ukiaHaiku

It all started with a rearview-mirrored glance at this sign thirteen years ago.

Today, the accidental palindrome of ukiaHaiku has grown into an internationally recognized poetry festival that brings participants of all ages and nationalities together to compete in this venerable, infinitely creative form of expression. Ukiah has become a bubbling cauldron

of poetic activities, with its own Poet Laureate (see page 12) and intense focus on poetry in the schools, poetry slams, readings, and special events.

Looking in her car’s rear view mirror at the two-way sign welcoming visitors to Ukiah, Susan Sparrow realized the serendipitous palindrome. “Seeing it backwards, you see the word haiku; I thought that was great,” she says.

Being a mover and shaker, she went into action and with the support of fellow members of Ukiah’s poet laureate committee—Armand Brint, Sherrie Smith-Ferri, Mike Harris, and Brad McClanahan—she and the late Dori Anderson planted the seed.

“A lot of the genesis for the ukiaHaiku Festival had to do with the make up of the committee; it was new, we were looking for projects and one of our mandates was to promote poetry

in the community,” she says.

The first festival was held in April of 2003 at the Grace Hudson Museum in Ukiah. Letters sent to schools and word of mouth served as publicity and the venue was filled to overflowing; submissions and numbers of attendees were beyond expectation.

A group of judges from the Poet Laureate Committee of Ukiah (see page 12) sorted, selected, and judged, with at least two or three sets of eyes on entries for each of the five or six original categories. Through a process of winnowing and negotiation, they came up with selections for first, second, third, and honorable mentions.

Committee members’ initial understanding of this centuries-old Japanese written art form was at first limited to a strict adherence to a seventeen-syllable count and the standard three lines—the first of five syllables, the second of seven, and the third of five. Submissions not meeting these basic criteria were discarded.

But their primary mission was to expose local students to haiku with its 5-7-5 syllable format, highly accessible to all ages—especially playing to the strengths of younger children—and to teach them how to write it; poets were sent into the schools to guide teachers.

Haiku’s roots stretch back a thousand years but its present form goes back to the seventeenth century when Japanese poet master Matsunaga Teitoku (1571–1654) popularized the elegance of tanka —[thirty-one-syllable poem traditionally written in a single line], 5-7-5-7-7, and renga, [a collaborative composition of poems in which poets worked in pairs or small groups that] chained verses with up to hundreds of links. He taught the classic elements to his finest student Matsuo Basho (1644–1694) who created more than one thousand verse-poems, trained more than two thousand students, refined haiku’s simplicity and depth, and is credited with making it a revered form of poetry. One hundred years after his death he was deified by the Shinto bureaucracy and thirteen years later by the Imperial Court of ancient Kyoto.

Haiku caught on in the West in the fifties when beat poets Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, and Gary Snyder made the form their own. Soon Americans were hooked on it, moving toward its mystical and spiritual elements, creating a cultural bridge with Japan. Other American poets focused on surrealism, political themes, and the interconnectedness of humans and the natural world.

a sleepless spring nightyearning for what I never hadand for what never was

Richard Wright, Haiku: This Other World, 1998

In the late sixties, just about the time when the Haiku Society of America was founded, Jane Reichhold, internationally renowned haiku master, engaged in her first aha moment. On her way back from a trip to San Francisco to pick up a load of clay for her ceramic studio, she needed a break and stopped at City Lights bookstore in San Francisco's North Beach. Walking around the bargain table she found a twenty-five-cent book of haiku translation by Peter Beilenson and Harry Behn and returned to her van where she would spend the night. With flashlight in hand she started reading; she couldn’t stop.

“I felt it at a deep level; here was the heart of poetry. I couldn’t figure out why I hadn’t come across it earlier; I’d been to college and studied literature yet no one had told me about haiku,” she says from her current ridgetop home overlooking the Pacific Ocean just outside of Gualala, California.

