1Duke Street Chapel was a small private chapel in the parish of St. Margaret, founded in 1709 in awing of the house once owned by Lord High Chancellor Jefferies. It overlooked St. James Park, at Story’sgate, standing near what is now the corner of Birdcage Walk and Horse Guards Avenue. It was torn downabout 1900. See William Stow, Remarks on London (London: T. Norris & H. Tracy, 1722), 98–99.

2See Sermons, 362.3CW mistakenly records the year as 1736 in this and the following entry. Under the old calendar

the year had changed in late March.4There are several villages near Oxford (where CW was staying) with the name Aston (or close

verbal cognates). It is unclear which he was indicating.5See Sermons, 308.6There is no “Wickham” in the area near Oxford. CW may have been referring to Wytham, about

3 mi NW of Oxford. JW preached in Wytham the following year.7See Sermons, 308.8See Sermons, 308.9See Sermons, 125.10See Sermons, 125.11The manuscript text of this sermon, which CW copied from JW, has survived (MARC, DDCW

2CW says he preached on the “second lesson.”3CW does not identify his text in the MS Journal for this day, but he had been preaching on the

assigned lessons and John 1 was assigned for this day. See the reference to those who had earlier heardhis sermon on the text “The voice of one crying in the wilderness, prepare ye the way of the Lord” (John1:23) in the MS Journal listing for July 21.

was explaining the seventh chapter of the Epistle to the Romans, which was to me like a man speaking inan unknown tongue. You was endeavouring to convince us of sin, and showing the difference betwixt thelaw and gospel. You told us what we were by nature, described the motions of sin stirring in us, and theblessings we received by Jesus Christ.”

24He preached on the “second lesson.”25Weavers’ Hall, an old hall (since demolished) of the Weavers’ Guild in Temple Street, was a

regular preaching point for Charles and John Wesley.26A park near the center of the city.27Rose Green was “a plain on top of a high hill”, about 2 mi NE of Kingswood; cf. JW letter to

James Hutton, April 1, 1739 (JW, Works, 25:628).28For a discussion of the site of the Brick-yard, see H. J. Foster, “Some Bristol Methodist Notes,”

WHS 2 (1900): 3–8.29This was a room recently completed in the Horsefair, near St. James’s churchyard, which was

large enough to contain the societies that met at Nicholas and Baldwin streets. When it was remodeled in1748, it became common to call it the “New Room.” That label will be used consistently in this register.

32Joseph Williams of Kiddermaster used a business trip to Bristol as the occasion to hear CWpreach. He wrote up an extended description of Wesley’s style and content in this sermon, which heintended to publish in the Gentleman’s Magazine as a sympathetic portrayal of Methodism. He sent acopy to CW for approval. The account never appeared in the Gentleman’s Magazine, perhaps becauseCW was not comfortable with its laudatory tone. The manuscript survives (MARC, DDPr 1/92) and canbe consulted in Wesleyan Methodist Magazine 51 (1828): 383–85.

33Also known as ‘Bury Field’ in Wesley’s day; Bearfield is now the northern district of Bradford-on-Avon.

34He was beginning a series.35CW says this was his first time preaching at night in the open air.361742 Letter of Naomi Thomas to CW (MARC, MA 1977/501), “One time in the bowling Green

you preached on those words, “I in them and they in me,” which came with such power to my soul thatthen I had redemption in the blood of Christ, the forgiveness of my sins, and filled with such joy that Icannot express.”

Man’ from the censures of … Mr. [Charles] Wesley (Bristol: for the author, 1740), 13–14.[summarizes points in exposition of Acts 6:8:]

First, that justification and pardon of sins are of the same import.Secondly, that pardon of sins are by faith and not by repentance.Thirdly, that God cannot forgive sins, but that Christ satisfied for the sins of all the whole world.Fourthly, that after men are thus justified, they may notwithstanding finally fall away and be

damned, taken from Nicholas, one of the seven deacons, verse 5.Fifthly, that God will not pardon sins because men repent, but because they believe.Sixthly, that faith is the new nature, the power of God in them.Seventhly, that Good works are not the cause of man’s salvation, but the imputed righteousness

of Christ is the only cause of it.Eighthly, that the lowest degree of the mark of a Christian is that they know their sins are

forgiven.27“One, pestered with the predestinarians, desired me to expound Rom. 9.”28CW became sick and was unable to preach after this for about six weeks.29Anne Hodges’ funeral sermon.30Journal letter covering Sept. 22–27, 1740 (MARC, MA 1977/503 Box 5, file 4).31“Was greatly assisted in the evening to preach the Christian perfection—that is, utter dominion

