CREATIVE WORLD The Echo of India Kolkata Tuesday March 27 , 2018 PAGE-10 I might write a book on my Bollywood journey: Katrina MUMBAI, MARCH 26 /--/ She is one of the top stars in the Hindi film industry and now Katrina Kaif is planning to share her journey, which was full of ups and downs, in the form a book. The actor, who made her Bollywood debut with 2003 film "Boom" was initially criticised for her acting abilities and dancing skills, but she has come a long way. When asked how she handled herself in an industry which was alien to her, Katrina said she is saving the answer for now. "I educated myself (about the industry) but I might write a book (on it), so I won't waste the answer now. I seriously might write a book," she told PTI. Though the actor has had some of the biggest blockbusters to her credit, most recently being "Tiger Zinda Hai", she has also seen low phases in her career, spanning nearly 15 years. Katrina, however, considers the setbacks as the stepping stones to her success. "You need to have a balanced attitude to life, need to accept that failures, hardships and hard times -- for me definitely -- they are the biggest teachers. They (failures) are the biggest steps. Once you get there, then you reach higher. You need them. Hardship and failures taught me to evolve and reach the next step," she said. "I am constantly trying to educate myself by reading about peoples' journeys, taking care of my mind and making sure I am evolving as a person and not just accepting whatever thoughts come to my mind," she added. Katrina said she never had a plan B for her career as she always dreamt of being a movie star. "There was no back-up plan. Having a plan B is like accepting failure. I have never had a plan B for anything. You can say that is not the correct way to go (about something) maybe," she said. Katrina, who became the face of an NGO supporting girls education, said there is disparity in basic education between the privileged and the underprivileged. "The more we ignore it, the more we are living in denial," she said. (PTI) Life and times of Rosogolla inventor NC Das set for screen debut IIT students to conduct study on reframing biological clock NEW DELHI, MARCH 26 /--/ The students of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Hyderabad are going to conduct a research on whether technologies like IVF are helping in reframing the "biological clock" and giving mothers more time to conceive. The project, titled "A Preliminary Study of Ageing and Assisted Reproduction in India", has been sanctioned a funding of Rs 25 lakh under the Wellcome UK Small Projects Grant for 2018. The researchers are going to undertake a study on the ways in which ageing is conceptualised through In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) by researching on elderly couples conceiving and giving birth to children in north India with the help of the technology. "The aim of the research is to contribute conceptually and through field data to ongoing and future research on assisted conception, infertility and reproduction in India. "This will include publications emerging from research and the development of a larger research project that will look at the impact that societal and environmental factors have on the increasing fears of declining fertility in urban India," Anindita Majumdar, Assistant Professor at IIT Hyderabad who will be leading the group of researchers, said. The research firmly embeds itself within the emerging issues of "biological clock" and declining fertility, which have a long-term significance on demographic and population trends as well as on the social care and responsibilities of an ageing population. The project will commence in April and include fieldwork and a conference on "Reframing the Biological Clock: Exploring Ethnographic Research on Ageing and Reproduction" in August with presentations from academics across the world. The conference will focus on ongoing research on the aspects of ageing reproductive body and how technology and society imagine childbirth and families in such a context. (PTI) Victoria Beckham to launch skincare collection LONDON, MARCH 26 /-- / Fashion designer Victoria Beckham has announced that she will soon be launching a skincare line. The 43-year-old entrepreneur revealed her business plans in a Facebook Live video from her store in Dover Street. Beckham said with the success of her 14-piece collaboration with high- end cosmetics chain Estee Lauder two years ago, a skincare collection was a natural next step. She added she felt the need to go for a skincare line with certain products that were missing from her beauty regime. "I'm developing my own skincare and fragrance now. I make what I want in my life. It's a filling a gap. As a woman, I want to make the things that I need in my life, the things that are missing," the former Spice Girl said. The tightly designed makeup collection ranged from smoky