Her new kick wheel was still outside her studio because its balance was not yet just right. “You put your thumbs down the middle of the clay, grip it and pull upwards; when you feel that clay moving in your hands it’s a special moment and at that very moment, a bird trilled. And I had the bird; I had the feeling of the sound of the bird pulled into the shape of the pot. I though that was what the Japanese wrote about, this kind of experience, and realized I could have it, too.” She started writing what she thought were haiku, using the standard seventeen syllables.

In 1970 she moved to Hamburg, Germany, to be with her husband Werner and immersed herself, reading everything she could find. She recognized that what she had been writing was not good or real haiku and began writing shorter haiku, no longer using strict syllabication. It became her world.

“I don’t have to leave it. Everything I can feel, think, dream or envision can be said with haiku or one of its related forms.” This is her haiku called Counting. Find more at her website, ahapoetry.com

Jane Reichhold, from LYNX, A Journal for Linking Poets with Renga and Tanka, June 2013

She and her husband left Germany in 1980 and moved to Point Arena, California where her focus on haiku deepened. She studied it day and night, akin to her support system. When things became weird she would take her mind out of her body and put it where interesting things were happening.

“Japanese poetry does not tell you what to think or feel or be; it tells you what is and that is the beauty of it. It is written in the moment, keeping you in the now, and the now is usually very good.

“I see haiku as the very kernel of poetry because for me poetry is not something written with ragged margins; poetry happens when the reader enters the writer’s words; that’s when it begins.

“It happens easiest, quickest, cleanest, and strongest with haiku. When you read it you go, oh, oh, oh. You see connections, symbols, all kinds of things…and that’s poetry; you’ve entered into it. You get levels, through a description of a scene or metaphysically.”

Through mingling and sharing poetry with inland poets, Reichhold became aware of the Ukiah haiku committee, took them under her wing and advocated for a wider interpretation of the form. With her passion and expertise she was a guiding force, providing books she had published, written both by herself and other haiku poets.

“Jane was persistent and she convinced us over time of her desire to broaden our understanding of haiku, opening us to accept a wider range of content. She has a very liberal view of the form that fits with a Western mentality. Some of the best haiku, those not responding to the strict syllable count, were being thrown out. English syllables don’t match with Japanese sound units so we transitioned to lines of short, long, short, a structure that better reflects the spirit of the Japanese verse providing more flexibility, spontaneity and creativity,” says former Ukiah Poet Laureate Armand Brint.

With no mechanism for the poet laureate committee to raise money, Reichhold suggested an international category that people would pay to enter, helping to support the festival financially and opening it to a wider audience. With that, the sale of the published booklet of winners and the generous support of sponsors, the ukiahHaiku Festival flourished and will be holding its thirteenth annual event on Sunday, April 26 at SPACE Theater, corner of Perkins and Dora Street, Ukiah, with winning poets reading their works at 2:00 p.m. Entry for all categories is now free.

The committee was receiving submissions from out of county, out of state, and out of country and they decided to limit and bring it back home with the exception of the Reichhold competition accepting poems from anyone, anywhere.

Regional categories are open to residents of Mendocino, Humboldt, Lake, and Sonoma Counties, with winners receiving a certificate, publication in a booklet of winning haiku and a copy of the booklet. Last year’s entries totaled 1,770.

The Jane Reichhold International Prize category, with last year's entries totaling 379, included submissions from fifteen states and twenty-four countries. Winners receive monetary awards provided by the author: $100, first place; $50, second place; $25, third place; plus a certificate, publication in a booklet of winning haiku, and a copy of the booklet.

Reichhold reads every one of them, several times, and has picked a variety of winners, some with seventeen syllables, some very short, some very modern; she feels it when a good haiku comes before her. “It’s a matter of the heart. There are many well-written haiku that break no rules, perfectly constructed; it comes down to what sticks in the heart of the judge,” she says.

Four years ago, expanding on what they had in place, two categories for Spanish speakers were added to the four categories of general topics, the two categories of haiku about Ukiah for grades K–12 including the Dori Anderson Prize for adults, and the International Competition.

