JUNE CLUB HUNTGary and Mindy Spiroch did the hard work of finding a
location, contacting the owner and setting it up for ourclub hunt on June 6th and 7th. Kudos for a job well done!
The first day of the hunt saw 12 members gather tohunt a large field that has held carnivals for many years. No tall weeds, just beautifully maintained grass and a fewtrees. It was a pleasure to work there!
Right off the bat member and photographer SteveHoskins found a spot and dug 26 quarters! Next he founda dollar coin! By the end of his 3 hour stay he had dugand collected $10!
Devin Stehr and Ashley Webbe arrived late andproceeded to find $4 within the first hour!
I do not have a record of what everyone found, but noone was unhappy and we all are looking forward toreturning in the very near future.
The property is private and you do need the writtenpermission that Gary Spiroch obtained and a call must bemade 24 hour ahead to advise the owner that you wouldlike to come in there. Gary and Mindy Spiroch haveadditional copies of the permission letter, if you need it.On Sunday, four members showed up and hunted for 2hours. More items were found. A large area was leftuntouched. THEN …AND NOW…If you wanted to go metal detecting in the 70’s and 80’s
you needed to buy (1) a metal detector, (2) cheapheadphones, (3) a carpenter’s apron and (4) a long-handledscrewdriver. Shazam! Done! Get your butt out there andstart swinging.
The good ole days….easy and uncomplicated.Today…it’s become a bit more complicated. You see we
don’t just need a metal detector. We need an expensive metaldetector! Why? Because the more they cost the more theyfind, and of course the more complex they are, the moreexpert we will look (or at least it will appear that way toothers). Also if the famous “Lucky Larry” is using a certainbrand and model, its hands down THE best on themarket. Why just look at what he’s finding!! Finally ifit’s available in camouflage, all the better, because camomachines go deeper, and make us look cool and macho at thesame time.
Then after we make all these thorough and well thoughtout decisions, we need accessories. Maybe a cover for it incase it rains or snows, a bag or hard case to store it in, andlet’s not forget coil covers. Don’t want the bottom to getdirty or scratched. If we are lucky these too will be availablein cameo. That way we can lose them from time to time, andhave fun pissing and moaning about it, and anyway, no bigdeal….we can always buy more and “put it on thecard”. It’s only money!
Next we absolutely have to have extra search coils. Big,small, wide, narrow and yes, even imported, because thefolks in Abbadabba, Slovenia know how to make coils thatare ‘perfectly tuned’ and ‘made to last’ whereas themanufacturer of our detector is stupid and doesn’t care abouteither of those things. Here’s hoping too that they come outwith cameo coils in the not too distant future, becausewe all know they will go deeper.
Hold on now, we are not done yet. We “have” to have apinpointer. Doesn’t matter what it cost, at long it has someorange on it (so we don’t lose it), and is waterproof to 10 feet(never know when we might fall in a lake or pool). Then ofcourse we will need a holster for it or a holder that attaches toour detector. Yeah, that would be real cool. Next comes adigger, or shovel, perhaps both, so we can recover coins, buttons, beer cans and bombs. Actually the shovel is verycool to have when you are knocking on doors. Homeownersjust love ‘em.
Finally if we are going to really look hip and macho, weneed a camouflage outfit, hat and a GoPro camera. That waywe can hide from the public, maybe get shot by a hunter, scare the hell out of the neighborhood, and if we are reallylucky, get it all on film. The downer of course if that wecan’t spend a lot of time detecting because we will have toget home to edit the film, post it on YouTube, and share thelink on the 200 detecting forums and Facebook pages. If,however, we don’t find anything cool we an always repostthe video of the gold ring we found last year. Hell, no onewill remember after all this time.Last and not least we will need camouflage snake boots.Ain’t nobody taking care of those tot lots anymore.
