As Christians, we are so blessed that Jesus conquered death and rose from the grave Easter day. It assures us of our own resurrection to eternal life with God. Yet, there are so many who cannot wrap their minds around such a concept. They see all life as finite and cannot look beyond the grave to something more than their rational minds can fathom. Admittedly, I once struggled with this reality in my younger years and at some point, had ruled it out as a possibility. The irony of my own spiritual journey was that the older and more educated I got, the more I came to realize how little I actually knew. It is comforting to know that I was not unique in this sense. Many of us go through those periods when, after a couple of courses in philosophy and physics, we believe we have amassed the wisdom of the ages. In this attitude of self-deception, we forget that education is not the same as knowledge, and knowledge is not a substitute for faith. That’s why I am encouraged when I read how brilliant, logical, and highly educated people had their own epiphanies and experienced the reality of the living God in their lives. C. S. Lewis is a good example. But there have been others who, in their own way, came to accept the reality of life beyond this existence. One notable example was the late Dr. Wernher von Braun. Arguing for the continued existence of the soul, his idea lead to a logical reinforcement to the reality of the resurrection. In this connection, Dr. Von Braun wrote: “Many people seem to feel that science has somehow made ‘religious ideas’ untimely or old fashioned. But I think science has a real surprise for skeptics. Science, for instance, tells us that nothing in nature, not even the tiniest particle, can disappear without a trace. Nature does not know extinction. All it knows is transformation. Now if God applies this fundamental principle of indestructibility to the most minute and insignificant parts of His universe, does it not make sense to assume that He applies it to the human soul? I think it does. And everything science has taught me and continues to teach me strengthens my belief in the continuity of our spiritual existence after death. Nothing disappears without a trace.” 1 For me, the resurrection is an absolute reality. It is the ultimate gift from a gracious God who loves us even when we think He doesn’t exist. Thanks be to God that our souls will not disappear without a trace. Happy Easter! A Message from Thack

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church

Daphne, Alabama

Alleluia. Christ is risen! As Christians, we are so blessed that Jesus conquered death

and rose from the grave Easter day. It assures us of our own resurrection to eternal life with

God. Yet, there are so many who cannot wrap their minds around such a concept. They see all

life as finite and cannot look beyond the grave to something more than their rational minds can

fathom. Admittedly, I once struggled with this reality in my younger years and at some point,

had ruled it out as a possibility. The irony of my own spiritual journey was that the older and

more educated I got, the more I came to realize how little I actually knew.

It is comforting to know that I was not unique in this sense. Many of us go through those

periods when, after a couple of courses in philosophy and physics, we believe we have amassed

the wisdom of the ages. In this attitude of self-deception, we forget that education is not the

same as knowledge, and knowledge is not a substitute for faith. That’s why I am encouraged

when I read how brilliant, logical, and highly educated people had their own epiphanies and

experienced the reality of the living God in their lives. C. S. Lewis is a good example.

But there have been others who, in their own way, came to accept the reality of life

beyond this existence. One notable example was the late Dr. Wernher von Braun. Arguing for

the continued existence of the soul, his idea lead to a logical reinforcement to the reality of the

resurrection. In this connection, Dr. Von Braun wrote: “Many people seem to feel that science

has somehow made ‘religious ideas’ untimely or old fashioned. But I think science has a real

surprise for skeptics. Science, for instance, tells us that nothing in nature, not even the tiniest

particle, can disappear without a trace. Nature does not know extinction. All it knows is

transformation. Now if God applies this fundamental principle of indestructibility to the most

minute and insignificant parts of His universe, does it not make sense to assume that He

applies it to the human soul? I think it does. And everything science has taught me and

continues to teach me strengthens my belief in the continuity of our spiritual existence after

death. Nothing disappears without a trace.”1

For me, the resurrection is an absolute reality. It is the ultimate gift from a gracious God

who loves us even when we think He doesn’t exist. Thanks be to God that our souls will not

disappear without a trace. Happy Easter!

Peace, Thack

Dear Friends,

Thank you to everyone for their thoughts and prayers during my illness. Thank

you for all the cards, flowers and food. A special thanks to New Song for learning some of

the old gospel songs of my childhood and coming by the house for my very own concert.

Please continue keeping me in your daily prayers.

Peace,

Scott Morrow

Sunday School Class on Prayer starting April 10 for 5 sessions.

Matthew 6:6. “But when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your

Father who is in secret. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

Do you pray in secret as Matthew suggests? Are your prayers always answered, sometimes

answered, or never answered? And what is the “answer” anyway?

The recent film “The War Room” tackled these and other questions about prayer. Regardless

of whether you have seen the film or not, this Sunday school class provides some insight from

the film to help develop a plan for praying effectively. It does not guarantee all your prayers

will be answered, but does offer ways to grow your prayer life. Short film clips from the movie

bring “real life” situations to bear on praying and spiritual development. Whether or not you

are content with how you pray, this class offers Bible-based strategies to improve and en-

hance your prayer time.

Please, come and join us at 9:15 in Malone Hall; have some coffee and donuts and join with

other parishioners in a thought provoking and useful 45 minutes on Sunday morning.

Questions? E-mail or call Mark Costlow, Facilitator. [email protected]; 391-1299.

Thank You!

Holy Week was wonderful and would not have happened without the help of the many

volunteers and employees who faithfully offered their time and talents. My special thanks go

out to Phyllis Bruce, Elizabeth Kaye and the Altar Guild who prepared the altar for the many

services; to Rebecca Dyson, Mickie Baria and the Flower Guild who made the worship space

and narthex so beautiful; to Joan McKnight and the many volunteers who lovingly care for our

beautiful courtyard; to Jeanne Alton and the Cooking Ministry for all they do; the parish staff,

especially Mary Alice, Terri, Joan, Elizabeth, and Mark for their enormous help; to Paul

Anderson and the Choir and Clay Rankin and New Song who practiced long and hard to make

the music so wonderful for all the services; to Howard Wilson for his abiding presence and help

when needed, including his Holy Fire on Holy Saturday; to Gaye Wilson and the vestry for their

help throughout the week; to the acolytes, servers, lectors, chalice ministers, ushers, greeters,

Vergers, and Lay Eucharistic Visitors, who helped to make the worship services so special; to

Elizabeth Faust, Linda McNamara and the volunteers who put on another successful Seder

Meal on Tuesday of Holy Week. Finally, I want to thank our Bishop, Russell Kendrick, for mak-

ing Confirmation on the night of the Easter Vigil so joyous and memorable. It was truly a

HOLY WEEK! Thack