eyeshadows to nude lip glosses. The products sold out immediately. She added that she was working with top ingredients, latest technologies and trying to learn as much as she could. "I'm having fun with the skincare, it's going to be very scientific. I'm working with the best. "I really want to learn. I want to educate myself." (PTI) LOS ANGELES, MARCH 26 /--/ "This Is Us" star Chrissy Metz has opened up about her life in a new memoir "This Is Me" where she details facing physical and emotional abuse at the hands of her stepfather. The 37-year-old star, who grew up in poverty, shot to international fame with her portrayal of Kate Pearson on the hit TV show. The actor said when she was 8 years old, her father left her mother Denise to raise Chrissy and her two elder siblings - - Monica and Philip. Her mother had another baby with a boyfriend before she met their future stepfather, Trigger. "I'm a tough cookie. But it's one of those things that attempts to break your spirit" Metz told People magazine. The actor said while her stepfather loved his biological children, he was offended by the way she looked."My mom married Trigger at the courthouse. Soon she was pregnant again, with another girl, Abigail. Trigger loved his two biological children, and was even welcoming to Morgana. Me, not so much. My mother was always at work, so she didn't see how he treated me. "My body seemed to offend him, but he couldn't help but stare, especially when I was eating. He joked about putting a lock on the refrigerator. We had lived with a lack of food for so long that when it was there, I felt like I had to eat it before it disappeared. Food was my only happiness," she writes in the book. Scared of her stepfather's scrutiny of her food, the actor said she started to hide what she ate. "And so, I began to hide my eating. I'd get up in the middle of the night and eat. I'd sneak food to eat in the bathroom. Cookies, chips. Things I could eat as fast as possible to avoid detection. Things that would give me the brief bliss of numbness. "I don't remember why Trigger hit me the first time. He never punched my face. Just my body, the thing that offended him so much. He shoved me, slapped me, punched my arm. He would hit me if he thought I looked at him wrong. I remember being on the kitchen floor after he knocked me over, and I was begging to know what I did. He just shoved me hard with his foot." Metz said as she entered her teens, the abuse became worse and her stepfather would often ask her to weigh herself and then ridicule her. "When I was fourteen, Trigger began weighing me. He'd get the scale from the bathroom and clang it hard on the kitchen floor. 'Well, get on the damn thing!' Trigger would yell. 'This is what you need to know'. "He sat in a chair next to the scale as I got on. Good God almighty!' he yelled every single time. The number then was about 140 or 130. Most of my friends weighed about ninety pounds. 'Why are you getting fatter?' he demanded. I look at pictures of me from that time, and I would be so fine with being that size now. But I thought I was gigantic." The actor said her beating had escalated by that time and once she thought "if I had a gun, I thought, I would shoot you." Metz said she felt conflicted about hating her stepfather as she really loved him. "Afterward, I was so upset with myself. How could I think that about this person I loved so much? Because I really did love him. This man did more for me than my father ever did. He was smart, and I was allowed to quietly join him in watching the Ken Burns Civil War documentaries on television. I clung to (it) because I needed to figure out why this person could do right by me as a provider, but be unable to love me." (PTI) Donald Glover, FX exit 'Deadpool' animated series LOS ANGELES, MARCH 26 /- -/ Donald Glover, Stephen Glover and FX network have exited the planned "Deadpool" animated series due to "creative differences". "I would do nothing different. Surrendering to @ShoojitSircar vision and being directed by him has been one of my biggest achievements. "We can only grow when we work with people more talented then us and this experience for me has been just that. #October," Varun tweeted. This is the director's first full-fledged attempt at a love story. "October" is a slice-of-life film written by Shoojit's frequent collaborator Juhi Chaturvedi. "I'm aware that people are pretending to be me on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Please do not respond, give money or your personal information... I am working from my end to stop these folks as best as possible," Jackman wrote. (PTI) MUMBAI,MARCH 26 /--/ The remake version of Madhuri Dixit's chartbuster song "Ek Do Teen" for the upcoming "Baaghi 2" has received flak from the audience and lead actor Tiger Shroff says the team was prepared for mixed reactions as they were tampering with a classic. "Baaghi 2" recently launched the revamped version