Executive Director’s Message

Under the leadership of Program Coordinator Mark Gunderson and Corps Manager David Pham, Pacific Crest enjoyed its most successful season ever. In Summer 2012, the corps performed in 23 shows and toured through ten states. They ended the season in 16th place at the Drum Corps International World Championships, held at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana. A year prior to his election to the Pacific Crest Board of Directors, Howard Hsu (1994, 1996 – 1999) was already at work establishing the Pacific Crest Alumni Association. Since then, dozens of alumni have reconnected with the corps, participating in social events and programming to support our members. The Alumni Association funds the Peggy Haggin Scholarship, named for the long-time supporter and volunteer who passed away in 2010. Many alumni participate in Adopt-An-Ageout, mentoring age-outs and sending them care packages on tour. You’ll also see them staffing the VIP Booth at Corps at the Crest Walnut, where they thank music educators and donors for their support. The most exciting project to date has been RunPC a 5K/1K race event that raised $1,500 in its first year! Thanks to the Alumni Association, our alumni are reconnecting with each other and Pacific Crest and are providing needed support to our members at the same time.

Amy Clayton was inducted into the George Perry Volunteer Hall of Fame at the 2012 Awards Luncheon.Born in Newport Beach, Amy grew up in a military family and lived in countries around the world, including three years in Egypt when her father was with the U.S. Embassy.Amy earned a BS in Geography at UC Riverside and continued on to earn her Teaching Credential and MA in Curriculum and Instruction. She has been

teaching elementary school for 25 years in Riverside.Amy is married to Dennis, another active Pacific Crest volunteer; and their youngest son, William, performed in our color guard in 2010 and 2011.As Uniform Manager, Amy manages the uniform inventory and coordinates the fitting and altering of the uniforms each year. She’s always ready to jump in and help with other projects, including sewing, cooking, and selling merchandise.“I love being around the performers who are working so hard to follow their dreams, to pursue their passion. It’s exciting to watch the show develop and I’m really thankful to be able to contribute a bit to it. And, I figure, that if I work half as hard as I see the marching members working, then I am doing pretty well.”

We are grateful to the donors listed below who were members of our Sustaining Leaders Circle in 2012. By restructuring their support to a monthly gift – automatically deducted from their checking account – they have lessened the burden of making an annual gift in one lump sum.How does this help Pacific Crest? Monthly gifts provide us income year-round, which is especially helpful during our off-season. Moreover, modest monthly giving allows donors to give much more over a year than they might be able to do otherwise. For example, a number of our donors who gave $25 per year are now giving $10 per month. That’s a total annual gift of $120 with little impact to their monthly budget! Plus at that level, they now qualify for premiums like free tickets to Corps at the Crest.2012 Sustaining Leaders CircleAnthony FritzKathryn GundersonStephan and Teresa HamiltonRussell HelmstedterPhil and Rachel HofmanPaul and Cynthia IdellJoan IrvineJane JonkhoffKyle KvetonMatthew LackeyAdora and Josh LeeDebbie MilliganGreg and Maria MortonStuart Pompel and Ann LuechaRufino Ramirez and Ana MichelDennis and Judith ShannonGerry VanBooven

Sustaining Leaders Use Monthly Giving to Lighten the Load

In January 2012, Pacific Crest announced a partnership with KHS America, in Nashville, Tennessee. Beginning with the 2012 DCI season, our drum corps has been performing exclusively on Jupiter Quantum Marching

Brass, Majestic Field Percussion, and Mapex Quantum Marching Drums.“KHS America is pleased to have its marching line associated with such a top-flight organization in Pacific Crest,” said Tabor Stamper, President of KHS America. “We look forward to working with them throughout the DCI season, and beyond.”To replace all of our musical instruments, we embarked on a capital campaign in November 2011, beginning with a lead gift of $25,000 from a single donor. The organization’s tradition of financial sustainability was matched by its tradition of donor support, resulting in $120,000 raised to fund the new instrument purchase. There is still a funding gap of $10,000 to complete the purchase. We hope to close this gap by June 1, 2013. For more information about how you can help, please email Stuart Pompel at [email protected] with one of the largest instrument manufacturers in the world has helped Pacific Crest gain visibility in the music industry, and we look forward to future opportunities this will provide.

2012 Summary of Financial Data

Fiscal Year 2012 ended with a $49,488 decrease to Pacific Crest’s net assets (the net worth of the organization). Of the decrease, $13,564 was due to unanticipated major repairs to our vehicles, a spike in airline fares, and fundraising shortfalls. To address this challenge, the Board adopted a 2013 budget with more achievable revenue targets and more realistic expenditures. It is anticipated that this will enable the organization to deliver on its mission while ensuring sustainability. The remaining $35,924 was a one-time write-down of the value of our old instrument inventory – the difference between the value of our old musical instruments and what we earned from the sell-off of the entire inventory.

Board of Directors Address Challenging Financial Results

Pacific Crest’s School Outreach Program provides a significant discount for school groups of 50 or more to attend Corps at the Crest; however, for disadvantaged students, their schools may have limited volunteer support, and organizing a group of 50 students can be insurmountable for them.

To address this problem US Bank provided generous funding that provided free tickets to 170 students in 2012, and an expected 250 students in 2013. In addition, we recently received a commitment from PacTrust Bank to further expand the program by another 200 students! In all, more than 600 underserved high school students will be able to experience a live drum corps performance thanks to the generous funding from US Bank and PacTrust Bank.
