Did you know?

Hill Top was the home of Beatrix Potter, and she wrote lots of her Peter Rabbit™ books there. Located in the Lake District, it’s now cared for by the National Trust.

Build a hedgehog hotel

Activity 2

Winter is a great time to give wildlife a helping hand. Why not build a hedgehog hotel so hedgehogs like Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle have somewhere safe and cosy to spend the winter months?

Welcome

1. Turn your cardboard box upside down and ask an adult to help you cut a hedgehog-sized doorway into it. If you want to make it extra cosy, use a second smaller cardboard box to create an entrance tunnel into the larger box.

2. Use dried leaves, hay or straw to fill the box and keep the hedgehogs nice and snug.3. Put your box in a quiet part of the garden and cover it with your waterproof covering.4. Cover the box and waterproof covering with moss, leaves and twigs or logs to help it

look natural and protect it from the weather.

Remember, in the wild, animals choose where they live. So, if your hedgehog house is empty at first, look back in a week or so, and you might find a guest has moved in!

Instructions

Every hedgehog has between 5000 and 7000 spines. Each spine lasts about a year before being replaced with a new one – just like human hair.
