PAF CHAPTER

Class: 4 Subject: Science Topic: Circuits and switches

Topic: Circuit and switches pg #66-67

Objective: To name and identify the components and symbols of an electric circuit.

Explanation: Before knowing what a circuit is, we should understand what electricity is?

Things need energy to move and work

Electricity is a form of energy.

Many machines get their energy from electricity.

Electricity powers

the alarm clock that

wakes you up

Electricity powers the computer you play games on.

Living things get their

energy from food

Cars and other vehicles

get energy from fuel

PAF CHAPTER

Class: 4 Subject: Science Topic: Circuits and switches Electricity powers the fridge that cools your drinks.

Electricity powers the hair dryer that dries your hair

What else can electricity do?

Think ….

Electricity can light up a light bulb means the electrical energy converts into heat and light energy.

Electricity can run a motor means if your mother uses a blender for making your favourite milkshake,

the electrical energy converts into mechanical (movement) energy.

Electricity can ring your door bell means the electrical energy converts into sound energy.

What is an electric circuit?

The pathway along which electricity

flows is called a circuit.

PAF CHAPTER

Class: 4 Subject: Science Topic: Circuits and switches Components of a circuit:

Wire Bulb

Motor

Buzzer

Instructions: Read and try to understand the definitions of the following words from the glossary of

Exploring Science book 4

Bulb (electricity)

Component

Circuit

Buzzer

Battery

Electrical conductor

Electricity

Switch

Wires

Motor: It converts electrical energy to mechanical energy. (Not given in glossary)

Motors are used for the rotatory movement in a machine. Juicer blender, washing machine, fan all

have motor.

Question: Can you think some more examples in which motor is used?

Symbols of components of an electric circuit:

PAF CHAPTER

Class: 4 Subject: Science Topic: Circuits and switches Whenever we are asked to make circuit diagram, we will not use the real picture of the component.

Instead we use a symbol that represents it. The bigger line of the symbol of a battery represents positive

terminal and small line shows the negative terminal.

Circuit diagram always has

straight lines.

Correct symbols to be used

for each component.

This circuit diagram has bulb

wire switch and a battery.

Task 1:

Draw a circuit diagram using a battery, wire, switch and a buzzer.

Task2:

Draw a circuit diagram using a battery, wire, switch and a motor.

Task 3:

Watch the given video under any of your parents’ supervision.