1Anne (Wesley) Lambert to JW, Jan. 10, 1741 (MARC, DDWF 10/1)2In JW’s Journal, he records that he was called by to London, where CW had been preaching, and

on Jan. 22 “began expounding where my brother had left off [on Tuesday], viz. at the fourth chapter ofthe first Epistle of St. John. He had not preached the morning before, nor intended to do it any more”(JW, Works, 19:178–79). This helps explain why the period of Jan. 1–Mar. 31, 1741 is skipped in CW,MS Journal. CW was being briefly drawn toward the doctrine of stillness taught by the EnglishMoravians; see also JW’s letter to CW, April 21, 1741 (JW, Works, 26:55–57)).

3JW, Journal, Works, 19:181; “My brother returned from Oxford and preached on ‘The true wayof waiting for God,’ thereby dispelling at once the fears of some and the vain hopes of others, who hadconfidently affirmed that Mr. Charles Wesley was still already and would come to London no more.”

4Letter to JW, March 16, 1741 (MARC, DDCW 1/12).5Letter to Lady Huntingdon, c. Mar. 1741 (MARC, MA 1977/504/2/96).6Journal letter covering April 14–25, 1741 (MARC, MA 1977/503 Box 5, file 5).7This was for Hannah Richardson’s funeral.

17CW, A Sermon Preached on Sunday, April 4, 1742, before the University of Oxford (London:Strahan, 1742). Reproduced in Sermons, 211–24; and JW, Works, 1:142–58.

18MS Journal skips the last three months of 1741 and all of 1742. There is only one journal letter(September 23–October 2, 1742) and few other letters to help fill in this void. Several factors likelycontributing to this lacuna. Significant time in early 1742 would have been devoted to preparing thesermon he preached on April 4 at Oxford. Then, in June 1742, CW suffered the death of his close friendRobert Jones, and worked through his grief by composing an extended elegy. On July 30, 1742 he lost hismother Susanna as well. Finally, it appears that while CW continued to minister in several settingsthrough this year, he was struggling with a debilitating health condition, as he resorted to a transcriber forhis writing (as noted in the Sept. 23, 1742 journal letter).

19Susannah Designe, manuscript journal covering 1741–42 (MARC, DDCW 9/2), p. 38; shecomments that on this Good Friday CW “made three such excellent discourses—I saw others woundedand sympathizing [with] the suffering of my savior.”

20Francis Pugh to Howell Harris, July 3, 1742 (National Library of Wales, Trevecka Letters,#571), published in Gomer M. Roberts (ed.), Selected Trevecka Letters, 1742–47 (Caernarvon: C.M.H.S.,1956), 28: “he gave an exhortation and called the predestinarians false deluders, telling his … hearers …if they would go to hear any others he should have no hopes of every seeing them in glory; crying, ‘Wehave many that said in their last words that they would venture their salvation upon this, that Christ diedfor all.’ ‘Come ye predestinarians,’ says he, ‘where are your witnesses? There was never a predestinatianthat could venture to say so.’”

21Journal letter covering Sept. 23–Oct. 2, 1742 (MARC, DDCW 6/1).22CW writes “Tangate,” but surely means Sandgate—an area of Newcastle outside the walls,

chiefly inhabited by keelmen and other common laborers. JW had preached there on May 30.23CW says “My audience at Tames was twice as large as before.” There is no Tames near

Newcastle, and the best guess is that he is referring to Sandgate, where he preached the day before.

1CW apparently kept a brief diary outline in shorthand, which he used when preparing the longeraccount in the MS Journal and journal letters. One of the few examples of such shorthand diary notes thathas survived is in a manuscript collection of hymns, MS Clarke (MARC, MA 1977/561), p. 219. It coversMay 16 – June 27, 1743. It will be referenced in notes when it adds clarifying information.

