The Caldelas mountain range is located between the Pico Sacro and the Pozo de San Xoán da Cova, the narrow Ulla river pace through the range in Gundián.

The landscape is characterized by pine and eucalyp-tus repopulations, with random mixed forests of decidious trees, mainly oaks (Quercus robur L.) and Pyrenean oaks (Quercus pyrenaica Will.), and other perennial autochthonous and foreing species. Seve-ral habitats of community interest were described in the surroundings of the sierra de Caldelas.

Part of the plan’s area is occupied by S errabal Mine, mining authorization from 1978. Serrabal Mine is, for volume and quality mineral quartz reserves, unique and worldwide recognized.

The Vedra town planning established the necessity of the Protection, restoration and special planning of the Caldelas mountain range (PE-2), according to the landscape characteristics, as well as the extractive activities that are developed in this location.

The aim of the Strategic Environment Assessment, which is the basis of the Environmental Sustainabili-ty Report (ESR), is to achieve a high level of environ-mental protection and to contribute to the integra-tion of environmental aspects into the preparation and adoption of plans and programs with a view to promoting sustainable development.

The ESR includes an exhaustive description of the envi-ronment and the appropriate measures to avoid negative situations that the planning could cause and the adequa-te monitoring and evaluation plan to identify unexpected effects and implement appropriate counter-measures.

RAMSA (FerroAtlántica Group) needed an expansion for their office building in the Serrabal Mine, already expanded on 2001 by the architects Baltar, Bartolo-mé & Almuíña.

It was planned to add a first floor respecting the fa-cade guidelines, blended well together with the su-rrounding industrial and mine buildings and the rural environment where it is located.

Planning. Even if there is a certain similarity with the base floor plan arrangement, it was required a wide-open office style, with a better use of the na-tural light, a modern and functional character of the space, responding to the requirements of an up-to-date office.

Construction. We use the existent attic concrete floor framing structure, setting out a grille of metallic pi-llars holding up the roof covering, in Composite slab, looking for mitigate the noise transmission of the he-avy machinery used on the mine. The technical floor and the suspended ceiling will help with the reques-ted space flexibility, and the glass partitions will intro-duce the natural light into the internal of the building.

The project begins with the knowledge of the place, the small village in the Ribeira Sacra, on the river-bank of the Miño, from where the family emigrated in the 20th century, mainly to Buenos Aires (Argenti-na) and to where the owner and the architect came to spend summers and vacations, with games, hikes and work in the family farm.

The aim is restoring a little, in ruins house, unoccu-pied since the fifties, to just use it on weekends and holidays. It is a project premise to preserve the tradi-tional and rural character of the building.

It was impossible to annex the closest lot, so it was discarded any volume expansion of the original buil-ding. Therefore, it was needed an adaptation of the original plan to ft in the available space, trying to maintain the atmosphere of the building and its im-pact on the surroundings.

It was chosen chestnut wooden both on roof trus-ses and floor framing, filling the tie-beams span with gravel, improving the acoustic isolation.

InspirationEach sand grain (gran de area) counts, shaping dunes, making up the landscape, on the same way each architectonic intervention will join and be a part of its environment.

IntegrationThe exhibition adapts to the shape of plaza on an ergonomic way, as a secondary skin, reincorporating both visitors and pedestrians to become part of it.

AdaptationThe layout of the exhibition of the different winning projects will be big triangular shaped pieces, as the plaza pavement. The visitor will walk upon, step on the exhibition itself.

Range of colorsA sand range of colors is used for the background of the panels layout, offering an attractive mosaic.

ExecutionThe execution will consist on a double layer street-rap vinyl: the first one with the printing and the second rough, to give both protection and grip to avoid pedestrian falls. A material that allows a perfect adaptation to the topography of the plaza, respecting its different heights and inclinations, and specially developed for very busy, both, interiors and exteriors. It is waterproof and allows the restoration of the pavement to its original conditions without any damage on its surface.

The project’s origin is the concept of servant and served spaces: classrooms, offices and laboratories opposite circulation spaces, public attention services and courtyards.

Modulation and prefabricationThe plan started with a grid (x,y), as the organization basis of the servant and served spaces. The cons-truction system will be dry-joined and prefabricated, giving flexibility, mobility and an easy space manipu-lation (mobile partitions)

Increasing possibilitiesThe building can be expanded in the future more than a 25%, due to the grid plant, the numerous courtyards and the prefabricated constructive system.

