Padma Bhushan Award for Pujya Guruji

Delighted to share the news that today the Government of India has offi-cially communicated that Pujya Guruji Swami Tejomayananda has been conferred the Padma Bhushan award.

The Padma Bhushan award is one of the most prestigious civilian National awards in India, recognizing the recipients’ distinguished service of high order to the nation.

It is befitting that in the birth centenary year (2015-2016) of Pujya Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda, His devoted disciple is being recognised through the conferring of this award. It is indeed recognition of the work of the entire organisation.

It is an occasion of great joy for the Chinmaya family as well as an oppor-tunity to rededicate and resolve to take forward Pujya Gurudev’s work and message to more and more people.

A new year has begun. Does it bring any novelty for us?

There should be something new in our lives besides the date on the calendar.

Does it bring any external or internal change?

External novelty refers to changes outside such as painting the house, buying a new car and so on.

Internal novelty refers to a change in our view- point. If our vision of life does not improve, we keep

living the way we always did. Nowadays, everyone receives many text messages or email wishes

for a happy new year. How do we make our new year happy? Here are a few formulae.

Good health

For a happy life, it is necessary to have good health. If our body is not healthy, we can neither sit for dis-

courses nor watch a movie or hear music. We cannot enjoy anything. Therefore, we must ensure that we

keep our body healthy.

Wealth

The second requirement is that of wealth. For our worldly life, money is required. To have money does

not mean one should be a millionaire. But there must be enough wealth in our homes. Even for serving

others, we must have sufficient money.

Discrimination

The third requirement is a discriminative intellect. Discrimination helps us to understand what is right and

what is wrong. It also inspires us to hold on to the right.

Goodness of heart

The fourth is goodness of heart - goodness, purity of emotion and feeling, truthfulness of the heart. All

parents want their children to be educated, intelligent and smart. But the main desire is to have a ‘good’

child. Thus if all the four are present, then there is happiness all around. But how does one gain them?

A Total Vision

In the Bhagawad Geeta, Sri Krishna symbolizes a holistic vision of life. Arjuna represents ‘a person ready

to put efforts in accordance with that vision or knowledge.’ Thus, where there is both right vision and

right action, there is success. As a result of the knowledge imparted by the Lord, Arjuna who was in deep

sorrow, came out of it, took up arms and became victorious. Clearly, we should gain the knowledge con-

tained in the Geeta and the Upanishads.

This knowledge enables us to see the oneness in all beings. It creates true love in our mind and because of

that love we take an interest in performing our duties. Love and knowledge leads to bliss and peace. Sor-

row and delusion are removed by Self-knowledge. May we attain all these things in this birth. May we all

attain infinite bliss. May every year be a Very Happy New Year!

Anshuman featured in Columbus Dispatch “Dublin teen gives help to the homeless”

Anshuman Mishra, a student at Dublin Jerome High School, spent

months raising $2,600 to purchase 100 sleeping bags for the home-

less. He donated the sleeping bags to Star House, which serves the

homeless between ages 14 and 24.

Anshuman Mishra went above and beyond what many teenagers

might do after he saw a homeless man living under an overpass.

“Most 16-year-olds would have said, ‘I’m sad for this homeless per-

son, but I’m just a little kid, what would I do?’ And they’d go back

and sleep in their warm beds,” said Snigdha Mishra, his mother.

“So I’m really proud of him. That this 16-year-old said, ‘No. It may

not be a whole lot, but I will do what I can.’ ”

Instead, Anshuman, now 17, donated 100 sleeping bags after raising

money for them over several months.

He recalled that early March day that prompted the donations. He and

his mom drove past a man living under an overpass in Dublin.

Anshuman, now a junior at Dublin Jerome High School, was sur-

prised to see homelessness in his well-to-do suburb.

“It occurred to me that that was not right because it’s Dublin, and

there By the first week of November, he had $2,600 from onsite and

in-person donations. Anshuman said he did a lot of research to find

the best use for the money for homeless people, and sleeping bags

seemed a good idea.

“If you have a sleeping bag, it’s going to be usable by

pretty much anybody, as opposed to clothes or jackets or

anything like that,” he said.

From there, Anshuman and his parents contacted Meijer

to buy the sleeping bags at a discount.

His dad, Srikanta Mishra, showed him an article about

Star House, a drop-in center that is affiliated with Ohio

State University and serves the homeless between the ag-

es of 14 and 24.

“What really struck me there was that you don’t really

consider that homeless youth is really a thing,” Anshuman

said. “And that’s a problem that’s really underlooked.”

On Dec. 14, he took all of the sleeping bags to Star

House. Heather Messer, community liaison of Star House,

said she usually gets donations through school organiza-

tions that are initiated by the teachers or administrators.

But Messer said that Anshuman’s donation surprised her.

“For him, just being 17 and not only wanting to donate to

Star House but to fundraise is hard enough,” Messer said.

“And then to personally go out and buy the sleeping bags

and then just to come into our facility like he did was def-

initely one of a kind.”

After graduation, Anshuman said he hopes to major in en-

gineering and minor in public policy in college. And he

plans to make helping communities a major component of

his life.

Book of the Month

Yours Forever - Pujya Gurudev's early life is featured in this book through his own writings, his letters to his moth-er and sister, and through the recollections of his friends and family on all aspects of life.

The detailed family tree of Pujya Gurudev's premonastic life is another very interesting presentation here. There runs an irrepressible vein of wit and humor that makes it difficult to put the book down.

How many of us know that pujya Gurudev was good at sketching? His vast knowledge of arts and architecture, gardening and landscaping, his amazing grasp of the com-mon problems faced by us in daily life- this book brings out all this and much more. of Self -enquiry.

Certain days, either due to our impact with some exciting circumstances or other, or due to the rise of

some past embedded vasanas in ourselves, our minds are wild and uncontrollable. Under such circum-

stances the thundering mind refuses to keep silent; the flooded flow of thoughts becomes too furious to

be dammed; when brake is suddenly applied at that treacherous speed, the mind swerves and skids and

goes out of control.

On such days wait; wait patiently doing japa or kirtan for a longer time; let the thunder storm pass off;

let the floods come down; let the speed slow down to a safer point.....now we can have silence within,

as we can arrest effectively the flow of thoughts, we can apply our inner brake on the mind-sputnik.

Guru Dev's Quotes

Action

Plan out your work. Then work out your plan. The for-

mer without the latter is a sheer waste. The latter with-

out the former is mere unproductive confusion.

Unless we have a definite faith in the goal of our exist-

ence, and unless we believe, work for, and actually

come to experience the goal positively as an existent

factor, there is no hope of any plan becoming successful.

Sin is never in action, it is always in reaction.

The spirit of Advaita is not to keep away from anything,

but to keep in tune with everything.

Grace is only to be found by effort, although it is here

and now.