2Journal letter covering May 17–25, 1743 (MARC, DDCW 6/3).3The vicar was Rev. Samuel Taylor (1711–72).4CW was preaching in a church; this was the evening lesson.5The shorthand diary calls it “the old parks.” CW refers to it in the journal letter here as “a

garden” and on May 23 as “the orchard.”

11Verine is a family name in Cornwall, and “vellan” is used here to mean “mill.” Thus this mayhave been the name of a local mill, or a small hamlet surrounding such a mill. But no record of such hasbeen found.

12The manuscript text of this sermon has survived in two drafts (MARC, MA 1977/597/6 & MA1977/597/11). A transcription is available in Sermons, 270–76.

13The chapel stood on the west side of Meeting House Walk, an alley running south fromSnowsfields a short distance east of Crosby Row. It had been built in 1736 by Elizabeth Ginn for the useof a Unitarian Baptist preacher, Sayer Rudd. When Rudd fell out of favor with his benefactress andcongregation, the chapel was taken over by the Methodists, who occupied it for more than twenty years.

2James Erskine heard this sermon and took exception to CW’s suggestion that those who do notagree with the doctrine of “sinless perfection” in essence “plead for sin and Satan”, to his suggestion thatthe Puritans did not teach sanctification, and to his implying that anyone who does not attain sinlessperfection before death will not be saved. Erskine, Memorandum, April 23–25, 1745 (MARC, MA1977/503, Box 4, file 19).

1The MS Journal does not list a text. But this is a convenient place to list a sermon recorded in amanuscript volume by Samuel Roberts. Roberts dates the sermon as given in 1748 to the society in Leeds, but CW does not appear to have been in Leeds in either 1748 or 1749. Thus, this is as good of a guess asany for the date. For the text of the sermon, and more discussion, see Thomas R. Albin, “A New Sermonof the Rev. Charles Wesley as Recorded in an Early Methodist Manuscript,” Proceedings of the CharlesWesley Society 11 (2006–7), 35–45.

being deeply wounded by his dying love.”

NOTE: His 1751 preaching tour convinced CW that he could not balance family responsibilities with suchextended yearly excursions. From this point, he stayed closer to home, mainly going to London toprovide oversight when JW was on the road. After CW’s family moved to London in 1771, he madeoccasional similar trips back to Bristol. On a few occasions (like late 1756) JW persuaded CW to travel abit more broadly, and some journal letters survive from these trips. Otherwise, our sources are limitedlargely to occasional letters that CW wrote to his family when he was away from home, and somescattered second-hand reporters like the Bristol steward.

creation groaneth and traveleth in pain, waiting for the manifestation of the Sons of GOD. He firstobserved that the whole creation by the fall of man was is corrupted. Secondly, that it groaneth andwaiteth in expectation of deliverance. Third, that it shall regain its primitive beauty, its original splendour,by the creation of the new heavens and earth: or the recreating these again.”

The journal is anonymous, but obviously from Bath, and covers January–August 1769. It has beenconclusively identified as that of Thomas Parsons, a Bath stonecarver. He was the son of the foundingminister of the Bath [Particular] Baptist congregation. For February 19 it reads: “went and heard CharlesWesley from Isaiah.” I owe this reference to Peter Forsaith.

7Ibid. “Went with my friend to the Countess’s chapel, heard Charles Wesley from 8 Heb 10–11but it is absolutely impossible to give any tolerable account of his sermon which was one of the worst Iever heard. I don’t believe he thought before he mounted the throne.” I owe this reference to PeterForsaith.

8CW preached and baptized Ephraim and Ancona Robin. See WHS 18 (1932): 124.9JW opened this new chapel on City Road on November 1, 1778.10Letter to JW, June 16, 1779, Arminian Magazine 12 (1789): 441–42.11Letter to JW, November 28, 1779 (Bristol, Wesley College, D6/1/164). CW was in Bristol to

help address the challenge that Alexander McNab was raising to the authority of JW in appointingtraveling preachers.

12Letter to JW, December 1, 1779 (London, Wesley’s Chapel Museum).13Letter to JW, December 6, 1779 (MARC, DDWes 4/40).
