On The Cover
One of my great joys as Artistic Director of the Festival of the Sound
is sharing the creative spark that happens every time I contact artists
to discuss Festival programmes. This year was especially fun
because, as you will see, I have asked some friends to take the lead
in planning some of this season’s offerings. It was such a pleasure
discovering how their abundantly creative minds work. Adrian Fung,
Mark Fewer, Guy Few, Leslie Fagan, James Anagnoson and Leslie
Kinton, Joel Quarrington, James Mason and David Young have all
planned programmes close to their hearts and I am looking forward
to their concerts as much as any avid concert-goer.
This year we celebrate our 10th Festival in the Charles W. Stockey
Centre for the Performing Arts. Twenty-five days of almost
non-stop music-making fill this happy anniversary, starting with
five days specifically designed to showcase the incredible
acoustics and warm ambiance of this world-class concert hall.
We’ve got music and as Gershwin’s song goes, “who could
ask for anything more!”
It is hard for me to believe that this is the 28th Festival
I have had the pleasure of planning, but it is certainly
not difficult for me to be as excited as ever as I look
forward to the musical, social, and environmental
joys the Festival of the Sound brings to all
of us each summer. I will be so pleased
if you are able to join us!

The Sound of the Stockey — July 18 to 22
In 2003, the Festival of the Sound’s brochure was written with
great anticipation as we watched the finishing touches being put
on the building that had been so long awaited. These words from
that brochure convey the excitement: “After all those seasons of
wonderful music in the gym at Parry Sound High School, our dream
has come true. We will be taking our music, musicians and audience
with us to the Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts.
The stonework and woodwork are breathtaking in their beauty
as they take shape. But only as the music is shared, ovations offered,
minds stimulated and friends greeted will the Centre take on the
spirit that has made the Festival of the Sound so unique. There will
be choral music, a brass band, piano recitals, outstanding singers,
winds, strings and jazz, all helping us to make the Charles W. Stockey
Festival Performance Hall our own.”
And here we are in 2012, writing another brochure to invite you
to our 10th season in the hall that has come to be known as one
of the world’s finest, with superb acoustics and a warm and inviting
atmosphere. We have expanded our opening weekend to a five-day
celebration of all the wonderful sounds that have been heard in the
Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts since its opening.
In those five days, you will hear choral music, pianos, strings, winds,
brass and chamber music by such renowned performers as the
Choir of Trinity College Cambridge, the Canadian Brass, the Gryphon
Trio and the Borodin String Quartet.
Music from the Inside Out
The Festival’s series of free lectures, interviews and open rehearsals
gives you opportunities to better appreciate the music being heard
and the people that make it possible. This year, in Conversations
with Keith, you will hear two exceptional musical stories. Meet Earl
and Dinah Rosen, managers of Marquis Classics, Canada’s oldest
classical music label (July 26) and William Littler, classical music
critic at the Toronto Star for 39 years (August 10). Jeffrey Stokes
shares his insights into the late works of Schubert and Beethoven
on August 9.
The Sound of the String — August 2 to 3
Mark Fewer is known as a superbly versatile artist who loves to
perform early music, contemporary music, jazz and many genres
in between. Join him for two days of concerts that will include
the many sounds of the violin: classical, jazz, Gypsy, Mariachi and
Newfoundland fiddling.
Beethoven Sonatas
Read our brochure carefully and you will find three great pianists
playing five of Beethoven’s “nicknamed” sonatas. Can you find
Moonlight, Tempest, Appassionata, Waldstein and Pathétique?
To make it easier, they will take place from July 25 to 27 and
August 9. A mini-series for Beethoven lovers.
Island Queen Cruises
Enjoy Georgian Bay sunsets as the cruise ship Island Queen takes
a wandering three-hour route through the wild and rugged beauty
of the 30,000 Islands, a region recently designated by the United
Nations as the Georgian Bay Littoral Biosphere Reserve. These
cruises have been a highlight of every Festival season since our
inception, blending wonderful music (Celtic, Dixieland, East Coast
and jazz) with breathtaking scenery. Performances are on the lower
deck of the Island Queen and can be heard throughout the ship.
The Grand Finale — August 12
The last concert of the season, Sunday August 12 at 1:00 pm,
is presented by the Festival of the Sound to honour Margaret Boyd,
who is retiring from her long career as Festival of the Sound
Executive Director. Many of the musicians with whom she has
worked since 1989 will be donating their services to make this
concert a real celebration. There is no admission charge for
this special concert. However, we are inviting all who are part of
the Festival of the Sound “family” to give Margie a congratulatory
gift through our “Go the Distance” fundraising campaign.
This will symbolically make it possible for all the musicians who
want to participate to travel to Parry Sound and home again, a total
of 37,000 kilometres. Please see page 21 for further details.

