Summer has arrived and the heat is on. Competition is on too—golf, tennis, swimming, and pickleball—
both long-term and new members are joining in these activities. Get to know each other. Have some fun. In
addition to competitive events, outdoor events like our Sip and Wag held recently enable even your pups to
be involved and socialize. Indoor events like Sunday Brunches, Chef’s Dinners (thanks Chef Mario and
Antonio and staff), and Happy Hours are always happening.
As I go around the club, I’m so impressed with the improvements already done and those in progress. Tennis courts are being
resurfaced; new pool equipment has been ordered; golf course improvements are ongoing.
Sunburst, our annual member-guest golf tournament, is coming up June 5-8. It’s always a spectacular premier event, in which 60
of our golf members each invite a guest to play. Their ladies are invited too, with “Funburst” activities planned for them. It’s a
great opportunity for our Club to show off our club amenities—particularly our golf and dining. Thanks to Hagen Cleek and
staff for making this a sure success for all lucky enough to participate.
If you haven’t seen the new wine lockers in our Tavern on the Green, come by and check them out. There’s talk of adding more
if you’re interested.
If you’re planning a vacation this summer, have a great trip. If not leaving town, enjoy your “staycation” here and make some
lasting memories. Be sure to read the newsletter each month so you don’t miss out on great things planned.
Thanks for being a member and for making the Club at Sonterra greater than ever.
See you at the Club,
John

On the Course with David Gonzales
Golf Course Superintendent
The month of May has come to an end and
we are seeing drastic improvements
throughout both golf courses. We totaled 5.25” of rain
fall for the month of May, that’s 2” above the total
average rain fall for the month. This is very good going
into the month of June as the Agronomy team prepares
the golf course for the Sunburst event.
We had some nematode issues last month and have
taken the proper steps to alleviate this problem.
Although nematodes are inevitable and exciting things
will always be around, keeping them at a threshold that
turf can survive is very important.
There are many exciting things for this summer as our
team has begun mowing out the newly defined lines
around fairways and approaches. Really starting to dial
things in as turf conditions are getting much better.
Weeds are being treated, along with all insect pests
along the course.
Our next Agronomic scheduled dates are July 8th – 15th
for the South course. July 15th - 25th for the North
Course. As always, we want to thank you for being
patient with us as we continue to work at getting the
golf courses better every day.
“ see you on the golf course ”

Tennis News- Michelle Dodier, Director of Tennis Tennis Events/News
Let me begin by congratulating our Sonterra Member
Guest committee for another fantastic tournament. This
“team” of ladies sets the bar incredibly high each year
and exceeds it by a mile-everyone benefits from their
hard work in making this tournament second to none.
We begin planning in January and their main goal is making sure the
members and their guests have the best experience ever. We didn’t let the
weather on Friday dampen our spirits and couldn’t have asked for better
weather to follow. The tennis, as always, is some of the best you’ll see in
San Antonio. Sonterra is very unique in this event that has existed for 35
years. To have a two and a half day member guest is rare, but we pull it
off every year because it is so popular and wonderful. Some members
have requested we do this twice a year. Oh Boy!
Let me also congratulate our members because without your support this
tournament wouldn’t be as successful. Sonterra members have deep
pockets and generous hearts which enabled us to donate to our
tournament’s charity-- The Miss Tristan Foundation $10,000.00. We also
want to thank the Sonterra Food and Beverage department with the great
menu and all the housekeeping personnel that we kept busy. If you didn’t
get a chance to play this past year mark it down for next year, because
you know it will be here before you know it.
We have a busy summer schedule we are looking forward to and hope
that you can participate in as much of it as possible. Adult leagues begin
the week of June 3rd. We will be resurfacing six tennis courts so the
juggling act begins, but only for two to three weeks (barring no rain).
Wendy will continue having her Monday morning summer fun tennis --
along with the Tuesday morning, Wednesday evening and Thursday
morning clay court leagues. Mike and Scott run the men’s league and
yours truly runs the mixed league. So if you haven’t signed up and would
like to be on the sub list please call the tennis shop.
I can’t emphasize enough the advantages of having the Sonterra app on
your phone. If you need help connecting please check with the pro shop.
The notifications you receive from specific areas of the club are great
reminders and let you know the conditions of our tennis courts. Time
saver by all means.
Remember folks to keep enjoying your friends, your tennis, what Sonterra
has to offer and what tennis has added to our lives.

have been through this before and luckily we have a lot
of courts.

We will set up a court on Sunday and Monday morning

for their monetary support and help throughout this tournament.

you have of this event and what it means to your friends here at
Sonterra. THANK YOU!

our tournament, believe me they work tirelessly to make sure
everything is perfect.

SUMMER TIME CHECKLIST and REMINDERS
Court Reservations-- Please check in before going to your court. This is
our way of monitoring court availability for our other members' use. We
will assume the court is open after 10 minutes or you haven't called to
inform us of your delay. If you will not need your court please call and let
us know --we really do appreciate the phone call.
Guest Policy-- Guest are limited to one visit per month. House guests
must be registered through the membership department for longer club
privileges.
Towels-- The hotter it becomes the more towel usage and the more
disappearance of towels. Please help keep this problem to a minimum
this summer by dropping those towels in our towel bins situated through-
out the tennis area. We thank you in advance for complying with our
request.
Trash- The tennis facility looks beautiful and we know how proud our
members are of their club. Please help by disposing of your cups and
trash in the trash cans provided for you. FOOD IS NOT ALLOWED ON
THE COURTS.
Tennis Dress Code-- Men are required to wear shirts with sleeves. No
cut-offs, bathing suits, cargo shorts or workout tops are permitted. No
black-soled shoes of any type other than specifically manufactured for
tennis.
Ball Hoppers-- We have ball hoppers available for member use --
please return hoppers after use so other members may then use them.
SUMMER JUNIOR CAMP Brochures are available in the tennis shop for our summer
junior camp. If you would like us to email one to you—no
problem, just give us a call. The first session begins June 3rd
and will continue through August. Sessions are one week
long (Mon-Fri) and hours are 9am to noon. For more
information or to register your child please call the tennis
shop at 491-9888.
LADIES AND MENS BEGINNER CLINIC-
MON-WED 9AM TO 10:30AM Mike will have this clinic on Mondays and Wednesday
from 9am to 10:30am. For those that can attend both days
this will speed up the learning process and have you playing
before you know it. Let Mike introduce you to the ball
machine where you can practice what you just learned.
Working hand in hand with Mike and the “machine” will
take you to the next level. Call Mike for more confidence,
because this stage is the most important in developing good
strokes.
BALL MACHINE CLUB—WORK ON YOUR
GAME THIS SUMMER What is summer good for? Well I’m sure you can answer
that in many ways, but one for sure is time spent on the ball
machine. We are so happy to see so many members taking
advantage of our state of the art ball machine that does
everything but talk. You can design your own drills with
this machine to help you with those problem areas or to just
give you a good workout. The ball machine should go hand
in hand with your lessons. You need to reinforce what your
pro just taught you. They say it takes 10,000 balls to get a
shot down- what number are you on?

accomplishment to reach the finals of a very highly
competitive level of play and doing it as a freshman.
Though he lost in the finals he definitely left a major
impact on all the players he beat getting there. What a