Adaptation to the plotThe cross section is essential in this project; the buil-ding is organized in 3 levels. The roof becomes a big green roof, serving both the building and the plot as a real green, social relation and leisure space.

Energy and maintenance cost savingsThe green roof in a semi-buried building gives a great thermal isolation, at a low maintenance finish, using recycled water irrigation. The natural cross ventila-tion through the courtyards reduce the air-conditio-ning power consume.Competition, co-authored with Carlos Bóveda and Alberto Miranda

The location is on an almost plain, stretched shaped lot, located between the river bank and the village, allowing a promenade between the urban space and the natural environment, in a perfect relationship with the surroundings.

We propose to use gabion walls, filled with local sto-ne, extracted from a near quarry, as a reinterpretation of the rural traditional Galician dividing parcels walls.

The building is divided on two blocs: The first one, the Interpretation Center, with the exhibition room between the first and the second level; the second bloc is the training area, organized also in two levels, with the accommodations on the upper one.

The horizontal and vertical circulations have been re-duced to its minimum. The road traffic is kept at the entry of the plot, leaving a secondary path for the buil-ding and installations maintenance and emergencies.Competition, co-authored with Carlos Bóveda and Alberto Miranda

The Ribeiro was always very linked to the wine cul-ture: the cultivation and processing of the grape and the wine exportation influenced on a substantial way to the development of the region, promoting the ap-pearance of specific architectonic types.

The aim of this senior thesis project is to capture this tradition and to plan a center that could serve both the villa and the region. A completely integrated on its surrounding building that keeps its singularity and modern style without breaking the whole that belongs to. Theses were the premises assumed on its design:

- Historical analysis, surveying, previous structural and constructive diagnosis. Historical monument identification and classification

- Safeguard of the most important monument of the area: Saint John’s Church

- Effective design, based on the study use-function- Delicacy and integration in the surroundings,

trying to not visually compete with the church and the other buildings

- Contemporaneity of the intervention

There were other intangible aspects studied on this project: the character of the building and the sensa-tions we wanted to provoke on the visitors, so it must fulfill the following points:

- Timeless character- Calm, tranquil, without shrillness- Warm, friendly

The project starts with the aim of create a public space in the ensanche (Coruña’s city center), a real plaza, opposite to the old preexisting building, which took up the whole plot. The transition between spa-ces must be dim, so the visitor could not distinguish the point where it goes from public to private, com-mercial and ludic, getting a continuous in space.

These premises, along with the density of the pro-gram, leaded to planning the building from the cross section, in different levels, trying to not loose the continuity in the promenade. It was generated a surface, then manipulated and colonized with the different functions.

- On the street level, a public plaza, covered with an open and winding pergola: a space for events, street vending, etc. and a soft access to the com-mercial and market areas.- On a medium, street level, there will be the vege-table, fruit and specialized stalls.- Going down one level, the fish and meat mar-ket, organized in a spine shape form, illuminated through great (8,5x5 m), semi-transparent, polycar-bonate skylights.- At the street level, we propose to zone the streets: one longitudinal will bepreserved for pedestrians, whether the other will mainly used by vehicles and loading and unloading zone.

For the construction execution, it was planned to di-vide the building in slices, which could be executed in the regional shipyard shops. This would allow to give flexibility to the building, as well as accelerate and give a better control on the constructive process.

The starting point, as every Zumthor’s Atelier project, is the abstract idea of the atmospheric architecture, the ambient conditions that influence in the visitor of the building and the emotions it provokes. A strong, recognizable image was also a need.

It was developed from the study of a surface that can be adapted to a big green space, respecting with its height variations and the natural steep, without chop-ping down the preexisting trees. Therefore, several effects, small changes in the structure are planned, so the pavement becomes a bench, a scenario, stands or the café itself.

Flux capacitorThe proposal consists on the replacement of the obelisk by a machine, able to generate big scale holograms. The obelisk is an out-of-time element, in comparison with the renovated buildings in the area, much taller than the originals.

With these holograms, the near shop’s fashion co-llections could be advertised, as a marketing tactic.

The idea that motivated this project was the denun-ciation of the renovation of the urban city centers, completely wasted by the real-state uncontrolled speculation, many times with the complicity of the public authorities. In addition, and in accordance with the annual subject, I wanted to take advantage of the use of an exhibition display in terms of scale.

On the other hand, the project wanted to mix two traditional architectural concepts: space and material, using the hologram perception, its special characte-ristics, as the nonexistence as tangible reality (they do not exist beyond our mind, where the senses’ stimu-lus are synthesized)
