I mentioned two weeks ago that October is Respect Life month and so we pray throughout the month for a greater respect for all human life from conception to natural death. This respect for human life ties in nicely with another commemoration that we hold throughout October. This month is Domestic Violence Awareness month. It is during this time that we not only pray for those who suffer under this scourge, but also make ourselves more aware of just how pernicious a problem domestic violence is in our society. According to the Centers for Disease control, 25% of all women and 7.6% of all men have suffered physical abuse in a relationship at some point in their lives. If you think of all the family members and friends that surround those men and women, domestic violence has touched the lives of millions in our country. Throughout the month of October, you will see a purple prayer chain in our church that is made of the prayers of our community for an end to domestic violence and for the healing of all those who suffer because of it. Please keep these intentions in your prayer throughout the month of October. I am most grateful to our Domestic Violence Awareness Committee who are deeply devoted to addressing this issue in our parish and raising awareness for all of us.

Our readings this weekend give us pause for reflection. The parable of the wedding garment is a reminder of the necessity of keeping ourselves clothed in Christ. In baptism we are given a white garment that symbolizes our new creation in Christ. It is our wedding garment that we carry throughout our lives. In the baptismal ceremony we are told along with our parents that it is our duty to make sure that we bring that garment unstained into Heaven by living a life of good deeds in union with God’s grace, by having faith in God through Jesus Christ, and by asking for forgiveness when we sin. The man without a wedding garment was unprepared for the invitation. He had not made the time to repent and ask for God’s forgiveness. So many of us, myself included at times, think that there will always be more time. We say to ourselves, “I’ll have more time to pray when I’m older,” “I’ll start going to Mass more regularly when the kids grow up,” “I’ll make it to reconciliation in Lent or when I really sin.” The problem with all of these excuses is that they only work if we have the time. None of us knows when the invitation of the Lord will come to enter into his Kingdom, none of us knows the hour of our death. Pray now, go to Mass now, receive the sacrament of reconciliation now. Now is the time to turn our lives over to Christ.

As we near the end of Ordinary Time our readings remind us of the times to come and of God’s final judgment. We must prepare now to meet the Lord, we have to be ready each and every minute to join the feast. Christ has given us the wedding garment, if we stand before him without it or looking like a mess, it’s nobody’s fault but our own.

AT THE CORNER OF PEACE &

POPE FRANCIS TWEET The Rosary is a synthesis of the mysteries of Christ: we

contemplate them with Mary, who allows us to see with her

eyes of faith and love.

SOCIETY OF SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL SAINT PASCAL CONFERENCE

In this Sunday’s Gospel, it seems incredible that the invited guests could refuse to come to such a significant and lavish banquet! But we are invited to a feast even more lavish, and we too can fail to see its significance and fail to prepare ourselves. Our everyday living is not inconsequential—even the little

things we do are helping us put on our own wedding garments. Our continual conversions from sin prepare us for the feast of heaven.

The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving those in need. Saint Pascal Church is blessed to have a SVDP conference that is both supported by its parishioners and staffed by its parishioners. To learn more about what we do, please visit the Saint Pascal Church website, go to the menu bar, click Serve, and scroll down to SVDP, or contact the Parish office and they will connect you to a SVDP member.

WORD OF LIFE

“The credibility of a healthcare system is not measured solely by efficiency, but above all by the attention and love given to the person, whose life is always sacred and inviolable.”

— Pope Francis, “Address of Holy Father Francis to Participants in the Meeting Organized by the International Federation of Catholic Medical Associations,” September 20, 2013

Let us pray that our witness during this Respect Life Month move hearts to extend merciful protection for every person’s life.

Baby Bottle Project

Pick up a baby bottle, help a mother in need. The Women’s Center helps women who are facing difficult, unplanned pregnancies. The Respect Life Committee will be handing out baby bottles after Masses the weekend of October 14/15, to support their good work. Take a bottle, drop your change in it for a few weeks, and return it to the parish by November 5th. The money will help the Women’s

Center provide material support and counseling services for pregnant women, and assist them in accessing other community services.

On October 4, the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, pets were blessed at the North Campus by Deacon Greg and at the South Campus by Father Elliott, with the help of Father Greg. Students and parishioners brought pets of all sorts, including a WOLF

(how appropriate!) Students also learned more about St. Francis, his conversion of heart and the way God spoke to him, saying, “Francis, repair my church.” Students learned that St. Francis, the patron of our namesake, Pope Francis, cared not only for the people of God’s church, but for all of God’s creation, as depicted in his prayer we know as “The Canticle of the Sun.”

