were everywhere in the conference. It felt like runners who were racing towards the finish line slowed down simultaneously all of a sudden, while some looked back and even stopped altogether.

So, the negotiation progress was delayed and not much progress was made in the conference. However, the rate of global warming will not slow down for us. The delay of the mitigation action or the intentional indifference and inaction of the leader will have negative impacts that are difficult to make up.

Moreover, whether or not the Adaption Fund should be one of the fund sources of the Paris Agreement caused a huge debate in this year’s conference. The resolution of the COP has given all countries a big task.

Each year, Delta Electronics Foundation holds the energy efficiency volunteer training program and this year marks the ninth year. The first day of the training course took place at the Delta Sunshine Energy Education Base of the Taipei Sunshine building.

Trainees came from various place such as Taoyuan, Zhongli, Tainan, as well as Shanghai, Beijing, Thailand just to become this year’s Delta volunteer in order to promote energy efficiency. Some of the trainees have already joined the event for many years, whereas this is my very first time.

The training was fascinating. I learned the amount of carbon emission of different construction materials and how to reuse waste materials. For instance, tires can become air bricks, while plastic can turn into air-permeable running tracks on the sports field. Waste wood can also be reused and become wood wool, ceilings or wall insulation. The other way to save energy is to utilize a kind of natural air-conditioning which does not require electricity —the buoyancy driven ventilation, to create room for ventilation. Hot air is taken away, while cold air is brought in. This can further reduce the use of air-conditioning, while keeping the inside of a room nice and cool.

Ninety-seven percent of the houses in Taiwan are old buildings. Is there any way to make them conserve more energy? The answer is yes! What surprises me is that old buildings can save up to 50-70% of energy using some simple methods. The Ruiguang Building in Taipei is one of the best examples, it’s transformed lighting helps save a lot of electricity. Using LED lamps, adjusting the number of lights, controlling lights separately for independent switches, and making sure lights are turned off when not needed, etc., are all good ways. In addition, appeal to the employees to use stairs instead of the elevator, and to make good use of the green roof (garden on the top floor) more are also simple and feasible daily approaches to saving energy. In the midst of the course, there was fun science experiments, making the day passed by in the blink of an eye.

The next morning, I put on my backpack and got on the coach to Jinshan with rest of the group to visit the “elementary school in remote rural area” listed by the Ministry of Education - the Sanho Elementary School next to the Yangjin Highway.

With no more than a hundred students and each grade containing only one class, the school is not very big. However, there is enough land for the children to run around. I personally really like the geographic location of the school. Located in the valley snuggled by mountains, the school makes you feel embraced and secure. At the same time, the mountains are

not too near to make you feel pressured. The view also extends far, it’s like being surrounded by a green and tidy blanket of earth. There are also many tall trees on the campus, making the surrounding full of greens. It was the morning exercise session for the kids by the time we arrived that day, many trainees joined in and did the exercise together. The weather was hot, but we could feel the cool breeze.

The head of the school enthusiastically showed us around the school, and even the principal came to introduce the school in person. The reason why we came to Sanho Elementary School was because this school places much importance on environmental protection. You can see rows of solar panels standing on the eaves from faraway. What’s more adorable is that they have the Super Energy Saving Champion contest. Each month, they will see which class has the most energy saved!

After finishing the morning course at this lovely school, we had the famous local duck for lunch, as we know, choosing local food and ingredients reduces carbon footprint. In the afternoon, the presentation and completion of the volunteer training took place. The presentation of the volunteer training allow trainees work with their own team members to pretend they were already teaching elementary school children. They had to present the energy lessons they learned during these two days in an easy and interesting way. After seeing each team’s presentation, I knew that the trainees benefitted greatly from the course.

The last stop of the volunteer training for energy saving was the Do Good House in Jinshan. The coach rode forward along the beautiful north coast. After a short while, we saw from our windows two buildings looking like ant farms, and yes, they were the most renowned natural architecture, Do Good House. The house owner, Ho Chun-Hsien, kindly showed us around and introduced how he created this architecture all by himself from scratch, and how he started all with making the lighting, ventilation, dehumidifying and materials friendly to the environment.

Mr. Ho used the principle of quadratic functions and parab-olas to design the anti-earthquake architecture that has completely no structural steels as support. Currently the peripheral building is used for resting and storing farming tools. The skylight on top of the building lets natural light into the house. The lumpy walls are also helpful to disperse the light evenly. Considering the humidity will be higher in houses located by the sea, the floor tiles in the house are retro Chiri tiles without glazing. These kind of tiles have big crevices so that vapor can easily go through, which automatically regulates the humidity in the house. Meanwhile, Do Good House’s external walls are made with recycled soil mixed with cement. Mr. Ho said that walls like this can breathe, just like our skin pores, which allow natural wind to go through.

Do Good House is not normally open to visitors. I truly felt fortunate to have had the opportunity to come here. After having snacks and the pumpkin soup made by the house owner, my belly was warm, and so was my heart. While we chatted and laughed, the memorable volunteer training ended. I sincerely suggest that interested Delta employees sign up for volunteer training to promote energy saving, spreading Delta’s DNA of saving energy and reducing carbon footprint, either it is passed on to their homes or to the classrooms of elementary schools. By letting small children gain the concept of reducing carbon footprint, you can also contribute to environmental protection, energy saving and loving the earth.

Volunteers happily take a group photo for completing the training. This is alsothe most exciting moment of “conferring the volunteer vest”.

It is incredible that Do Good House, which looks like where the dwarfs in thefairy tales live, can also appear in real life and be a house that cherishes nature.

The instructor, trainees, and Mr. Ho happily take a photo together
