EXECUTIVE SUMMARY During the implementation phase of the Rain Water Harvest (RWH) GIS, it was crucial that government reserves should be updated and included in the database. This mission allowed for some ground truthing and to update the database with the correct dataset of RWH government reserves. This was great practical exercise for hands-on training of existing staff on how to progress the capture of the datasets, its practical use and the ongoing maintenance of the RWH database and GIS. Furthermore, it also provided the opportunity to explore the availability of health related data in digital form, with the capacity to be included as a separate layer representing water quality and health related information on the GIS. INTRODUCTION The mission was a follow up of the HYCOS implementation mission commenced 27th June to 11th July 2008. Primary focus of this exercise was to provide practical training on the application and the use of RWH database/ GIS from the 25th to 30th September, and to obtain a copy of the health related datasets from Ministry of Health. OBJECTIVE

• To update government reserves and recent tank distribution within RWH database and GIS.

• To provide practical application training on maintaining the RWH database and GIS. • To discuss with Ampelosa, SOPAC FP his presentation on GIS Application for RWH in

Tuvalu during the STAR Session in October 2008. • To meet with Ministry of Health officials and discuss health related data and the capacity

of the RWH database/ GIS to store and display that information with a geographical overview.

CONCLUSION The practical application exercise on how to maintain the RWH Database/ GIS was well received with success. The team at PWD are now running with it at ease and with great mobility. The datasets are shaping up with new tanks installed and government reserves included. The most crucial part is the ongoing updates with ground truthing of suspicious existing records. As far as the health related data is concerned, it will take some time before that dataset can be linked to the GIS. Until data collected is inputted at the household level, health data cannot be linked to the RWH based on Roof_ID i.e. the household level. However, current datasets can be linked at the district level, but this is not the design of the RWH database and GIS. RECOMMENDATIONS It was clear from discussions with Dr. Nese Ituaso Conway, that the Ministry of Health have still quite a lot of data in paper forms that requires digitisation. It is recommended that they start digitising these data archives on to an excel spreadsheet, starting at the household level.