of "Ek Do Teen", a cult song from 1988 superhit film "Tezaab" which originally featured Madhuri dancing to the choreography of Saroj Khan. The new track sees Jacquline Fernandez step into her shoes. Shortly after its release, the song started getting mixed reviews and reportedly, even Saroj and "Tezaab" director N Chandra took offence to the way the number has been picturised. When asked about it, Tiger said it was expected. "I thought that was expected, it was obvious. When you do a remake you are bound to get mixed reactions," he said in a group interview here. The 28-year-old actor says the idea behind recreating "Ek Do Teen" was to pay tribute to a legend like Madhuri. "Nobody can match up to her (Madhuri), you can put that out there and make it clear," he said. Showering praise on Jacqueline, the "Heropanti" actor said she did a wonderful job with the new version. "Jacquline worked very hard and did a good job on her part. Ganesh Acharya did a great job by choreographing it. He was a dancer in the song when Madhuri ma'am was doing it. "In no way were we trying to blow our trumpet and horns, that wasn't the idea. The idea was to relive the tune of 'Ek Do Teen'. That's all." His "Baaghi 2" co-star Disha Patani says she was not disheartened by how the song had been received and said one must look at the positive side - that it is garnering such massive views online. "It's doing so well...has received so many million views. Look at the positive. Views matter, trust me. It got so many views in one day, it's not bad," she said. The 25- year-old actor said it is unfair for people to draw comparisons between the two songs. "She (Madhuri) is an icon, the song is iconic and this is just a tribute. It's nothing close to her (what she did), it's a modern remix for the new generation, those who were not born in that era to just enjoy the new song." "Baaghi 2" is set to release on March 30. (PTI) Chrissy says stepfather abused her over her weight Mixed reaction expected when you remake: Tiger on 'Ek Do Teen' KOLKATA, MARCH 26 /--/ A feature film on the life and times of 'Rosogolla' inventor in Bengal, Nobin Chandra Das, in 19th century Kolkata as the backdrop, is set to hit the screens by this year-end. The Bengali film 'Rosogolla' seeks to capture the journey of Das, from a humble background to a business tycoon. Das had invented Rosogolla by dipping cotton cheese ball in sugary syrup (in 1868) after trying various combinations. The film is being directed by Pavel and produced by Shiboprosad Mukhopadhyay and Nandita Roy, directors of a string of blockbusters. "Being a feature film, it is not a biopic. It is partly based on real-life events and there are some fictional accounts," the director told PTI. To recreate the settings perfectly, he studied the preserved works at the Victoria Memorial, including paintings by Thomas and William Daniels, Calcutta Gazette, besides works of researchers such as P T Nair and others, Pavel said. Pavel said, "The film traces the journey of Das, who is the protagonist. It captures the discovery of the spongy syrupy sweet by him after months of efforts in 1868. It also focusses on the love life of a young Das." Das, also called 'Columbus of Rosogolla' in Kolkata, died in 1925 at the age of 80. "We will trace the life of Nobin Chandra Das from the age of six to 32-33. His childhood days and how he set up the first modest outlet in Kolkata and he came to be known as 'Nobin Moira'. "There will also be a reference to the sweet being first liked by a Marwari businessman who then spread word about the new sweet and there was no looking back for Das thereafter," Pavel said on the sidelines of an event where a corporate group announced presenting the film for audience. Contemporaries of Das who were also in the business - Bhola Moira, and Bhim Chandra Nag - will also be featured in the film. "The 'Rosogolla Bhavan', ancestral place of the sweet maker's family in Baghbazar, will also come up," Pavel said. Asked about the response of the family of K C Das, Nobin Chandra's successor and owners of one of the leading sweetmeat chains in the country, the director said, "After hearing the story they were very very encouraging from day one. The family of K C Das is happy that we are making the film." Asked if he was inspired to do the film after Bengal got the GI tag for 'Banglar Rosogolla', Pavel said "On the contrary I had made up my mind to do a feature film on the Rosogolla maker in early 2016 and then started doing research and writing the script. I am thankful that Shiboprosad Mukhopadhyay and Nandita Roy kept faith in me." After completing research, the shooting began and the film is now slated for release by this December, he said. "We did not interfere in his shoots. There is no Shiboprosad-Nandita Film School and we give complete freedom to directors working with our production house. Pavel is a better director than me," Shiboprosad said. (PTI)
