MALLIA'S MOMENTS
by Fr. Joe Mallia
Happy Feast of Christ the King! For us as
believers this is kind of a new year's eve
celebration because next Sunday begins a
new liturgical season and a new year of
grace. We should really celebrate this
time. It is a good thing that in this past year
we have celebrated a full cycle of reflection
on the life of Jesus on earth and we also
contemplated the mystery of God's love
within our own lives. We shared in the joyful
times and we have shared in sad times, but
in all of it we have sought out the presence of
God. Think about all the service we were
able to provide, the education we gave to
children and adults, the laughs and outreach
to the community through our festivals and
the prayers we offered in worship of
God. Think about the people we welcomed
into the faith through the RCIA this past year
and the improvements we were able to make
to our buildings all while still improving our
overall financial health. There has been so
much good that has been accomplished this
year that we would be wrong not to rejoice in
what God has done for us. It has been a
year full of grace and we look forward to a
new year of grace as well.
The worst thing we can do is to only focus
on negative things. Faith requires us to
contemplate the whole of our reality, the good
and the bad. The ability to reflect allows us
to see where we have been and gives us a
clear direction to where we are going. That is
why it is so important that at these end of the
year celebrations, we take the opportunity to
take a deep spiritual breath, understand how
God has been active among us and to see
where we need to open ourselves up to a
more complete cooperation with God. In all
that we do and pray let God be praised and
may Jesus always be our King. God bless.
Thank you
I want to thank all those who had a hand in
making the auction at St. Augustine School
such a wonderful event and for the great
generosity of time, talent and treasure that people gave to raise
money for our school. I am fully aware of the hard work of a few
people and I am eternally grateful to them. That being said, we are in
need of more volunteers to run the auction. If you attended our
school, sent your children here in the past, presently have
grandchildren who are attending or you are just a kind hearted person
looking for a way to give a better future to children, we need you to
help coordinate our auction for next year. Please call the school office
for more information. Thank you in advance.

MALLIA’S MOMENTS Continued from Page 1
Christmas Masses and Penance Services
This year again we will be offering a number of
masses and penance services during the Advent
Season, and of course special masses for Christmas
and the feast of Mary the Mother of God, on January
1. This schedule will be in the church paper but also
included on the inside flap of the Christmas card that you
will shortly be receiving from us. Please post that
schedule in a place that you will not forget it. The cards
will be mailed out so that you should get them around
the first week of Advent. If you don't get a card, please
call us and let us know so that we can make sure you
are registered with the correct information. If you wish to
receive these mailings and are not yet registered, please
take the opportunity to register at either parish. All those
who are over the age of 18 and are no longer living at
home, should register on their own. This is especially
important if you are planning on getting married from
either parish in the future.
Simple reminder
In case of bad weather during the week, we will
cancel mass if the schools are also closed. Please do
not venture out if the roads are bad. During the
weekends, we always do our best to make sure the
parking lots and sidewalks are cleared before
mass. Either way, if you are not secure in driving or
walking in slippery weather, please use your best
judgment about attending mass. If it is bad on Saturday,
come on Sunday, or if the prediction is bad for Sunday,
come Saturday. I know we all like our routines, but this
time of year we are all held hostage by the occasional
snow storm.
Please be kind
With the holidays coming up, it is very possible to see
a few more people at mass that do not regularly
attend. Please go out of your way to make them feel
welcome, to move over and make room for them to sit,
and to maybe even introduce yourself. I am also urging
the ushers to be especially attentive to helping people
find a seat. It would be even better if we moved to the
front of the church as we arrived so that any late comers
do not need to feel uncomfortable by having to walk up
front and disturb mass by making everyone move
around.
Also, if you have small children, I ask that you please
put the carrier under the seat rather than on the pew
itself. That is a bit more room we need at some of the
masses for people to sit. I do not get upset with crying
babies, but I would ask that any toys that are brought to
church are soft toys rather than hard toys that make
noise when they fall and hit the pews. Thank you.
Finally,
I will be leaving for Malta on November 30th in the
evening and be returning on December 10th. I will be
going back to celebrate the Feast of the Immaculate
Conception. As you know I was appointed a Canon by
the Archbishop of Malta several years ago and as such, I
am urged to return to the parish to share in the various
liturgical rites and to pray with the other Canons. A Canon
was is a priest who is part of specially designated
parishes by the pope. Those priests used to serve
as advisors to the bishop and in case of the death of the
bishop or his retirement, would run the diocese until a new
bishop was named. That is why a Canon is allowed to
wear special vestments during processions and other
celebrations that show his connection to the bishop.
This is a special year for the Church of the Immaculate
Conception in Cospicua Malta. This year we mark the
75th anniversary of the return of the statue and the titular
painting from the church it was taken to during the
bombings during World War II. During the war, the harbor
area of Malta was heavily bombed because of the location
of the British Navy. The priests of the church had the
statue and the painting taken by night out of the church to
a more remote area of the island for safe keeping. They
promised God that if the church was not destroyed during
the bombings, they would carry the statue and the
painting back. Malta was the world’s worst bombed place
during the war because of its strategic location. In fact at
one point of the war, the total tonnage of bombs that fell in
London was falling in Malta every 18 hours. Through the
grace of God, although every building around the church
and even other churches were destroyed, this one was
not. The priests and the population of Malta were faithful
to their word and on the 19th of November, they held a
procession carrying the statue and the painting back.
While I am gone, I will be praying for you, please pray
for me and I will see you when I get back. May the Lord
bless you and Mary our Mother intercede for you.

Creator of all things, true source of light and
wisdom, origin of all being, graciously let a ray
of your light penetrate the darkness of my
understanding. Take from me the double
darkness in which I have been born, an
obscurity of sin and ignorance. Give me a keen
understanding, a retentive memory, and the
ability to grasp things correctly and
fundamentally. Grant me the talent of being
exact in my explanations and the ability to
express myself with thoroughness and charm.
Point out the beginning, direct the progress,
and help in the completion. I ask this through
Christ our Lord, Amen.

Giving Thanks
I like to take the time during the Thanksgiving season
with my students before we fill our bellies with turkey,
mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie to fill our hearts with
thankfulness and praise to God for all He has given us!
We discuss what it means to be thankful and blessed and
ways we can show that thankfulness to God.
I am always amazed at their answers and how well
they grasp what the real meaning of Thanksgiving is! This
year I am truly thankful for a great and supporting group
of people to work with, a wonderful class, and my loving
family. I wanted to share the great answers my class
gave on their giving thanks turkeys.
☺ Ethan: mommy, aunts, grandma, grandpa, and daddy
☺ Kenadee: mom, dad, my baby, toys, and God
☺ Josh: everyone in this class, Cork my stuffed animal,
my cat, Legos
☺ Skylar: snow, Thanksgiving, food, toys
☺ Joey: snowball fights, going on trips, going on the boat
with my family, mommy, daddy, my sister, and brother
☺ Autumn: my books, my whole family, trees that grow,
God doing everything for us
☺ Owen: my dog, my family, grandma, grandpa, and my
cousins
☺ James: Big Jack, Josh, Ella, Jack, Charlie, Star Wars
toys, and a dinosaur that moves by itself
☺ Lincoln: Granna, Nana, Big Pa, Auntie, Aunt Bay, and