The opening of the Charles
W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts in July of 2003 marked
the end of 23 years of dreaming, hoping, planning, hard work and
fund-raising while continuing to build a world-class summer music
festival with a gymnasium at Parry Sound High School as its main
performance venue. When Artistic Director James Campbell walked
onstage on that first memorable night, the audience rose to its
feet and erupted in cheers. When the ovation settled down, his first
words were, “Well, dreams do come true.” Tonight we celebrate our
tenth season in the wonderful hall built on those dreams with an
evening of music, laughter, wine, good friends, good conversation
and fine food. The evening begins with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres,
served in the atrium and enjoyed on the waterside deck if the
weather is fine, followed by dinner in the Festival Performance Hall.
Mary Lou Fallis, our host for the evening, is joined by duo-pianists
Anagnoson and Kinton in music that will enhance every course.
Come and raise a glass to the Stockey Centre’s first 10 seasons and
help us raise funds for many more years of wonderful music to
come. Your support and encouragement, shown by your presence
with us, are particularly welcome in these challenging economic
times. A tax receipt for $70 will be issued for each ticket sold.
Wine with dinner is included in the price of the ticket. Seating is
reserved at tables for eight, so order early to avoid disappointment.

Go the Distance
The Festival of the Sound is a different organization from the one Margaret Boyd joined as an administrative assistant in 1989. When she was asked to take on a management role for four months in the spring of 1992, the Festival was facing organizational and financial challenges and needed to have a successful summer. Well, those four months turned into twenty years. Margie has “gone the distance” with the Festival of the Sound and has played a key role in its growth and success as well as in planning and fundraising for the Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts. The August 12 concert will honour Margie, who is retiring from her career as Executive Director. Many of the musicians with whom she has worked will be donating their services to make this concert a real celebration. There is no admission charge for this special concert but we are inviting all who are part of the Festival of the Sound “family” to give Margie a congratulatory gift through our “Go the Distance” fundraising campaign. This will symbolically make it possible for all the musicians who want to participate to travel to Parry Sound and home again, a total of 37,000 kilometres, and will strengthen the Festival through the transition period. The campaign will continue through the summer with the names of all contributors to the Go the Distance campaign included in a memento that will be given to Margie with our thanks.
Choose one of our easy donation options: by mail (check the box on the ticket order form), by phone when ordering tickets, online at www.festivalofthesound.ca or in person at every concert.
GIFTOF A LIFETIME
Our hospital owes its very beginning to a legacy gift. In 1897, Dr. John R. Stone financed the opening and management of the Parry Sound General Hospital. From humble begin-nings serving 70 patients many suffering from typhoid, we’ve grown to a 70-bed acute care hospital operating a 24-hour Emergency that annually serves approximately 25,000 patients in Emergency alone. Dr. Stone’s lasting legacy has made our Parry Sound world safer.
A legacy donation as part of your will offers our generation the chance to give back and contribute to the next 100 years.
Legacy donations are endowed in our Forever Fund.

Charles and Lois Stockey Endowment FundCharles and Lois Stockey were supporters of and workers for the Festival of the Sound in its formative years before they moved to Victoria, BC. In 2002, what began with a casual question about what was happening now in Parry Sound led to a donation of $1.7 million to name the Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts. Now the Festival has a home, an intimate performance hall that has come to be ranked as one of the finest in the world for chamber music. During the 25th Anniversary Season in 2004, the Festival Board established the Charles and Lois Stockey Endowment Fund to honour our benefactors. To ensure the long-term health of the organization, all memorial donations and other gifts directed to this fund are invested, with the interest used to support annual operations.
Charles Stockey died in September of 2004 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Lois lives in Victoria and maintains a keen interest in news from Parry Sound.
Information about the Charles and Lois Stockey Endowment Fund is available at all Festival of the Sound concerts. Speak to one of the Directors wearing a “gold badge” or call the Festival Office. Contributions of any size are welcome and are eligible for a charitable tax receipt.
Youth Music Education FundThis fund was established in the spring of 2010 with a generous donation from long-time Festival member Frances M. Brown. She has established this fund to help ensure the future of Music Scores and other educational initiatives for youth. Additional donations to the Youth Music Education Fund are welcome at any time and are eligible for a charitable tax receipt.
