I believe there is nothing greater than recognizing your peers and colleagues for work that is above and beyond the daily schedules. We all know that recognition relates to retention and each and every one of you are cherished colleagues of PA Services. So it goes without saying that we recognize you for your untiring efforts to provide quality care to our patients. Besides our annual awards of Outstanding PAs, Outstanding PA/Physician Team, Outstanding Team and Outstanding Department, this year we are adding two new categories: Outstanding Preceptor and Outstanding Educator. You may think these two awards are the same, yet in fact they are very different in description. The Outstanding Preceptor is a PA who has taken PA students over and above what other PAs take. And they receive high grades and evaluations continually from the students he/she precepts. This person really outshines all others in service to PA students. The Outstanding Educator award is designed for that person (could be any professional) who has gone the extra mile in trying to inform, teach and be a resource for PAs within our system. This person will have a true “connection” with our PA employees and is always available to them. This person is “the resource” above all resources for knowledge. Entertaining, resourceful and available define this recipient. We also will call for our Distinguished PA Award. This award is a Peer to Peer award, nominated by PAs to a PA. Within this newsletter is a full description of all of our awards. The deadline for nominations is Aug. 1, 2013. All nominations will go to the Awards committee for review and recipients will receive their awards at the PA Week Reception on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at the Foundation House. Each year we are humbled and amazed at the incredible nominations that we receive. I know this year will not be any different! I look forward to your nominations and welcome any questions you may have on the different award categories. And remember; “there is NOTHING greater in the world than when somebody on the team does something good, and EVERYBODY gathers around to pat him on the back!” (Billy Martin) So let’s recognize those outstanding individuals and teams and then gather on Oct. 9 to truly give them the appreciation they deserve! Thanks for reading, Carpe Diem Josanne

Recognition: • The act of recognizing or fact of being recognized

    • Acceptance or acknowledgment of a claim, duty, fact, truth

    • A token of thanks or acknowledgement

It’s that time of year again, when we call out for nomina‐tions for our Outstanding PAs, Teams and Departments!

I believe there is nothing greater than recognizing your peers and colleagues for work that is above and beyond the daily schedules.  We all know that recognition relates to retention and each and every one of you are cherished colleagues of PA Services.  So it goes without saying that we recognize you for your untiring efforts to provide qual‐ity care to our patients.

Besides our annual awards of Outstanding PAs, Out‐standing PA/Physician Team, Outstanding Team and Out‐standing Department, this year we are adding two new categories:  Outstanding Preceptor and Outstanding Edu‐cator.  You may think these two awards are the same, yet in fact they are very different in description.

9 at the Foun‐dation House.

    IN THE SPOTLIGHT

    Sondra Vetovitz, PA Student

    P A G E 2 P A S E R V I C E S N E W S

Congratulations to PA student Sondra Vetovitz on being chosen as the Summer 2013 highlighted PA student! Sondra is a native Ohioan who completed her under-graduate degree at Bowling Green State University. Her initial plan was to attend medical school but while shadowing during her under-graduate studies she “met an amazing PA who was excited to teach her about the profes-sion” and soon afterwards she knew this was her career choice. After touring the campus, receiving many posi-tive recommendations from health professionals, and loving the small town atmosphere, Sondra interviewed and was accepted at the University of Mt. Union. She laughingly admits to question-ing her school choice many nights after attend-ing classes 16 hours and then having an hour and a half drive, both ways, to get home.

Her interest in medicine was piqued by her mom, who loved watching medical shows, and she would discuss with Sondra the medical mysteries and the how’s and why’s of some of the events she would see and hear about on TV. Sondra also volunteered at Medina Hospital as an STNA during college.

When asked about an “awesome” rotation Sondra says it was her OB/GYN rotation. She wrote about very “hands on” experiences she was able to take part in. On her first day she as-sisted in delivering a baby and during the second

delivery of the day her precep-tor allowed her to “catch the baby” while standing over her shoulder to assist, if needed. “It was by far the most nerve wracking and amazing experi-ences of my rotations.” She says she is now less nervous being in an elevator with a pregnant woman.

After completing a number of rotations she knew she had a strong interest in surgical spe-cialties. She completed her electives in neurosurgery and general surgery. She will be

graduating in August from Mt. Union and recently accepted a position with the Cleveland Clinic in Wooster where she will be part of the ambulatory surgery center team. Sondra states “ she feels blessed to have the opportunity to provide care to the people in her community.” She is currently rotating at Medina Hospital

Sondra currently lives in Lodi with her boyfriend Kevin and their 2 cats. She has fun cruising in town in her 1968 yellow Pontiac Firebird and while visiting her grandparents on Kelly’s Island where she kayaks, beach combs, and looks for bugs! She is into Entomology ( bug collecting ) and has a collection of butterflies and dragonflies. Now that she is out of school she hopes to have more time on the weekends to get to target prac-tice with her dad.

Congratulations Sondra, you have come full circle from volunteering at Medina Hospital to complet-ing your final Cleveland Clinic rotation there.

“We cannot hold a torch to light another's path without brightening our own.” ― Ben Sweetland

It’s summertime and the living is easy!  Our days and eve‐nings are filled with outdoor grilling, vacations and gradua‐tions.  As you know, PA students go through school year round and do not take the summer off.  In fact, most of the programs have clinical rotations throughout the summer.

For the past number of years, we have scheduled over 200 student rotations for a school year.  And although we have redesigned our student initiative to serve the Ohio PA pro‐grams, we still have the intent of taking 200 students each year.

Yet, in order for us to sustain this goal, we need engaged preceptors.  A number of years ago, PA Services sent out a survey to all of you asking why you take students.  At the same time, PAEA (Physician Assistant Education Association) surveyed PAs from across the United States.

The results were exactly the same.  PA’s stated the following reasons for why they precept students:

    • They want to give back

    • The students keep them on their toes

    • They learn just as much as the students do

    • It enriches them both educationally and emotionally (feels good)

    • It’s an ongoing job interview for prospective candidates

Another question that was asked on the national survey was: “Why do you NOT take PA students?”

And the replies are as follows:

    • They take up too much time, can’t see as many patients

    • My supervisor does not want to teach

    • I don’t like teaching

I know that not everyone is cut out to be a teacher or preceptor.  And that’s ok.  Yet with our numbers increasing to almost 400 PA employees, we should be able to take more stu‐dents in the hopes of training them and retain‐ing them as employees.

Our own Emergency De‐partment has debunked

the myth of “students take up too much time”.  The ED routinely takes 2 PA students every month (sometimes 3 in critical needs times) and yet, in the fast track alone, they have decreased their patient’s wait time by two hrs, and increased the patient’s satisfaction scores to 4.9 out of 5.  They are seeing over 28% of all ED pa‐tients at a 3‐4 level acuity.

That absolutely debunks the myth that students take up too much time!

Recognizing that our priority is in placing the right stu‐dent in the right clinical site, we have refined our se‐lection process for matching students so that only the top candidates are matched to our available sites and preceptors.  This process has resulted in an increase of hiring our students from 8% in 2012 to 33% in the first half of 2013!  And we continue to see engaged stu‐dents who most likely will come onboard as employ‐ees in the fall and winter.

I would like you to give serious consideration to be‐coming a preceptor or continuing to be a preceptor.  As Ben Sweetland says; as you light another’s path you also brighten your own.  You truly receive far more than you give when you precept a PA student.

So, touch the future, change a PA student’s life and precept!

All those interested in becoming a preceptor, please contact me at [email protected], or feel free to call me at 216‐444‐2256 to discuss your interest or have any questions answered.

Thank you for reading and have a great summer!