Although the requirements for structural rigidity have been modified, judges are still looking for traditional elements—the fragment and the phrase, a moment in nature, a seasonal reference, the essence of the form.

Former Ukiah Poet Laureate Dan Barth opened the eleventh annual ukiaHaiku Festival of 2013 to a full house seated inside the Space Theater on a hot Sunday afternoon—“those here today are the crème de la crème”—where the young, the old, and the very young took their turns on stage reading winning entries, carefully and twice, to an appreciative audience.

Second-grader Casey Snodgrass, dressed in jacket and tie, won first place in the K-6 category.

Afterwards, in the entryway surrounded by well wishers and his proud parents, he explained his process. “We were on a hike for a field trip at Low Gap Park where we got to play. When it was time to go home we were walking and I saw the old cars on the side of the road. They were all rusty and covered with dust. Our teacher gave us a piece of paper and a pencil so we could write down stuff we saw. When I got back to the classroom she helped me spell some words.”

Just outside the entrance, Annette Makino, originally from Redwood Valley and presently a resident of Humboldt County, was excited to win first prize in the Adult General category and the Adult Haiku About Ukiah.

Makino writes haiku and combines the poems with Japanese ink paintings, part of the tradition in Japan called haiga, where the words and the images deepen the meaning. She also creates a related form of Japanese poetry called senryo, similar to haiku, with the poems being humorous and having more to do with human nature. Her inspiration comes from everyday life: her children, her dogs, and the landscape in Northern California.

Brint, winner of the Jane Reichhold International Prize in 2013 says, “In some ways you have to intuit and in some ways you have to deeply understand the form. Haiku is reflective of a certain sensibility that derives from an Eastern point of view. What we are used to in the West, making our poems about human affairs, doesn’t apply so much in haiku. There is very little embellishment and it can be very difficult to work in such a compressed form."

"The haiku poem conveys the moment through nature imagery and evokes emotions such as beauty, solitude, impermanence, those that resonate with Eastern philosophy. It can include gentle humor but very little that is egocentric.”

Armand Brint, Adult, General Topics, Third Place, 2013

This year Brint developed three lesson plans for distribution to teachers with the intent of developing and enhancing students’ capacity to write haiku. “It’s been corroborated over the years that the younger kids often tend to write the best haiku. It takes a lot of awareness and it’s also a form that responds to spontaneity; that’s what they are about,” he says.

The first lesson, on structure, explains that the old syllable form of 5-7-5 is perfectly fine but the practice is more recently thought of in terms of short line, long line, and short line. Two of the three lines are referred to as “phrase” and the other line as “fragment.” The lines of the phrase are connected in syntax and meaning, and the fragment, the single line, are related to the phrase, often with juxtaposition to it, creating a twist (an aha!). The three lines together complete a single moment experienced in nature.

The central theme, the point of view, is one of nature, including a seasonal reference, recording a unique experienced moment. Humans rarely appear in a haiku as they are considered just one aspect in the larger context of the environment. A good haiku contains one or two strong sensory images drawn from nature, related to the seasons, and containing a seasonal word or image that anchors it to a particular time of the year. Grounded in a philosophical perspective embracing the idea that everything is transitory, impermanent, gives haiku its power and pathos. Much like a photograph, it is intended to capture a moment in time.

Bill Churchill, current Ukiah Poet Laureate, Judges and Committee Members, 2014

The language of haiku is stripped down to its barest essentials, with nothing extraneous; words are concrete and unadorned—no unnecessary adjectives, figurative language, abstraction or rhyming. The thing or noun stands for itself with no embellishments. The grammar is bare bones with no capitals, no punctuation.

It is intended to evoke emotions—beauty, solitude, impermanence, gentle humor, compassion, joy, poignancy, and peace. It does not deal in reverie from the past or ideation of the future. The point is to express the present moment in simple, direct language. The best express a sudden insight.