THE MEANING OF THE MASS “Why do we do the things we do at Mass? Why is it that we stand and sit and kneel at the various parts of the Mass? How is the Mass we celebrate today connected to

the Mass of the early Christians and most importantly to the Last Supper? What are the Jewish origins of the Mass? If you’ve ever asked yourself these questions or maybe other ones as well, please join me in a five part series on the Meaning of the Mass. On Tuesdays in October at 7:30 PM in Room 100, we will walk through the various parts of the Mass and talk about why we do the things we do. The remaining sessions will take place on October 17, 24, and 31. Please consider joining me for either some or all of these talks and learn a bit more about our Catholic faith.” … Father Elliott

ALL SOULS DAY MASS On Thursday, November 2nd at 7:00 PM, we will be celebrating All Souls Day with a special Mass in honor of our parishioners who passed

away between October 18, 2016 and October 15, 2017.

The names of all those who have passed away during this time will be read aloud and a candle will be lit for them at the same time. The Ministry of Consolation invites you to join us for this service of remembrance.

All those attending the Mass are invited to bring a favorite framed photograph (please no larger than 8x10) to be included in the memory display near the altar during the Mass. Please arrive a few minutes early for Mass so that we may include your photo within the display.

Immediately after the Mass all are invited for light refreshments in Heimsath Hall.

SMALL CHRISTIAN COMMUNITIES

The Small Christian Communities of Saint Pascal continue to meet and to share the presence of God in our lives through prayer and guidance about our Lord’s message for us. We are using the book, Acts: The Good News of the Holy Spirit by Kevin Perrotta (ISBN-13:978-0-8294-1448-6), and the New Testament Bible Section, Acts of the Apostles.

Week Three Focus: Who Are You, Lord? (Acts 8:1, 3; 9: 1-30)

In this section of the Acts of the Apostles, we learn of a Pharisee named Saul who spoke vehemently against the new Christian group. Saul actively sought house by house for Christian Jews. The Christians that Saul found in Jerusalem were threatened, persecuted and forced into prison. Saul then asked the high priest for permission to continue to arrest Christians in the cities beyond Jerusalem. It was on his way to Damascus that Saul encountered the Lord.

A heavenly flash blinded Saul and a voice said to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” Saul asked, “Who are you?” The reply was, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.” Jesus gave Saul directions to find Ananias, a disciple, and to stay with him for a few days. Ananias was frightened of Saul by his reputation, but the Lord instructed Ananias how to act. He welcomed Saul as brother and laid his hands on him so he would regain his sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit. Saul, soon to be called Paul, was baptized and began to preach and to proclaim in the synagogues that Jesus is the Son of God!

God chose Saul, one the most fiery persecutors against Him, to become Paul, one of the most fiery believers and preachers of the message of Jesus Christ. God has also chosen each of us to play a specific part in His plan for the world. Have you found out what your part is yet? How can you share with others something of the spiritual and material resources God has given you?

SACRAMENTAL CELEBRATIONS

We believe that the celebration of the sacraments ranks among the most important gifts that we have. We look forward to sharing these celebrations with men and women who, in some way, are part of our community. Therefore, please note the following:

INFANT BAPTISMS: Registration in the parish is a prerequisite. Parents are required to attend a Pre-Baptismal Preparation Session at least two months prior to the Baptism. Meetings are held on the first Monday evening of each month (except for holidays). Baptisms are generally held on the third Sunday of the month at 1:30 PM based on the liturgical calendar. (Baptisms do not take place during Lent.) Arrangements can be made at the Parish Office.

RECONCILIATION: Every Saturday at 9:00 AM

SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY: Saint Pascal requires either the bride, the groom, or the parent of either be registered and active as a parishioner for at least 6 months before contacting us to make any arrangements. Allow at least 6 months to complete wedding arrangements. Attendance at a music-planning workshop for the wedding Mass/ceremony is required. These are scheduled twice a year.

SACRAMENT OF THE SICK: Anytime a person is facing a serious illness, surgery or hospitalization, it is proper to receive the Sacrament of the Sick. Please contact a priest.

MINISTRY OF CARE - HOMEBOUND PARISHIONERS: Please call the Parish Office to arrange for Communion visitation.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION: Our Family Centered Catechesis Program is for families with children in grades K-8. Sessions meet once a month from September to May on either Monday evenings or Saturday mornings. In order for a child to receive the Sacraments, she/he must be enrolled in the program one year prior to the sacramental “prep” year.
