Homeowner HeadachesSigns of Opossums, the Damage They Can Cause

and the Diseases They Can TransmitDid you know that there were no opossums in California be-

fore the 1890’s? A small population of the marsupial was moved to Los Angeles County by migrants, where their descendants spread across the south coast.

Because opossums are one of the largest nuisance rodent spe-cies, they tend to cause more widespread damage than rats or mice. Opossums may rip shingles, siding, or insulation with their teeth and claws. Opossum feces can also leave large stains and may carry diseases. They can also be difficult to get rid of on your own because they are not easily scared or intimidated. If their hissing display does not work on a predator, the opossum may either play dead or become aggressive. They can cause lawn damage as they dig for grubs to eat. Small holes in soft turf are possible signs of the opossum.

Opossums are dangerous because of their ability to transmit diseases to pets and people. Known to carry leptospirosis, tuber-culosis, coccidiosis, spotted fever, tularemia, and other diseases, the pesky creatures pose serious health threats when they invade urban environments. Furthermore, opossums serve as host ani-mals to fleas, ticks, lice, and mites, which puts dogs and cats at risk of becoming infested with these parasites.

Raccoons, opossums and skunks are nocturnal mammals that have invaded Southern California. These large pests generally do not construct their own dens, but will use abandoned dens, hollow trees, crawl spaces, storm drains, under porches, attics, garages and chimneys. They are omnivorous, eating both plants and animals. Plant foods include all kinds of fruits, berries, nuts, acorns, corn and other types of grain. Animal foods include grubs, fish, frogs, snails, insects, rodents, pet food left outside overnight, and bird feeders. They are also good climbers.

Signs of Pest Inhabitant:- Noise on roof, chimney, or attic, particularly at night

- Droppings, feces, scat

- Barking dogs

- Pervasive, unpleasant smells or odors

- Damage to exterior buildings

- Damage or holes in lawn

- Disappearing pet food

- Messy feedings leaving scattered food or garbage

- Footprints or tracks on property

If you think you have uninvited large pests, it is advisable to hire a professional pest control company.

Thinking About Your New Year’s Resolutions Yet?

One common resolution is to lose weight! Below are 7 diet mistakes:

Eating Too Few Calories - So many people starve themselves when dieting. This actually stores fat, causing your body to go into hibernation mode, not knowing when it will get proper nutrition again.

Eating the Wrong Foods - All foods are not created equal. If someone feasts on greasy hamburgers and chili cheese fries, their body will pack on bad fats. They’ll lack the energy to workout or even make it through the day. But when you stuff your diet with healthy, organic, natural foods, you’ll notice your energy won’t dip during the day. Your body will function the ways it’s meant to, and you’ll lower your risk of contracting heart disease, high cholesterol, diabetes, and other severe health conditions.

Consuming Carbs and Proteins at the Wrong Hours - People often budget their carbs and proteins without considering the best time of day to eat them.

Cutting the Carbs - In general, you want to eat plenty of proteins while limiting the amount of carbs you intake daily. Carbs elevate the body’s insulin levels. Insulin naturally blocks the body from burning fat.

Not Eating Cheat Meals - Cheat meals also boost the body’s leptin levels. Leptin is a protein produced by fatty tissue and believed to reg-ulate fat storage in the body. The prevalence of leptin will make you lose more fat after you return to your diet from a cheat meal.

Not Following a Meal Plan - They say if you fail to plan, then you plan to fail. That’s especially true with food. It’s so easy to lose track of your diet without proper knowledge and planning.

Consuming Too Little Water and Too Much Alcohol - Most peo-ple don’t drink enough water. Water keeps us hydrated, and hydration aids the fat-loss process. Drinking alcohol in moderation won’t kill your diet. But drinking on a regular basis adds unnecessary carbs to your diet and counteracts your weight-loss progress.