Adam Chmielnicki, Poland, Jane Reichhold International Prize, Honorable Mention, 2014

For those ready to engage, Reichhold offers some sage advice. “Read past winners; read haiku from translations from the Japanese masters; take a walk and open yourself to the world and to people. Do it with the intention of letting everything in, open to what is there, because the world is so fantastic. When it comes into you it comes in on images or sounds or feelings or touch or taste…and there’s the haiku. It’s best if haiku is dedicated to things that are blooming, growing, positive, uplifting. My haikus are gifts from the universe and I give them to everyone else to make the world better.”

The ukiaHaiku Festival has become internationally known, identifying Ukiah with art, with haiku, the most frequently written poetic form, and promoting poetry as an accessible public activity, one that has become part of the thriving community of haiku poets worldwide.

The Poet Laureate Program of Ukiah

by Theresa Whitehill

The Ukiah Poet Laureate Program came about because of a group of Ukiah residents who peti-tioned the Ukiah City Council to establish a pro-gram based on the example of many California cities who have programs to promote poetry in public awareness.

The founding group included poetry event pro-ducers Susan Sparrow and Hal Zina Bennett, city librarian Dory Anderson, Grace Hudson Museum Director Sherrie Smith-Ferri, and poet Armand Brint. They were inspired by the example of Lake County’s first poet laureate, Jim Lyle.

Historically, the title “poet laureate” dates back to sixteenth century Britain; it was conferred by the monarch on a poet whose duty it was to compose commemorative odes and verse. The United States Poet Laureate Program began in 1937 when the position was called “consultant in poetry to the Library of Congress,” changed to “poet laureate” in 1986.

Over the last several years, states, cities, and towns have begun to appoint their own poets laureate to locally foster what past U.S. Poet Laureate Robert Haas called “a shared literate, public culture.” In the state of California, there are currently approximately forty statewide, city, or county poet laureate programs.

In April of 2001, in conjunction with National Po-etry Month, the Ukiah City Council appointed its first poet laureate, Armand Brint. It also set up a committee to work with the poet laureate in shaping the office, developing special events and activities and selecting future poets laureate. The Poet Laureate Committee is composed of rep-resentatives from the city of Ukiah, Grace Hud-son Museum, Ukiah Public Library, Ukiah High School, The Ukiah Writers Read Series, at-large members and poets laureate (current and most recent past). The position honors poets living and working in the Ukiah area.

The only other poet laureate program in the county has been in Point Arena, where Fionna Per-kins was appointed to a lifetime position for the city of Point of Arena, a position she only relinquished upon her death in 2012.

The Ukiah Poet Laureate Program is most visible for having developed the ukiaHaiku Festival, now in its thirteenth year. In addition, the Ukiah Poet Laureate Committee sponsors and produces many poetry readings and projects, including Wa-tershed Poetry Mendocino, a sibling to Berkeley’s Watershed Environmental Poetry Festival, and the Favorite Poem Project, originally inspired by U.S. Poet Laureate Robert Hass. Many of Ukiah’s poets laureate have spent considerable volun-teer time in the local classrooms over the past fourteen years, providing curriculum on haiku and poetry in general.

Occasionally, in Poetry Month, the Ukiah city councilmembers have brought poems to read at meetings, a refreshing change from city business, and Ukiah poets laureate have also been asked to compose poems for special civic occasions, including the opening of the Ukiah Skate Park in 2011. The city’s Observatory Park has a laby-rinth created from plantings of grasses in which plaques are featured that have been decorated with haiku by local school children.

One important aspect of the Poet Laureate Pro-gram is to help demystify poetry—to expose more people, more often, to the joys and benefits of reading and writing poetry. Poetry is, after all, often a natural response to life’s most intense epi-sodes. As the poet William Carlos Williams put it so well, “It is hard to get the news from poems, but men die miserably every day from lack of what is found there.” REM
