Do you know how to use the paint program?

Do you know how to draw using the computer?

Microsoft Windows 7 goes with a program that will help you create simple

graphics. It is called Microsoft Paint. It is a drawing and painting program that

can create, edit and colour pictures.

Paint Parts

The Menu Bar

The Menu bar has three items on the left and a Help button at the far right.

Paint Button

First on the left is the Paint Button, which opens a

very comprehensive menu, similar to that shown here,

plus a list of pictures you've recently saved. Most items

are self-explanatory, but one—Save as—  is very

important if you ever want to save a cut out without

losing the rest of your picture.

Home Tab

For nearly everything you do, you'll want the Home tab to be at the front. The

Home tab contains the Ribbon, from which tools and colours are selected.

When you're making use of the View tab, you can flick back and forth between

Home and View as often as you need to.

View Tab

Click on the View tab to bring it to the front

and you'll find a whole set of useful options

available. These can be used alone or in

conjunction with the Zoom Tool on the

Ribbon or the slider on the Status Bar.

The Tools Menu

The pencil tool can be used for free-hand drawing. In Paint for Windows7 the pencil's thickness can be changed in the Size tab to 1, 2, 3 or 4

pixels.

The Fill with color tool, or the Flood Fill tool if you like, is used to fill

an area of a single color with a different color.

To begin inserting text, click on the text tool. Your cursor changes to an

insertion bar.

With this cursor, drag to draw an oblong that

you think will be about right to hold your

text.

Now, until you've completed these steps,

don't click anywhere outside that

oblong.

The Eraser Tool  is used to erase unwanted parts of your artwork,

drawing, or picture.

The Colour Picker Tool is used to sample and match any colour in

your picture. It's especially useful when colours in the picture are

different from those on the palette.

The Magnifier Tool  can be clicked over an area of which you want a

closer view. Left clicks give a closer view. Right clicks zoom out.

Brushes Tool let you paint in various widths and textures. Widths

are controlled by the brushes and the Size Tool together, textures

by the brushes. Please remember that anything you plan to recolor

needs to have plain, solid color to begin with.

Open the Shapes Gallery by clicking the down arrow

under the Shapes picture and click the shape you want

to draw. You have to have chosen a shape before you

try to use the Outline or Fill buttons and before you

choose a line thickness.

Use the Line tool to draw a straight line. When using this tool, you

can choose the thickness of the line, as well as the appearance of it.

Use the Curve tool to draw a smooth, curved line.

Use the Polygon tool to make a custom shape with any number of

sides.

The Line thickness tool becomes active only after you have chosen

either a Brush or a Shape, so choose your Brush or Shape and you'll

then find you can click the down arrow under Size and choose a line

thickness.

the colors available whenever you are making a

picture.

The Edit Colors button takes you into the Edit Colors dialogue. Thereyou can click any color on an extended palette and click the Add to

Custom Colors button.

Use the Select tool  to select part of the picture that you want to

change.

Use Crop Tool to crop a picture so only the part you selected appears

in your picture.

Use Rotate Tool (Flip Tool) to rotate the whole picture or a selectedpart of it.

Saving Your Work

It's a good idea to save your picture as soon as you begin, then click the Save

button on the Quick Access Toolbar every few minutes.

Save Tool

When you save a new picture for the first time, you'll need to give it a

file name.

Saving a Copy—Save as

Sometimes you may have made a really good picture, want to add something

to it but worry that you might spoil it. The thing to do then is Save a Copy.

Go to the Paint button and open the menu.

Click Save as

In the dialogue box, the existing name of the picture will be

suggested. Just change it a little then click the Save button.

You will be returned to the Paint window with the copy ready for

you to work on.

Drawing Animals using MS Paint

Tools you need:

Line Tool

Rectangular Tool

Oval Tool

Triangle Tool

Polygon Tool

Curve Tool

Fill with Colour

Eraser Tool

How to do it:

1.

Open MS Paint.

2.  Start by drawing three circles. The top circle for the head, below that a

larger circle for the dog's shoulders and the smallest circle for its hind

legs.

3.  Next, draw an oval across the head to create a muzzle.

4.  Make the neck by joining the head to the shoulders.

5.  Then draw some joining lines between the shoulders and the legs to

make the body.

6.  Time to draw in the legs. Now dog legs can be tricky, especially the back

ones, so try copying the bumps and curves in the picture. Include some

ovals at the bottom for paws.

7.  Now add the ears and a tail. The ears are two triangles with a line down

the middle and the tail is a curvy line, whatever length you like.

8.  Remove some of the lines that you don't need.

9.  For your dog's face, add the eyes and an upside down triangle for the

nose.

10.  Draw a few lines onto the paws for detail.

11.  With some colours your dog is finished. You may add some background.

12.  Save your work. Name your file as follow: 020814_ your name.

A computer keyboard is an input device. It encodes information

into a program on the computer. The computer keyboard has

letters, numbers and symbols. These are called keys. The keysare put together as a group.

It is important that you learn about the group of keys as you

study typing. The position of the group of keys helps you to

easily type the words, sentences and paragraphs.

There are the letters A to Z and

the numbers 0 to 9 which are at

the left side of the keyboard. The

spacebar, Tab, Caps Lock, Shift,

Alt, Ctrl and backspace keys are

also part of it.

When you press the Windows

keys, you will see the Start Menu

THERE'S A NIGHTMARE IN MY CLOSET

BY MERCER MAYER

There used to be a nightmare in my closet. Before

going to sleep, I always closed the closet door. I was

even afraid to turn around and look! When I was safe

in bed, I peeked- sometimes.

One night, I decided to get rid of my nightmare

once and for all. As soon as the room was dark, I

heard him, creeping toward me. Quickly I turned on

the light and caught him sitting at the front of my bed.

"Go away, Nightmare! Or I'll get you!" I said. My

nightmare began to cry. I was mad, but not too mad.

"Nightmare, be quiet. Or you wake mommy and

daddy." I said.

He wouldn't stop crying. So, I took him by the

hand, and tugged him to bed. And I closed the closet

door. I suppose there's another in my closet. But my

bed wasn't big enough- for THREE!
