Complete these four sentences using the sentence openers. How many sentence openers like these can you think of? Write down your ideas for sentence openers. If you would like to challenge yourself, you can write an imaginative story and try to use interesting sentence openers. Spelling You can choose mild, medium or hot words from the worksheet Spelling Words. There are 4 handwriting sheets for you to practise the first join. Here are some top tips for handwriting practice: o Take it slow! Handwriting practice is not a race to the finish! o Sit at a table like you would do at school. If you lie down or relax on the sofa while practising then your hand is not in such a good position. o Little and often is a good idea. Do 1 sheet a day rather than all of them at once. o Practise and patience! You are learning a new skill and that will always take time and effort. Don’t be discouraged if you find the join tricky. We will continue to practise joined handwriting throughout your time at primary school. o You don’t need to use this join straightaway in all your other writing. If you would like to start to use the join then that’s great but at the beginning we are focussing on using it during handwriting practice.

    Literacy and English

    • Reading Reading Comprehension – Complete the Birds in Your Garden

reading comprehension. You can choose between mild, medium or

hot. Mild has one star at the bottom of the worksheet, medium has

two stars and hot has three.

    • Writing – Sentence Openers We are going to look at some different and interesting ways we can start sentences in our writing.

Look at the VCOP Activity Challenge Power Point.

o One way to open a sentence is to use a ‘where’ starter like this one: At the end of the park, stood an old tree......

o You can also open a sentence using a description like this one: A smooth, glittering diamond......

o You can open a sentence using a ‘ly’ starter like this one: Quickly, she threw on a scarf......

o Another way to open a sentence is to use Alliteration like this: The slow, slimy snail......

Complete these four sentences using the sentence openers. How many sentence openers like

these can you think of? Write down your ideas for sentence openers. If you would like to

challenge yourself, you can write an imaginative story and try to use interesting sentence

    openers.

    • Spelling You can choose mild, medium or hot words from the worksheet Spelling Words. Practise spelling

your chosen words using Rainbow and Pyramid writing or challenge yourself by trying to include

all your chosen words in a short story. o Mild u-e – cube, tube, rude, huge, flume, tune, cute, chute, use, cure o Medium ir – stir, bird, third, swirl, firm, first, dirt, birthday, thirteen, thirty o Hot ly – bravely, correctly, fairly, kindly, lovely, loudly, proudly, slowly, suddenly, wisely

o Would you like more practise? Use lined paper to write out the words you have practised

on this week’s sheets. There is lined paper in the box in the shelter where you can find the

    home learning packs.

    • Measure

This term we are going to learn about different ways of measuring. This week,

we’d like you to follow a recipe and bake or cook something using measuring

skills. See the Pancake Recipe if you would like to make pancake for Pancake

Day on Tuesday 16th February. Post a picture of what you have made or draw

a picture to share on Teams. As a fun extra challenge, complete the Pancake

Day Word Search or make one of your own.

    • Multiplication Think Mat

We are so delighted with the work you have been doing on times

tables. Watch the Multiplication Think Mat video to see strategies

you can use to work on understanding times tables. Use the

Multiplication Think Mat sheet to try them out. There are a lot of

strategies in this task. It’s a good idea to pause the video after

each strategy and try one at a time. If you are feeling ready for

another challenge, use the Times Tables Challenge to practise

your skills (mild, medium and hot). Use Hit the Button for a fun way to work on your tables.

    https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

    • Mr Rand’s Count-by Challenge

Mr Rand has made a new video for this week’s numeracy challenge. See Mr Rand’s Count-by

Challenge video for more information. We would love to hear how you get on in the numeracy

    challenge on Teams. Have fun!

    • Dice Empire

A fun game to work on times tables is called ‘Dice Empire’. We use Dice

Empire 196 in the classroom when we want to use 6 sided dice, but you

could use 0-6 homemade number cards if you don’t have dice. Dice

Empire 400 is for 10 sided dice, but you could use 0-10 home made

number cards at home. Instructions are on the sheet.

    • Health and Wellbeing

Wednesday 17th February is Random Acts of Kindness Day. Look at the

PowerPoint Random Acts of Kindness PPT. Listen to the story, Be Kind by Pat

Zietlow Miller https://youtu.be/t6NUJ2JZz50 and think about what kindness

means to you. Make a list or draw picture of things you could do as acts of

kindness. Use the Random Acts of Kindness sheet to draw or write ideas.

    • Social Studies

Over the next few weeks we are going to explore the Ancient Egyptians. Before

we start, complete the sheet called What We Know about Ancient Egyptians.

    Think about, write or draw:

o What you already know about the Ancient Egyptians

o What you would like to find out about the Ancient Egyptians

o What you know is definitely NOT TRUE about the Ancient Egyptians

    • Music To round off our weather work from before the February holiday, Miss Findlay has put together

another music activity for you. Watch the video and complete the worksheet Winter Weather

Rhythms. See the music assignments on Teams for more details. Please share your learning on

the Additional Curricular Area channel on Teams on Music Assignments

    • French Some of the children have been asking about the French alphabet. Watch the

video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_LYy3P2okyw and have a go saying

the alphabet. As an extra challenge you may want to try spelling your name

and the name of your family members. You could even upload a video of you

spelling your name to Teams. Use the sheet French Alphabet for help.

finish! Practise with a partner and time yourselves. Record your times

    below:

    1.

    2.

    3.

    4.

    5.

Now have a go spelling your name. You could even try to spell the names of

    your family members.
